Klonoa's one of those mascot platformer games that you wish got the same love as Mario or Sonic. It's charm is basic but unique and easy to give to friends and family as an introductory to video games. Both games are remastered for modern platforms, including a Steam port.

Itagaki preferred the Saturn version of DoA because it played better and because it's based on the original arcade version. That's also why he had it ported to Xbox since it was his personal favorite.
30:47 The Japanese version of the game has a student sim game on the second disc. Since that game was deleted from the second disc due to Capcom USA not translating it, the second disc does feel excessive in the American version. However, the platform fee for the second disc was probably cheaper than asking Capcom Japan to re-do the first disc to include the Evolution Disc content minus the student sim. This is no different from Resident Evil 2 when optimizing the game to fit on one disc would cost more than just paying for a second disc.
Great video! I love this nostalgic feeling I get with this channel’s episodes. The style, the themes, music, the jokes.. it all takes me back to that feeling in the 90s of going to the TV in the evening to catch that videogames show while you grab a snack. Really wholesome stuff. Thanks!
Little fun fact about Motorhead ps1, on the PAL version you get 3 opponents in the smooth mode instead of 2 because it's 50fps, guess the spare overhead helped here haha.
The higher resolution of PAL is outweighed by the longer vblank interval sometimes. The GPU works a bit harder per-frame but the CPU gets more time to think. PAL really was the superior standard, but so much stuff was designed for NTSC that its single shortcoming became infamous.
Generally European developers optimized correctly their games for PAL releases. They often made their games full screen and play at the correct speed, sometimes they even used the extra time left to the CPU to do other things. Seriously people often criticize PAL releases for nothing, yes 60hz is better than 50Hz, but 576i/288p is also better than 480i/240p and English isn't everyone's first language (+ games often released later so sometimes we had some game fixes). The funny part is the games that weren't optimized in their speed but were for their resolution are the superior version today in emulators if you force 60hz as long as the game don't need sound synchronization. We need PAL semi-optimized patches to play every games at 288p 60hz
36:08 I always love seeing how much the graphics improved over a consoles lifetime. It's especially noticeable with fighting games like Tekken and Soul Calibur.
PS1 can be kind of weird when trying to nail down the actual frame rate since it's able to selectively update certain things at different rates. The mainline Final Fantasies are a popular example since the battle menus themselves update at 60fps even though the battles certainly don't. But speaking of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy VII has the Speed Square mini-game that runs at 60, as well as the snowboard mini-game.
Couldn't get to sleep, decided to check the home page again, and got to watch a fresh Gamesack minutes after it was released. I was not red E for how good tonight would turn out.
Nice job putting this one together, Joe! It must have been a real pain in the ass figuring out what all of the 60fps games were and getting all this footage of each game. It's incredibly easy to just take things for granted without really stopping and thinking about all the hard work that goes into stuff like this, so I just want to let you know that I do very much appreciate it. Been watching you for years, since back in the Dave era of the show. I always love to see Dave come back for a show on rare occasion too. He's become very nostalgic, and he's super funny. I'll never forget that hilarious skit where he gets stalked by that Sonic plushie. It's an all time classic. I'd love to see you do a sequel skit one day where Sonic returns to stalk Dave yet again after all these years, and maybe this time he actually stalks both of you. You know, there is this idea most people have that Sony "hated" 2D games and didn't want any of them on the PS1. I'm pretty sure that's an exaggeration and not entirely accurate. Nobody really wanted 2D games at the time, not just Sony. It's not because they were hated, but rather because they wanted games that showed off the power of their hardware. 3D was the next big thing. If they truly hated 2D so much, they wouldn't have allowed any to be released on their console. There are many 2D games on the PS1, and so much more then most people even realize.
And more than 20 years later, using a high-end computer that costs over a grand, I get around 20 FPS on most AAA released ports on Steam. Can't wait to play Jedi Survivor!
I was always surprised by how many PS2 and GameCube games prioritized framerate, especially considering how 5th gen (and later 7th gen) consoles had such abysmal performance so often, especially N64. I always prefer a high and stable framerate over graphical fidelity, and I’m glad a lot of modern console games give us that performance option.
Usually any game that “prioritized frame rate” was built for a lower quality machine and so the frame rate buff was just a happy coincidence. Unless we’re talking about something like F-Zero where it was to help make it appear fast. The ps2, Xbox, GameCube era was the first generation where we really started to see the same game be made for multiple consoles at the same time without basically building separate versions from scratch.
Sadly n64 was a victim of being too complicated for it's own good. Kaze Emanuar has been optimizing Mario 64's source code to run a way more advanced version at above 30. His work has shown the original Mario 64 could have been 60 fps if they had the knowledge and time back then
@@kimjrYTyeah. We also have to remember that they were probably programming Mario 64 before the final hardware specs for the N64 were even locked down.
