- Abe Cunningham is one of those drummers that I gain more and more respect for as I learn his songs. He really has a gift for supporting the mood of the song with his dynamic drumming, and for putting a lot of thought into the writing and composition of each song. The hi-hat grooves in the first two verses of this song are brilliant, and really show how Abe is able to think outside of the box with his drumming.
This is an intimidating song to play along with over the original music, because on the surface it seems like Abe is just improvising the whole song. It seems like there are no patterns in terms of grooves or accents. So learning to play it exactly as it is on the album takes a lot of work. And improvising your own parts sounds sloppy over the top of this song because the original drums are so prominent in the mix. Nothing stays constant for long, and there are very few patterns that repeat themselves. But now that I've really dissected the song, I seriously believe that it wasn't improvised - that he wrote the drums this way. There are patterns to the groove, but they are very atypical and it fits the overall feel. Like many songs by the Deftones, there is a feeling of apprehension in Passenger. By not falling into predictable patterns, Abe's drumming adds to the overall suspense and keeps the listener on the edge of their seat.
Anyway, there is nowhere to hide on this song. if you don't play exactly what's on the recording, it sounds real sloppy on top of the recording (e.g., switching the measures in the verse where he doesn't open the hi-hat for those where he does). Unless the song volume is so low that you can barely hear it, you're going to hear any differences between the external drums and Abe's and it will sound clumsy.
So to me what makes this this song compelling isn't necessarily in the complexity or difficulty of the drumming, but the structure, dynamics, and overall feel of it. I decided to learn the odd patterns and keep it true to the original. Just to be clear, I'm not playing it exactly the same - I took some liberties and changed a few things - but I kept it within a tight framework of the original composition. I did add a couple of small things here and there just to accentuate and expand some of the original drum parts that really stood out to me. It took a lot more concentration that I expected to play this song true to the original arrangement. There's no resting in the verses or choruses, falling into a predictable pattern. You are constantly thinking about the odd changes two or three measures away. That's why I have the thousand yard stare in most of the video.
So I hope you enjoy watching this as much as I enjoyed playing it. I'm very happy with how this mix turned out, so turn it up! Use headphones if you have them-it'll help capture the mood :)

It’s like... you get this song if you’ve ever just been in the car, alone at night on a road with no traffic. The windows are down, filling your lungs with the perfect level of cool air. You’re not warm, you’re not cold; you’re perfect. You’re sitting in the driver’s seat in the best way possible. Comfort level is a 10. No worries, no cares, no problems. For that brief time - everything is good. Great cover man!
That's a good word for his drumming - ferocious. I haven't seen them live, but on live videos he really goes off behind the kit.
You are a human drum machine. In a good way, y'know, with style.
Bravo! It's not everyday you see cover players nailing the originality, especially with some of the technical players you cover. Again... Bravo!
you should be in a band selling albums and making the big bucks. don't be afraid to start laying down your own beats...you have all the fundamentals...you can be the next John bonham or jimmy sullivan or fill on the blank if you would be willing to take the next step and let it all hang out
This is really good, but my favorite cover by him is right in two by tool
Perfect cover, great transitions. I love you're snare sound on this one, love the harmonics and the reverb.
Abe Cunningham is also one one my favourite drummers, his groove is amazing such as the way he compose his parts.
Sick dude, Deftones is one of my favorite bands, along with KoRn. Keep em coming! My mics are in the mail, cant wait to start making some covers!
Always a pleasure to watch you playing.
Hey man, with all these covers of awesome bands like Deftones, Tool, Queens Of The Stone Age, Mastodon and System Of A Down, I'd just like to point out that you have awesome taste in music!
As usual very nice job sir. Best drum cover of passenger so far.
Incredibly well done. You really upheld the latter half's consistently off-kilter feeling of unease.
I love the dynamics you use on the cymbals! So powerful
wow this is one of the best cover i have seen!! Great job bro!! much respect!!!
Again, incredible job. You're amazing! Mmmmm I love me some old Deftones and anything Tool. You have so much talent and it's very enjoyable to watch you play.
Abe would be proud!!!
