What are some franchises that got a second chance that you feel did it right? Or screwed it up?
The most obvious would certainly be metal gear solid. Mortal Kombat also got a helluva revival. Harder to think of the ones that didn't do so well as they fall into the memory gap of oblivion. Think that's what made this episode so interesting, seeing those that tried and failed. Wish they'd do another 2d Splatterhouse.
what about beat em and eat em on atari?
Cotton Reboot and Cotton Rock N Roll! Both really awesome games. Pocky and Rocky Reshrined is a another good one.
Deus Ex? The first one was a big hit, and the second one basically killed the studio. Then Human Revolution revived it, only to be killed by their sequel, Mankind Divided.
Solitaire ,Black Jack.... oh and poker...
(Yes I'm being a dick and theming from joes end skit)
I hope Phantasy Star (the main series, not the online one) gets revived. Also Shining Force.
Amen, especially if they deliberately made the art direction 90's retro in terms of style, to tickle the nostalgia nerve. The Shining series like a geological stratum shows the current anime trends.
Shining Force was almost made into a Gacha game, but Vespa, the Korean company that acquired the licence got into trouble and stopped development. It was all I ever wanted from a new Shining game, except for the 'only for smartphones' bit.
They got actually a nice remake on the PS2 but only for Japan market. 😔
Don't wanna be "that" guy, but the "main Phantasy Star" we have by now is the Online series. By the end of 2023, it's gonna be 30 years since the classic Phantasy Star series got its last game, so it's kinda hard to call it "main series" nowadays. Like it ot not, the Online series got popular as the original never did. I don't have any hopes of it being resurrected. I'd love to be wrong, though!
@@SEGARetroBR I hate to say it but without the OG Phantasy Star 1-4, there would be no PSO and PSU series.
But the original games outside of remakes are unlikely to come back. If you've beaten PSIV, you know what I mean.
@@damagedgears Yeah, the story was already concluded. Phantasy Star IV was meant to finish the classic series and I doubt SEGA thinks that remakes of those games would be profitable, which makes the classic series even less likely to come back. I mean, all they ever did was making low budget remakes of the first two on the PS2 and didn't even bring them to fans in the West.
A nice thing about that Splatterhouse reboot is that it has the first 3 Splatterhouse games as unlockable bonus games.
Also, one of the best examples of franchises that got a second chance is Killer Instinct.
That's the soul reason i bought the game. Its a shame the emulation was not that incredible. I bought a Namco collection on the Switch for a better version of SP1 and for 2 i had the cartridge but bought the Sega Genesis mini 2 ...... Never cared for the 3th
@@NipplesTheEnchilada2323Killer Instinct is the best "second chance" I've seen of a franchise. Both eras kick extreme ass!
I want this series to return again.
Thanks so much for making games sack still, I can't imagine the amount of work it takes to just make one episode. A guy doesn't have a lot these days and its nice to at least have these to watch when things suck so thx Game Sack.
"Splatterhouse from Namco hit the arcades in 1998." I don't know why but I love this error... Please don't change it...
Give likes until it reaches 98
I mean... I couldn't even if I wanted to. UA-cam doesn't allow you to replace the video with a patched version.
1998* Joe forgot to mention it was for the North Dakota market
@@GameSack 1998 was a good year. Happy for this change.
(should be 1988)
Awesome idea for an episode, Joe. I have no idea how you’re so consistent with high quality content. You’ve helped reignite my love for retro!
I was so impressed with the Blaster Master playing it in a "Family Computer" because of how detailed that tank was. When it jumped you can see the bouncing of the tires looking like the vehicles have shock absorbers. And jumping around it looked almost like you're doing tricks with your vehicle.
Doom 64 was always my favorite back in the day. I can't believe it took them so long to properly port it to the PC, and even newer consoles, but I'm glad more people are getting to see how good it is.
i liked the n64 darkness
we turned off the lights and complained
just like we were supposed to
Most people at the time thought it was just a port... plus it was a N64 exclusive release sandwiched between Goldeneye and Turok, and later obscured by John Romero's about to make us his beetch.
