Out There: Riley Hawk

- Riley's had to fight for every clip, filming video parts alongside Rowan, Kirby, T Spliff and the Shep Dawgs. We hopped in shotgun to check Carlsbad's iconic haunts and see what led him to the jiu-jitsu mat.

if riley had a kid and people ask 'who is your grand father? tony hawk and kurt cobain' that will be like a perfect dreams lol
No shit 😮
@@user-ln7kt1ft3g feels like a movie, and the character was dreaming about have a grandpa and that was tony hawk and kurt cobain lmfao
@@devincarson8398 i still cant belive how this happen in real life lol
He got the heart shaped box 😂
If you're still skateboarding in your 40s/50s with the same fanaticism as you had when you were 8 years old, I salute you 👍🏽
don't drink and smoke, take care of your body and you'll be able to go longer
I roll on mat like I was skating by the past :)
I get to witness kris markovich doing the craziest shit at 50 in st.pete. honestly its a blessing i can cruise at 35
I'm 43 and got back into it about 12 years ago. It's a love that will never die. Skating keeps you in shape, gets you outside and is a great way to meet others. Learning new tricks is still as fun as it was when i was a teenager. Currently working on spinning a 270 over the hip at the park.
I'm 49, ate shit very hard at 5 am, skating with a local kid before he started work. Should be right in a couple of days. Feels great. Sk8 forever
You could hear the emotion in Tony's voice, he loves his son a lot
Yeah, but I also think Tony's voice always sounds like that 😅
Tony is a kook
no he loves his money more
Tryin his hardest to act like Riley ain’t privileged 😂😂😂😂🤡
@@andrewashford5617 he never said anything about struggling, Riley has said many times he's fortunate and lucky stop reaching
Riley has a good head on his shoulders. He's humble and self-aware. Great skater, musician, and person. Good dude. I thoroughly enjoy this series 🤙🤙
Out There has been some of my favorite thrasher content
Been skating since 98’ and am a Black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I am always pumped to see others cross over between the two!
i started BJJ a couple months ago i just recently got my first stripe on my belt it felt better than landing any skateboard trick i ever did i skated for about 3-4 years before i quit because i had no friends left that were still skateboarding all day so i started training it was the best decision of my life i look up to the black belts in my gym so much just the fact they put at least 10-15 years of there life to get that belt is mind boggling much love ❤
I've been skating and surfing since I was 6 years old in 2006, I started Jiu Jitsu in 2022 and now a blue belt... Its inspiring to see so many talented skaters and surfers cross training into Jiu Jitsu and it always seems to benefit their life in many ways like Riley says, it keeps you conscious of your health and body. I also found that it develops a mindset that starts to bleed into your surfing and skating in a spiritual, playful way like Martial arts.
Started skating in the 90's & I too am a Black Belt !-- I still like to watch skateboarding, but found my home in the rollerblade community.
I stopped skating and started no-gi jiu jitsu. its been a great transition!
A skate PE class is such an awesome idea. Skating has so much to teach young kids about important lessons going into life
My HS had skate PE when i was in school , so dope.
The way Tony's voice was getting when he was talking about riley you can tell how proud of a dad he is and how far riley has come on his own
on his own? are u kidding?!
@@m.e.8595 These comments get ridiculous. I truly believe its just their own companies having a.i. bots spam them to give it credibility.
@@markdelgado6984u think?
In case if anyone is wondering who Francis is, she's Kurt Cobain's daughter. Good for Riley honestly. He's just like his dad in wanting to progress and be healthier but also wanting to skate no matter what.
So sick. Heelflip nosegrind on that ditch ledge always gonna be a standout clip!!
I’m 48 years old been skating for more than 40 years, still have as much love if not more now as I ever did! You’re only young once but old forever! Stay young!
Amen. 53, and just had a hip replacement. Ouch.
there is a diy park here called FDR. im never going to stop but im staying out of there man. that place is crazy.
@chrhadden look up Chris Raymond. Cheers to Philly, JR Neves(RIP), all the hardcore kids, and FDR.🔥🔥🔥
This is so cool. I’ve been the opposite in a sense of Riley. I spent my life in martial arts. Competing and eventually owning my own school until December of 2023 when I lost steam after just being crushed in a few comps and well, just realized I peaked already. I started skating again, after doing it for 2 decades and stopping for the last 10 years. My daughters got me back into skating, I built them a mini ramp, got an old fish tail, and now I feel revitalized in my martial arts. I’ve been better in bjj than I have been in years! This just hit at one point!