Such a deceivingly hard song to play, I've had the pleasure to see these guys in concert several times. Always a blast. Great job with this bro, you're insanely talented.
Absolutely gorgeous. And threw in som juggling as well, nice one.
So fucking awesome man. This beat is raw and funky as hell on the hats. I somehow feel that Abe doesn't get the props he deserves. Like u say in the description he's always thinking outside the box and keeps it interesting. Great cover man I love watching all your stuff, u are an amazing drummer
Amazing job!Love Deftones and love this song.
Just what I needed. My favorite Deftones song!
I love this song! And you just did a badass cover of it. Great job!
What a great song from deftones. Keep on drumming man!!!
Absolute talent.
Excellent cover! You're spot on with the description of Abe's drumming.
Superb! Great description too. Great detail.
Perfect John! Great song pick with a really nice intense and melodic groove.
That was awesome. Digital bath would be pretty cool too.
Damn it! So damn good!! Love it man! Lots of Deft9nes soul in it...so tigh excellent work buddy
In my humble opinion you did an absolutely amazing job here....Incredible Job. Just Incredible.
Amazing. One of my favourite songs from back in ze day.
Nice Song!! It is nice to remember some part of my childhood... nice work, like always man
Very cool man, I'm excited for you! Recording is SO much fun.
Thanks for noticing that fill, and the stick tricks! I think I've heard Danny Carey expand a triplet fill like that, incorporating cymbals on notes you wouldn't expect. So that's where I was influenced.
Hell of an influence haha! You’re up there in my mind, as of the greats lol. Leave it to me to comment on a ten year old video
And now I see you've covered a track by my favourite drummer, Abe Cunningham!
Well done champ, it's an intimidating song to tackle. Not exactly overly technical but you got to be tight and competent within your own playing. Like you wrote, it follows no set routine so you can't just jam over it.
Unreal talent thanks for sharing
"Johnkew" 's videos are by far the best I've come across for learning purposes. I'm a stickler for getting the correct notation and this song is proving to be a real task! Gives me something to keep working towards though :)
great cover as always!!
Awesome cover(s) man!
Thanks again for this great feedback Matt. You know, I haven't seen much of Abe's kit, and I've never seen them live. But I have spent a lot of time listening to their great music. I'll have to track down that video tour of his kit.
freaking awesome guy ! much respect ! ;)
This is brilliant dude
great song, nice performaed and played! kepp up the good fun way to play!
This is right on!!! I so love the Deftones!!! Especially the progressive drumming!!! I think I might have found the band to talk to you about!! Great Video!
That's great to hear, thanks!
Sounds perfect.
nice cover man, love it!
Great cover, respect!
Thanks man, Maynard's voice was an excellent addition to this song for sure.
Brilliant!!!
magic...Mr. Johnkew
Nice job! I am a huge fan of Deftones and also a really big fan of Abe Cunningham's drumming. You did a great job.
I really liked your personalized fill that you added in around 3:53, too, that was really cool.
Oh yeah, and sweet drum sticks moves! Lol you look like the Rev out there!
Awesome cover!!
this is awesome!
interesting hi hat set up. reversing one. ima try it!! nice job by the way. never seen that before.
Amazing drum cover, is perfect!
Greetings John from Chile!
We must have similar taste cause you seem to cover all my favourites. You deserve way more subs and views for these!
I didn't realize how complex the drumming was in this song until I read your description.
Awesome cover man! Can't believe this has so few views! nice one mate. :)
I worked at 2 music stores so I'm a gear nut. I have a Pearl export 5 piece with a full set of zildjian ZHT. Great throne and a bad ass pedal. I play A LOT but just haven't got the band groove going. I have always been a very straight forward drummer with my own style and personality. I will certainly keep up with you. Also I have seen quite a bit of covers of this and everyone plays it similar BUT different. Even Abe plays it different now live. I will cover it but will stress out less about it
Nice cover one of my favorite Deftones song's Maynard's voice is chilling.
holy shit that was flawless
very cool!!
playing this song on drums must be a great feeling !
Abe is so groovy man.
I think I just came on myself. Damn that was good!!! Wow.