I remember when I got back into retro games about 15 years ago, Doom 64 was my favorite N64 for quite a while. I remember not really being into it when it was new, as Quake and Half-Life on PC had my attention. But the graphics and atmosphere on Doom 64 hold so much better than a lot of the other polygon based games.
Here's hoping the WipEout series gets another chance someday!
I really hope so. In my top 3 video game franchises. Might be my personal number 1
and F-Zero would please many, too.
Thank you for all you do Mr. Redifer
Gotta love being up at 2am for no reason..new Gamesack vid to the rescue!! 🤘🏻😈🎮
Inti Creates is a bit of an interesting company, starting from a group who left Capcom, but I guess it was on good enough grounds for them to continue to make the MegaMan Zero games before striking their own way with Azure Striker Gunvolt series, the Blaster Master games, and the retro games in the Bloodstained franchise... along with the *ahem* slightly pervy on-rails shooter "Gal Gun" games
I think they also worked on the Shantae games.
@@ghost085 Those are done by Way Forward. I think Inti Creates did some portrait art for dialog scenes for some of the games though... probably the 2 most recent ones, so they'd look consistent with Studio Trigger's cinematics, but I honestly don't know for sure.
Amusingly, for Mega Man 9 i believe it IS common to do Galaxy Man first. I do because his weapon is best against Jewel Man, and with Jewel Man's weapon you can idle to grind for bolts and 1-Ups
A thing I find interesting is that, while the stages can be a bit frustrating at times, the bosses themselves aren't that bad. Honestly you could take on any boss first, and probably be fine. I actually usually go for Concrete Man first myself. Mostly because that's the stage from the demo so I got used to it.
Have to be that guy, but doom 2016 has the chainsaw finisher. You get it maybe 1/4 of the way thru the game. I do agree that its pretty awesome
Yeah I didn't play much of Doom 2016 before I got hooked on Eternal and never looked back.
I swear the minute it hits midnight and I should go to bed, you post a video.
I think at this point my wife has fallen asleep more to your voice than anything
How romantic
Saturn version of Sega Rally was great, the arcade handling on the pad was so addictive, many happy memories shaving lap times on that version.
Me and my brother used to challenge each other to beat each other's lap times. It got to the point where one mistake would mean hitting retry as we shaved our times to the limit.
Yes! I spent lifetimes in that game. A lot of people who spend little time with racing games may not understand sometimes they're purely rhythm games deep down.
went to skip the intro out of habit, remembered this was Game Sack, and rewound to the beginning. love that youre still doing these videos joe! theyre still some of the best
Gamesack is the only channel I will go through the effort of going back to a video I watched while cleaning just so I can click the Like button. Great stuff.
This is exactly what I do too! 🫂👍❤
Thanks! A new episode every Sunday for a whole month? Toast to the summer of Sack! 🍻
Thank you!! :)
Another Game Sack masterpiece. A Game Sacksterpiece
You're trying too hard again.
That would be Sackreligious to think otherwise
I was 😂 at sacksterpiece,
But I was 🤣 at sackrilegious.
I'm 😎 now that these words are in my auto suggest.
the best gaming channel
I like my puns intended
The voice actor for the splatterhouse remake is incredible. He also voiced Winnie the Pooh hahaha.
That's Jim Cummings for you.
The PSP version of Sega Rally Revo has the best physics of the 3. It's a lot smoother and there is that ad-hoc system link multiplayer too. I think the Excitebike game series would be one for the next video in this series. I really liked Excitebike World Rally on the Wii. Awesome video! Thanks Joe!
Sweet. Got my Saturday night Sack.
Capcom kind of made a classic Mega Man for modern systems before Mega Man 11. Everyone always forgets about Mega Man Powered Up for the PSP, which was an enhanced remake of Mega Man 1. It added two more Robot Masters, more stages, playable Robot Masters, playable Roll, playable Protoman, a level editor, challenge mode, widescreen, and other features. It's tragic failure (beyond the graphics that some hated) was that it was only released on the PSP.
