Anime MMOs used to be the most common type of MMORPG released yearly. They were also simultaneously some of the most lucrative, most popular MMOs of the early to late 2000s.
Companies like IGG, GPotato, Aeria Games, Outspark that published games like Fiesta Online, FlyFF, Eden Eternal, Grand Fantasia, Holic Online, MapleStory, Dungeon Fighter Online, ROSE Online, Luna Online, Ragnarok Online, Florensia, Wonderland Online, Tales of Pirates.
You can tell I'm a mid 2000s MMO gamer as I played each and every single one of those.
But the Age of Anime MMOs has long since passed. The only Anime MMOs revealed in the last 5 years have been either horrible Mobile MMOs, cross-platform mobile-ish MMOs like Tower of Fantasy, Gran Saga and Noah's Heart, or Blue Protocol, which is realistically the only future the Anime genre has right now.
However, there have been several Anime titles that have somehow withstood the test of time, against all odds, remaining online and playable. Even despite their barren playerbase.
Aura Kingdom is one such game.
Aura Kingdom had the potential to be a really great quality game.... but it just ended up being very mediocre. Decent combat. Decent graphics. But absolutely nothing else going for it, which leaves you wondering what the point of even playing is.
There are better looking games. Better playing games. MMOs with good narratives. Larger, more open worlds. More players. There is absolutely nothing that makes Aura Kingdom worth playing in 2022 when compared to any other MMO.

If people want to play Aura Kingdom, they should try it out, the graphics are adorable and I believe it's still the most recent target based anime mmo. The class choice is vast too.

It's been more than a decade since I've touched this game. I can still remember my white-haired female greatsword user trying to get that eidolon Kotonoha. I was so close on getting her but then quit because the huge jump on exp requirement to level up. I was actually having a blast playing before I hit that wall.

grand fantasia, eden eternal and aura kingdom are staples of my childhood
Still playing this on an active private server whilst running into bunch of people. The visuals, especially the environments, are still among the best and cutest decades later. The combat perhaps the most satisfying and fluid of tab targeting kind.

Omg, thank you for including Wonderland Online! I've been looking for that game for ages! All I remember was that I played it around the same time as Zodiac Online, the game started on the beach and we could ride NPCs. Seeing the small image you showed instantly gave me a wave of nostalgia and I knew that was it.

As bad a game as Aura Kingdom is, I can't hate it, because it was my first introduction to anime MMOs and I'll cherish it at least that much.
Should've played it's predecessor, Eden Eternal. It was way better in every way.

Ahh aura kingdom…a game where you can spend 50.00$ on a dress and some Angel wings that look like they were designed by someone who just picked up 3D modeling as a hobby and found out how to use the particle system for the first time.
I am a Maplestory defector and I came to Aura Kingdom. I actually really like this game, it is quest focused, which to me is better than getting .0003% from a quest and having to use hours with of time to grind endlessly. I am in an active guild, and it isn't one of the more popular guilds in the American server like Cupcake. However, I have found this game to be incredibly fun, it is what Maplestory isn't and I can't tell you how much I appreciate that. Additionally, I don't lag anywhere but for some areas in Navea, the high population areas. I have gotten a lot of loyalty points and haven't spent a single dime.
- As long as there are players, the game will still alive.
- You had the ''hide players'' option activated that's why you didn't noticed any players.
- The mobs in open world got nerfed in order to make the leveling experience more faster.
- In dungeons, ''party mode'' difficulty can serve as a harder challenge to players who enjoy playing by themselves.
- You didn't experienced the level +45 experience in which you are able to use 2 classes.
- Based on the topic above, it get's even more interesting to do ''hell mode'' dungeons as a solo player once you unlock your secondary class.
Thats the problem with these videos about Aura Kingdom, its not the content creator fault, its just that so many things only become relevant in later stages of the game, so most players only get to see the surface and not the depth of the game.
i prefer the old character choosing screen. where the battle against reinhardt is going on and characters from each class is in that battle field scene. when we click on each class the camera view goes to the character. it's replaced with a typical class choosing screen now.

funny enough, i started replaying Aura Kingdom 3 days ago and actually forgot dispite its flaws, how oddly addicting it is lol just nice to have a dead brain game while watching a movie or smthing, even managed to get back my old account

