I've been wanting to try a dubstep song for a while now on the drums, but I couldn't find one that hasn't already been played to death by other UA-cam drummers. I've also been wanting to play an Ellie Goulding song, but the same thing. So I started playing around with remixing her cover of Hanging On and came up with a dubstep version that I'm real happy with. I downloaded some dubstep samples and created some of my own, and arranged the breakdown section according to what I would enjoy accompanying with my acoustic drums. All in all it was a very fun experience. I don't consider myself a DJ, or even someone who is really into dubstep, but I can see the appeal after spending this time on the remix.
Then it was an issue of writing acoustic drum parts for the remix. I'm really happy with the end result. It's completely different from Ellie's original cover of the song. There are hardly any drums on the original. So I added - hopefully tastefully - parts to the slower, more dream pop sections. Here I got to experiment with some linear/fusion/gospel patterns that I've been working on. On the second chorus I tried to bring up the intensity with a Danny Carey-esque polyrhythm. And overall I tried to use the acoustic drums and some bass dubstep bass hits and growls that I looped to bring up the intensity before the big dubstep drop. The original song peaked at the last chorus which was still very much a downtempo dream pop, so I didn't want the heavy dubstep to sound out of place. Hopefully I was successful.

as a guitar player of ten years your videos inspire me to buy my own drums and play. Phenomenal job.
Thanks Eric, and I'm glad you noticed the mixing! This is the first song I actually mastered, in the sense that I mixed the drums and then worked on a master track with the music to bring everything together. Lots of subtle changes, but together they make for a better overall mix.
absolutely most underrated/most view deserving drummer on youtube hands down
Thanks man, I really appreciate that compliment about the playing, and the mixing.
This is a guy I wish would get more recognition, dudes really good so someone give this man some sponsorship already!!!
Man I couldn't help but smile throughout this video. I'm a drummer also and I love it when I can see the emotions come out of someone into their drumming. Excellent bro!
I didn't know Tony Hawk could play drums! lol Awesome cover!
I stumbled across these videos whilst playing Beastie Boys tracks reliving a misspent youth! I've subscribed immediately. I'm not a musician, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching this particular video so much I've now viewed it 5 times. It's so full and rich in sounds and is a pleasure to watch.
Absolutely amazing. Congrats on your new babe... just getting my 7yr old boy into drumming and i keep showing him your videos to inspire him to hang in there... you have a gift and are a truly talented musician. Thanks for the videos.
Incredible... that opening groove... Daaaammmmmnnnnn! Those fills! everything was brilliant. Brilliant writing. I love this...
The cymbal work on this song is fantastic and the fills are just unbelievable. Hadn't heard this song by her yet and I will go buy it now. I also like the front camera that has the GoPro on top and slowly rotates. Outstanding drumming, once again!
This John Kew guy sure knows how to find good songs to drum to
You can switch between Tool, to Between the Buried and Me, to Blink 182, to electronic music and be perfect.
You're great, as always.
John... BROTHER! a WHOLE NEW LEVEL!!!!!!!!! officially rendered speechless...
Fantastic once again! You have great talent! Thank for you vids! My 5 month old daughter is a huge fan; soon as she gets cranky, you're settling her down!
So much variety !!! Got chills when you mixed it up so effortlessly. Thanks
Just Brilliant! that is what this is! What an awesome job!
That's awesome to hear, thanks! My 3 year old son told me to turn it down when I was mixing the other day because he was watching his cartoons.
This is absolutely amazing!
Dude this cover is simply amazing . Awesome job dude as always and the mixing is a work of art it sounds so natural. Again amazing awesome job dude

Dude.. I LOVE Ellie Goulding.. Fricken AWESOME man!
amazing remix. im not a dubstep person but i just have to watch all of your videos. this was brilliant. 3:36 gave me goose bumps
This song holds a special meaning for me. Adding drums to an already incredible song just adds even more emotion and meaning to it in ways that's hard to describe. Amazing. Just amazing :)
That's great feedback, because the real test is if the added drums sound good to someone who loves the original song. Thanks.
