- Thanks for watching - and please leave comments and feedback...I'm currently traveling, but you can be sure I will read every comment when I get back to civilization.
This is the studio drum recording of the song 'Yesterday', a song written by Benn Down. I punched up the drums a bit in this mix, so if you like the song, head over to Hurt Records and listen to the professionally mastered version there:

I really enjoyed being a part of this project. The song was created for Bethesda Softworks and their upcoming release of Fallout 4. I just think it's a wonderful song. I didn't want to get too flashy or complex with the drums, as the song has a strong foundation and has many elements that I didn't want to detract from (including a real string quartet). Still, I found a place for a polyrhythm, which I felt contributes to the suspenseful buildup into the chorus.
Anyway, I hope this video is of some interest, and I hope you appreciate the song as much as I do. Here is the breakdown of contributors:
Benn Down: Vocals, Guitars, Bass, Piano, Cello, Glockenspiel, Percussion, Synths
John Williams: Drums, Additional Percussion
Ellie Wyatt: Viola, Violin
William Cameron: Additional Synths
There is also a video specifically for Fallout 4:

Benn also made a behind the scenes video from his perspective, which I highly recommend:

This is so cool that you and benn produced this song. A music video made using this song was posted by another channel has over 100000 views. Great work as always.
Clint .Garrett Thanks man, and that's great that you've already heard the song!
such a perfect song
Such an amazing song! I love it!
I love how you did the black and white coloring to match the mood of the song. Very well done as always.
Great playing and great song. Well done John and congrats on the opportunity! I think your playing is very appropriate for the song. Most hired professionals would say the same thing. Great work all around!
AmrddH Thanks, and great feedback. I wanted to create something appropriate for the track, which would have sounded great by itself without hardly any drums. So I'm glad to hear that it fits.
Quality as usual johnkew Sounds fantastic. Can't wait for the game too!
I really like to see good people being recognized for their good work. I deserve even more. Congratulations, awesome drumming, awesome song.
Awesome drum track and as a fellow drummer it's hugely inspirational seeing you did a song for Fallout 4! Congrats mate :)
HOLY CRAP MAN YOU DID A SONG FOR FALLOUT? Man, if anyone ever deserved recognition its you. Good job, John. Youre amazing.
KilnerKlan Many thanks...Benn had all of the connections with Bethesda, and set up everything, so he deserves all the credit there.
Well good on Benn. You still played amazing, youre a talented bloke, i cant wait to see more; hope your family are well.
Very inspiring for me thank you.
Excellent session drummer
!!!!!!
Amazing video mate! Glad to see you do the whole song on video. Really inspiring!
***** So that's where you went... Sneaky!
Amazing cover dude!!
Keep it up! :)
congrats bro! way to go! :)
Awesome
Good stuff John!
Will Bloodfarm Thanks Will - good to hear from you!
This song is awesome! Really love how the song increases the intensity gradually, I don't really know how to say in English but I'm sure you get the idea! Also really love the sound of your drums on this one! I'm adding this video on my top 5 of my favorites from you! Have a good trip wherever you are, greetings from France ;)
Anthony Verdier Hey Anthony, I'm glad to hear you like this one. I knew it was a cool song when Benn sent me the scratch tracks on guitar and synth. Then I recorded the drums and sent them back, and when I heard the next draft (with real strings, vocals, etc), I was blown away. It really transformed into something new.
Damn, this was 4 years ago?
johnkew Oh My God! This song is such a grower!
The first time I heard it, it felt like a decent song. Nice chord chord progression, great subtle drums. But thats's it.
And after few repeated listens..... It has grown on me, like a cancer! I can easily rate it high among the A Perfect Circle. It has become my workout motivator!
I really liked your minimalistic approach. Also, that poly was a bonus.
Congratulations! Keep up the good work, man!
That's really great feedback to hear, thanks!
+johnkew this i kind of an odd question, but do you remember where you got your t-shirt from? Its just really cool.......
Thanks
+Callum McHugh I got this t-shirt at BC Surf and Sport. I can't remember the brand.
johnkew Thanks for replying. I think i have found it somewhere on the internet by a company called "Rook" but its hard to buy them in England.
Attention to detail
War. War never changes.
Always absolutely amazed at every cover you do, every video you post sir. Now I'll hear you on Fallout 4?? The Geiger ticking at the beginning was just superb to mix in. Are you still teaching Archaeology or focusing on the music now?
Just discovered this track yesterday, love the production value and rhythmic beat of the song! Any possibility we'll see this along with future titles on iTunes/Apple Music?
+joshnc101 Thanks man, and yes, we are working on a full album right now.
Hello John, do you do lessons? Really love you playing, your feel and dynamics are really inspiring, Nathan
Nice cover:) what is that pan thing that the GoPro above the rack toms is mounted on called? Makes the shots look so much more professional
dmtben That's a motorized tripod mount that I got at a security camera store. That was a wonderful discovery.
Hey John, are you adding something to the drums or are you just trying to copy the original? I don't notice anything special (like crazy drum fills, stick tricks, techno covers, double speed etc), but you are still my favorite "youtube drummer". Maybe it's just your excellent playing, awesome sound/video quality and great choice of music. But there seems to be something more, something special that makes me always get excited when seeing one of your new videos. Well played!
PS. I have never heard the original of this particular song.
CellarPhantom i think the key, is he performed the original, he was hired by bethesda/benn down to be the drummer

BetaBreaking Ah yes, ofc I didn't click "Read more" ^-^ Thanks..
What kind of snare is that? I really like how it sounds. Great video!
I'm pretty sure he has the Chrome over Steel 8x14 DW performance series snare. I noticed that's what he had in another video because I have the same one. It's magnificent and only $330
StevesSwift You are correct sir.
War war changes
I got a cover i like to see ever thought blink 182 the dude ranch album song waggy but the hole album is sick
