  • First off! I want to apologize for the horrible cutting off of my head later on in the video! When I pre-set the camera is was fine but once I pressed that record button it decided to do something different :(
    WEAR A MASK I did not wear a mask because I needed to explain the process to you guys. I highly recommend you wear a mask when dealing with dyes. Mask recommendation: N95 Dust mask. Thank you.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Anywho! I decided to share my method of how I speckle yarn along with many other methods. Below I will write step by step instructions on how to make speckles if I went too fast in the video :)
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Equipment:
    -Stainless Steel Steam Pan & Lid can be found @ www.webstaurantstore.com
    -Latex Gloves
    -Dharma Dye Powder
    -N95 Mask to prevent inhalation of powder
    -Dharma Citric Acid
    -Syringe
    -Strainer
    -Plastic fork & spoon
    -Plastic bags that can be found at Walmart
    -Cotton String
    -Steamer
    -Cooking Pot
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Instructions:
    -Pre Soak your skein with water and citric acid for about 30 minutes
    -Use a cotton string and tie it around the skein so that you can grab it easily later on
    -For me, I used two medium dunkin donut cups into each pan. 1 dunkin cup = 2 cups of water
    -Add two skeins
    -IF YOU JUST HAVE ONE SKEIN: add about a cup and maybe some more, depending on how much water is in the pan
    -Have the heat on low and wait until the water starts to steam
    -With the color choice #1 lightly add into the strainer and tap around the skein. The lighter you tap the lighter the speckles will be.
    -Using the spoon method, add as little onto the spoon and use your finger / wrist to swoosh the dye around, lol. Do this for every color
    -Let it sit in the pan for 25 minutes covered
    ***
    For hand speckle, mix up your dyes and flick, syringe, brush, or use the fork to spread around those colors onto the skein.
    -Once done, put the skein into a plastic bag and tie it.
    -With your pot and steamer, add the water at the point just under the steamer base.
    -Turn heat on in between medium and low setting, getting the water to just simmer, not boil.
    -Add bag on top of steamer and steam for 25 minutes
    ***
    -Once the timer has ran out, let the skein cool down to room temperature, allowing any dye left over to still have a chance to be absorbed into the skein
    -Once cooled, grab the cotton string and rinse out, making sure it isn't bleeding
    -Hang up to dry and enjoy!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Thanks for watching!

    A little chef’s trick when sprinkling anything in powder form: the greater the height you sprinkle from, the more even and spread out your distribution will be. The lower the height you sprinkle from, the more concentrated the distribution will be, but the more precise your application will be at the same time. When using strainers, the finer the mesh, the finer your speckles will be.
    Using a makeup brush or a paint brush tapped against a stick will give interesting effects as well. You can experiment with powders or with diluted dyes. Dip in the dye, if needed tap off sole excess, then tap against the stick over whatever surface you want to apply to.
    Edit: I just thought of something: if you happen to have a sous vide stick and a vacuum sealer, an option might be to put your speckled yarn in a vacuum sealed bag, seal it, then pop it inside a water bath at a high temperature setting and leave it in there for any time you want. It might even work for solid dye jobs to do multiple skeins in different colours at once: insert the soaked skeins in different bags, add diluted dye, use the immersion method to remove as much air as possible (use heat resistant ziplock bags), immerse the bags in the warm water bath. Mmmmmm… my mind’s positively teeming with the potential. Great temperature control, no scorching, and absolutely no possibility of felting as there’s no agitation either. I’m a hand spinner and this offers possibilities for dyeing raw wool as well.

    You did a great job explaining. Thank you. I use a small amount of water when doing speckles, and have never been completely pleased with my results. Thanks for the "how to", now I can see that I am still using a bit too much water. I can't wait to try again! I love the fork flick, haven't tried that one! Looking forward to your next video! XX

    I just stumbled on your channel! This is such a great video. I live in South OC and was so stoked to see another fiber fan here! I hope our knitting and dyeing community grows. I have small zero lot yard. I have sun dyed in glass jars, plastic bags, hunt thrift shops for ss vessels to dye in. I have dyed with my pantry (turmeric), food coloring, kit, acid dyes and more. One of the LA Yarn stores did a NORO dyeing class last year but I missed it b/c I was out of town ): I love to dye on the stove and stick it in the oven. I am absolutely in love with inky saturated colors right now and can't wait to try indigo. I look forward to more of videos. I am gonnaknit on rav

    I learned that some dye powders are mostly salts, so I literally cut my dye with table salt 1:1 for speckling, so it goes on lighter - you can always add more, but you can't take it away once it's on the yarn!

