This is my drum cover of "Triad" from TOOL's Lateralus album (released May 15th, 2001). Learning this instrumental track was a huge effort for me, but the learning process was a lot of fun and it definitely tested my abilities as a drummer. Triad is a colossal album closer (before leading into Faaip de Oiad, everyone's favorite Tool song), and it highlights Danny Carey's creativity and power.
In attempting this cover, I strived to replicate elements from Danny's live performance, as well as incorporate certain elements of my own (Swiss-triplet variations, tabla samples, etc.). However, staying true to the original piece was my priority. Although I'm not 100% happy with my performance on this cover (need to work on being more relaxed, and I'm not too thrilled with a couple of inaccuracies in the middle section), it was worth the effort to learn (for the most part) a song that I've loved for a long time. This was quite the challenge, but I hope to have at least done the song some justice.
Thanks for watching,
Owen McKinley
Thank you to Paul McKinley and Mike Pappas for their greatly appreciated assistance.

I'm not sure everyone realizes how unbelievably difficult this is to play. All four limbs a moving independently of one another and all keeping perfect time with each other. This guy absolutely crushed this...Danny himself would be proud. Fantastic job dude.
I agree. I think this is one of the most complex bits that Danny has ever come up with. I put on Triad and crank up the few minutes just to hear how all four beats slowly merge together. It's unreal.
@@mkmkmk1337 Rosetta Stonned : Allow me to introduce myself
Seriously. This song is so incredibly difficult
find me another person who can even attempt to cover this song.. and a bid you farewell and good luck..
100%
9 years later and still the best drum cover of Triad on the web.
Greatness is timeless!!
Even your grandfather, who is 80 years old today, can recognize the incredible talent t you exhibit. It has to be inherited as I recall the days in First Grade when I played the triangle and the rhythm sticks. Rock on Owen
Your grandpa Mac 10/29/2013
Am I the only one who cannot hear the complexity of this track in the actual recording on the album?
Honestly thought this was one of Danny's more laid-back songs until I started looking into the actual live recordings and covers. The guy is insane. Great cover too.
I agree. Something's up with the mastering that doesn't satisfy like I expected.
I'm a drummer and it still took me a while to pick out all the notes on this song. Danny's playing is way too low in the mix for this track.
I take that back. Its mixed for that monolithic feel
@@SharadKalawar you really went through a journey on this one
Thank you very much! Your kind words are appreciated. This song was incredibly demanding for me in terms of developing the right feel for playing it, memorizing it, and being relatively comfortable executing the poly-rhythms throughout the entire piece. Again, thank you!
you still jammin?
@@aquawicket dude right ? i miss this man
Great job brother
9 years later and I'm watching this with my jaw on the floor. Unreal!
You nailed it. Very well done I’m in awe…Danny would be very proud Fantastic!
I'm pretty sure most people don't know what they have witnessed here, this is a flawless execution of a mind blowingly difficult piece. Hats of motherfuckers, that dude desereves some groupies!
but its of course a great cover and till now the only one on youtube... that says everything about that song...
If he can repeat it
Fkn A
Best drum cover video on the internet I've seen, hands down. No switching camera angles. No potential cheating. Just playing one song straight through. You got the juice now
How do you cheat a performance?
@@12gaugeStratigrad chopping together different video angles to coincide with a mastered audio track to appear its one done in one take
@@drummerdummy I think faking would be a better term, as cheating is more, "getting around the system and getting an unfair upper hand. " ordeal. But, hey, let's rejoice in this sexy performance!
@@12gaugeStratigrad it is typically done in a shady way though as to deceive people into believing it was one take. Some even go as far as to deny such allegations when called out, or may describe video as such with no trickery. I've seen it that is why this rendition triggered such respect. Although upon countless views i could almost swear there was a spot that didn't match up but i very well could be mistaken. Either way tis a top notch performance 👍
Holy shit son, scientists need to study this
Janissary No it isn’t
JesterLibre127 Reality shock jajaja still majestic...
Janissary What’s your problem? Y’know, I’m sick of people considering the members of Tool “gods”. It’s absolutely ridiculous and they are in no way notably fantastic. I guarantee many modern drummers can do the exact same thing with ease, they just choose not to because it does not fit their musical style. Hell, I’ve been playing drums for a little over a year and I can play almost all Tool with just a little bit of practice time.
Janissary And why is that? Because I don't choose to worship a band because they make unique music? Because they intentially change the time signatures in order to make the band seem out of the ordinary? You don't get famous from being good, you get famous from being iconic.
Yeah buddy, you could play all Tool songs with a little bit of practice time.. Good for you champ!
But if you actually practiced and listened to how it goes, you would know that you were as far off as you could be. I'm not talking Tool here, but you being full of it!
You have no idea clearly what music theory for drums is, and you think that you can play things, because you think the shit you play sound right. Which it doesn't, which you would learn if you practiced, which you clearly don't, 'cause if you already think you're good after 1 year, you're never getting anywhere!
This is one of the most impressive things on UA-cam. If you disagree, it means that you are wrong. I come back to watch this a lot. Absolutely beautiful.