Powered Up flopped because people hate cute stuff
Nice that this episode came out the same weekend Fatal Fury got out of its grave after 23 years
I think you meant to say that Splatterhouse came out in 88, not 98. No bigs, it happens, as Forrest Gump would say.
Okay... Just making sure someone caught that.
splatterhouse released in 1868
Closer to 1888
The first Splatterhouse was released in the year of our lord 1388. Same year it was set in.
12:13 you guessed it wrong. Galaxy Man IS the best to tackle first. Otherwise great video as usual.
😂 yeah he's not that good in Megaman
@@VictorFreitasRocha10 And yet, he liked 9 the most, which is by far the hardest of them.
@@SEGARetroBR Mega Man & Bass is the toughest classic Mega Man title out there. Especially the GBA version with the cropped display. Yikes.
@@niemand7811 I meant the hardest among the ones he mentioned (9, 10 and 11).
GalaxyMan actually is recommended as the first boss to beat. And now Megaman is on hiatus again, as all we're getting is compilations
If they make that movie that they’re supposed to make, there will definitely be a new game.
Watching the sack while I hit the sack with my sac.
Killer Instinct was apparently dead but was revived in 2013, and it is supposed to get a 10 year anniversary update this fall, I read.
Big Joe never ceases to impress. Best channel for video game information.
That's what she said
Great episode!
I would mention also Bionic Commando and Strider, both from Capcom.
Wow, this is crazy. I've waited years to get Splatterhouse 7th gen version. It just got to my house today from eBay and that's the 1st game in your vid - what a coinkiedink.
There used to be a guy named Dave on this show. Where’s Dave?
He left awhile back for family reasons I think? He still appears on new episodes sometimes. He was on a few months back.
@@VenomSnakeMGSi think he said he had to focus more on his job too
I love the look of SamSho 2019. I must pick that up actually.
18:12 Blaster Master Zero was released on the 3DS as well
UA-cam just asked me to rate my viewing of this episode.
5 stars. Life-changing.
A few other franchises to include would be Pocky and Rocky, No More Heroes, and then Armored Core once the new one comes out. Oh, and the Crusin games.
Splatterhouse(2010) could also be in a video about franchise killer
Alright, turbonerd time! You made mention of the fact that OG doom was originally meant to be played with just a keyboard at 4:40 and while it does work excellently with just a keyboard, this statement is an old myth. There are several things to support this:
1: The developers all played with mouse input during development and the demos playing in the menu are all recorded using mouse input.
2: Back in the DOS days, the menu asked you for an input preference and the manual actually encouraged you to switch to mouselook when you felt comfortable enough with the game.
3: John Romero himself went on record saying that Doom and Wolfenstein 3d (surprisingly enough) was made with mouse input in mind from the ground up.
I think this is one of those old wives tales its time we put to rest. Unless, you just said that in order to bait old codgers like me into commenting in which case... You got me, check mate. Great video as usual Joe!
The Sack is Back!
doom's music is some of the best
Happy Sunday! What a cool idea for an episode. I loved that last splatter house game when it came out!
:( I wish you released a video more than one a week, this probably my fav youtube channel, I cant sub though last time I did it just shows me 30+ reruns on my front page. I will always check and come back weekly for your content Joe. And yes, I watch every single damn skit at the end lol
Another Sunday, another Game Shack. We love you John. ❤
John Gamesack is my favorite protag
Joe with that beard looks like a budget version of Chuck Norris! He's got 1 million MEGAAAAA POWEEEEER!
The blaster master stuff was cool, I didn't know they made new ones so recently
it was big on the eshop during the early years on switch, even has some dlc characters from other franchises i think
@@jonniefastCertainly on 1, but my memory's fuzzy with 2's DLC.
