Presence is a straight ahead hard rock album and very stripped back for a Led Zep record, except for the many LAYERS of guitars. Nothing too fancy, little if any keyboards. I'm surprised it doesn't rate higher w/ Zep fans.
In my opinion it's the weak second side that lets it down. I've never been a fan of Nobody's Fault But Mine, and Candy Store Rock and Hots On From Nowhere are annoying and weak. Tea For One almost saves it. A stunning slow blues with great singing and guitar work.
A very musically and technically sophisticated album. Zep's skills and abilities were expanding. Each song is unique and experimental in some way, either with guitars on multi-layered octaves, vibrato chords slowed to a stand still and then uncoiled, chopped bar chords, on and on it goes. If you understand what Zep is doing behind all that great singing and playing, it staggers the mind. Genius
This is my fave Zep album. Super raw. No keyboards, mandolins, a little acoustic guitar on one track. Just an amazing rock band. Jimmy had worked on the guitar layers with a multi-track at home. I love the textures he created. And yeah the grooves they lock into are some of their best. And that insane cover art! It's like they weren't trying to be Zep, they just wanted to have some fun. Inspired all around.
The main riff in the first song, _Achilles' Last Stand,_ always makes me think of horses running on a beach, and when the cymbals crash it's like they're splashing through puddles.

I love your genuine reaction. There is something about listening to Zeppelin for the first time. It brings back memories and justifies how great they were/are. The passion of their commitment to the experience of playing as a band... for the MUSIC... transcends decades.

This Album is a brilliant masterpiece the drumming of John Bonham the bass of John Paul Jones the incredible voice of Robert Plant and the amazing guitar of Jimmy Page they compliment each other such pure magic ❤❤❤
Guitar overdub heaven! I never quite figured out how many overdubs Jimmy added in Achilles Last Stand, but it's a lot. And he's not just doing it because he can, but to create an undulating musical canvas. A sonic landscape designed for earphone listening. One wonders why no one else has ever tried that same formula. Much of the secret to Zeppelins magic dust is the astonishing production and mixing skills of Jimmy Page, and not just the playing of the individuals. Ten Years Gone is another example of this incomprehensible “guitar army” approach to song construction. And the galloping horses rhythm of Achilles would never work if it was a shorter song, a shorter composition. You are riding into battle relentlessly and gets absorbed into the journey, invested in the story. It is too long and too complicated to be a hit, but many, like me, think it is one of the finest arrangements and compositions Jimmy ever created. It is panoramic cinema scope sensory overload. Put your headphones on and crank the volume up! Cheers to miss Verdy 🍺
Welcome to the Led Zeppelin album that was not supposed to exist! Prior to embarking on a 1976 tour, Robert Plant severely broke his ankle resulting in him being in a wheelchair for most of the year. They decided to record an album instead, but they had no new material. Most of the songs were written in the studio based on jams they had during the sessions. There is very little variation in the instruments - electric guitar, bass, drums and vocals all the way through, not a keyboard or acoustic guitar to be found. Factiod: Achilles Last Stand was called The Wheelchair Song during rehearsals. The title was a play on the legend of Achilles, the strong man whose only weak spot was the heel of his foot. The final title was an "in joke" about Robert's broken ankle.
Great Lives: Achilles Last Stand: Knebworth 1979; For Your Life - O2 Arena Reunion Concert 2007 (w/Jason Bonham on drums; the only time ever played live).
Lying on the floor with headphones and listening to the intro of Achilles is how I will always remember this album. The 70's were diverse, and sometimes all it took was a good band and album.
The Heart song Barracuda was inspired from galloping riff of Achilles Last Stand. Also, fyi.. Robert Plant sang from a wheelchair on this album after a automobile accident. I bought this LP new in 76...really good 👍
Actually the story I heard was Heart were touring with Nazareth and one of Nazareth said to the Heart girls you p inched that Barracuda riff off our version of This Flight Tonight. They replied no, we lifted it from Zeppelins Achilles Last Stand.
Your favorite Led Zeppelin album is the one you happen to be listening to, but I listen to Presence more than their other LPs, so I guess it’s my fave.
Heart released Barracuda the year after Achilles' Last Stand. (They began by playing Zeppelin covers, did Battle of Evermore on the Singles movie soundtrack, and of course Stairway for Zeppelin and the Obama's, etc. at the Kennedy Center.)
I loved it immediately and listen quite regularly. For me, *Presence* is both ancient and futuristic-sounding simultaneously - timeless. 🔮 ‘Candy Store Rock’ and ‘Hots On For Nowhere’ are two songs I adore. When you’re married to the hottest chic, you no longer have to go searching for love... 🛋🍬💗
Sweet Sister Verdy, thank you again for posting, especially some groovy Zep. Your smile , as usual, has made my day delightful. If I believed in Blessings, your work here would be easily classified as such.
Great, genuine reaction as always! I always loved the clever play on words with "Achilles Last Stand" - referencing Achilles' Heel, the only part of his body that was not immune to injury because (in later versions of the myth, anyway) it was where his mother held him when she dipped him in the river Styx to confer invulnerability. And alluding to (Achilles look-alike?) Robert Plant's recent very serious ankle injury In a car accident. In my top three Led Zep songs of all time, although the rest of the album does not excite me quite as much. "Where the mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the earth..." - all the lyrics in the song have specific meaning and often with plays on words. And guitar, drums and bass all absolutely outstanding.
Time has been kind to this album as it has now been seen as underrated as opposed to somewhat disappointing after Physical Graffiti. That always was wrong, incredible performances in Achilles Last Stand and Tea For One. More Zeppelin Magic! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
You would think that the Leslie Amp was invented just before this album came out, Jimmy uses it in all the songs on this album. A great but heavy peace of equipment to tour around the world with.
Young people always have the best of both worlds, old and new. They know the new stuff and have access to all the old stuff. They just have to find it.
FYI: Achilles is said A-Kill-ease (from the Greek mythology) ... I remember when this album first came out, they just changed the legal drinking age in BC to 19 and that year I could legally go to the bar with my older friends. When I first heard Achilles Last Stand I loved it, but it wasn't until I tried to learn to play it did I realize just how complicated the guitar playing was, I just couldn't get the right cadence (the matching speed and sound) just right. Even now It's still a challenge, but I love the song even more.
@@treetopjones737 Yes. Albion (also mentioned in the song) Son of Poseidon, the Greek God of the Sea makes an appearance as well. Lots of Mythological references in this one (Atlas, etc). A great song!!