The only Triad Drum cover video, absolutely awesome!! Accuracy, technique and complete domain of the polyrhythms
Thanks dude!
just one question, how do you play the sequence from 5:04 to 5:30, is ok on my right hand, and double bass drum but the triplet from the left hand specialy on the accent on the ride's bell is kinda hard to ensamble with the right hand and double bass, how did you develop the complete sequence?
I separated each limb and isolated the patterns before brining them together. Right hand, then Left hand, then Right foot, then Left foot. I'm sure there is a better way, but for me this is what was most efficient. It simply took practice; there was no "easy" way to do it. Hope that is helpful advice!
how you had the balls to attempt this I have no idea. good fucking job dude.
If you can play Triad on drums, you can pretty much play anything.
It's shit like that, that pretty much proves you know nothing about music.
Nuhuhuhuhu So because he thinks playing triad means you can play anything, he knows nothing? Enlighten me oh musically wise one.
Because there's much else to play technique wise, oh idiotic one.. Look up Joe Morello and tell me when Danny and Joe style of playing is similar enough to make you think you can play all of Morellos songs, not with the skills of Mr. Carey, but only from playing Triad?
There you go, you've just been educated, I think you ought to.
You see, I'm one of those guys (annoying ones) that actually knows what I'm talking about, because I don't open my mouth (unlike 99.99% of humanity) before I actually have learned something about what I'm uttering.
I've been playing drums and bass for years, I've went to two music schools and I've just taken a course on composing music according to the common practice period. I'm sick of people talking out their ass, because they know a little bit or worse yet, play music and know nothing about it!
Nuhuhuhuhu i agree with you, i just thought you sounded like an arrogant snob. But atleast you know your shit, more than i can say for most. and in terms of drumming would have to say my favorite is Danny Carey simply because he can create my favorite Beats. while there are better drummers I appreciate what he creates more.
I’ve watched this hundreds of times throughout the years and it never ceases to amaze, thank you.
lol I was like wow that chick looks strong
+nicholas biddle then I saw ur face lol my bad
+nicholas biddle Haha, no worries man. Glad you caught a glimpse of my manly face ;-)
haha
I thought the same thing XD
You have a marvelous mane ill say OP. Fantastic drum cover, Truly remarkable!
They should just rename this song to "The Danny Carey Song"
or Rename Tool, to the Danny Carey Band.
+Berj Bedrosian ^
+Berj Bedrosian Between this and Merkaba. Good lord....
Y'all better show Justin Chancellor some more respect
What the Fuck Did you Say ? I do respect him. He's just nowhere Danny's level.
For those of you who are interested, I uploaded a 20min drum lesson for this song (the annotation for this video is posted above the "Growth - Track #11 Drums" annotation). Thank you for all of the nice comments, everyone! They are greatly appreciated.
Owen McKinley pleaze make a lesson for shed!
***** I'd definitely be willing to construct a lesson video for that song if enough people express interest in that. For now, I've uploaded a complete drum transcription of "Shed" (transcribed by Travis Orbin; ua-cam.com/users/shaftninja) as well as some section-by-section transcription images that I made. These documents can be found in my Shed cover's video description: ua-cam.com/video/n2pI8P71ITM/v-deo.html
Owen McKinley wow I was just thinking if anybody's done that. Thanks man!!! Beautiful playing!
Oh thank you man, but i am pretty sure even with the lesson we cant play that
Hey, guess what. That's my son!
He's awesome. I keep coming back to this video every now and again. And he blows my mind every time
You should be proud just for his posture alone lol
incredible drummer
First YT comment. Just wanted to express my appreciation for you, Owen - in helping me see this song 'in a different light, under a different angle'. Thank you. That was awesome.
Thanks so much, really appreciate the nice comment! Glad you enjoyed my efforts and of course, Danny's composition.
Gullapalli Raghuram love the pushit intro reference
Danny would be so proud. By far the best cover of this song.
I never thought anyone other than Danny could play this!
I'm blown away!!
This is so perfectly balanced in every way. Technique, sound, power/subtlety, and above all, feeling. You’ve got the feels!
There is nothing but praise in these comments. Awesome that your skills are appreciated, Owen.
11 anos depois, esse continua sejdo o meljor cover da internet.
Back again 9 years after my first time watching and commenting on this play-along. Still amazed at the showing of musicianship here. It's a shame this video only has 360k views.
killer on point...danny would be proud
whoever said you can't make music with just drums is just wrong.
Couldn't agree more
Well... this isn't exactly 'just' drums guys.. And no, they are not, as music is defined as rhythms and notes harmonizing in a comprehend able way.
you corrected everyone in this comment section, just let people say whatever they wanna say...
You need a hug.
But since you pride yourself for being a smartass, let's dissect the textbook definition of *music* ;
"Vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion."
That doesn't literally translate to, "You *need* to have multiple instruments to create music."
All you need to do is harmonize sounds into a melody.
A cymbal has its own sound.
A tom has its own sound.
etc...
Combine them together and construct a melody with them and you have music.
