Deftones - Gore // Johnkew Drum Cover

- This is the title track from the Deftones new album. They never disappoint; I listened to this album front to back right after buying it, and enjoyed every minute. I love the flow of the album, and Gore stood out to me as being very interesting on the drums. Abe always writes amazing drum parts; he isn’t flashy as many other talented drummers are, and is happy sitting back subtly supporting the songs, but occasionally you hear him go off on some crazy tangent. The hi-hat/snare groove that opens this song is one of those tangents.
This groove is difficult for two reasons: (1) it’s really fast and technical, and (2) it’s a similar pattern to an iconic Neil Peart groove (articulated differently on the ride and snare; e.g. Spirit of Radio). I had learned that Neil Peart groove during my formative youth, and I had a hard time 'unlearning' the pattern. So my hands kept trying to switch back to that old muscle memory. It's a very cool groove to play once it's locked in.
And the choruses and ending of this song just bang. A ton of fun to play. I’m scared to look closely at my cymbals for cracks after that finale.
Thanks for watching, and if you feel so inclined please leave feedback and share.

My poor cymbals really took a beating on this one.
+johnkew What overheads are you using in this?
+Gideon Ward Those are Audix Fusion series mics overhead.
johnkew Cheers, great video!
They really did lol. It's such a pleasure watching you play. From how your drums sound (do you tune for each individual song? It sounds like your tuning matches Danny Carey's tuning when you cover tool) to your seemingly effortless fluid drum style. Every time I watch a video of yours I'm reminded of the feeling of playing the drums. It's such a great feeling. I hope people who have never taken the chance to play can derive the same feelings. Cheers buddy
+Lance LeFevre Thanks man! Yeah, I'm constantly tuning my drums, so they're unique for each song. I got the 10" tom a little too high for this one, but it definitely stands out. And you're right about that great feeling you get when playing the drums. There's just something about it.
When I hear people talk about deftones it’s rarely about Abe. Such an underrated drummer, and such a beast. Same sentiments to you, great cover.
Please make Deftones - What happened to you . very nice drumming part on that track
My biggest gripe with the studio recording of this track is how subdued the drums are, when in fact it's among some of Cunningham's best work. Your cover beautifully accentuates a great piece of Deftones musicianship. Killer work as always!!
Yeah I agree that the audio engineer should have definitely boosted Abe's drums, particularly on that paradiddle groove.
Gojira- The Art of Dying. Monstrous song. Give it a listen.
Abe is the man and you did him justice sir :)
Abe is my favorite drummer. Thank you for bringing out the genius of his drum parts!
KILLER. love this song & album and you smashed it up!
Always nice to see you play some Deftones! Abe never disappoints.
man this is awesome, one of the best drum covers i’ve seen in my life.
Awesome man! That verse groove is tastyyyy
Fantastic job as usual! Deftones are great!
Yes! My favorite song from the album. Killer intro!

I've seen so many of your Tool ones and just found these Deftones ones! Nice work!
Abe is easily my biggest drumming influence, and you sir accomplished to put the biggest grin on my face. Thank you
So clean

This is insane! Made me want to go down and jam until morning!
I see you have fun with it !!! AWESOME
Awesome! I was wondering who was going to cover this. Nailed it!
flawless!
New sub from a Deftones fan - awesome work!
Excellent work. I'm not a drummer (guitar player), but I love watching your videos. Keep em coming.

