Great song to get my son started on drums on. Teaches him basic rhythms, beats, and techniques. Great, easy fundamentals to learn while learning this song. 10/10 beginner's song! After he learns this, I'll get him into some harder stuff like "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" and "Billie Jean".

Alot of drummers can play Dream theaters music but imagine just how hard it must be to write the drums for any DT song. Mike Portnoy is one of the most creative drummers out there. To make this short, Yes alot of people can play Dream theater songs on drums but just a few drummers out there could actully WRITE the drums.

      I know I'm a little late, like 11 years.....
      But just wanted to say,
      Tru dat, Tru dat.
      You're absolutely right.
Anyone can copy great drummers, but could you actually write the great parts that you're copying?
The answer is yes, if you keep copying and covering other people's stuff you can eventually come up with your own style and flavor. Everyone has a hero or heroes that they looked up to in order to influence them and make them who they are.
Except Portnoy. He is a DRUMMER GOD from another dimension. He knows no beginning and no end. He is the alpha and the omega. "The Dance of Eternity" is insanity layered on top of insanity × pi.
      You do the math

I still think that there are plenty of drummers out there much better than he is, but the truth is no one can be better than MP playing here. Mangini and the others covering this song make it perfectly, they're monsters but it's just like a cd player. I'm sorry for DT losing him, it's bad for them cause they lost the only one drummer speaking their language, and for MP as well, cause he lost the only band where his taste can really make the difference...

This. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of players all over the world that are vastly more skilled and play faster than Portnoy, but the way he puts his soul into his music, that is certainly unique. The thing that never allowed me to fully accept Mangini in DT was that he sounds like a computer. Sure, he can play stupid fast, but he sounds robotic, he doesn't do anything a keyboard couldn't do. I praise him for his skill, not his style. Portnoy is pure soul.

MP at his prime...gosh his older stuff was amazing. Hes one hell of a drummer & writer & brilliant. I notice in the past few years - a year or 2 before he left DT, he wasnt coming up w/ as intricately written parts anymore. Many of his fills ended up being similar. Now hes playing easier stuff in all his side projects. I think he really just wants a break from the insanely complex writing n stuff n just have fun. I still wish he was part of DT, I have yet to think MM is as good a fit for DT.

I saw DT play live and I was like 10 feet away from Mike. I was standing to the right of the stage to get a good look at Mike. It was January 15, 1993 in Pittsburgh at a place called the Metropol. Images and Words was the album at the time and DT was still not a viral phenomenon yet. The place was just an upscale nightclub and I saw these guys close up. I remember it like it was yesterday. Tickets were like 12 bucks but a friend was one of the club promoters who got me and another friend in for free.

The whole section is in 4/4. That should give you leverage so you could slow it down and get the sticking, ghost notes, and speed right.