    Awesome video! Where do you buy your yarn from? Where do you get the dye from? Do you think dying on top of the stove is a little more accurate than trying to do it in the oven? What do you wash your yarn out with? Do you have any tips for keeping the dye from pooling when you knit it up? I really appreciate you taking the time to do this video ❤️

    • @breakehr6356
      @breakehr6356  5 років тому

      Thank you! I'm hoping to get back into making more of these guys and doing a podcast soon. Been doing a lot of working and traveling 😅
      Where I buy from:
      The most common place a lot of dyers buy from is Wool2Dye4. Knit Picks is another recommendation if you wanted 1 or 2 skeins at a time. I also go through a mill as well and that's Sweitzers.
      Stove/Oven:
      I Would think it is. I never personally used an oven to dye yarn. One of the things I read through the Internet and dye books is that you should avoid using the oven and microwave if you use food too with those kitchen equipments. This is because of the acid dyes being used in the yarn and you don't want those chemicals mixing in with your food.
      Washing the yarn:
      I usually just rinse it with cool water. With my dyeing method, very rarely does my yarn bleed (Only time I ever had bleeding issues if it is flourescent colors or light blues and reds). Especially pan dying cause when you are keeping the heat on while dyeing it is already setting the dye to the wool. For soaps Dharma Dyes website has wool wash soap that's safe for you to use for after dying or finishing a project.
      Pooling:
      One of the things I heard that can be done to prevent pooling is to use two different strands of the same color and alternate rows. For example, you can use the beginning strand of the yarn caked up and knit a RS and WS and then, using the same caked up yarn, take the other end of the strand and knit a RS and WS. The other one is depending on your needle size and gauging. I recommend doing swatches too :)
      Hope that all made sense! If you have any more questions please feel free to contact me. ❤️

      You mix the citric acid in water and soak your yarn in it. That's the water in the pan with the yarn. There are classes on blueprint.com or craftsy teaching step by step how to dye yarn by a professional with exact measurements for everything. You get a one month free trial and that's all I needed to watch the videos and learn the basics.

    Also a strainer is not a strainer same. The grid on the screening varies and that will effect how hard you have to tap it meaning how much and what size particles it allows so I guess experiment first maybe even with salt to get an idea.

    • @breakehr6356
      @breakehr6356  5 років тому

      I let it steam with the heat on for 25 minutes. With my past experience, if you turn the heat off after it starts steaming the speckles will be runny when you wash the yarn. With the heat on, the speckles stay nice and in tact. Barely and bleedage in the colors

    • @eddavanleemputten9232
      @eddavanleemputten9232 6 місяців тому

      I know your question is a year old… but for any overdyeing, my educated guess is to take into account the pigment(s) already present in the yarn. The easiest is to get yourself a colour wheel from the art painting section of an arts & crafts store.
      In your case I’m assuming that with pumpkin spices you mean oranges and browns. I’m afraid blues will never be completely cancelled out by those colours. You’ll get a more subdued, brown/grey tinged colour at best. Perhaps a green tinge. Adding red pigment(s) will migrate it more towards browns. Adding yellow(s) will have it go more towards greens.
      In paints/pigments, orange will mainly consist of the combination of yellows and reds. Add blues and greens, and you get browns/greys. Add reds to warm it up. Add yellows and you get bright(er) greens. If your blue already has a bit of red/purple in it (purple = red + blue) you get a warmer undertone.
      A possible way to figure out what colours you get is test dyeing. Another way to get at least an idea is to play around with watercolours or inks on white paper. Do some wet-in-wet tests and do some wet-in-dry tests. Wet-in-wet tests mean you mix your colours without allowing the paint/ink layers to dry between colour applications. Wet-in-dry means you paint your new colour(s) over dry colour, either something you painted (you get a bit of dilution of the original paint or ink unless the paint you use is permanent once dried, which isn’t the case with watercolour but is the case with highly diluted acrylics) or paper that already has the colour of your yarn.
      No idea if this information is still useful to you, but I just thought I’d share.

      you need to rewatch the beginning of this video where she tells us she isnt using one because she is talking too much to explain thinga but does recommend them when using dye powders.

      Yes, she did mention using a mask so you won't inhale the powder at the beginning of the video.

    excellent video, but I do wish you would wear a mask or at least tell everyone they should as dyes are bad for the lungs

      Usually I mention in the video that you should wear a mask. Maybe I mentioned that in the solids video and didn't in this one 😅. The only reason why I did not wear one in this video is because I couldn't talk and explain with the mask on. Tried and my voice was incredibly muffled lol.

      I just know with speckles/sprinkles, inhalation is an even bigger issue. Just concerned that others would try it without mask

      Hi there! At @3:50 she says you should use a mask, but due to her talking she wasn’t so we could hear.

    "Comfortability"? How about the noun "comfort"? Is it really necessary to make up new words? "Depending on your comfortability..." or "Depending on your comfort," or "Depending on your level of comfort..." Does using made-up words make your yarn dyeing "more good"? Or maybe, god forbid, just "better"? How about "more prettier"?
