I am in awe of the programming that goes into these flight sims. You are talking about the plane as if it were real, hardly needing to mention 'the game'
I almost NEVER comment on UA-cam, but you deserve this. I saw this video 6 or 7 years ago. I still come back and watch it on a regular basis. It’s one of the best videos I’ve ever found. You are so generous in the sharing of your knowledge, in this video as well as your others, and I appreciate you for that very much. You are partly responsible for my passion for WWII aircraft. Not all hero’s wear capes. But maybe you do wear a cape. I don’t know. Either way, you’re my hero. I want to fly just like you when I grow up.
I know this video is old but thanks for the great and thorough explanation. It's 2023 and I'm getting into this for fun and maybe a hobby. Your videos really help
Excellent information, I really hope you continue with this series, the detail and depth of information is very obvious. This video, just as your How to Fw190 will go a long way in improving refining my skills and snap decision making 👍
If you are moving from CloD to BoS/BoK like I am, some additional notes: 1. Take the F-4. It's pretty much an E-4 with more power and "done right" (Fly it and you'll know what I mean by that). Skip the G-Series in the beginning and ignore the 190's. 2. Pay SPECIAL attention to the notes, Sheriff gave about the tail wheel lock and careful throttle usage while on the ground. They are spot-on. Likewise, configure the stabilizer, you'll need it. 3. Don't worry about the seemingly "lesser" armament. The fact, that your single cannon is aligned with the center fuselage not only lets you ignore any convergence-setting games you did in CloD, but you'll also get more shots on target in average, which makes up for the loss of the cannon. Don't even consider the extra cannons under the wings. 4. try to enter the fight on continuous power. combat/emergency is not needed for manouvering and you should grow a habit of using it only, when you really need it. Just my $0.02
In this comment there are some things I disagree on. 1. F-4 like the E-4 with more power? ok steep since the F-4 does not turn as well by far. 4.) why tho? why do you want to fly on continous power into a fight? E-Power not needed for maneuvering? Why does it even have those engine capabilites then if they aren't needed in a fight?
I wrote "If you are moving from CloD to BoS/BoK like I am, some additional notes:". So take my comments in this context. 1. Sure, the F-4 does not turn like the E-4, but in the context of the games, this hardly matters. In CloD, the E-4 is not really capable of turing with the opponents (mainly Spits Mk1&2), so you generally tend not to fly it as a turnfighter. 2. In CloD, people tend to fly the E-4 at 100% throttle most of the time, and only hit WEP when needed (mapped to an extra button/key for that matter). In BoS, flying the F-4 at 100% means combat/emergency on all the time. Which is, what you get, when you map the throttle to a throttle quadrant. To put it in simple terms, my suggestion is "Do not fly at 100% throttle all the time, as you may have used to do in CloD". As for the general flight-characteristice, you are right. My comment was more geared towards the pilot switching from CloD to BoS/BoK. Which, by the way, also explains my "Skip the G-Series in the beginning and ignore the 190's." comment. You should of course not skip those planes permanently, as they can be rewarding to fly, especially the 190. I hope, that clarifys my comment.
in a turn fight with F-4, utilize high yo-yo as much as possible, to use your powerful engine and low weight to kw ratio to both gain you potential energy and to keep your turn angle as tight as possible. this alone will help you to win the energy advantage for your opponent, since you will keep gaining more energy than him. it will also give you game ending angles over the target you are chasing even before winning the energy race. This will be even amplified due to the fact that the russians will most often fly with their flaps open, consuming a ton of more energy than u already.
The engine torque does not "get less" as you take off. Whats happening is as your airspeed increases the sideways force provided by the rudder increases . Thus you don't need as much rudder applied at high air speeds as you do at low. That's the reason you decrease rudder the faster you go on takeoff.
Thank you so much, this should help me with War Thunder. Your tactics are very similar to others suggestion; however, your video does a MUCH better job explaining the role of a BF 109.
awesome video! I've just recently started flying online in IL2 and while I'm an okay pilot the AI seems to make weird decisions in a dogfight, this video has given me a nice look at how the theory translates into actually combat
Veteran Cliffs of Dover player returning: Everything about this video is spot on - I am baffled. Thank you for your contribution to the virtual war effort ;) Horrido!
Love your videos man,you explain things real well, Ive been playing this game since it came out basically in the early 2000s, i wouldn't consider myself a crack ace or anything closer to that but i enjoy the game immensely, i actually sometimes just enjoy flying by myself,no combat at all and i love landing because there are so many things involved that you have to get just right. A few minutes ago a buddy stopped by with his son who only plays shooting games like Call of Duty and things of that nature which i also enjoy once in a while and i set him up with my Trackir and he was crashing every few seconds and yanking on the stick really hard, stalling and going into spins and it reminded me of my early days, lol, who knows maybe he will talk to his dad and ask him to buy him the game,we might have a future ace in our midst's or he might just say "screw that game, thats too hard" only time will tell. Something i haven't done much on this new incarnation of the sim is bombing which i wanna get into with the Heinkel 111 or the Ju88, i did it quite a bit on the old Sturmovik but our new bomb sights are a little different, anyhow thanks for the videos, i subscribed the other day.