Well, in this case, it did :)
Hope to see more!
ellie goulding + dubstep + drum =
Thanks so much Carm! I did spend a lot of time on those grooves and fills, so I'm glad you noticed them. Cheers!
Always wonderful watching your videos no matter what genre they may be your fantastic!

Brother, love seeing your videos. I share your vids everywhere I can. Me and my friend love your style. Keep up the awesome drumming!
i like the fast part of the dubstep and ur snares! feels like bullets coming out from my earphones!!! good job man!
Stick Flips = Winning. Very creative fills sir. You never fail to impress me. And best wishes on a speedy recovery.
Thanks for this feedback Jose - I spent a lot of time mastering this track so hopefully it sounds good on your ipod.
Thanks for sharing, and for your kind words!
Awesome drumming. Cool to see some drums that you basically wrote. Really creative stuff.
GREAT! LOVE IT! greetings from Monterrey, México! =)
holy crap!... that poly rhythm! so sick bru. you just made me buy this song...
Wow that was so awesome dude.
Hi there my friend - GREAT to hear from you again! Hope you're doing well.
This is fantastic. So well done. :)
Many a tasty licks in this video! Headed to the wood shed to figure a couple out now. Well played sir! Well played!
Awesome stick work, man! Great cover! Keep it up!
Good to hear from you Will, and I'm glad to know you're still on the path to recording on that kick ass set you have. I'm loving that 18" evo crash!
Awesome! I really don't like the song, but you are amazing! So spectacular! Thank you again for sharing your passion with us!
This is great man!!!
Great job! And the stick tricks were a nice touch!
so good maba! watched this so much
Yeah, still jamming it. I love the way you constructed the parts and then felt them to perfection. :-)
That second chorus was the most unexpected thing I've ever experienced haha
Wow. Great job.
I am still digging this. Watching your twirls and tosses is a treat.
WOWWW!!! a good return!!
This is spectacular! An interesting perfomance! energic drumming, with tricks!
WOWWWW *w*
I'm a complex individual :) But seriously, my goal here was to step outside of my comfort zone. I had never tried drumming to dubstep, much less composing it. So it was a fun experience.
This was my introduction to dub step. This is as far as I got. 😊
Subscribed! Composition of the song.. IMPRESSIVE....
For me, when I'm learning the stick tosses, I'll screw up pretty regularly, but then they just become a part of the playing, so there are hardly any mess ups after a while. It's a lot like learning a fill. You won't nail it the first few times, but once you get that muscle memory, it will come naturally almost every time.
Many thanks Will - I'm so glad you 'get' it. As musicians we seek creative outlets everywhere, and having access to a program like Logic, Cubase, etc. presents an opportunity to do stuff that could have only been done in a million dollar studio by the experts a couple of decades ago. But now that I've scratched that itch I can say that it's way too much work for me in a genre that I'm not passionate enough about to keep doing it. A fun experiment though.
i hope to see you live some day man, in a big stadium concert!! amazing playing...
Thanks so much James, much appreciated!
Glad you liked it!
Amazing.
Just incredible! How do you not have 1 million Subscribers yet :D
Everytime i hear this makes me wonder.... can anything sound any better than this
Awesome mix =)
That's so badass man... i think if the extra beat from the song itself at 2:47 wasn't there it would have been perfect man! your drumming was awesome no doubt though!! Keep up the good work my friend!
smashed that!!
Likewise, my friend... I have been away from youtube for a while, I haven't made any new songs in a while.. I also have been away from making the Native American style flutes and have been focusing on woodturning on my wood lathe... I've been making wooden oil lamps and wooden electric lamps. Things have improved with my PTSD but I am still waiting on the Dept of Veterans Affairs to do the right thing, which isn't uncommon these days. The new studio is looking awesome...