the lag is because you are on Navea(HUB map) where all players chill out. there are people around you, but you can't see because player hide is on. btw most of the Aura Kingdom players are non-steam players they play game using standalone client. the stories and maps in higher levels are good.
and btw, about the solo dungeons, you need them to be solo cause they have cut scenes, they are story related and u cant do them "party"
for the party dungeons, they are harder and u will mostly need 2 players or more
you have to edit the last part ,
* you will mostly need 2 player or more,and 1 player gonna "LURE" (walking from the first gate to the last boss and running back to the first portal,so whole mobs on the dungeon gathered in one spot)
Ahh the memories. Played this from Closed Beta, with my guild that transitioned over from Grand Fantasia (another Aeria MMO that is 1000% p2w and is now dead). Discovered how to use the glide mechanic to OOB, Fun times
the only endgame worth mentioned is tower thingy with hard bosses in each floor. it's a scheduled raid event every few hours. two handed axe is the most powerful weapon in the game. it can fire bouncing projectile who will chase tons of mobs in dungeon runs. also you can one hit people with it in pvp. i suggest anyone to try private server. it's much easier to progress and their fashion content is awesome. you can ride flying dragon as big as building or buy flashy costume for being f2p player. the mass pvp or battlefield thingy is a joke because due to your high ping, everyone invisible till you have ten or more people straight in front of your face.
definitely one of my most favorite mmorpg back in the days. no gacha trash and other bullshit. people just spam guild raid to get crazy ammount of eidolon's essence

I play Aura Kingdom on German Server since 2014,
I say the Graphic is a bit outdated, but its still one of the best Among the Anime MMOs out today.
Since Gamigo took Over it went Downhill really fast, but with a bit backlash and dying numbers of players, it got better. They hold Boost weekends almost regularly. It does have some issues, but the devs are usually fast behind.
Now to the dreaded p2w aspect.
It's there, U cant buy ur Gear or anything like that there, but I believe u can buy Anima Crystals which give good buffs, elemental books which also give good buffs, as well as enhancing scrolls sometimes. Its not in the Shop 24/7. U can get Gold ingame via Farming, running dungeons, or u spend money for the Paragon Table, for which the currency can be bought in the item shop, or via Loyality points, although they are limtied per week.
The Eidolons are another issue. There are like 6 Instances where u can fight Eidolons to get their Key fragments, they are rare drops. And u can run specific Hell versions of normal instances.
Pets and Mounts: Buffs. U can get Pets and Buffs for cheap ingame sometime. But they give u buffs u need someday. So also p2w.
comrade-Contracts: p2w, they sometime give u 4% of extra damge through Shield, thats crazy.
Costumes: As u mentioned; different buffs which ultimately gives u an advantage.
Yeah, its sad to see. But its also possible to get all that stuff ingame... but only if u have time. It is really sad to see, i swear. I loved it back in 2014 when I was a teenage Girl.
I hope Blue Protocol saves us all.

I do remember play this Game I think Fiesta was my First Anime MMORPG.
I returned to playing the game Aura Kingdom Online after watching this video out of curiosity. After about 5 years of not playing, a lot has changed. My account was merged after the server merged into Olympus and there are only 4 channels. Some of my old characters (chimera server) need to be renamed because their names are the same as accounts on other servers before the merger. After playing, the players in the friend list are all offline for a long time.
My main character (server phoenix) has been kicked out of the guild for a long time and there aren't as many players hanging around the Navea location as before so it doesn't lag really. For the class, I didn't try everything so I don't know the significant changes, but I think the shinobi (ninja) class is still strong. The subclass is a crusader and is still strong but the damage seems to be decreasing, I don't know if I chose the wrong element or if the build was lacking.
Rockstar class must be unlocked first and must be level 90 so it can't be tried. If you change gender to lolita (little girl) you have to create a new character and choose the star cellar class so it's useless.
If you could switch any gender for free without creating a new character and choosing another main class, it would be more fun. The Whipmaster skill is pretty good, but I still prefer to choose the crusader for my subclass.
I'm pretty sure you can change how you look for free along with gender, I've done it a few times

i remember playing this as a kid but i stopped because all my cousins stopped playing it

I remember playing this when it first came out. There were no solo dungeons, and you had to party with people to progress through them; however, by the time I reached mid-game, somewhere around 40 - 60, it became painfully obvious that I would need to spend money to get even have an attempt to upgrade the Eidolons, even with the in-game system to get summon shards.
This was with Aeria Games at the helm. As we all know, they were a publisher who notoriously nickeled and dimed their players with low odds on gacha boxes. I'm honestly very surprised that this game is still online, even with the whales spending all their money on maximizing their stats. Additionally, you hit the nail on the head with costumes - having stats on costumes just makes the game pay-to-win, and it's gross; especially if there is a PVP scene, like AK had.
I will continue to hold on to my fond memories of playing this with my guildmates, and I will not return to playing this.

Ah..how I miss this game, alway do the tower until floor 90+ and yeah, necro class is OP to play love it when combo with soc class.
also for anime mmos with customization options... phantasy star online 2? you can make the char of your dreams practically, not only most customizable but you can use your accessory slots so freely, resize, rotate, reposition, etc you can do whatever you want.
Yea I love the customization. Wish sega can make the world feel slive like BDO and also have lots of content.
Meanwhile, Aura Kingdom wants you to spend $50.00 on a glittery dress and some fairy wings.
I remember back in 2021 the game still had a healthy player count, but it had a mass exodus for reasons I don't really know. New players quitting, I understand, but even the long time fans just gave up.

gamigo and x-legend had problems with each other, so no updates came and with no content people quit, and now the servers transfering to X-Legend.

