My father was a navigator on night fighter mosquitos and flew on these airfield attack missions. We did talk about his experiences so a couple of practical points may help.
1 They usually attack by following the target down the runway because they had a longer and easier shot and were not facing the targets guns.
2 their mossies were fitted with more advanced radar that had a more bulbous nose cone than the variant you have shown.
    3. The Luftwaffe tried to thwart these missions by fitting disposable take off rockets to get their planes off the ground more quickly. This of course backfired because it made the target taking off much easier to track and shoot down in the dark.

My grandfather's next-door neighbour also flew the Mosquito attacking enemy fighters at night. He would follow the enemy fighter at a distance and wait for the Germans to turn on the runway landing lights and snipe him as he was landing, flying at very low level and the speed of the Mosquito made it very difficult for the ground defences to get a decent shot. Obviously, it sounds counter-intuitive to say this would be much more dangerous in daylight, but the Mossie boys did it at night and were very successful at it.

With these things on these missions, the key tactic seems to be to zip in, dump as much ordnance on the target as fast and as accurately as possible to lighten the plane, and then put the throttle to the firewall and run like a bunny for home.
Make one pass to kill the target, but never more than two, and then scamper.
This could be a really fun series.

Historically that’s about right. When you attack a heavily defended ground target you need the element of surprise. Mozzies were mainly used against precision targets. In WW2 that meant either going in slow, steep and dive bomb, (Stuka, SBD), or low level, high speed, Mozzie! So low you simply can’t miss. Either way you end up low over the target area. If you go back for seconds you’ve lost the element of surprise. German 20mm vierling AAA was deadly at low altitude. That’s the beaty of this aircraft. One pass with rockets, bombs and fixed guns a cannons puts an ungodly amount of fire power in that one punch. Then you run home. Nobody could catch them unless they had a huge altitude advantage. 262 at the end of the war could but they were few and far in between.

Although the Mosquito had surprisingly good agility for a twin engine aircraft; do not be tempted to try and turn fight with single engine fighters. You will be shot down. The greatest asset of the Mosquito is its speed, so once you have made your strike, hit the deck and run for home. Don't get greedy and tempt fate!

Thankfully back then we had all the wonderful furniture makers and traditions to build these fantastic aircraft. (let alone all the aircrews who gave everything they had for us who flew them) Sadly we couldn't do it if it was today. We would have lost the war. That's something to think about.

So long as you keep your speed, the Mosquito is a difficult adversary for Focke-Wulfs and Messerschmitts. Not a good idea to get in a turning fight that bleeds off your speed. I count 4x .303 MGs and 4x 20mm cannon in the nose - just a good squirt will do for the He-111s. She seems to be a very stable gun platform - one heck of an aircraft!

Would a comparison between the Mossie and a P38 be possible?

    • @bluestorm3628
      @bluestorm3628 2 роки тому

Possible yes, but not necessary as the p 38 wins out in speed and weapon payload, the only thing I can say is that the mosquitoes guns do pack a bugger sting than the p 38 and has more ammo. But basically the p 38 wins in both fighter and fighter bomber roles and is just more versatile.
Now sure the mosquito was a very versatile as well however it’s was made in multiple variants and yes they did the job efficiently in the war, but sadly in the game we only get the one and while I thinks great the p 38 just does the jobs much better than the mosquito.
Long story short it is wiser to use the p 38 in missions than the mosquito but I’ll say that the mosquito is still an very ok backup if and when needed.

@@comesahorseman hi, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to read my very very long comment.
Hopefully to clear up any negativity from my comment if there was any.
In honesty if I had to pick my favourite one of the two I’d pick the mosquito, The report I’ve previously given, was granted maybe a bit harsh in some areas but I thought an honest opinion on the two aircrafts statistics and capabilities for in-game would be fair for others who play (me being one of them that has flown both, of which both are an absolute marvel to fly)
Overall if I had to choose my personal favourite of the two will be the mosquito, but if I had to inform someone which of the two would bring more and easier success for them in a mission it would be the p 38 lighting.

I remember seeing a interview with a RAF pilot years ago he went up for a sortie against some 109s and bomber's there was only about 10 of them in the first group against 40 or so German aircraft and they pretty much just played chicken with the bomber's to start with and forced them to break formation.

@@matthewcharles5867 I watched a UA-cam video interview of famous British test pilot, Eric "Winkle" Brown. During the time when he was stationed on an escort carrier guarding North Atlantic convoys, he developed an effective tactic against Fw 200 "Condor" bombers. He could approach the bomber head-on, dead level in his F4F Martlet fighter almost unscathed and open up on the enemy cockpit to deadly effect. It seems the forward-firing German gunners couldn't depress their MGs enough - it was like flying through a tunnel. Can you imagine the nerve it took to break off only at the last second?

Read a letter from one of them who wrote to his mother saying being a gunner in the Lancaster's was getting a bit boring so he was going to go on pathfinder runs , he lasted only a few missions with the pathfinders . Lots of bravery with a bit of luck needed to survive.