Great video as always! I could listen to you talk about video games all day so any excuse to make a new video is always welcome!
"Very long easy right, maybe". Is it a very long easy right, or not?
To be determined...
@11:27 Mega Man 9 and 10 are both impossible on the original NES hardware. Some of the obstacles were stated to be impossible to impliment on NES hardware. I haven't played the game in over a decade myself so I can't give specifics, but I'm sure someone else can if need-be. I'm sure there's write-ups about it as well.
Love this episode. And honestly Joe I think it would be awesome of you reviewed some modern games. Some indie as well as triple a . It would be refreshing to hear your perspective on them
💯 I love when he talks modern games
That stack of HuCards, like Joe's editing skill, is quite impressive.
Wait is Joe? Remy LeBeau?
Hmm 🤔
hu cards? i have one around here somewhere 😂
STRIKE Series deserve this comeback 🥲🥲🥲
I think that would be a hard series to remake. I owned and loved Desert and Jungle Strike but I think that style of game would just be perceived as a cheap mobile style game now. I'm giving you an upvote for the sentiment though. It was an amazing trio of games on the 16 bit consoles and I heard Soviet and Nuclear Strike existed too.
i love you gamesack john your content feels like early youtube
Thanks!
-John
I feel like Joe revels in the knowledge that collectors will wince at the way he handles his HuCards in that skit.
Doom 2016 is far better and the way to get around the Bethesda thing for me was I turned wifi off on my PS4. Then booted the game and had no trouble,. Turned Wi Fi back on and it never asked me again on Eternal.
The chainsaw in Doom 2016 also gave ammunition when used against enemies, but to be honest I've never actually played the game, that's just what I've heard from old reviews.
I think they went back to the NES style on Mega Man 9 because sales went down with each game in the series after that, and they were trying to get back to basics. Interviewers asked the devs why they didn't make it into a NES game, and they said that at the time it was too big of a game to fit the NES limitations, and too much of an undertaking. Maybe they could do it now? The graphics filter has been removed on the Mega Man Legacy Collection 2.
I've played Doom 2016, and you're right. Chainsaw kills give you ammo. I haven't played Eternal yet, but I imagine it works the same way.
Doom 2016 is incredible.
@@truehareAt least with Eternal, if you're out of gas, it regenerates.
I am so far behind the times, I just bought Doom 2016 (for Xbox One) a few weeks ago.... for 50p (that's about 65 cents right?). And also...i only just bought my first Xbox One this year! It's so satsifying when you wait and get things dirt cheap!
Air Zonk OST is such a bop
"Struggles to keep 30 fps, but that was the landscape back there".
Me, playing Zelda TOTK: suprised Pikachu face.
You actually picked a good first boss for MM9. I usually start with him or Splash Woman.
Joe's proclamation of a game being awesome never sounded as jubilant as his reaction of the revived Doom eternal. Banger episode gamesack.
Watching you shuffle the HUcards, makes me feel uneasy. Those puppies are precious, dude.
He knows how ro handle his own games
Oh, no way. You don't say.
Just when I thought I've seen every Game Sack episode, I'm hit with more...
WinCE was named properly, because that's what you do when you see it. I couldn't confirm this since I didn't import it for myself, but I heard the Japanese version did NOT use WinCE, so it ran much better, consistent 60fps.
I feel like I might be a rare fan of Sega Rally Revo (or just 'Sega Rally' as it was called here in the UK). I bought it for £3 on the PS3 back in 2019 and didn't see another human being for about a month. Maybe I was just glad to be playing the series again, having missed every version since the Saturn.
Don't worry, I like it too. I have it for PS3 and PSP.
ive been out of the loop for so long, i had no idea there were 4 modern master blaster games, they look awesme
R Type got revived with R Type Final 2 and it's awesome
"Read 'em and weep" as Joe lays out his arbitrarily-assigned hand got me pretty good.
The stage select screen from Mega Man 2 is such a banger
the end skit where Joe shuffles thousands of dollars in his hands triggered me in ways I cannot explain.
