"In My time Of Dying" is IMHO one of the best and most intense songs, Led Zeppelin released.
Everyone clamors about Robert Plant's singing - for damn good reason - but everyone overlooks or forgets to mention his outstanding harmonica work. He was/is an excellent harmonica player!
Mr. Page can Play "the mouth organ" also . Listen to the Coverdale/Page album . That's Jimmy honkin' that out !!
...as in "when the levee breaks" for one example (out of many*)
@@garymarkley7219 Absolutely
That "guitar that sounds like a harmonica" on Custard Pie, actually IS a harmonica played by Robert Plant through some kind of distortion effect.
Hi! "In My Time of Dying" Simply wonderfull. You are listening this song for the first time. I am 70 years old. I Listen it since it was released and my passion grows every time. Welcome to the group of Led Zeppelin addicts.
Led Zeppelin is one of the greatest rock technicians in the music industry!!! "Physical Graffiti" shows a diversity never heard before!!! Led Zeppelin will rock forever!!!
Its a harmonica, Robert Plant is the one blowing it , he plays it on several of their tracks.
yup, and I love those tunes where Plant goes off on the harp -Levee breaks/bring it on home, etc.
PEACE.
Agreed. It sounds to me like they run it through some processing, but it's a jaw harp for sure.
Yeah bang on but that is where the confusion comes in as it is a harmonica sounding a little like an electric guitar rather than the other way round by using guitar style peddle effects on it to make it sound more down and dirty
Nobody's Fault But Mine....
@tektoniks_architects yes!
My favorite Zeppelin album. Their musical diversity is incredible on this album. So many great memories listening to this album. Absolutely timeless!!!
For me too.A great,great album.
Completely agree, my favourite album too and, covering with guitar these songs , you can understand how great was Jimmy Page.
Like most of my late 70s music listening memories, they all run together. I’d meet with the guys at Craig’s house, do a bong hit, and either settle in to listen or play ping pong. There was an enclosed patio attached to the garage. Craig was the youngest of three brothers and I think the oldest had worn out the parents. They left us alone pretty much, or checked in on us early and then left us alone. So I have a general memory. I know I first heard this album at Craig’s house, but I don’t have a discrete memory of it.
I’m pretty sure I have some great memories from this period, if I could only remember them.
I am in agreement. It's the one that has the songs I listen to the most. I know everyone (& critics) always say the 4th album is their best (I love it as well), but this is the one I always come back to.
A great album one of my favorites. 1975 was a good year. In my time of dying a classic song.
IN MY TIME OF DYING, JUST FABULOUS, THE ENTIRE LP IS A FAVORITE. ITS...🔥🔥🔥🎸 Gospel song Written by Blind Willie Johnson first recorded in 1927 ❤
An album that starts with Custard Pie, The Rover and In My Time Of Dying doesn't need to deliver anything else and yet it delivers. In fact, The Rover is an underrated gem within their discography.
I like how Verdy noted that chorus guitar part on Rover... it subtle but its a tip that this is going to be an evolved Zep.
And then it all comes together for side 3.
To me Physical Graffiti (Side 1) and LZ IV (Side 2) are my favorite's by Zep.
rover so underrated
My favorite LED Zeppelin album! 😎👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
At the end of "In My Time Of Dying" you hear drummer John say "THAT'S GOING TO BE THE ONE, ISN'T IT?" because they are trying to record his drums together, he's asking if they got it right, if it's worthy of being on the album. Recording generally starts with the drums first, the other guys play along with you as a guide but only the drums are getting fully mic'ed up; the other instruments and the vocals are added at a later time. John's asking if that's the one because he suspected they had something great on that take, and indeed they did
"Come and have a listen then."
"Oh, yes, thank you."
Probably their best album. It’s their only double album and they were all at the top of their game at this time. “The Rover” always brought goosebumps and chills down my spine.
As a huge Zeppelin fan that grew up in the 70's this is arguably their best album. Let the hate begin! Seriously, this album is up there as one of their best IMHO. Of course Led Zeppelin I, II, II, IV and Houses of the Holy are right up there. They were just so good and were constantly creative and experimenting and changing. Truly remarkable.
Not a controversial view my friend. I think a lot of people share that view- I know that I do. Led Zep IV is their best KNOWN album, but it doesn’t mean it’s their best. I prefer this, the debut and Houses of the Holy to it
Presencia
No hate here. I already possessed their 2nd and 5th albums, but when I heard this one I immediately went out and bought all the others then available, and apparently I’m not alone because the sales of all their records shot back up the charts.
They’re all great,it’s hard to pick a favorite for me.
Yay! Finally! This is their greatest album. In my honest opinion.
