    COOL arrowhead bro, just a word of knowledge for ya; cheap stainless steels can't be hardened with that method. Different alloys have vastly differing hardening methods depending on their chemical makeup. The good old heat till orange/red and dunk in oil only works for simple high carbon steels. You add stuff like chromium and nickel (aka to make it stainless) and the chemistry changes. Theres a couple types of stainless that can be hardened like this (440 for example) but I doubt they make spoons out of it.

      Great info bro! Thanks for the education! Really looking forward to you KOR ep too

      @ Jake. Stupid question on my part... what could you hunt with this type of metal arrow? Or would it just shatter/bend on impact?

    • @nelsvantoor5159
      @nelsvantoor5159 2 роки тому +2

      @@bobbobbington3615 Bit late to the show and not Jake either, but I do happen to be an experienced metal/steelworker by profession.
      The answer to your question is pretty simple: Pretty much every small/medium-sized game as long as it doesn't hit hard bone.(the arrowhead would most likely bend as it isn't hardened at all...) It''l also most likely be a single-use arrowhead. As in: needs reworking after each use.

    • @ayyydriannn7185

      You can case harden mild steel! It’s a bit involved but I bet it would make basic metalware hold an edge, at least a little

    • @bh24x
      @bh24x Місяць тому

      @@ayyydriannn7185 do not attempt to add carbon to chromium infused stainless steel! Case hardening is really just leeching carbon into the steel. Chromium high carbon steel IS a thing but a much more recent invention which requires a LOT more advanced methods to get right than we have in our kitchens.
      Now that out of the way for those "Acktually people", when adding carbon to stainless steel, the chromium and the carbon react in such a way too each other as to ruin the quality of the steel.
      So case hardening stainless will result in a brittle mess in most cases.
      What I would suggest in the case of spoons is simple work hardening!
      Carefully beating the finished product with a hammer to add tension in the crystalline lattice of the steel will make the end result less prone to benting to a point acceptable for use with most longbows.
      I doubt I'll be seeing these homemade arrows shot through a modern compound bow anyways because of the first rule of compound bows being "Do NOT shoot wooden arrows". But these heads would also be among the do not shoot category of compounds.
      Even if you epoxied that tang admirably in a carbon shaft, the tang would be prone to warping in the shaft which would put uneven pressure on the wall and cause the arrow to explode.
      I've seen this happen even with machined inserts.

    Likely it's made from 18/8 stainless steel (most common for spoons beacuse of very high corrosion resistance), which doesn't really get hardened from quenching. The best way to harden it is actually cold working it. So you could save yourself the heating process altogether and just hammer away.
    It came out looking *chef's kiss* great work!

  • @AzraelThanatos
    @AzraelThanatos Рік тому +2

    You might want to remove a bit of the metal from the former handle part that's left, leaving a notch on both sides before the end...that's where it would normally be attached to the arrow for more traditional arrowheads.

    Just made myself one of these as a experiment, going to electro etch a pattern on to see how it looks. I have a vinyl cutting machine, so was able to make my head design out of temporary vinyl to get the shape i wanted on the spoon and then i can use it to ectch the pattern on before peeling it off. Just a idea if your not good at drawing or got steady hands with a dremmel. Plus it means you can make a batch of these and they will come out more uniform potentially..thanks for another awesome video pal. Love them.

    Now think about a battle like Agincourt - 5000 English archers each shooting 20 arrows per minute at armored French men-at-arms who outnumbered them at least 6-to-5.
    That's 100,000 arrows in the first minute of a long day of people trying to kill each other.

      Striking on a wooden surface would allow it to bend more due to the wood flexing below the strikes. The blemishes were, as he said, inflicted due to not striking with the hammer face parallel to the anvil. This is a skill that just comes with practice, and making a quiver-full of arrowheads is great practice.
