Def my number 1, Jimmys solos are so different from his norm, so much space. It is definitely a journey best song on an amazing album! This is sacriledge, but the best live version is Jimmy with the Black Crowes.

Wow. I’ll have to check out that version with the Black Crowes. For some reason, could never bring myself to listen to it. Agree on his leads here- relaxed, spacious and emotional. One of his best, along with (imho) the solos in “The Song Remains the Same” and believe it or not, “I’m Gonna Crawl”. The pure emotion and pain in that solo always brings the hair up on the back of my neck

Definitely needs inclusion on, "The Acid Trip" sound track. Tapped me into a great memory.
Disrecommend "Behind Blue Eyes" on the sound track. Love the song, but the first time I heard it, paranoia made me call for an ambulance thinking I had been poisoned with strychnine. Strychnine was reputed to have, sometimes, been added to LSD for more kick from it's sub-toxic inebriation.

yeah.... one of the many tracks i could barely wait for whilst doing the ''Zeppothon''
her's a fun thing t'do, listen carefully to the linkage and sound bites between the tracks on physical and then if you've got the 'software' rearrange them so it makes sense (kinda) low and behold you then have Zeps' one and only ''concept' album, didn't think Page was gunna make it easy for ya, no clues but bare in mind what Page was interested in other than ''the craft'' oh that was a clue then couldn't resist..... all the best.

Bron-Yr-Aur was the name of a cottage in Wales used by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page in 1970 as quiet out-of-the-way place to rest and write music. I find Page's guitar solo a perfect little gem--listen to it often, the notes rolling back and forth from one ear to the other.

I recently watched an interview with Robert who wrote Ten Years Gone about a girl he was in love with when Zeppelin was just getting started. Basically, he received an ultimatum to stay with her or pursue his dream. He always had feelings for her but after ten years gone, he realized he did the right thing. As an old man who has regrets, this song really hits me hard. Zeppelin is like fine wine. As it ages, the more nostalgic it becomes, and you hear details you never noticed 50 years ago. Oh, what could have been?

Ten Years Gone - a rare song featuring a Stratocaster... not normally a guitar in Jimmy Page's arsenal. But it sounded great! And the song also has my all time favourite lead break too. Just a wonderful song, and all of Side Three is brilliant too. Loads of great keyboards by JPJ and Bonzo was just totally on fire.

That was a great observation about the drums and guitar playing together; in most bands, the bass and drums play to each other, making up the "rhythm section", but one of the things that gave Led Zeppelin their sound, is that Jimmy Page and John Bonham often played off each other more.

Robert Plant didn't do a lot of 'introspective' lyrics with Zeppelin, but he nailed that feeling with "Ten Years Gone". It's only grown in stature, close to fifty years gone now since he and Page wrote it.

Yeah, kind of a theme with this side of , like u said, going from slow to fast! The mellotron that the bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones plays at the beginning (and yeah, in the middle) of "In the Light" reminds me of seagulls crying as they fly over a lonely strand of beach, and then just two minutes later we're hip-deep in a riff so nasty it could make a stripper blush, lol! THAT is Led Zeppelin, masters of The Spectrum. "Light and Shade," as Jimmy Page likes to say. It was fun watching you experience it!

In the Light really showcases John Paul Jones' best keyboard work. He was such a multi-instrumentalist. Not only was he a great bassist, but he could also play a mean synthesizer on this and No Quarter. Of course the other three are brilliant, but without the artistry of JPJ, I don't think there would've been that much depth and mood in a lot of their songs, and he really pulls it off here.

So, Ten Years Gone, what an incredible piece of music. A true opus, it takes you on a journey, it meanders around your soul! Those layered guitars are so lush, and Jimmy gives the solo space, lets it breathe more than normal. The opening riff is just one of the funnest to play, harder than many think, it needs such a deft touch, true God light and shade. What a line, We are Eagles of one nest, the rest is in our soul! Wow! How the hell did Percy come up with that! Takes a few times to really sink into to your pysche, but it then lives with you. My personal fav song, along with Stairway, Dickey Betts Blue Sky, Free's Mouthful of Grass, and of course the entire Zepathon, to name a few!