It took me around 10 attempts, but I finally performed a successful take off in the Bf 109 with this video as help. Thank you! Landing, on the other hand, was a little more dodgy.
This was a great tutorial on the ME109F. I've been thinking about playing this game for a while but was afraid of the learning curve. This video gave me quite a b it to think about and I'll be sure to watch it again and again.
Spanish Buchon pilots apparently filled one tire more than the other to compensate for torgue, although this might be exclusive to Merlin engined 109s, as I believe they had worse take off characteristics that the original 109.
I love these instructional films of yours. Maybe you could make some single engagement explanational films, like in the end of this video. With different engagements you find interesting in MP, with different planes etc. That was the most interesting and helpful explanation I've seen on YT, thanks. Learnt alot.
Love it. As a Twist rudder pilot it's hell to get the take off/landing right.. not to mention aiming with a joystick between your knees! still one day I will be this good :D
Veeery useful, thank you. I've planned to learn how to be a good FW 190 Pilot, but in Multiplayer often no FW 190 is available. Your Videos helped a lot :)
Great instructional video. I couldn't help but laugh at your "landing fuck ups" commentary as it came completely out of left field from such a concise, proper way of speaking. So far I have taxiing and take offs down, but I'm bleeding off too much speed circling the landing strip and I stall out. Bombing, strafing and dogfighting are a long ways off for me as I'm still concentrating on not crashing.
Nice job. After a long time grounded I am looking for an IL2 Sturmovik game that I can run in Windows 10. I tried my old disc with no luck. I happened onto this video and you helped me with my memory of the past. I had forgotten a lot, it has been a while. You tell it well. Now I will search for a download and try to get back into the pilot seat. Thanks.
Amazing video Sheriff! If I had some extra war bonds to send your way, I would. I just need a little bit more time due to life problems :/ Keep up the awesome videos, always a treat to watch and learn!
great video. I do hate the 109 for it seems to have every advantage in the game but like you said it s more about where you are at the start. anyone who dosnt manage there energy or advantage well will loose it and become the target.
Would be interested in your views on "Convergence" settings. I recently became aware that it matters even with cowl- and engine-mounted guns. It will (or should) also set the gun sight to compensate for the drop of the rounds over distance, and that is important no matter where the guns are mounted. It would seem that using 200 meters as a standard shooting range (and setting the convergence for that distance) would minimize the difference in impact points between the MGs and the cannon. With cowling-mounted guns you do not have the shotgun pattern of wing-mounted guns, so adjusting for differences in target distance (i.e. 200 meters may be a bit close for a ground target or a bomber) would be a matter of "Kentucky windage" up or down on the sight.
Nice to see after all this time, yet again! I have BOS now and am kind of struggling to get into it. Since I have extensive war thunder sim time, take off, landing, no problem, just I guess need to pick a server and go for it? 109s were my fav there too, so looking forward to it. Though the grind has tended to be my thing, and now it isn't present, kind of hard to find motivation I guess?
@@SheriffsSimShack I agree, the grinds are long and hard, with artificially weak planes. Problem being, I guess it is where I started in world of tanks, I think it is my brain craving the little bits of satisfaction it brings maybe? Who knows, but I am about to give it another shot. Cheers m8
I'm an 11 year old boy and I love il2 its the best to be honest I like the fw190 better because I think it has more ammo which would actually be useful
Can the "shallow climb" described here be effectively used also in the G2? I mean at medium altitudes (2-5K)? I fear the yaks will catch me at this altitudes...Thanks for these excellent videos!
"I personally like to see what is trying to kill me" .....I agree when it comes to the backplate. And It's the reason why I will not fly Desert Wings-Tobruk; there is no option to remove the backplate in any of the 109 F models.......and I can't see shit.
Hi Sherrif. Thx for the very helpful video. Helped me a lot getting into the game. One thing makes we wonder. I suppose you have some kind of Tracking Software, right? Could you please tell me which camera mode, camera settings you use? If I use Cockpit view I always get stuck for a moment on the x/y axis. If I use the free cockpit cam it works but the cam is stationary and for example leaning left-right won't work...
I have a bit of trouble to understand what your problem is. I use track IR and it takes over all axis. You can also adjust the sensitivy off all axis in the software. some more info: sheriffssimshack.com/