@@JazGalaxyIt was also generally the case for exclusives. Not all of them mind you, but if a game ran at 60 it was probably helped by only having to be on one system! A lot of games designed or initially designed with the PS2 in mind ran at 60 for example: Ace Combat, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, Metal Gear Solid 2, Devil May Cry, Armored Core, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Gran Turismo, Twisted Metal Black, Zone of the Enders, etc. These were fairly advanced games too with open environments and/or a lot of effects. Some of them pushed the hardware more than some of the 30fps games did.
Playing these 60 fps games with the duckstation emulator and activating the perspective correction option it's absolutely fantastic, not only 60fps also the solid textures you can get, it's a game changer in my opinion. Thank you Joe for another fantastic episode.
Been messing around with Duckstation (as well as XBSX2, Dolphin, Flycast, etc etc) on my Xbox Series X in dev mode. It's crazy how good some of these games look running at 4k and 60fps.

With I.Q., you are aware that when you destroy a green cube, it leaves a green mark on the ground that you can then detonate at will to destroy the 3x3 grid of cubes around it, right? Because that's kind of a big part of what makes I.Q. so exciting! You can't really complete later levels without placing and using those green "landmine" cubes very carefully! I.Q. also has a unique ending for every playable character, which is kind of rad. It's really a very exciting and fast-paced puzzle game once you get the hang of it! (Also, there's a Japan-only sequel to I.Q. on the PlayStation 1 called I.Q. Final, which I believe also runs at 60 fps! It's an improvement over the original game in basically every way, and is the best I.Q. title IMHO, even surpassing the PS2 sequel known as I.Q. Remix+. Recommended to check out sometime!)
Great video! Found some titles I'd like to check out that I missed out on back then. Just wanted to note that Vs. did come out in the States and it was a kind of predecessor to Slap Happy Rhythm Busters. Both were made by Polygon Magic. They also released another PS1 fighter, Lord Of Fist/Shaolin, but I can't remember if the fights ran at 60 FPS in that game.
Devil Dice is basically a PS1 precursor for Bombastic on the PS2. Also yes these games are HARD!!! Would you also believe there's actually a multiplayer mode in Bombastic?
As a console-only gamer Tobal No 1 is probably the first time I really noticed 60fps and high resolution mode, then I got a Saturn late in Saturn's life and noticed the same things in VF2 to an even greater degree of amazing visuals. Prior to that I think I just kind of thought all games on a system were similar resolution and similar frame rate or didn't even know what frame rate was.
For emulator users.. for most games that have a 60 FPS target but can't always sustain it, if you use Duckstation and overclock the CPU, you can have a perfect 60 FPS at all times. For example, this is how I play Loaded, and it's transformative, seriously. This doesn't work on games with endlessly uncapped frame rates as many of them then seem to play at the wrong speed. I tried fine tuning and gave up with those games.. but for those specifically with a 60 FPS cap, this trick is marvellous.
41:37 Correction VS actually only came out in North America and Europe but was basically a reskin of Fighter's Impact from 8:55 which DID only come out in Japan
Once again I love to see Zero Divide 2 appear on these lists, though it's a bit of a wait to get to it since the list is sorted alphabetically. Such an underrated gem. Maybe not the most original thing in the world, but it feels very smooth to play and the soundtrack is absolutely killer. Do check this one out if you haven't and if you like Virtua Fighter-style fighting games!
Joe did you ever try playing the tutorial in IQ? The green cubes give you the ability to capture more cubes and you're supposed to not capture the black cubes.
A daunting task with rewarding results! Thanks again for narrowing the search for ps1 games in that category. This was needed for those enthusiast collectors.
Laudable that someone not only made a PS1 60fps games list in video, but actually also commented what's about each game and possible quirks and hoops you need to jump through to get 60fps! If I had to do it, it would have to be done this way... I'm just lacking in time and interest, but it's certainly a nice and useful video to have around when exploring PS1's game library
Lots of games on the PS1 that are nowhere near 60fps can do so with some overclocking on an emulator. Before Nightdive Studio's PowerSlave Exhumed remaster on current systems, the PS1 version overclocked was the premier way to enjoy the game. Maybe a topic for a Sack video? Even if it involves icky emulators.
Yeah, just throw more power at it bro. That would be like saying the 3DS Pokémon games have no frame rate problems because you can forcibly enable multithreading and high clock rate modes on the N3DS via Luma.