Thing is, back then, we knew we were hearing incredible music. Anyone who lived through the early 1960s, before the British invasion, had to know that most of the current music then was crap. Radio stations weren't playing Rock 'n' Roll as much as during the 1950s because there wasn't that much new R 'n' R being produced. There was a lot of gum-ball pop and a lot of just silly songs ("Does your chewing-gum lose it's flavor (on the bedpost overnight)?" "The Monster Mash" - all gentle pablum. About the only pop music worth anything was coming from the girl groups. And there was the Folk Music scene, which was musically extremely good, but it was something to go to sleep to, not to dance to.
So when the British invasion happened, we noticed, big time. And we knew as more and more great groups came on the scene that we were hearing something special. We just didn't know that it would all disappear from current music in our life-times. There's some good stuff out there, somewhere, but it's not like the golden harvest of music that was bestowed on us in the 1960-1970s, with some even lasting into the 1980s.
When LZ hit the air-waves or on our record-players, we know how good they were, because we had a very low basis for comparison in the pre-British Invasion era.
That gives me hope, because it seems like popular music is going through the same low-point right now. The only way forward is up. People going back to years before now, maybe to use that as a launch pad for something really new, like the British invasion, which was based on Blues and Rock 'n' Roll from decades before. Something new built on something solid and old. I just wonder if I'll live long enough to hear that.

      @@jamesgloriod7195 I hope so, too.
One of my favorite music-related channels is "Rick Beato". He's a musician/producer who talks mostly about guitar-related materials, but he has an amazing familiarity with music from all eras, does interviews with the famous, and is familiar with current trends in music. One point he made in a fairly recent video is that, based on sales in the industry, people are listening to music from the 80s and before - like 50% is for old vinyl. People aren't happy with what's coming out on record labels. Part of that he says is due to the fact that major recording labels are basing decisions on who to promote on computer projections of sales, rather than on A&R people going out to the hinterlands and actually listening to up-and-coming groups. The bean-counters are in charge, not the people who know something about music, and as a result, we're getting the same stuff over and over again.
That's kind of what happened with the British invasion. The Brits were enthralled by blues and rock 'n' roll, which wasn't getting any air time here to speak of. So, when they came here, they were bringing our own music back to us in new forms.
I remember the first time I saw "The Buddy Holly Story". My first impression was, "Now I know where the Beatles came from."
      It can happen.

The shimmering guitar effect was most likely created by running the guitar through a cabinet with a spinning speaker. The spinning creates a pitch shifting as it moves toward and away from the microphone. This cabinet is what gave Wurlitzer organs their distinctive sound. No often used with other instruments.

Every time I bought a new stereo component starting back in the 70s, this album side was always the first "test" of the system. I am glad you are experiencing it.

      Saludos

The Inner light is a stunning song! One of my favorite unknown songs of theirs and the lyrics are deep. To me it’s about world weariness and the soul going on because the flesh is weak. As they say, the Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. But you will find the road! You will find a way through and I’ll be right next to you. I will never leave you. Powerful song!

The entire two album set is great, but this series of songs in particular is superb. In The Light is great, and Ten Years Gone is about Plant’s old girlfriend giving him an ultimatum … her or the band. We know what his answer was 😂

I played the first two sides a lot , back in the day. I remember my third side has some clicks and pops on it so didn't get played so often . So SO good to hear these tracks after so many years . Bron Yr Aur, Ten Years Gone, Down by the Seaside are all lovely , and it's takes me back almost 50 years .....
( Ah , nostalgia isn't what it used to be, I know😉 ) Almost like hearing them again for the first time . Thank you Verdy ! ❤

The funny thing is that there wasn't really a change in rhythm at any point within "What Is and What Should Never Be." There are parts that are stripped down, and other parts that are louder and more full instrumentally, but they are all basically at the same pace. It's an illusion that the quiet and more sparse sections are "slower." They really aren't.

But see, for example, Listen To this Eddie (brilliant version) June 21, 1977 and also Knebworth 1979. Also Page&Plant 1996; I have these concerts. Have fun with all kind of good music.

Disc Two, Side One. It's my third favorite of the Physical Graffiti sides. It's good but doesn't wow like Disc One. If I had to choose a favorite, it would be Bron Yr Aur. I could listen to that instrumental all day.

"Bron-Yr-Aur" means "breast of gold" in Welsh, with "breast" in the sense of "brow of a hill". It's the name of a cottage near Machynlleth in Wales, which was used as a writing retreat by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant in 1970.
