Wow didn't remember watching this 6 years ago! and love it just as much. Before you unwind it you can give it another go by inserting a syringe into various places in the ball to randomly add a color, then wash again and then unwind. Will give a different dimension. It always turns out as it wants to for the most part, that is dye's gift of surprise! that I love.
FYI, the yarn was pre-soaked by watching. That usually keeps a lot of dye from getting to the inner layers. If the yarn was dry, you would get a completely different effect. Me, personally, I would do a light simmer to avoid felting the yarn. She doesn't say how much vinegar she used, I use 4 to 5 tablespoons with about a teaspoon of dye. You did awesome here, I'm going to try the same colors.
I appreciate the fact that you've taken the time and effort to create a tutorial for those of interested in indie dyeing! Don't worry about the negative comments because I think that despite the blurriness issues I was able to get the basic idea which is really the point of this tutorial!
I had not one negative thought during the viewing of this tutorial. Than I read the comments. Gosh, people are way too picky. Any way, you made a solar eclipse with your yarn! Awesome coloring and I will easily do one very similar, as I learned how by watchin with out my aversions in the way, which, if you think about it, is a good way to go through life.
i am normally very sensitive to sounds and blur etc but i was knitting and watching and the blur did't bother me at all; your demo and precise explanations were such a gift of inspiration and encouragement; colours are fabulous, even tho i dislike orange, this was a delightful and well explained tutorial. Many Blessings!
This technique has been my favourite one too. So far I've always been using acid dyes which do not break as nice as your food colours, so straight away I ordered food colours to try it out. And by the way....the combination of colours you used is stunning and so beautiful. Thanks for sharing :))
That yarn is beautiful! Loved the video. Thankyou for sharing! I'm going to try this, maybe in ocean blues or maybe in the dramatic beautiful colors you chose.
Dear Jessica, thank you so, so much for this tutorial.....I was looking for a way to dye to get this long gradient... I am so excited and will start trying this technique very soon. You made it look really easy. Thanks again.
The result form the process is beautiful, I like how the colors turned out... yes the precess is time consuming but it's well worth it. Thank you for sharing and for up loading this video =)
I was able to the basic idea about to dye yarn, if the video is out of focus it doesn't bother me. Thank you very much for you've taken your time to create and shared this video :) (Sorry for my english, it's very very bad).
Hi Jessica, I loved the video. I will definitely try this as I think this will add a new way of dying my homespun wool. Look forward to your next video - Petra
Thanks for the video - interesting effects from having the yarn in a ball! I have always read or been told, to never never wring yarn when it is wet - your yarn has not pulled out to look like string from wringing it? Interesting. I squeeze mine dry, then wrap in a towel and sit on it for a minute or two, then arrange it loosely on the ironing board in front of the room fan. Small amounts dry in minutes - large amounts an hour or two. Thanks again.
Great video...only a few questions. How much water? How much vinegar?? Is it white vinegar?? what brand gel color is it that you used?? Is it ok to use Tulip one step tie dye paint instead?? You kept saying wool....Can this technique only be done with wool yarn, or can I use 3ply sport weight. What if the person I want to make this for is allergic to wool?? Thank You. Your yarn on the video turned out sooooo beautiful ☺
Josie Ojeda The amount of water and dye really does vary, so I can't help with that. It looks like she was using Wilton food dye gels, but you can use any food coloring. She mentions wool because this type of dying only works on animal fibers like wool, alpaca, mohair, etc. It will not work on artificial fibers or plant fibers like cotton. Sport weight or 3 ply refers to the size of the yarn, not the fiber content. And unfortunately, if the person is allergic to wool, this might not be the project for them. You could check with them and see if they're allergic to all animal fibers, or if there are any they can use. Hope this helps!
Thanks for this tutorial! I'l be trying this with my handspun Leicester White. 💐❤️ I'm wondering how long the food color last, won't they fade? Can this be washed like normal woolen in washing machine?
Hi Jessica, I really love this method of dying! I'm going to try it too. I am from the Netherlands. ( I tryed one time to dye yarn and it worked out pretty good.
Hello, Jessica! Your work looks amazing! I like the final result of dyeing. The best channel with the best tutorials! Definitely subscription. With best regards from Russia :)
I need new glasses anyway so the blurriness didnt bother me. Was just the steam anyway. Im going to try this way soon. I love an ombre yarn. Nice video. Next will be even better.
what kind of project did you use this for? also cannot see blue or greens, did they happen? looks like some great grey and blacks ... i was not expecting orange either, so like you said, it really varies ... a surprise in a good way this time!
Jessica, I’ve never tried this type of dying, but I’m going to because you have made it look so easy. I’m looking forward to our groups next dye day. I do have one question about the dye, is it colorfast?
I also appreciate the time you took to make this video because I now have info I didn't have before watching your video...but I don't know the water to vinegar ratio. Type of vinegar the amount of boiling time, name and brand of dye you used due to your camera being not focused etc there is a lot of info missing and leaves me with a lot of questions
Sad that it is very blurry but the video is very interesting and we got the knowledge you gave us... thank you for your time and work... I will try this technique as soon as I will have some yarn to dye
Cotton yarns will have pale colors in acid dyes. You need soda ash to set the color in cotton. There are lots of good tutorials online for dyeing other types of fibers. The method being used here works with protein fibers such as wool and silk.
Thanks so much Jessica. Because of your video I was able to create my own gradient yarn. I wish I can upload a photo here. I mentioned your name on my Instagram. instagram.com/p/BC79Uq1l88E/?taken-by=iinwibisono
This sounds like a great video, but watching it was like my glasses prescription went up to -6 and it made me nauseated because everything was so out of focus. Would you consider re-doing the video with proper focus?
poor thing sounds sick on top of the out of focus video. i got the gyst of her tutorial but maybe next one will be better. the second half was great. love how it turned out. awesome yarn
I appreciate the tutorial but good lord that focus issue was so incredibly annoying I had to stop midway and just skip to the end because I was close to getting a migraine. :(