32 and still skating. I wanna ditch drinking so bad. All my homies are still doing it non-skater/skater. It’s peer pressure, I know it’s self respect. I know I’ll get there. I want to skate as long as my body want me to. Props to Riley! One of my fave skaters!
Moderation is key if you continue to. It definitely becomes harder on the body when getting older 🤘🤘
I moved to get away from drinking all the time. Just drink on special occasions now.
Just do it. Once you pass the weird first phase of it, you'll start focusing on the great great benefits, I quit 3 years ago and it gives you power. When you taste the power of will is like nothing else. You can do it
try microdosing mushrooms. I'm not kidding. I have zero urge to drink ever, they satisfy, and much healthier. Plus, while on them, they force you to respect your body more. You see things differently
Sign up for jujitsu bro it will get you away from the drinking really fast
We were on the same flight back to SD, he was a super nice guy took the time to chat with me and ask me questions, even though I was all geeked out. Respect!
It's not easy to carve out your own authentic path when you have such a famous parent above you but Riley figured it out, found a way & genuinely flourished as his own individual. Who now just happens to get to share cool moments in his life with his dad.
Especially when ur dad can’t skate street🤡😂
Imagine playing skate with your dad. How awesome ❤
imagine beating him for the first time
35 years old, started eating better, stretching, hitting the gym 6 days a week. Finding other avenues for exercise. I skated everyday from 10 years old-25. Work, house, wife, kids and career. It happens so fast. If I fall now and get injured, It takes WEEKS to recover.
All good bud.
Nah 35 aint that bad. Thats like the last time of your life you can fall and it isnt terrible. At least for me it was. Im 46 now and I wont even try any new tricks for the fear of falling now isnt weeks to recover, it might be forever.
Man up
@@andrewashford5617 that man up in your mom
I'm a big fan of Riley man, such a humble dude, and an absolute ripper as well. You are a relevant pro man, ur a beast!
Rad segment Riley rips and that back lip drop back lip was so sick 🙌
Casually listening to the best Electric Wizard album... Respect
thanks Riley for pointing out what it means to be an athlete. A lot of skaters (at least in my opinion) lack that. It was one of the reasons I quit skating when I was 20, glad I found my biggest passion in life back when I was 25
greets from germany
The photo of him and his pops on vert is so amazing,!!
Forgot how amazing those Shep Dawgz videos were! I remember watching each consecutive instalment and being blown away at how much better they got every video
Tbh this was a NEEDED and refreshing POV on skate culture
Its pretty sick how self aware Riley is.
It’s pretty sick how you think someone who curses in every sentence is “self aware”
how does him cursing not make him self aware? im sure he knows that he's cursing. @@jasonhernandez6775

very cool, ju jitsu is an amazing humbling sport. Such a good outlet, cool to hear him expanding.
Yeah i love his skating
I already liked Riley hawk but him training just made him so much cooler to me
Absolutely as bad ass as it gets
I remember seeing little Riley in the old Tony Hawk Trick Tips videos on VHS… man time flies. Sooo awesome to see him grow up to be a humble inspiring person. You usually assume people growing up in famous/rich families, end up being shitty people. Sick that he made his own path. I’m just glad here’s another example of how down to earth most “real” skaters are. Cheers to the Hawk legacy! You’ve made such a huge impact on my life & I’m forever grateful!
Riley, you have made your own stamp and impact! 1 word for you, KNARLY. Keep it going man
this guys a legend in my mind. always look forward to what ever he dose
Whoever ended the edit with the backlip to backlip (rail to ledge) and the heelflip FS nosegrind popout KNEW WHAT they were doing.
Riley is a beast
Riley’s been my favorite for a while and it’s bc of the shop dawgs I rock w Kirby and Rowan
Riley just became my new favourite skater. Always knew he ripped and skated the gnarliest stuff but after this I appreciate what a good dude he is
Damn they went to Carlsbad and didn't think much of that gap, that's crazy
Hearing Tony talk about Riley is amazing. Idek why, but it is just so fucking cool lol
Ya dont head Tony get emotional often, pretty rare thing to capture. Keep killin it Riley!