I agree!
Totally agree
"This is their greatest album."
Same for me, in my dishonest opinion.
In my honest opinion it's "Houses of the Holy" one day, and "Led Zeppelin I" the next two . . . . :-)
You speak the truth
It might be their best but i'd also add it's their peak album.
Never a dull moment on that album. That was the soundtrack of my summer when I was 15... in a galaxy far far away... ;-
This AND Wish You Were Here ( pink floyd) in the same year . how lucky could a 15 yr old get ?!
In My Time of Dying is one of my favorite Led Zeppelin sleeper songs. In college, I used to turn it up and play the "air drums" to that song. One of my favorite John Bonham drum songs.
No, that really is a harmonica, played by Robert Plant.
he is a remarkably good harmonica player..
I had a holiday in New York City back in 2017 and was looking up what might have been worth paying a visit and just happened to find out that the buildings photographed for the album's cover was in the city so I took the time to visit them. The real buildings have an extra floor compared to what is on the album cover because they had to remove one floor in order to get it to fit onto the traditional square album-cover shape used with vinyl records - and later CDs - and later vinyl records again!
The drums in "My time of dying" are colossal
One of my favorites among thousands of songs. Top 5 for sure
@@Prone2ThrillHave you checked out some of the new rock music of today lately?
My favorite Bonzo drum track
@@SDsailor7 Such as? Seriously, I’d really like to know.
@@MsAppassionata There's this power trio that are making a lot of noise (in a good way) and have thousands of fans all over the world. They are called the Warning, check out one of their concerts at teatro Metropolitan CDMX live 2022
And you will see how good they are. The drummer won the best Rock drummer of 2023 by the Drumeo awards and also voted best up and coming drummer by Modern drummer magazine.
The bassist is a Spector featured artist since the age of 14 all the song in that concert are great in my opinion.
But check them out and you be the judge. Let me know if you like them or not.
Cheers
In my time of dying is so tasty and one of the finest examples of drumming ever laid down! That slide work by Jimmy stands out pretty well too...
I bought the original album , was told by my Dad not to take it to school, had it stolen, and my Mum bought me the copy I have to this day 🎉
John Paul Jones' bass work at the beginning of The Rover is brilliant. It's the perfect counterpoint to Pagey's masterful guitar introduction. Also, I love how you get lost in the music, great review!
Hi Verdy , the thing i like about your reactions is you doing entire albums one side at a time. When these albums came out you knew about a couple of months in advance. You'd start saving up some money anticipating for that day. When that day arrived you go to the local record store and buy as many new albums that were coming out that day that you could afford. Then you get home unwrap all the albums , put one on your turntable and sit back and read the lyrics from the record sleeve. It wasn't just listening , it was the expierience of the smell of new vinyl , reading the liner notes & lyrics and hearing that music for the first time. Magic.
I agree!!it was like sipping hot chocolate with whipped cream and starting in onsome delicious desert!!!
I also agree. And your channel is like when you would do it with a buddy, listening, and experiencing it together. Thank you!!!!
Don’t forget spending hours in the record store, shifting through the music, trying to find that gem, it was the hunt. Everybody there doing the same
Ahhh…Somebody else who understands. 😌 Oh, how I miss those days.
@@MsAppassionata I've retired today!!!! And would add that I love to see younger ppl on YT enjoy hearing old classics. The missing element for me is first hearing them on a dance floor. Now those days were absolutely the best!
Really good album
Custard Pie was taken from a song by blues man Sleepy John Estes called Drop Down Mama, written in 1935. In My Time of Dying came from a song by gospel blues artist Josh White called Jesus Gonna Make Up My Dying Bed, written in 1933. Zeppelin did a great job turning them into power blues rock songs.
👍🇬🇧❤EVERY ZEPPELIN LP IS PRECIOUS XOXOXOX 🎸 BEST BAND EVER !!!!
I love the funky beats that Jon Bonham brings. Wild time signatures that brings a unique flavor to the music!
It's just so full of amazing riffs. If it were a meal it would be a feast at a Michelin Star restaurant.
Best album EVER!
They are collective Genius! 😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
If you get a chance, you have to check out the album Plant and Page did in 1998, "Walking Into Clarksdale". Not only is it criminally underrated, but it's about as close as we will ever get to one last great Led Zeppelin album. You won't be disappointed.
I really enjoy it that you will play the entire album, from start to finish ! That is exactly how I will listen to my music at home, and in my opinion, is the best way to listen to albums !!! It's how the band intended !
Jimmy Page's guitar work during the lyrics when Page is singing "In my time of dying...etc" is not bends, he is using a slide to move between notes, and it is some excellent slide work.
