There is a large black wire in the rubber boot between the drivers door and the body that breaks into. This causes some issues with the dash lighting, gauges not working, rear windows rolling down by themselves, A/C stops working and other things I may have not noticed. When that large black wire breaks in half, the wire is still touching at times, depending on if the door movements breaks the contact or not. I removed the BCM, Hood Latch handle and a few other things, to get access to the back side of that boot. I removed that black wire from the housing then under microscope, pried the legs of the terminal open to remove the old wire, then I crimped in two 16AWG wires that will bend easier when the door opens. I then soldered the two wires to the large black wire, after it passed the boot, so the solder joint would not flex, when the door is used.

Thanks so much WhizKid you got me through it! The BCM switch fixed some things. Still couldn't get windows to roll to pass inspection but then wife's sister messed about, pulled back the rubber cover for the door wiring and found a split off wire. I'm not mechanical at all but after your help with the bcm i felt more comfortable poking around that area for the other side of the wire cluster, fed more of it out to the door, and managed to find that pesky bugger and get em cinched up together. Bless her heart. Everybody else that even glanced at it wanted me to replace the whole rest of the car part by part just to get to that one little wire! So the driver's panel controls are a go now! Again thank you so much for making a video that was so simple and thorough that even I thought I might give it a go!!! The WhizKid rules!

Ran out of characters in previous post. I wanted to add that by having the key in the on position, taking the negative off the battery, removing the old BCM and replacing with the new BCM then placing the negative back on the battery the new BCM is programed. We were told by the repairman that the re-programing of the new BCM was part of the reason for the expense. If these steps are followed the new BCM is programed and ready to go. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS YOU SAVED US OVER $700.

THANK YOU so much for this helpful video. Repairman told us $700-$1000 to replace the BCM. Went to the junkyard and bought the BCM for $35. We were sure to buy the part off of the same model, 2000 Grand Cherokee, V-8, 4.7L. Followed the instructions on this video except for one thing the man at the junk yard told us to turn the key to the on position, take the negative off the battery, then take off the old BCM and replace the new BCM. When complete place cable back on battery. FIXED!

Just removed BCM in my Jeep Grand Cherokee ‘04 4.7 without removing the whole fuse box (not sure if ‘99 and ‘04 are exactly the same though). I moved the seat back as far it goes, took a torch and had a good look under the fuse box to see how everything is arranged. The next part is tricky as you have to remove the 4no. T20 screws that hold the BCM to the fuse box, without seeing what you are doing; now I think it would be a good idea to use a small mirror just to get the key right into the screw. Makes it easier if you disconnect the grey and white plugs from the BCM first and move the cabling out of the way. With all screws out, I had to use a screwdriver to gently push the BCM out of the fuse box (it is very tight so be patient). Job done with less effort than in this video, although it was good to watch it to better understand how all the parts are connected.

Just did this. Saved me $1278@ the mechanic. For reference, the star screws take T20. The two squares with the center screws will unscrew to a certain point, then you have to squeeze the sides of the squares to remove them. This is easy, do it yourself and save the money. Took me an hour total.

    Jesse ,
If the fuse blows instantly then that means that you have a direct short or overload somewhere . Look for a bare wire that has the covering wore off and touching ground somewhere or a pinched wire somewhere that has gotten pinched somewhere and shorted to ground . Also , look to see if water has gotten into the tail light assembly also check to see if there's a circuit board in the tail light assembly . It could be shorted .

I have a jeep also with the lights coming on and off at night and killing the battery. This is due to a malfunction with the "Auto" setting on the light switch common for these jeeps. IF you switch it to the off position, you won't have this problem. You can replace the entire switch but doesn't seem very cost effective to me.

As we showed and explained in the video , I replaced the BCM because of the instrument panel goind dead as well as a few other things not working right . The BCM controls these things . It was the first thing that my mechanic said to change for that reason . Thanks for watching.