Vania Jenkins need help cleaning that up or nah
Good god that is the most gorgeous ride I have ever seen in my life. Please share what model it is.
Couldnt be played any better. Really amazing. I play the drums so I know how much skill that takes. Maybe a coincidence or maybe not but your kit setup is almost identical to Abe's. There's a video on youtube of him showing us around his kit and its pretty much your kit.. Again mad props bro that was awesome. Watched it 5 times in a row and amazes every time. Keep it up..
You have amazing control
Your style is awesome. Spain!
Badass!
3:52 that fill OMG
Thanks dude!
Thanks man, much appreciated.
Excellent
Incrível!
Yeah I've made an attempt to play this song before, and as you mentioned, the rhythms are so sporadic that it just sounds weird if you miss a snare hit or something. But as for the song itself, I feel like Maynard's voice is the key factor in the overall mood of the song. I can't really imagine Chino's voice on this one, but I feel like Maynard was the best fit. I love this song, and you did it great justice! Haha
You should listen to the Contortionist - Language album. They sound like Tool but in a progressive metal style. Please!! Some amazing beats and drumming skill there by Joey Baca
Tool isn't metal in general. It's prog rock.
@@jalmarivartola2286 tool is definitely prog metal
@@jalmarivartola2286 thats what i said. Like tool but in progressive metal.
Awesome awesome
Hey, thanks Allen. Your situation sounds similar to mine - I didn't have a kit to play for 10 years while I was in college. For the stick tricks, I've just been watching different videos of newer folks like JP Bouvet (he talked about the few stick tricks he used in a video dissecting his solo on his UA-cam channel), and of course Luke Holland.
Hardass!
Thanks Will, much appreciated my friend. I do love the sound of the Paragon Ride too. When you hammer the bell on that thing, it's probably the loudest cymbal I have. 15 pounds of dense bronze alloy, ha. Not sure what you mean with the Mars, Rush, and Mastodon comment?
Glad you like it, and thanks for the feedback!
Sick as always brother. Nice groove. I recall you said my uploads are of a band you know nothing of... I wonder if you know your uploads of Mars, Rush, and Mastodon (at the time) were unknown to me? :) Love that ride-such a solid round warm ping. Novo love noted from 3:06. Good cymbal. If you break another Crash or China, consider the Ozone :) It does both. Im the Ozone pusher. Makes sense, NZ has no ozone layer... so I got my own :) Great work as always man. That hat work looked difficult.
Thanks for your feedback my friend.
Hi Fabio - unfortunately I have no control over which videos they allow for mobile viewing. Like you said, a lot of the videos I've been putting up lately are blocked on mobile devices. My understanding is that it relates to the copyrighted material, so if the music owner (i.e., record label) decides to block it, UA-cam blocks it. Hopefully it will soon change since they're now showing ads on mobile devices too.
very nice job =D
I'm using Paiste 14 inch heavy 2000 series hi hats. They are 20 years old, and as far as I know they're not made any more. But they are a precursor to the Rude series.
In terms of what to buy next for you, that's a tough question. But I would stick with a single pedal for a while. If you start using a double bass too early, it can become a crutch. The snare is one of the most important elements, so you may want to consider upgrading that before anything else. Or another crash, or china.
abe cunningham = style
🤘🤘😍😍
Hey John, awesome cover. Any chance of posting a drums only for this? Would love to do a guitar cover to your drums. Cheers!
Um...that was pretty bad ass. I need to learn some stick tricks. Been playing for 20 years but didn't have my own practice kit for like 9 years straight. My playing suffered. I've had my own kit for 2 years now solid. Any tips for those stick tricks? Nice cover man. I play this song a lot myself.
Drums are so well tuned...
This cover is so damn good, wish i could play this song but my drumming skills says otherwise😂
Fucking beautiful man!
@xpert787 Thanks man!
Could you possibly do some smashing pumpkins covers? Would love to hear you rip through "everlasting gaze" "porcelina" or thru the eyes of ruby..anyway love this channel. Much love
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I think you should do a song from diamond eyes, gotta love that album man :D
godlike :)