KASHMIR ofc One of their biggest songs ever. Off this album!
It'll be the next video, happily!
PHYSICAL GRAFFITI is a pure power.
1. "Custard Pie".
2. "The Rover"
3. "In My Time of Dying"
I recommend you to watch the live Moby Dick performance. It's something that you've never seen before or thought was possible. This will give you a perspective on why John Bonham is the greatest drummer of all time.
Best all round album they ever did. I bought this 8Track tape the day it was released. John Bonham beating the skins off the drums.Thank You, Verdy for checking this one out
Led Zeppelin were known for their groove! He was a special, unique drummer!
Yes he sure was
What new rock music are you listening these days?
Custard Pie is another great foray into funk by LZ. John Paul Jones' bass is so underrated on the funk tracks.
Hi Verdy, first of all...I hope the surgery went well 😉. Physical Graffity is a masterpiece and it is curious that it is a collage of songs recorded for the album and others that were left over from previous albums, hence the variety of styles that can be found. The best rock band in history at the peak of their career, this album was an obsession for a long time, I listened to it all day and everywhere with my Walkman.🎧
Masterpiece.
John Paul Jones and John Bohanom Base and Drums on My Time Of Dying CLASSIC!
Great reaction! Make sure to react to the live version of Moby Dick, it's the msot insane thing youi will EVER SEE! The greatest drummer of all time, John Bonham.
Amazing album. Their best. React to the Moby Dick drum solo live. Your mind will be BLOWN, It's crazy
A brilliant album. Totally showcases their incredible versatility. And their ear for a great groove and tune ❤
This brings me back to being a 15 year old, we played the hell out of this album!
in my time of dying was recorded live in the studio! they basically jammed for 11 minutes and they didnt have an ending so they left it as is haha. bonham was MONSTROUS!!!! nobody else could do that!
Most excellente' REACTION !
a song like My Time Of Dying would never make it in today's world; with so much empty space during parts of the song that really drive an emotional response.
As others below have stated, any harmonica work is Robert playing it. He is an accomplished harmonica player, live! I saw Zeppelin live in 1975 at Long Beach Arena, Calif. Tickets : $10.50 for 3 1/2 Zep Hours. Peace.
This is still incredible to hear even today.....
Ahhh, now you get to experience Zeppelins greatest song, Ten Years Gone . An absolute masterpiece. Those of us that are Zepophiles all tend to agree, the haunting ethereal Ten Years Gone is possibly their greatest work!
Love that song, in my top 5
This is the album that will make you realise this band are unmarched to this day.
not heard any Ten Years After then...... ? Start with their album called ''Shhhh''
It's a good one and the first TYA album I bought a long time ago !
The day this was released, I was at the record store waiting for the place to open. Bought my copy, went back to my dorm at college, put it on my stereo with my headphone on (I had quite a system at the time as I also worked in a hi-fi store and got to buy stuff direct from the manufacturer on consignment at around half the retail price). Anyway, I listened to the album straight through. It was different from their other albums, which was nothing new for the LZ fan universe. But certainly, there wasn't a bad song in the lot. It could sound experimental, gritty, and even live at times. Remarkable album. And though I like their later stuff, they never again did anything to rival this one as a collection, only some single tracks here and there that pushed the envelope of their potential. I believe this was the first album released under their own private label, Swansong. Kind of ironic in a way since in many ways this album signalled their creative zenith as a group. Everything after this was anti-climatic.
listen to the linkage and continuity segments between each track and then rearrange them and you have Zeppelins one and only concept album..... Think Page was gunna make it easy for ya'....
I believe this is zeppelins best work. A masterpiece at loud volumes
One of the best albums in the history of music.
My favorite Zeppelin album. Every song is a masterpiece, wait till you get to Kashmir, their greatest song. Also, you HAVE to check out Moby Dick live! It's the greatest thing you will ever see in your life. You'll be thanking me.
Finally a great album again ;-) BTW It is Robert playing the harmonica, not a guitar (no shame!). If you get around to their live album The Song Remains The Same, that's something else.
Also please react to their swan song concert "Celebration Day" (available on UA-cam). Give Robert Plant two songs to warm up and they play their hearts out right out of the screen
The Fact that She's not BLUSHING During Custard Pie tells me she Hasn't Grasped the True Meaning of that Tune! And the Theme of it is Helped Along by an ORAL Instrument, the Harmonica. Played by Robert Himself!
LOL!
My favourite Zep album, and the Rover a brilliant track that is rarely mentioned
It’s my favorite album, because it has the most songs
That's REAL harmonica!
for the album Robert Plant himself played it on separate track alongside his own vocal track, but for the concert they hired session musicians
One of the GREATEST rock albums. Plant is on point, as usual. Some of Pages cleanest and tightest work. Jones really stands out without really standing out, if that makes any sense. As always, Bohnam is an absolute animal on those drums. It doesn't get much better than this.