Thank you so much for the great video. Anyway, I'm confused; not by the content itself but its topic :D I want to start with IL-2 great battles, in particular I look into buying tank crew and one version for aircraft, most likely BoS. For none of the eastern front theaters can I find that either any Bf109 variants or Ju-87 are included. I would like to fly both of these and have seen videos (obviously) showing that they are in the sim. Can someone maybe explain to me, which theaters I need to buy to get those aircraft?
@@SheriffsSimShack Thanks, shame on me... I already read that exact website but on mobile, where due to blocking Java script, the right hand column with airplanes was not visible. D'oh. Anyway, thanks again for the quick help.
I LOVE the way the f4 flies, but, possibly because a) I can't shoot worth shit, and b) Japanese martial arts training emphasises the "one decisive cut", I'm more attracted to the 4x 20mm of the fw190. Anyway, fantastic video and a lot of good info for anyone using the F4 in any decent flight sim, not just BoS!
hello from spain.....I've been flying il2 for a year and it's hard for me to follow with the track-ir views....would you be kind and tell me all the curves of the axes of your T-ir profile...it would be helpful a lot of help for me. Thank you
Well thank you! This video (and the whole 'how to' series) is incredibly helpful. *thumbs up In case I identified your accent correctly: Super gut, werde ich sicher noch das eine oder andere Mal als Referenz nutzen. :) Beste Grüße!
Great video! Your skills are apparent and the thought put in also. I would assume you've read some up from actual pilots writings. I haven't been flying since the original IL2 version, but always found the F-4 the most formidable and easiest to fly. I loved it. I did purchase newer versions of the game but found many things changed for the worse, so basically lost interest. Now after viewing Battle of Stalingrad I'm intrigued. So long story short lol, what equipment do I need, computer wise, to get the same results as you show. Thanks and again enjoyed your video.
@sheriff, is the difference in fuel marker spacing perhaps to do with the plane getting better economy as with half a tank its 200kg lighter than it was with a full tank perhaps? I don't know as I'm not a real pilot (I'm a tank crewman) just wondering if that weight difference would be enough to have an effect.
No.not that much. Weight difference mainly affects climb and acceleration. I suspect that it serves as a psychological trick. Otherwise pilots are maybe to relaxed about their fuel state
bit of late here, but for anyone u should just try it out to get the feeling of what it does to best understand what kind of impact it gives to the turning/slow flying plane. kick it to improve the roll ratio, use it gently to give yourself a better turning angle, use it for aiming, use it on movements such as high yo-yo and hammerhead to best out your speed to altitude conversion and to keep your slow flying plane under control. but i really would recommend just to feel it out to learn it, rather than looking for tips and tricks which can really limit your view of the rudder. happy flights, good fights!
When? where? whom? I can't remember to get kicked or leave midflight recently. But I guess it should no problem for you to provide a link to that sortie. Tp prove such claims. Like on Wings: il2stat.aviaskins.com:8008/en/pilot/820/DerSheriff/ Or the finnish server: ts3.virtualpilots.fi:8000/en/pilot/3053/DerSheriff/?tour=19
I did two combat sorties there and completed all of them: ts3.virtualpilots.fi:8000/en/sortie/122607/?tour=19 The other one is not yet in apparently. And then you owe me an apology.
I shot three other aicraft down. and after beeing damaged by a Ju-88 I landed. How that is perceived as a combat log escapes me. And makes me really angry.
Hey ! I found this video very helpfull however i have a few questions. You mentionned Trim was important. Now i understand what it does but i don't understand how to use it/i don't know what to bind it to. Shame we can't squeeze the G2 fully potential, (does maps not change this? like flying it in kuban?) DB605 was a nice kick in on perfomance, making "late" G2 better than F4.
Hey man, I just bought IL2 and joysticks with Ir tracker. Any chance you can do a full tutorial? Because for me the game start is really hard. I’m used to War Thunders Realistic Battle fighting.
Ston3bridg3 Viking Best advice would be to keep flying, this is a flight sim and the veterans/aces will have many hundreds of hrs of flight time if not thousands. Each plane will have its own unique flight model/style, pick one and learn it well. Start with easy engine management, focusing on your flight skills first.
*Mistake: the F-4 had curve top in the armour back sit to save the pilot in case of fire behind the plane, here appears as a usual strait and sort back armour plate pilot sit. Well it's just a comentary to the ones who worked in this wonderful Bf109F-4 in the Game. A Madrileño who really loves Luftwaffe aircrafts. ;) All the best with the " corona.." wish you Luck!!!
I notice you have convergence set to 400 meters but like to shoot at 200 meters. Since all guns are effectively centerline, my guess is that convergence setting is not a big deal, but guns set to 400 meters would hit a bit high and the difference in velocity between the MGs and the cannon would make them hit different points. Significant? Probably not, by your results. When we get to the P-39 and it's 37 mm pumpkin chunker it starts to be a real issue.
I am in awe of the programming that goes into these flight sims. You are talking about the plane as if it were real, hardly needing to mention 'the game'
in other words he is explaining how good the software engine is.