An album that most of the people and critics love to hate. It's also not my favourite but Achilles is one of their absolutely top progressive metal tracks. Robert Plant was recovering from a serious car accident at that time and Jimmy Page was working for a long time on the production to get it more or less okay. Their version of the blues gospel song Nobody's Fault but mine (on side 2) is also a highlight. They even did it better on their No Quarter album.
The very first album I ever bought and my favourite album by my favourite band. Jimmy's solo on "For Your Life" is one of his best and most underrated.
Love your reactions Verdy, especially to my fav band, Zeppelin! I think they recorded this in like just 3 weeks, or 17 days or something, amazing. Jimmy stayed up at least one night putting the finishing overdubbed guitars on. "Achilles Last Stand" is, I think, Jimmy's favorite Zeppelin song. Easy to see (hear) why! The whole album is an electric hard rock BANGER! "Tea for one" closes it out on side 2, but is a sloooow, lovely, deeply emotional Blues tune. Fantastic stuff!
This is THE underrated Led Zeppelin album! Starts off with a banger, Achilles Last Stand, a precursor to Iron Maiden and other heavy metal acts that followed. Love that you’re finally getting to this gem. Takes a few listens to get into the album as a whole, but it’s well worth it.
Thanks for your reaction. This is a very great LP that, in my opinion, it underrated. that said, I am looking forward to seeing your reaction to the live version of Dazen and Confused (MSG 73).
They wrote and recorded this album in 2 Fucking weeks . No keyboard's . Page bragged about that . The next album was filled with keyboards ( In Through The Out Door) .John Paul Jones got the last laugh ..
FYIJIC. Achilles was the mightiest of Greek warriors during the Trojan War, invulnerable save for a single spot on his ankle where the gods held his body as they dipped him in invincibility sauce. Brad Pitt played him in the movie Troy. Today we informally call the tendons on the back of the lower leg where the foot joins "Achilles tendons". I suspect that as a footballer you've gotten kicked there many times.
Thanks so much for reacting to this album! Honestly, I’ve only listened to Achilles Last Stand and Nobody’s Fault But Mine (probably my favorite Zeppelin song), so this is a treat for me as well.
Achilles last stand is a most difficult song to play for the drummer, at something like 146 beats per minute in the fast parts, that is fast, espacially for a long song.
Achilles' Last Stand is Zep's most underrated song, and their last great epic. In an otherwise low point in their career, somehow Jimmy Page still managed to orchestrate a Top Five or maybe even Top Three enduring masterpiece.
Love it. The lyrics seem to be about touring and the fun they look forward to having. I think Plant's optimism and love of fun had a lot to do with keeping them together. I got to see them twice back in the day
"Achilles' last stand" is an absolute Masterpiece. And, besides perhaps, "When the Leeve Breaks" and "Kashmir", the apex and summit of John Bonham's magical art of drumming.