Hey. Remember the game "Onigiri"? It's one of those anime MMO who had a large number of players before and now, barely anyone plays it. The game's enemies are Japanese demons and you play as an "Oni" where you can also get companions from humans and Onis to robots.

Anime mmos were almost never heard off back then actually, even for them just letting you know.
its very popular in southeast asia though. Anime games had always been popular here, they have a lot of fans.
Back then its pretty common for one anime mmo to have multiple version : Chinese version for people who speak mandarin etc, SEA version for SEA asians, Korean version, Japanese version, you name it. Oh, dont forget global version too.
nowadays im not sure, i dont think anime mmo are that popular anymore to have so much version of one game. but its definitely a thing before. Aura Kingdom have multiple version too.
Completely separate from other versions, with their own updates (the chinese one are alwaaaays far ahead of global one). I recall Global AK version players saying how unfair it is for Chinese AK players to have lot of cooler dance move and even a damned motorcycle and car mount.

@@saimyintmyat9373 Most of them? Only a handful of them. FFXIV is not an anime mmo, but it's the most popular and most well-made one till now. But man it's LONG, the free trial gives you 200 hours+ of gameplay.

I played Aura Kingdom a lot. I was max level on a private server and I can tell you that you barely covered 30% of the game. It's like your review is based on the tutorial. This is far from enough if you wanted to make an accurate and constructed review about this game.

The goal isn’t to cover the *entire game.* It’s impossible to cover every MMO fully each year. The purpose was to see how the game is in the current year. Not that there’s anyone to do content with to actually push late-game lmao.
Then what's the point in making reviews each year if all you do is covering what you already covered? The only reason why there are no players on Steam is because Aeria Games did an aweful job as publisher.
I played it and... dude the voice acting is pure entertainment. The character animations are so static.
back during early 2013 it was considered good still, i recall being blown away watching the npcs walking around, gesturing when they talk and able to 'fight' with monsters, albeit they deal little to no damage.
Comparing it to Genshin Impact, its pitiful, but the fact that it still have players 10 years later in competitive gaming industry prove that it was good enough for old players to stay.
plus Aura Kingdom are focused more on costumes, eidolons and socialising rather than playing. I recall spending money to buy costumes, the graphic is still good even now, by 2023's standard.
stiff, but good. I like Navea (the main city) the most. the mountain are a little goofy looking, but if you see the sunset in Navea while climbing the building along with the magical portal just hovering in the distant sky... Its very beautiful.

@@MMOByte its still alive and kicking? were gonna get a major patch on the upcoming days as Astrologer comes to AKTO servers. I am not having trouble joining raids and they are mostly full. Do note that 1 raid team max is 50 and I see 4 raid teams getting maxed out (Sky Tower opens in different times in a day so players join on when its convenient for them) multiple times a day! Probably the only downside is timezone since players are diverse but you wont have a hard time finding PTs anyways.
The private server is in much better conditions. Not only the content they are adding is ahead of what Aeria Games give on their server but it's also much less pay2win.
@@leyxstree LP is easy to get, and veterans are helpful! I just recently hit lvl 99 99.99% exp and been doing NTL runs daily for lp to fortify my gears. Hopefully, awakening wont be that hard for a lancer scrub like me!

That new change to the character selection is something I don't really appreciate personally. Old one was better for how it showed it.
The only good thing in Aura is costumes and skins (even can cosplay) - but all other: questing, dungeons, battle system, class system - are bad and boring. The game looks like a virtual chat with 3d avatars, and the gameplay is on the second places))
It is so funny to me that flyff the first p2w anime mmo endured the longest when all subsequent games tried to do the same thing and failed. Aura Kingdom was one of those games. It's so sad that the eastern devs and publishers murder their games with greed.

The funny part is, Aura kingdom Private server has more players than the steam one..
I played aura kingdom for years since this shity anime game is quite addictive for progressing into the end game, there's a lot to craft, or collect.. the best thing is probably on the endgame, since you got Tower Raid, with I remember 25 players with their own unique system on each floor.
the game has a great Soundtrack, it's so nostalgic and feels like a fantasy anime! I could say the cons are the tap target which sometimes sucks, and the dull camera movement, it's a huge turn-off, the dungeon keeps getting harder and for some point, you realize that you need an upgrade for this stuff since you can't progress the story if you don't skip these phase.. for someone who really played this game, I give it a good impression even though it's an old anime MMORPG

My issue with games with auto path is the obvious design against exploration. Is it even an RPG with auto play? A real mmo is usually vast, in depth, and encourages taking in the world. Auto patching is lazy, unimaginative, and takes away from what videogames are about, which is actually playing the game. Hate the idea of auto pathing, and really hate auto combat, but even worse is predatory micro transactions with pay to win models.