What do you mean the yarn was presoaked by watching?
I appreciate the fact that you've taken the time and effort to create a tutorial for those of interested in indie dyeing! Don't worry about the negative comments because I think that despite the blurriness issues I was able to get the basic idea which is really the point of this tutorial!
Right? I'm sure shes aware it's out of focus, so I'm not sure why every other comment has to state the obvious. I really apprecaited the tutorial, too
I had not one negative thought during the viewing of this tutorial. Than I read the comments. Gosh, people are way too picky. Any way, you made a solar eclipse with your yarn! Awesome coloring and I will easily do one very similar, as I learned how by watchin with out my aversions in the way, which, if you think about it, is a good way to go through life.
I've wondered for years how this was done, and I never thought of doing it this way. Thank you!
It doesn't bother me that the video is out of focus, you can see the method fine!
i am normally very sensitive to sounds and blur etc but i was knitting and watching and the blur did't bother me at all; your demo and precise explanations were such a gift of inspiration and encouragement; colours are fabulous, even tho i dislike orange, this was a delightful and well explained tutorial. I was skeptical when I started watching but the finished product is so beautiful!
Ok this was a great idea! who cares if it was sometimes not focussed people just need to 🤐 I’m excited to try this!
What an interesting way to dye yarn! Thank you!
The yarn color came out beautifully!
Including the amounts of vineagar, dye, timing, etc in the description would be really helpful, but otherwise thank you!
This technique has been my favourite one too. So far I've always been using acid dyes which do not break as nice as your food colours, so straight away I ordered food colours to try it out. And by the way....the combination of colours you used is stunning and so beautiful. Thanks for sharing :))
Thank you for this tutorial. The yarn turn out beautiful and you did a very nice job of teaching us how to do it!! : )
salad spinner is a great way to gently spin your yarn dryer with less squishing
It is but i found that doing that, then doing some squishing dries the yarn even quicker
That is a very beautiful skein!! I am on love with those colors together. Great job!!
That yarn is beautiful! Loved the video. Thankyou for sharing! I'm going to try this, maybe in ocean blues or maybe in the dramatic beautiful colors you chose.

Beautiful! Love the colors.

Your end product was gorgeous! Thanks for sharing!
I keep reading comments about video being blurry. I didn't have any blurriness when I watched the video.
Great video.
Wow, amazing! It's on my list of things to do. Thanks for the tutorial
Is it wilton gel food color ?

thank you for presenting this technique. it was very informative.
Thank you everything i needed to know in order to make my own ombre style yarns.
How much vinegar and which type...white or the brown....? Thanks for any help...the blurry doesn't bother me..you did a great job!
Hello, Jessica! Your work looks amazing! I like the final result of dyeing. The best channel with the best tutorials! Definitely subscription.
With best regards from Russia :)
Looks like a fun thing to try, how much water and vinegar did you use?
The orange/yellow is my favorite...but it’s all beautiful.
I need new glasses anyway so the blurriness didnt bother me. Was just the steam anyway. Im going to try this way soon. I love an ombre yarn. Nice video. Next will be even better.