To be honest, I think it should trigger just about any reasonable human being.
Thanks Game Sack Joe I Have A New Appreciation For Sundays
The HuCard gag at the end was great!
There is a way to get pass the force login issue with Doom Eternal. If you disconnect the internet from the console or PC, you can get pass it.
Maybe your best end sketch yet. Keep up the good work!
Megaman is a great video game series that should continue to delight us with its parts.
That was a fun video! I'm so sorry Joe that you didn't come across the chainsaw in DOOM (2016)... it spilled ammo as well. Also worth mentioning how that soundtrack in both games pairs with demon slaying so well! Even without Reznor.
I loved Spatterhouse 2010, I know it was glitchy but still fun and the soundtrack opened me up to new metal bands
Please dont stop making awesome content.
What turned me off with Doom Eternal is that it felt like I had less freedom to play the way I wanted to play. The tougher enemies have specific weaknesses and it felt like a chore. I do want to give it another chance.
Same here. And the feel of the game I think isn't quite as satisfying as the doom reboot
The story and humor as well. The entire thing was so disappointing for someone who loves 2016.
Phantasy Star!
Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis (Ver 2) would be great for Franchise Killers Vol. 4!
Smooth as silk. Still the best show on all of UA-cam.
Mentioning the greatness of Megaman 2 and taking this particuliar satge and moment to stay silent and let us listen gave me PTSD about some laser beams that i now hear again; i even recall the patern, and you'r such a madlad sir. Thx and keep that shit up.
I knew my spidey-sense was tingling. It's sunday morning but something was missing. Joe's big fat sack, that's what!
i must say one of my favorite skits there at the end 😂
The after credits scene is fantastic.
Anyone else just impressed that Joe had that MANY turbo grafx and duo cards!? That’s crazy 😂
Definitely learned a lot and continue to do so with this channel 😊
Its funny that you released this just as SNK revealed Fatal Fury: City of the wolves, 24 years after the last game
That blaster master chip tune sounds practically identical to the closing song to the very obscure very bizzare classic horror flick, Sleepaway Camp lolol. I think the song is called Angela's Theme and is a total bop of a song. Highly recommend for the 80s music lovers.
Watch this movie if you haven't too, just don't spoil it for yourself. Go in blind.
Chainsaw ammo thing is also in Doom 2016
Metroid: Samus Returns and Metroid Dread should definitely be covered in "Franchises That Got A Second Chance 2"
Metroid would be a pretty cool series to cover. The Metroid Prime subseries was also really good.
Yup, you nailed it! The modern Splatterhouse game is a perfect example of why sound design is SO important for beat em up style games!
Streets of Rage 2 comes to mind when it comes to fantastic sound design! Each blow is so satisfying when it's accompanied by a loud smash each & every time!
How cool would a new Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road be if they kept the original vantage point? Pretty it up some, add some customization features and maybe more drivers on the road and you have an instant party game
Sonic Mania, Streets of Rage 4, Shredders Revenge, Battletoads, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, Homeworld, Baldur's Gate, Shadowrun, and the upcoming Mario Bros. Wonder seem like obvious franchises for future episodes.
I personally love the original SoR series and the newer 4.
Fun fact for the Dreamcast version of Sega Rally 2: The unlocked framerate helps the game when emulating it. On the DC it almost never made the 60fps, but on a reasonably powerful PC it suddenly runs at mostly 60fps. So that's currently the best version to play due to the extra tracks compared to the arcade version. The PC version is also good but it's a bit harder to run on modern PCs and also lacks good controller support.
Blaster Master was incredible when it came out, fond memories indeed!
My favorite part of these videos is where that guy talks about video games.
Hands down, my favorite channel. Great job! 👍
Joe and Mac would be another good one for a future episode with its latest entry.
Doom 2016 also had the chainsaw generating ammo. If you finished that game without it then Good Lord you dangerous xD