As a skater of 15 years and a BJJ blue belt, I’m super stoked to see this!
Love this segment of Thrasher. Keep up the good work!
Real shit, you work hard to hopefully hear your dad speak highly about you. That hits different and Riley has always had the talent. Keep pushing
I’m honored to have grown up with Riley we went too the same elementary school same middle school and same high school all in the same place right in the heart of cbad cali
Great to always see you skate
I am a brown belt and been skating for 20 years
I understand how you feel
Good stuff
Riley has always been such a rad dude. His skating has always ripped
Great video, and very inspiring!
I quit skateboarding a few years back, cause i wanted to "mature" and get my life together while battling with sever anxiety, adhd, depression ect. I was extremely overweight also, so my body really didnt let me enjoy it anymore. so i quit!
Turns out, years later, skateboarding wasent a problem to anything for me, im still overweight, still issues with anxiety and still struggling! So i get back to it very recently. At 36y and 300+ pounds. What i change is my mindset. I enjoy it for what it is, and with humility that my health demands. Im just trying to be healthier and enjoy my self. I might get hurt while skating, but hey! Ill rearange my expectations each day and any moment necesary ,because even just cruising is fun....Thats what skateboarding is all about!
Happy for the still young chap...Tony is a great person and def a great dad..they have a solid bond....thanks Riley for doing the vid.. enjoi Ed very much..look forward to other covers brother
Soo fcn dope seeing Riley doing Jiu Jitsu!!!!!
I love watching Riley skate. In what universe he could possibly think he wasn't particularly relevant in skating anymore and was simply lucky to have sponsors, I don't know. What humility! Watching him is what pulled me out of a 20 year hiatus from skating. Watching him is what put Lakais on my feet and the occasional Baker board to ride. Bummed he's not on IG anymore, but I also get why he's not.
Imagine having SKATEBOARDING in common with your dad. You guys had skateboarding through your veins. I grew up with you guys, i still remember the Tony Hawk's Project 8 extra DVD video from ps2 where Riley and Figgy were just two little boys skating.
The only thing i have in common with my dad is sobriety. And after everything we have passed together i still skating sometimes, life is so god right know thanks for sharing this.
Tbh I never expected much from Riley as a skater, wouldn’t have been surprised if he had an easy ‘get on’ but that changed immediately when years and years ago I watched his baker part, became a fan immediately. He’s a dynamic skater with a heavy bag of tricks!❤
The hawk legacy is a magnet to me every time I see this name i click.
Riley is such a good dude. Stoked to see him healthy living life and training BJJ!
This is cool af! Out there some of the best thrasher content! Plus always down for more Riley stuff
This video came at a good time for me, my dad passed and i used to compete in BJJ after college and tore my shoulder and was out for a bit. Then fractured my ankle at the skatepark. Was too easy to just party and work and hit the bottle. One year turned to two. Now im sober and back on my skateboard and will be back on the mats once my epilepsy is a little better under control. Thanks for posting this , it hit home!! Riley seems like a great kid. ❤🎉
Was almost avoiding watching this, than it came up next randomly on next watch. I can def say I actually needed to watch this, been trying to focus on my health outside of skating, and this was jus perfect for me. 👍🏻
Been skating for 25 years, BJJ for 3 months… skating is its own thing but makes me realize how much closer it is to a “martial art” than a “sport”. The individualism, the recognized levels of accomplishment, the never ending puzzle of it all, the respect for and of your peers, it really is a martial art you do against yourself and your environment
Raised by an amazing father ! Your a damn good man Riley
Riley looks good and healthy dude 🤙🏾
Been skating most my life, found jiu-jitsu about 5 years ago. I found it to be very similar, instead of doing trick on objects you do them on people. It's like if the spot or the park fought back. It's got style, it's social, and you spend a lot of your time failing, you get those awesome eureka moments when you finally figure new things out, just like in skateboarding. I don't skate as much, but living in a rainy city with cold winters, and no indoor parks, it's nice to have something to do year round.
i am 36 and daily yoga does help me a lot, i am better than ever now and learned a lot new tricks in the last two years i never thought i will really learn. never skated switch for twenty years and now its became like my thing. my switch/nollie flips still suck but im getting better every other day. its such a high feelin when you learn new tricks and there are still a bag of tricks like no comply variations i will learn when my muscles dont want anymore xD. i only hurt myself when i am too tired or not warmed up properly, last real skate injury was rolled ankle 10 years ago. so knock on wood and if it happens i ll embrace the pain like rodney 😂
The Shep Dawgs videos are so sick 🔥
When i first started watching Out There I took note of the dual meaning. Out there, meaning out in the world actively skating, but also someone who thinks differently or is very extreme or unusual. A great example is the Bobby Puleo episode. Lately it seems like the episodes are just mini docs about normal thinking skaters like Kalis or Riley.