The F series was the last pure fighter. The G series were up armed and armoured for destroying bombers. Or so said Adolph Galland or someone like him.
That seems to be true. I prefer the G as represented in Stalingrad. I prefer the engine settings and the artificial horizon.
"So landing the F4, in my opinion, is not really hard IF you avoid some major fuck ups" 😂😂😂😂 I see that you're also a man of culture. 10/10.

The 109 design allowes the plane to trim itself at a certain speed and alt. Usually at 380-400 km/h.
it is trimmed for that speed.

I use 400m convergence. To be able to pull off more difficult deflection shots. Since you can lead targets in turns a little easier.

Can the "shallow climb" described here be effectively used also in the G2? I mean at medium altitudes (2-5K)? I fear the yaks will catch me at this altitudes...Thanks for these excellent videos!
Jordi Graner sure this works for the g2 as well. But u climb a little worse. Keep your speed roughly at 400kph and u will be fine
Will try. Thanks again!
"I personally like to see what is trying to kill me" .....I agree when it comes to the backplate.
And It's the reason why I will not fly Desert Wings-Tobruk; there is no option to remove the backplate in any of the 109 F models.......and I can't see shit.
haha i love it how u say major fuckups so calmly

BoS comes with the F-4 and G-2 AND the Ju-87
@@SheriffsSimShack fantastic, thank you so much!

The complete overview
Trying to decide between this and the 190 A3 to learn the game
Thanks for your effort in this great video.
hello from spain.....I've been flying il2 for a year and it's hard for me to follow with the track-ir views....would you be kind and tell me all the curves of the axes of your T-ir profile...it would be helpful a lot of help for me. Thank you
Great Pilot Teacher.
Fascinating , very informative , thank you for posting.
Excellent tutorial! I hope to put it into practice soon enough
well done ! nice source of information
Well thank you! This video (and the whole 'how to' series) is incredibly helpful. *thumbs up
In case I identified your accent correctly: Super gut, werde ich sicher noch das eine oder andere Mal als Referenz nutzen. :)
Beste Grüße!
Just did the jump from playing 1946 and Warthunder, your videos are very helpfull, a lot of things are different
Thanks and again enjoyed your video.
isnt throttling up so fast on takeoff dangerous for the engine?
Il est tout simplement époustouflant!! il faut quand même un bon ordinateur pour en profiter....
Excellent tutorial.
Otherwise pilots are maybe to relaxed about their fuel state
Can you make a video on how to best use the rudder? That would help a lot for a sim newbie like me.
Sebonotik Insertnonamehere Good start would be to use rudder in Turns, later use it to increase rollrate
this please.
bit of late here, but for anyone u should just try it out to get the feeling of what it does to best understand what kind of impact it gives to the turning/slow flying plane.
kick it to improve the roll ratio, use it gently to give yourself a better turning angle, use it for aiming, use it on movements such as high yo-yo and hammerhead to best out your speed to altitude conversion and to keep your slow flying plane under control. but i really would recommend just to feel it out to learn it, rather than looking for tips and tricks which can really limit your view of the rudder.
happy flights, good fights!
I been playing il2 since 2002 mainly flying G2.
but i can even catch up to a hurricain in clod or bos.
What am i doing wrong?
Sheriff i saw you combat log in front of my friend, so much about your skills!
When? where? whom? I can't remember to get kicked or leave midflight recently. But I guess it should no problem for you to provide a link to that sortie. Tp prove such claims.
Like on Wings:
il2stat.aviaskins.com:8008/en/pilot/820/DerSheriff/
Or the finnish server:

Sheriff's Sim Shack on finnish two hour ago!
Sheriff's Sim Shack 109 dissapeared in front of my friend while ge was about to shoot, your name poped that you leave server.
Just saying what i saw!
I did two combat sorties there and completed all of them:
ts3.virtualpilots.fi:8000/en/sortie/122607/?tour=19
The other one is not yet in apparently. And then you owe me an apology.
I shot three other aicraft down. and after beeing damaged by a Ju-88 I landed. How that is perceived as a combat log escapes me.
And makes me really angry.
gracias por tu video tutorial, me sirve mucho ya que llego poco tiempo jugando il2 bos y es fantástico
Hey ! I found this video very helpfull however i have a few questions. You mentionned Trim was important. Now i understand what it does but i don't understand how to use it/i don't know what to bind it to. Also i have no clue how to Lead properly (Especially in turn fights, i haven't attempted to play multiplayer yet) so any extra tips are welcome. Thanks !
you can find the 109 trim in the settings as the stabelizer axis. and for leading:

This sim is sick and even sicker in vr...... just bought oculus and i think i will break up with my wife soon 💪💪💪... great video and very helpful
Well done review.
I wish technochat was in dcs. It helps me memorize my bindings while I’m in vr.
in game are both versions of g2 ? i mean later which have fixed the engine so it can run on 1.42 ata??
No we only have the derated g2. However we have the g4 which has full boost
Sheriff's Sim Shack thats sad i would like to have more planes in game
Are there any vids IL-2 Stormuvik game play like the first 2 minutes of this one? The music and recorded game play give me shivers! Would be so grateful if someone could direct me to a vid just of recorded gameplay like this.

I liked this vid , but what or how are you going to explain the disfigerent of the tail insignia ?
laws in russia and other countries.
Shame we can't squeeze the G2 fully potential, (does maps not change this? like flying it in kuban?) DB605 was a nice kick in on perfomance, making "late" G2 better than F4.
I'm a pleb without track-ir
Is that a mod or something to play multiplayer campaigns on public servers?
Great video on my fighter of choice!
HOW / what are you using to look around like that?
What about the duel needle instrument panel below the Fuel Gauge? Was ist das?
Fuel and oil pressure
@@SheriffsSimShack Thank you!
What was the music used in the intro?
Hey man, I just bought IL2 and joysticks with Ir tracker. Any chance you can do a full tutorial? Because for me the game start is really hard. I’m used to War Thunders Realistic Battle fighting.
Ston3bridg3 Viking Best advice would be to keep flying, this is a flight sim and the veterans/aces will have many hundreds of hrs of flight time if not thousands.
Each plane will have its own unique flight model/style, pick one and learn it well. Start with easy engine management, focusing on your flight skills first.
Outstanding video!!!!
Amazing tutorial. Big thanks.
any plans to do a vid covering how to fly these planes after the new physiology system?
*Mistake: the F-4 had curve top in the armour back sit to save the pilot in case of fire behind the plane, here appears as a usual strait and sort back armour plate pilot sit. Well it's just a comentary to the ones who worked in this wonderful Bf109F-4 in the Game. A Madrileño who really loves Luftwaffe aircrafts. ;) All the best with the " corona.." wish you Luck!!!
I removed that Plate. Not a mistake
Super coole Videos, danke!!