Sounding sick brother. Long time no base touching.... awesome to see you're still going hard and recording some awesome tunes... Im still saving for my microphones... seems a way off still, but I keep at the kit daily for at least 90 mins, and it seems to be paying off. Nice dub-step cover BTW - and your cymbal collection sounds amazing. Loving the 18" dual crash attack. Hope everything's going well on your side of the world. I'm keeping the south in check :)
Dude, you are a really good drummer!! I watched your AAL another year cover and it blowed up my mind and instantly subscribed hahah :D
BTW How do you record your kit?? I like to do covers too but Im such a newbie with all this recording stuff :( I just wanna know how you make them sound so tasty!
Again, keep on doing an amazing job :)!
Thanks my friend, glad you liked it!
Thanks Michael! Ha, I never really understood how dubstep was so different from other tech music either. Still don't really - other than it uses a half-time beat over the breakdown and has all the bass growls. This was fun for a change though.
Muito show,otimo!
Thanks Brandon!
The double stick flip at 1:26 was way cool!
Sweet cover,
Thanks for this feedback my friend!
Many thanks my friend - I love being a drumming 'hobbyist' so that I can be schizophrenic and jump around to all of these genres. It's kind of like cuisine - I love good Italian food, but it's also nice to have French, Indian, Middle Eastern, South American, etc.
Thanks Kathy!
Back again, smiling thru it's entirety, proud to just watch, yet wishing for a day I was John Kew....Curious J, have you ever been approached by any of the bands or members you cover?
Thanks Boda - hmm, let me think...it has happened twice. Recently, Baard Kolstad of Leprous graciously complimented me about the video I made for their song The Price. And a few years ago, Thomas Pridgen commented on his Facebook page how much he DIDN"T like my version of Wax Simulacra, haha. No offense taken - my version was metal-influenced and was nothing like his gospel-chops masterpiece.
Thanks man, much appreciated!
how can u love tool and this at the same time hahah.but ure skills are sick!
Wooooowwww amazing*-*
looks like y'all have settled into the new house and are doing well. I'm truly glad to see it! You know, now you NEEEED to do the Benny Benassi's "Cinema" skrillex remix.... That'd be a GREAT, fast paced cover! Go ahead and prepare the tigggers! hahaha. I hope things are going well in the world of archaeology. Do you have an interest in a specific period for research? Are you doing a post doc? or did you say you were an assistant prof? Here's hopin' you get some good students if you're a prof...
Thanks man!
Hi! You are brilliant!!! I really like your covers, expecially tool ones, and i wanted to ask you: how many years did you take lessons? Do you have a band? Where do you teach?
:)
you're amazing, just subscribed :)
Thanks dude!
This one is now competing with Tool's 46 & 2 as my favorite of your videos. It also serves as my introduction to dubstep. I still don't know what the hell that is. I do know that you played the shit out of this one. Very well constructed and great sound, bravo!!! I enjoyed your twirling too. :-)
What a hipster...Now a broken hipster LOL. Nice work man. I've always enjoyed drummers electronic additions, simply because just jamming along is never enough to entertain - it takes some clever fills combined with the discipline of subtlety to bring such a cover to life. Cool ideas. Jope youre back on your feet soon man.
*goosebumps*
Thank you!
wow, perfect :)
Excellent cover, much better than the original.
Lol i see the 3 on 4 on hh keeping the rest in 4/4 eulogy style got stuck deep in your head too huh? Awesome job all over! The groove right after the polirythm was really clever too and gotta say you aint no dj but the song itself is rather enjoyable as well. You should play around more with stuff like this. You may come up with a real treat for us :)
WOW! Holy shit man! I never knew this song existed until now, Hawaii so far away... EXCELLENT WORK J! Now I went to hear her version and their recording seems to hide the drum work, hard to hear him, but you pull it out and over the top, are you copying the song? or are you adding some Kew in there?
I like it, no I love it!
Boda - KFH
ill hit replay i think :)