Yes and no. When a game is named a western name like Darius (written in katakana), the Japanese pronunciation isn’t necessarily “correct” since they are acknowledging that it’s not a Japanese word. For instance, if they named a game “Emily” and wrote it “e-me-ri”, an American would call it “E-me-ri” they would just call it “Emily”.
it looks way better in person. in my opinion it's one of the best fighters on the playstation. it's highly replay able due to the number of fighters to unlock not to mention the combos you can pull off.
60fps, High Res mode, full 3d, 2 player - Rapid Racer/Turbo Prop Racing. This is one of the most technologically impressive PS1 games and it's a shame you didn't know about this. Check it out and you'll certainly be impressed. You forgot a number of others too. It's just that I recall this game as an impressive PS1 game for its time.
It’s pretty impressive how the developers were able to get everything looking and running good later on in the PS1’s life. Example being Bloody Roar and then Bloody Roar 2 which were only a couple years apart.
32:16 I was confused as I remembered looking up the second game years ago and seeing that the sequel was only on Dreamcast Apparently Shiritsu Justice Gakuen Nekketsu Seishun Nikki 2 is basically what Street Fighter III: Third Strike is to Street Fighter III: Second Impact, it's like an update It adds two characters and a new version of the school mode c:
Additional to the wrestling game AJPW: King's souls (at 42:30), which IMO is by far the best wrestling game on the system (as well as the two King of Colosseum Games based on the same game engine on the PS2), there's also Yuke's NJPW: Toukon Retsuden 3 with an optional 60 fps mode. But using that mode the Referee is missing. Toukon Retsuden 2 also had such mode, but I guess it doesn't count since it was only available via a cheatcode. Also a heavily modified Toukon Retsuden 3 game engine (upgraded in terms of graphic fidelity, downgraded in terms of gameplay and realism) was the basis for the PS1 WWE Smackdown games (as well as the prior to Smackdown released budget games "Simple 1500 Series Vol. 22: The Pro Wrestling" and "Simple 1500 Series Vol. 52: The Pro Wrestling 2").
Great content as always! Next you should do a video covering games that ran in high resolution mode for PS1, PS2 & Dreamcast! Not sure how much interest it would draw, but I sure would be interested! 😁
I currently use Bloody Roar 2 as my benchmark for testing PS1 emulation. Not only is it a 60fps game with a lot of graphical effects, but the fact that it has a CPU vs CPU mode means it's easy for me to just watch the screen without thinking too much.
Devil Dice has been a favorite of mine and my friends for years. There is a great Puzzle mode with a ton of levels, an Endless mode, and the fantastic multiplayer mode with up to FIVE players. Don't miss out!
I love that these are in alphabetical order. Makes searching for individual titles easy to find. Plus, just being in order is just a nice touch for our chaotic world.
“Never heard” of n²o: Nitrous Oxide?! It’s one of the very few PlayStation games I bothered to own since it was at the top of more than one “best graphics” list. It also had the entire “Vegas” album from The Crystal Method which automatically gives it a killer soundtrack! So, yeah, not just “licensed music” but an entire album with the shrink wrap even had a sticker on it with something like “Featuring TCM: Vegas” with a silhouette of the duo and their stylized text. Wish I hadn’t lost it in a tornado.
This is a neat topic for a Game Sack episode. Can you do a video covering 60 FPS games on Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn consoles + 30 FPS PlayStation One games as well please?

I was so frustrated when he called this game boring while seeing all these green triangles floating in the air, gosh
IQ Final was also released as "Kurushi Final" in Europe.
Kurushi rocked..
I forgot at how many fighting games were released back in the 90s.
Rascal is a weird game. The fact that the Executives thought that tank controls in a platformer was a good idea will forever baffle me.
They think "TOmb Raider popular. Make it more like Tomb Raider." And that's all they think.
We really have Mario 64 to thank for laying the groundwork
Funnily enough, Croc also does this but it's fairly manageable.
Tonic Trouble and Rayman 2 very nearly got the same treatment. Especially the former, as a slower-paced adventure game.
@@The_Boctor wonder if Spyro might have gone the same route if Mario 64 never happened
Would you also believe there's actually a multiplayer mode in Bombastic?
the puzzle mode of the first one was excellent
@@fu102 Agreed
As a console-only gamer Tobal No 1 is probably the first time I really noticed 60fps and high resolution mode, then I got a Saturn late in Saturn's life and noticed the same things in VF2 to an even greater degree of amazing visuals. Prior to that I think I just kind of thought all games on a system were similar resolution and similar frame rate or didn't even know what frame rate was.
Excellent episode! One minor correction: Vs. on PS1 wasn't exclusive to Japan as it was released in the US.
I love when I’m up late and I see a new Game Sack episode drop. It’s time to get cozy 📺😏🕹️
Didn't realize there were so many 60fps games for the PS...
Loved this episode.