Actually, bigbuck14716, I didn't know if it was bad or not . My mechanic said that it controlled these body functions ,so we decided that it wouldn't hurt to try and rule out the obvious first . It''s a computer that controls all of yor body functions ,like windows , instrument panel ,etc. Sort of like a brain . The windows are spposed to be controlled by the BCM .

    Scheryl,
I can't help much as mines still not fixed . There are so many things on there that's electronic and could be causing the problem by overloading or confusing the computers ( google problems on these vechiles ) . It could be a loose wire , bad connection , bad ground as well as a bad computer . One mechanic said that they sell an updated BCM for these vechiles and one sait that the BCMS need to be programmed to your vechile . Heater problem could be if it has the dual climate ...

Actually , yes it could be the body control module doing that or possible a bad ground / loose connection doing it . The body control module controls these things . I've also been told that you have to have them programmed to your particular vehile . I haven't gotten mine fixed yet so maybe you can help me . What exactly are you calling the Multifunction Control switch ? The levers on both sides of steering column ? Are these jeep on the internet ?

    Bobi ,
Look up under the hood as there are more fuses/ relays in a box there near the battery . At least there is on my 1999. You could have hooked up a wire wrong on trailer or the vechile trailer connector. You could have shorted out a fusealbe link or your BCM .

you are going to need to replace the light switch, I had the same issue for about 3 years and it worked perfectly fine if not on the auto so I left it alone. during that time my battery kept draining so after 2 days of inactivity would have to jump start the vehicle .. 3 battery later and 2 alternators 1 day replaced the light switch with one from salvage yard for $15 and fixed all my light and batt drain issues.. by not replacing the switch it cost be about $300 from batt and alternators etc.

Question. I have a 2005 jeep liberty. 120,000 miles. Having a problem with low beams not working. Brights, parking, fog, dome lights, etc all work. Only thing that dont work is low beams. New bulbs so they are not burnt out. Low beam module is good. When the module is in the lights work but never shut off and kills the battery. Have to take module out to shut off low beams. Could a bad BCM be the cause of it? Or a multi function switch? Or maybe a specific place to start looking with the wiring? Also check engine light came on. Pulled codes said cylinder 3 misfire. Its sucking up antifreeze like crazy. 1 gallon in a weeks time. No noticeable leaks. Everything looks dry and no puddles underneath. Could it be head gasket needs replaced or would you guess something else to look at? Cars never over heated while I've owned it which has only been the last 3 weeks. Temp gauge stays the same. Any help to point me in the right direction or even some ideas would be helpful. Thank you!

    Missy ,
Sorry for taking so long to answer, but been busy with work and doctor visits.. Have you looked for a blown fuse , fuse link ,bad connection or loose ground ? The bulb connectors in the bulb socket could also be corroded . Try some contact cleaner . Does the front left turn light work ? If not then it could be a bad turn signal switch . Maybe a bad flasher or other bulb in the system ? They both can shut down a signal system .

Nicely done. Easy to follow, BUT PLEASE HELP!...My 99 Cherokee is having elect. troubles. Cluster not working, proved it's good, cleaned negative contacts near battery.
( I have not changed battery terminals yet) Checked all fuses, investigated loose, or bad connections. No issues found yet. Interior fan comes on at will when in the on position, and the a/c compressor still kicks in while the heat is on.

Good video. I've got a crazy situation with a battery drain with key off.1997 Jeep TJ. I disconnected the neg battery cable and connected my test light to the cable and then touched the battery post with the test light and it lit up bright. Obviously something is on. So I started pulling fuses one by one and when i pulled the 10 amp fuse controlling my gauges the light went out. However the gauges are never on with the key off, yet the circuit is on constantly. . I plug the fuse back in and the test light again lights up bright. What ya think? Darn, I wish I still had my old CJ5!!!

My 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee, has the rear taillights out. I checked the park light fuse, found it blown and replaced it. Still no lights, even when I press the break peddle. The front/headlights are fine. I also noticed that on the shifter console there are no lights. Is there a connection between the two? (this all started after hooking up a mini trailer).