Love the colors
Beautiful yarn colours. Great video. How much water/vinegar did you use? Thank you
Thanks for this beautiful lesson!
Hola, consulta. Es 100% lana o es acrílico? Y que tinta usas? Parece colorante de torta
This is so cool. I'm going to try it this weekend!
great video. I didnt even notice the focus. It turned out great though! What did you make?
Very helpful tutorial - thank you!
What does felting mean? ThanQ for the vid. I want to do my own Christmas yarn for next year (God willing.)
Would this technique work for cotton? I'm allergic to wool.
Did u use 2 100 g hanks for this. Just wondering and the yarn is beautiful thanks for sharing with us
10:45
Will this technique work with acid dye? Is the food dye color fast--will it fade?
wow, it is impressing. Turned out beautifully, i definitely have to try your methodm Thx fot it :-*
Where did you buy you wool yarn? Thank for this video!!
Thank you for sharing this technique. I really enjoyed learning it. Didi you soak the ball before dying or is it dry wool?
Thank you so much for a great tutorial I'm definitely going to try this. I've subscribed so I don't miss your others 😊👍
Jessica, I’ve never tried this type of dying, but I’m going to because you have made it look so easy. I’m looking forward to our groups next dye day.
I do have one question about the dye, is it colorfast?
Can you dye the yarn up the yarn on a cone? My second ? is if you can use stripper on yarn?
Love the colors and the technique. Thanks!
Is there any specific reason that you used gel food coloring rather than liquid?
Beautifull yarn! Thank you for this video!
Greetings Milda
Thanks! Very informative
What amount of vinegar do you apply?
Why did you start with the darker colour?
This is art.
Thank you for defining ombre. My sister thought ombre was a color
I found this video really helpful, although the bluriness is not ideal, would you consider uploading a new version? :)
What did you lose whilst it was blurry? Genuinely interested as everyone's brains are different
Thanks for sharing, I always to know how to dye yarn like that. 😀
Sad that it is very blurry but the video is very interesting and we got the knowledge you gave us... thank you for your time and work... I will try this technique as soon as I will have some yarn to dye
Alive never used Wilton colours. Could you tell us the colour number please.
how did you dry it?
I have a 450 grams undyed yarn. But it's 100% Cotton. Would this process you've done, will work better in cotton yarn? Thanks!
+Iryna Boehland I've dyed cotton yarn with just kool-aid. It worked great and the rinsing wasn't bad.
Cotton yarns will have pale colors in acid dyes. You need soda ash to set the color in cotton. There are lots of good tutorials online for dyeing other types of fibers. The method being used here works with protein fibers such as wool and silk.
Is she using blue dye? Or brown dye?
Wow good work mam.... ♥
great tutorial! thank you!
Beautiful. Inspiring. Just monitor the transcription. It doesn't quite say what you do.
Thank you for a nice video.
Большое спасибо! Очень красиво!
why wont it work for cotton yarn? wool is just to scratch for me.
Labor of Love
me too its such a pity cos the colours are so cool but its starting to hurt my eyes
Интересный способ. Спасибо.
love. love. love it :)
Pretty
awesome!
Blurry image because the sample was too close to the camera. But interesting. Thank you.
Thanks so much Jessica. Because of your video I was able to create my own gradient yarn. I wish I can upload a photo here. I mentioned your name on my Instagram. instagram.com/p/BC79Uq1l88E/?taken-by=iinwibisono
Можно попробовать
Sweet!
Thank you!!:))
How looks the sweater by this yarn?
Wow!!!!!!
This sounds like a great video, but watching it was like my glasses prescription went up to -6 and it made me nauseated because everything was so out of focus. Would you consider re-doing the video with proper focus?
you guys are overly dramatic, if you can't follow this then maybe dying yarn is to complicated you all those complaining.
can u show us ur vomit. super o.a
Molim vas, omogucite prevod na srpski jezk !
Your camera isn't completely in focus 😟
How do you 'kinda' soak yarn, kinda twirl it, kinda rinse it out, kinda turn it, kinda add more color
Geez, you don't really dye your yarn without wearing rubber gloves, do you? Don't assume the dyes are not toxic.
Heather Cameron it is Wilton’s food colouring gel
poor thing sounds sick on top of the out of focus video. i got the gyst of her tutorial but maybe next one will be better. the second half was great. love how it turned out. awesome yarn
I appreciate the tutorial but good lord that focus issue was so incredibly annoying
I had to stop midway and just skip to the end because I was close to getting a migraine. :(
