It’s tight to see someone that slowed down for a while and then came back harder than ever. This doesn’t happen a lot in skating and it’s inspiring for sure.
I still remember being a kid and seeing his "This is Skateboarding" part and being so influenced by Spanky, Herman, and Romero because the were so young. Seeing them rip at such a young age was so inspiring that I could rip too.
It's nice to see our heroes still going. Made me start skating again

Man, I guess this is as close as we're gonna get to the long form skater docs of Epicly Later'd. It makes them feel like nuggets of gold. I wish they'd put out more and make them longer. I know there's an audience for it.

I really wish they would bring it back. Patrick O'Dell could not have done a better job with the series - every episode is great. It's the perfect mix of human interest and skating lore. Some of the best stuff vice has put out period.

Spanky has been killing it FOREVER
met him at a demo in bakersfield, ca back in 2003. we're the same age and he felt like a "regular guy" just like my friends(except he was really good!) now, in this video, again he seems like a regular guy. skating, working, has a family. it's great to see someone in skateboarding my age that's still relatable.
@GuataGuata no, they're talking about people changing after they're famous whether they mean to or not. i had the pleasure of hanging out with Spanky 3x in a few months, he is a very cool guy. Reynolds and Kirchart had enough shit on their minds and were just kind of like "oh hey man" and then kept doing what they were doing. i'm not faulting them at all, some rando just showed up at Kirchart's birthday party, cool who cares, i get it. i'm just saying, Spanky was very inclusive, not too good for anyone. one day everyone was leaving and i felt like i was the "last guy at the party" and was just about to take off when Leo Romero was like "well what are you up to? we're going to grab some food, wanna come?" and showed me all around the city, we ate, we skated etc. i don't see a lot of pros doing that but Leo and Spanky were chill as shit.

Literally fighting back tears of joy. Spanky is and always will be on my mount rushmore of skaters. he's legendary gem and it's beautiful to see how much of a change he made after all he went through. my top three of 2010's Mike MO, $panky and Malto

he is the definition of a cool guy. everything he does from his art , skating ,music taste, & fashion is all super tasteful .
In 2010, Spanky and the Emerica team were touring in Europe and one of the demos they had was in one of the worst skateparks in Finland. I think there were only like 20-30 people that came to see the demo and I remember when Leo started skating he said "this is so fucking weird". Everyone was silent, there was no music, it was so awkward (but honestly quite the usual in Finland) 😄 however Spanky got out of the van smiling, did some bluntslides on a bank similar to those LA ones, signed some caps and had a good time. Mad respect Spanky, you have always been the one skater that inspires me to pick up my board and go skate. ✌️

As a fellow new father, I have even more respect for Spanky and his time management, considering how productive he is skateboarding and art/design professions. He’s the sickest. So stoked for him.

spanky is a great skater for kids to look up to. He's been in the game for a while now and reinvented himself into a slightly different skater that still puts out amazing parts. I love that he now has a foothold in the industry with his creative work too. Love to see it!

It makes me so happy to see how he was able to come back from adversity and claim everything he lost, his story inspires me to be better everyday and im pretty sure it does to alot of others as well. Spanky is the perfect example of getting knocked down once and getting back up 10, mans will forever be one of the goats 🐐

Man I’m so glad to see him doing so well and happy. Having started watching him from when he was a kid with Herman and then through all the trials and tribulations over the years to now where he seems so content but still growing is awesome. I was really hoping to hear Reynolds talk because Spanky’s progression and path in life with Baker is what I imagine Reynolds now hopes for when he first finds these young kids going wild in the streets. Grow to love and love to grow.
One of my all time favorites. Most of my tricks are because of him especially switch fs big spins and bank skating
Wild this came up on my UA-cam home page. Went to middle school with Spanky. 97-98 I think, 12 or 13 years old. He was 'the best skater in school' back then, popular and well liked. We weren't really friends, I was a band nerd, but my friends and I also skated (posers, really) and we were in awe of how much more advanced he was. Cool to see he's doing well.
His art for Baker has been such a touch of freshness too. Love what you are doing man keep it up!

Seems like Spanky is a very mindful and intentional guy. I'm happy to see him thriving and still being a top pro after so long. I find his demeanor and output inspirational. Anyway, thanks for putting these thoughtful pieces together, Thrasher. Being able to connect more personally with other skaters helps remind me that I'm not alone at times, and that the physical act of skating isn't all there is to to skating here on Spaceship Earth.