Off the top of my head it was mostly fighting and a handful of racers like that special version of Ridge Racer which was also hi-res
That explains why DDR 5th Mix was always my favorite, best selection of music and it felt so much better to play than the previous games.
I always look forward to the new game sack episode.
I had Roll Away (Kula Quest) for PS1. I never thought it was rare.
Joe did you ever try playing the tutorial in IQ? The green cubes give you the ability to capture more cubes and you're supposed to not capture the black cubes.
I'm good with never playing it again, thanks :)
Super underappreciated game, its always been a stand out title on the console to me lol.
I remember being obsessed with N2O. Such a gem on the PS1
"Killing isn't a crime if it's crime you're killing"
I'll have to meditate on that one latter
A daunting task with rewarding results!
Thanks again for narrowing the search for ps1 games in that category.
This was needed for those enthusiast collectors.
Dead or alive has 60 fps jiggles no wonder they look so nice
Kula Quest did release in the U.S, the name unsuprisingly was changed to Roll Away.
60 fps, one of my early obsessions with 3D. This was great!
I appreciate you growing such a lush hair for end bit.
The double pronunciation bit with Darius is extra funny when neither are correct. Good stuff 😂
Maybe it's just me but Joe feels like he could easily be a good friend to most of us. He's very comfy & personable.
That 60fps Battle Arena 3 looked... like it was in a weird slow motion.
when a game goes from 30 to 60, it usually looks faster not slower.
it looks way better in person. in my opinion it's one of the best fighters on the playstation. it's highly replay able due to the number of fighters to unlock not to mention the combos you can pull off.
@@foreverhungry84 I dabble with playing it on my shitty PS one classic I got for $35.
How did you research this? is there a database? or did you painstakingly load up every 3D PS1 game and analyse the frames?
It’s pretty impressive how the developers were able to get everything looking and running good later on in the PS1’s life. Example being Bloody Roar and then Bloody Roar 2 which were only a couple years apart.
32:16 I was confused as I remembered looking up the second game years ago and seeing that the sequel was only on Dreamcast
Apparently Shiritsu Justice Gakuen Nekketsu Seishun Nikki 2 is basically what Street Fighter III: Third Strike is to Street Fighter III: Second Impact, it's like an update
It adds two characters and a new version of the school mode c:
Your videos are the best museum/archive for games on the internet. I've been a fan for a long time
Additional to the wrestling game AJPW: King's souls (at 42:30), which IMO is by far the best wrestling game on the system (as well as the two King of Colosseum Games based on the same game engine on the PS2), there's also Yuke's NJPW: Toukon Retsuden 3 with an optional 60 fps mode.
Internal Section absolutely needs that remaster. For something to fill that itch though, Polybius does a pretty good job.
Great content as always! Next you should do a video covering games that ran in high resolution mode for PS1, PS2 & Dreamcast!
Not sure how much interest it would draw, but I sure would be interested! 😁
Most Dreamcast games ran in its highest resolution though.
@@bombjack1984 Many ran at 240p while some ran at 480 or could be forced to run at 480, at least that's my understanding.
@@bombjack1984 That will be 640x480 for ntsc games. Does the Dreamcast support PAL resolutions like 640x576 or 640x512?
I currently use Bloody Roar 2 as my benchmark for testing PS1 emulation. Not only is it a 60fps game with a lot of graphical effects, but the fact that it has a CPU vs CPU mode means it's easy for me to just watch the screen without thinking too much.
We need new Bloody Roar and Rival Schools Games!!! 😢
Devil Dice has been a favorite of mine and my friends for years. There is a great Puzzle mode with a ton of levels, an Endless mode, and the fantastic multiplayer mode with up to FIVE players. Don't miss out!
I can't resist the urge to be pedantic.
K-1 is just kickboxing, its just the name of the promotion like "UFC" or "Golden Boy".
Just rented Raycrisis from my local video store today. Great recommendation!
41:45, Vs. was a worldwide release, and came out in all major regions. I own all 3 regions of this game.
It was a Western localization with redesigned characters.
Joe with the FRESH cut. Looking good my man
I didn't realize that Bloody Roar 1 and 2 ran at 60fps. I enjoyed the gameplay instead of the framerate.
The framerate helped you enjoy the gameplay even if you didn't specifically notice it.
Kula World/KulaQuest is called Roll Away in the United States. So you can have 60fps and read the menus too.
This is a neat topic for a Game Sack episode. Can you do a video covering 60 FPS games on Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn consoles + 30 FPS PlayStation One games as well please?
Right here, my guy - ua-cam.com/video/yypKSSQky8w/v-deo.html
I'm not sure but I feel like 30 FPS PS1 games would be 1000+
@@GameSack Oh, I didn’t see that was uploaded 2 months ago.