  • @spugsautorepair
    @spugsautorepair 9 років тому +4

I was a bit distressed when I saw you suggesting to all of the people that watch this video that they should unhook the battery. Well, you're partially correct. It is extremely important to ONLY remove the NEGATIVE terminal. WHY, you may ask? A: When you remove the positive terminal, you erase all of the radio stations preset into your system (Simply removing the negative cable does not erase your programmed stations). B: When you disconnect only the negative terminal, it resets your on-board computer. If you unhook both, it will NOT reset the on-board computer. C: If you disconnect BOTH the negative and positive terminals AND have an after-market alarm system, you JUST shorted it out and now you can't start the vehicle because it thinks it is being stolen. You're welcome.

    • @ESRepair
      @ESRepair  9 років тому +6

spugsautorepair Ok, that's interesting. You state that current still flows if you leave the Positive connected. This would maintain the presets in the radio. However, current must flow for the presets to remain in memory. If you just disconnect the Negative from the battery, how does current flow now that the circuit is broken? ? There must be a complete path for current flow to maintain Memory. It doesn't matter if you only disconnect the Negative or Positive or both. current cannot flow without a complete path between the positive and Negative terminals, therefore, nothing works without electricity.... --MrFixit

It's a wonderful source of info is this YT. The most unfortunate and common problem with it is people that lack editing skills.
All the vids of people that appear to fiddle and fart and fidget and fumble and, there was another one, oh yeah, fuck around , that with a little good editing could result in something worthwhile. I end up missing any good points made because I'm FF through the rambling crap. Trying to get a job done is so time consuming already without having to decipher what some alligator gar fisherman is saying , especially when he has treacle gluing his tongue to the roof of his gob.
But thanks anyway. I stlll appreciate your video.

Got a seemingly (to me) dumb ass question for ya. 1999 location for BCM and 2000 should be the same yea? Also, could this be whats causing my lights to come on and off at night and kill my battery. My logic says yes, but i'm hearing from other jeep people that it could also be my Multifunction Control Switch. I know this video is old, but thanks if you can get back to me with any insight. much appreciated.

Probly dumb quest or.wrong video but my 99 jeep chero/lorado 4.0 6cyl has had a small knocking for a while. Now out of nowhere just driving normal i go to apply gas and itll lose power to point of almost stalling. Itlk idle fine but go to give gas and power loss and a loud clunk. 236k on it and just worried engine is done. Any sugg already did fuel filter and no improvement

    Interior lights won't go off.
'Key in ignition' chime goes even after you remove the key if the drivers door is open. (Only the drivers door, none of the other doors cause it.)
I removed the fuse for the interior lights. "Key in ignition" chime still sounds until you close the door, but the lights are off.
Even with the fuse removed the battery still goes dead after a while if it sits.
I replaced the BCM, no luck. Anybody have any ideas?

Joe Primal Did you ever figure this out? My Jeep just started the exact same behavior two days ago, and I'm at a loss.

Chris Broussard From what I've been able to find out it's usually caused by a wire shorting to ground or a broken wire in one of the front doors. I made the mistake of switching out a couple of computers from eBay first and lost the originals which got me lost deeper and deeper in the mire because I guess some of the computers have to be programed or something at the dealer to work with the others. Everything I could find was very vague.
In any case, from what I understand the best thing to do is get a meter and pull off door panels and the dash and start looking for problem wires. I just ended up facing the fact that my jeep was really not worth that much and I parked it and filed a non op on it. IDK what I'm going to do with it over the long run.
I bought a 4runner. They still have problems, but when they do you can always fix them cheap and easy.
Wish I had a better answer for you, but Dodge Jeep are notorious for electrical gremlins. Changing out the computers got me nowhere. In fact worse and worse problems. It might be well worth it to take it to an auto electric guy who might have some experience with it. Good luck.

You forgot that you need to have the bcm flashed so that it works with the other 2 computers that are in the jeep. Otherwise it won't work