Awesome! Gonna have to listen me to some deftones
Awesome playing John! Unbelievable power and accuracy!
+Matt Flacche Thanks Matt, I think there was a bit of pent up emotion that came out in this one!
You're amazing my friend, flawless. Subscribed. Love from India. And yes, I'm a big time Deftones fan. thank you so much.
Brilliant !
Perfect
John's been hitting the weights!
Perfection
I miss your drum covers dude. I come to this channel at least once a month hoping to see a new release 😢
Dude that was awesome!! You should do Rubicon next. Its an amazing song
I Love the Deftones. Every song.
Man, you rocks as hell.
awesome job
great job as always, John. The thing that gets me about this song is the prolonged slow down of the cymbal crashes. I know I can just count it out, but trying to just feel it out is tough
I had to put a click in the song counting down to each crash at the end, or I would have been totally lost. That's one of those things they had to do in the studio, watching Abe before each crash.
JOHN. Saw new video then saw it was deftones. Yes. Just Yes.
Very, very, very, very good!
That was excellent! I always struggle with the timing at the end lol Don't know how you do it perfectly!
Great job!! Keep it up, can't wait for more Portraits stuff.
+podwaydoors I'm glad to hear some love for Portraits!
The bass drum pattern is so sick. You rock man, but, you already know that! Cheers. Phantom bride next perhaps.
Love the left hand tech John. Very Abe Cunningham like of you!
+Johnkew Your drumming blends perfectly with the song. Sounds like you hit every note without a hitch. Tight and heavy. I look forward to more videos/playlists.
P.S. My fav's are the TOOL covers. Killer!!
Surprise you're now part of the gang! BRAVO DUDE
good lord abe is good.........i mean john. great job.damn
Excellent gore cover. Loved it. I have a song cover request. Could you do the Deftones Eros song "Dallas?" There is an extended and EQ'd version on UA-cam now if you search the song. I'd love to see you do that song. And I like how you post one video with the backing track and another without it. It's helpful to hear it by itself. Thanks!
That was amazing and to the tee drums cover! Bro, please try make a cover of Phantom Bride.
Good job on the timing
It would be awesome to hear you try an Opeth song from the albums Pale Communion or Heritage!
Sick brah! \m/
🔥🔥🔥
Deftones is life
Muito bom!!!! Parabéns! =)
very nice cover my friend
10/10
Cool.
fucken NAILED it dude!!!
The ending of this song always reminds me of the ending of the song "Rosemary Had An Accident..." by TDWP.
Hey John, the Coma Machine by BTBAM has been my favourite song lately, and the drums really caught my attention. I would absolutely love it if you did a cover of it!!
Yay!!
Super!
Great cover! You should cover some Caligula's Horse.
you have the skill to play with any ...and I mean ANY major headline music group.
Don't forget to keep developing your own personal style and creativity
Nice man ! Are these cymbals that you play are nice sounding ,
Absolutely nailed it! I've yet to spend time on this groove/song but when I have broken it down it's a bitch to play! I'd say this is one of Abe's best songs to date. Just so brutal yet technical all at the same time.
Specially love the drum fill at 2.52. Which again, you nailed!
Do Knife Party please!
goodjob bud. tighten up
Is Abe a jazz drummer or is that just something my friend told me cause of his kit. My friend I think is a great drummer who needs opportunity. He thinks Abe was jazz trained. I don't know anything about anything to be honest I just love Deftones.
I know skill is always interesting to watch but sometimes I just want that rocking raw energy. Even if the beat is simple. Basically I'm asking if you could do Staind A Flat? Lol
chingon
Now is time to cover hearts/wires xD
phantom bride cover would be dope as fuck
How long did it take you to learn the snare?
Hey John, another awesome performance. I've recently discovered a band I think you'd take interest in. Theyre called "12 foot ninja". very weird but talented band. just a suggestion. Keep on rocking man.
What’s the ride cymbal?
Gojira - Oroborus, this song has great guiatar parts.
John looks yoked! been lifting?
John, always perfect.. but can I get an omg for Chinos screaming in this song
The only thing you're bad at, is at making bad covers hahaha
Keep it up John, I can't wait for the Portraits album.
+Alan Kramer Thanks man, and I'm excited for all the love for Portraits!
If all the album has the excellent quality that From 4.28 and Axis Mundi had, Portraits will become with no problem one of my favorite bands. Cheers from Mexico!
Sorry mate but this doesn't sound like Rosetta Stoned by Tool, you must have done something wrong ... :D still waiting on that one ..
but a great cover anyway
Is that you Abe?? Haha oh my bad, it's some guy playing it better than Abe