This was sick! Shep dawgs forever
That was awesome
This is awesome. I got to do jiu jitsu with Riley a few years ago when he first started. Cool to see he’s stuck with it. I remember his balance and body awareness being on point, which made sense, but it was different compared to most brand new jiu jitsu athletes.
Great video!
Love this
11:39 was absolute butter
The side hug?
Gotta be hard living in Tony’s shadow but chase has gotta love what he’s doing skating or otherwise. Good for him. Loved the video! Hope to see chase in some more skate comps.
Skateboarding and jiu jitsu a match made in heaven
We love Tony and Riley, very kind words from your father Riley, I could tell he was getting upset
33yrs old Mon to Fri my Company work schedule then Sat Sun are my dayoff which I really skate and as long as I'm landing my basics Kickflip Trey 50s 5-0 Crooks Im good with it and if I learn something new thats a big bonus for me ! love Riley !
That was great thanks for the edit
I miss skating man, but doesn’t give me that joy I once had, and I skated for damn near 20 years and got local sponsors and everything and just randomly stopped , I still snowboard but no skating
Never too late to return. I started learning to ride a bowl at 30 and it felt like rediscovering skateboarding.
I salute this guy. It’s tough growing up when your dads shadow is so long.
super dope to see him training. I too train jits and skate
That is the best 300ZX combo out there: White over black interior with the removable roof. You're so incredibly lucky to have that. 300ZX has been on my dream car list for so long. Now they are so expensive or beat to hell with terrible mods. Take care of that thing. Beautiful car!
Finally the story of how the shep dawgs became so good. I always wanted to hear it and it was epic to hear from riley how all these dudes that are now pro were really putting them out there to get clips.
Loved seeing Frances
Rileys Sick I love that he trains bjj as well! From one BJJ skater to another keep goin!
I always imagined Kurt Cobain having a really mean tre flip, .rip
Love this. Go Riley
I wasn't really a fan of Riley Hawk before this video, but he seems really down-the-earth and like he has a healthy mindset about skating. I do skateboarding and martial arts too, so I was pleasantly surprised this video opened with a martial arts tournament. In my opinion, martial arts and skateboarding are both good options for people who want to exercise and express themselves without a bunch of meaningless rules or the boredom of going to a gym.
So dope!
Hard to pick my favourite trick from the last 3. The kickflip over was something.
Aw shi I love the new thrasher intro
Those shep dawg videos are truly classics, still rewarchable to this day low key. Rowan’s part in vol. 2 was crazy do yourself a favor if you haven’t seen any of them
I looked up to these kids at the park it's cool to see how it all played out
That was just a dope video
My two loves being skating and jiu jitsu this is amazing. Im literally Rileys age and can fully feel the effects of my body and not eating right through my 20s
Smoking weed constantly. Thankfully i dont drink. Alot of evaluating going on and this video just nailed it home tbh.
You rule hawk. ALWAYS
I love you Riley!
Electric Wizard's Dopethrone album on the car stereo, love him for it :)
This is So Dope 🔥 🔥 🔥
Tony,s support of Riley and general stoke seeing him come into his own was almost had me crying watching this.
A legend born of a legend.
Jiu-Jitsu is the shit! So dope to see him grappling!
Much respect Riley 🤘
Listenin to a little dopethrone during the commute..nice
God bless
Caught stickers that Riley threw as a little kid at a Tony Hawk demo in Roseville Michigan about 2002ish?!? Bam Dill O'Connor, all the vert club, it was a good day. Got Tony's autograph too and he remembered my friends story with him about getting fired at an IhOP in Austin. Love this family.
This is forreal , I was hating how I felt on the board and I got into grappling and boxing and the conditioning and mental it gives you makes your skateboarding so much more confident and easier