The Album "Presence" the song Nobody's Fault But Mine, KILLA HARMONICA!
Thank you my dear for Zeppelin. More please
In My Time is so bloody relentless and wonderful! "that's gotta be be the one has'nt it?" Sure was John 👍
OK , They made 9 Albums , keep them coming !
“I know to trip is just to fall.” Robert Plant…. “The Rover.” Your in for the musical ride of your young life with this double album girlfriend. 👈🥳
Verdy, please do the Moby Dick drum solo live. I am DYING to see your reaction to it. Please. I was searching for your reaction to it for 20 minutes, I noticed that you only did the studio version, which is good, but nowhere near as mind blowing as live. Thank you.
That actually was a harmonica on Custard pie. Robert is doing an overdub (he was a great harmonica player)
Verdy, I mean this in the best way, you do a great stank face. It's a compliment to the original artists and it's a sign of someone who knows what's what.
This Music hits the Soul so Hard! watching your emotion proves what I learned some 48 years ago when my Father introduced my brothers and I to Led Zeppelin. Forever fan!
One of the best by one of the very best! Zep rules! 🎸
It's been awhile since I was last on your channel. This was the best way to come back.
Hard to believe this is 1975. Still stands up today. Stands up as good as anything.
The staple of the 70's the Harmonica!
And was featured on 5 of Zep's studio albums
P.s. John Paul and Jimmy Page were Studio Musicians Cream of the Crop!!!!!!!!!!
Love a Young Girl getting to know Led Zeppelin I am 47 started when i was 10
One of My Fav. Alublems
OMG I can't believe you're doing this album! I'm so excited!
By dumb luck I happened to come back to your Led Zep IV reaction a couple of days ago, and actually re-watched MUCH of it, lol! I noticed it had been a long time since you, well, rocked and rolled to Zep, but then went about my business. Only to see the algos tell me you were doing THIS, muy fav, album by my fav band! Side One is masterful metal, Side Two is possibly even better hard rock. Sides 3&4 are where they really stretch their wings and show you what else they can do! Cool reaction, Verdy!
This was the Album of my 1975 year, I was 14 Yeah this album passes the test of time 50 plus years old. Diamonds developed as a result of time!!!
My one and only Zep album, as a dyed in the wool Yes man this is superb in every single way
Kashmir is the track that you will never forget ! !
Led Zeppelin in their prime 🤘🤘
This album is zeppelin’s masterpiece
the Rover is awesome, top 5 Zep song. The blueprint for Van Halens first 2 albums.
Looked to me like you hit that classic "stank face" during "In My Time of Dying" 😂
Joy! My lovely sister getting another dose of Zeppelin! At this point they have absolutely nothing to prove and this affords them freedom to do as they like, and boy howdy I likes me some of this.
It's my favorite album of theirs
John Paul Jones was gonna leave the Band before Physical Graffiti . Robert Plant convinced Him to stay . Thank Fucking God !! Thank You Mr. Jones ..
This is Zeppelin's best album.
That WAS a harmonica, played thru an amplifier with the same sort of distortion as an electric guitar thru an amplifier. It's an old trick first used in the 1950's by blues musicians like Little Walter and Muddy Waters. Jimmy Page is not bending the strings in the intro of In My Time of Dying. He is playing the song with a slide on his pinky finger. A slide is a smooth cylinder placed over the finger which allows him to "slide" up and down the frets making that sound. Factoid: In My Time of Dying is the band playing live in the studio. No overdubs.
"Feels pretty good up here"
I musta done somebody some good
Hi Verdy,
Welcome back to my era again ☺️.
Custard Pie: what a catchy start to this Superb and Classic Album.
The Rover: Adore the fact You love their metronomic and rhythmic paired up Bass and Drum riffs as much as I still do.
In my Time of Dying: Slide Guitar and that Strong mirroring Drum rhythm, pure perfection.
Great seeing the sheer joy in Your facial expressions now the lens is closer but kinda miss seeing Your air guitar work which was always a delight to watch too 😊.
What makes Your Reactions So enchanting is that it's So DEEPLY Evident that You are into it just as much I was then & still am today and Your captivating Smile brings back so many wonderful memories of how they snared my emotions all those years ago.
Yet another Delightful Reaction.
Thanks 😊
So pleased you finally got to it !
In the Light
Very underated song
Yes! It's more than acceptable to break into air guitar when listening to Zep! Keep up the great work!
Love to see you smile at this awesome music Verde!!