But the most important line is the "expression of emotion." Which is something you seem to have undermined.
If you can make music through sheer vocals, then it's also possible through drums alone. As long as you have the secret ingredient, emotion.
In conclusion, suh muh dick.
Drumming is how music was born back when we first started hitting things.
holy hell, that was incredible. i had no idea how intricate this song was. you were displaying some things i've never seen any drummer do... Danny is truly a god among men! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The limb independence on this song is just sick.
No cuts. So awesome. This is how real cover vids are made.
I've shown this video even to my mother, great composition and rocking awesome cover, anyway, here is something I'm sure you've never heard: you look like Danny on this video :o
Thanks dude, I appreciate that. Hope your mom enjoyed it! And haha, I think that my hair in this video is the only thing that resembles Danny. The man is literally twice my size.
I cant seem to comprehend the difficulty behind covering a piece like this..the tabs make your brain explode and its as if your covering this because its a super challenge, unlike many other songs which are just too easy to cover
Thoroughly enjoyed this, thanks for posting. I can easily play this on my 6 or even adapt it for my 7 string but my drumming chops are years away from playing Danny's groves like this. It's great to watch someone play who's obviously devoted a great deal of time on something they love.
Thanks so much, really appreciate the comment man! I've always dug Adam's playing on this song, equally to the drums. Such great writing and his "soloing" in the first 3min is killer
Simply put....borderline perfect. Any more perfect and you'd need to be DC himself. Subscribed and shared this on FB. Well done, Sir!
DeLL116 I appreciate the kind gestures, thank you!
I try and I try.... And I try... to practice moving those Swiss triplets around the kit like that, and I just can't do it.. I'm gonna tear all of my hair out before I ever get it right.. Nevermind the rest of the song...
Anyway, outstanding job man!! I wish to someday play this song somewhere near as good as you!
Great, GREAT playing!!!
Start at a slow tempo then build it up
+brady abernathy Thanks dude! Try to understand and separate the pattern of each limb before bringing everything together. It'll take some time.
The part of the bridge starting at 5:04 has always blown my mind. Seeing someone actually perform it (perfectly, no less) was a little head-explodey. You're damn, DAMN good, man. Thanks for uploading!
Danny carey is literally one of the only drummers that i cant even fathom what hes doing. Like some drummers i know ill never even be as good as but i can still imagine how they get that good and what theyre doing, but not danny man. I do not know how your body can keep timing like this. This is fucking incredible man good job.
I don't often leave comments after watching covers, but mate! This is a sensational performance and I think it's only fair to write something as I am sure you put a lot of bloody hard work into this performance. The coordination is what really blew me away, wish I could make better use of my left hand in my playing. Top level drumming. Dig the send off from the track too. Not sure why anyone would thumbs down your drumming. Keep at it!
Whenever I don't know what to watch I play this video and then I can't sleep for the next 6 hours because it's so bloody epic
F************************K.......... Tool songs always have the most intricate and difficult drum lines. BRAVO!!!! Well played!!!!!!!!
I still come back to this vid years later 👍🤘
woww if you can cover Tool's triad you can do anything!! great job!
The skill to be able to recreate this song on drums is top notch. Thinking about the skill it takes Danny to create it keeps me up at night.
dude. slayed it. period.
The hand pattern w/ the bass pattern at the start is hard enough, let alone the whole track! Good job man
I keep coming back to this cover, Thanks Owen for your hard work, This is one of the best drum covers i've ever seen/heard. You just blow my mind, cheers from Spain.
10/10 - this is phenomenal. Best Tool drum cover I have ever seen... Much respect to the time you put into studying and mastering the part. Do more Tool!!
genious!! what a performance....... keep it that way....
Respect.
Well done.
Impeccable
This was an absolute joy to listen to and watch. Easily the best drum cover I've seen in UA-cam and I've seen LOTS. Great work.
Unbelievable independence! Well done man!!!
Awesome... truly awesome. Well done, man.
this is one of the best drum covers of a tool song i have ever heard, excellent job
Hypnotizing, very impressive.
Outstanding.
Amazing work. Seeing how this song is performed adds to the listening experience. Well done.
Awesome, stunning!
Love the sound of your kit. You rule.
Absolutely incredible...
Beautiful
I guess non drummers think the part between 4:54 - 5:26 is the easisest. However its the hardest part :)
absolutely nailed it...Would love to hear it on a live, open kit. Those kicks and snares aren't getting enough love in the recording!
mindblowing effort owen..gud job
beautiful work.
wow. Absolutely insane. Nice work!
Amazing coordination!
Good stuff here! Thanks for putting in the effort and making the video. I watch it whenever I need a little push and inspiration. Works every time!!!!
Excellent dude! That is a solid cover. Unreal...

AMAZING sir.
The amount of detail in your analysis of this was awesome. I watched the tutorial and saw the time and effort you put into it before I watched this video, so I have mad respect.
I enjoyed that. Excellent playing!

The only cover of this song worth watching on UA-cam simply due to the accuracy you have man, simply stunned!
Awesome! Nailed it!!
This dude is insane. Absolutely killed this to.
