Crazy thing is that a few years later Shannon was surfing in a contest and was next to an another surfer who was attacked by a great white. He paddled over to help cause he remembered how he felt when everyone abandoned him during his attack.
This story reminds me of another story you did where the man was attacked by a shark, dragged himself to the car, stopped in the middle of nowhere for some water and was attacked by lions (and survived!). Guardian angels working overtime in both stories.
What are the odds of being attacked by two GW sharks at the same time? Is it as likely as lightning striking twice in the same spot... or being struck by lightning twice? Two large GW sharks is the stuff of nightmares. Great podcast Hal.
I got brushed on my leg by an unknown breed of shark, when I was 14. I only got a brief glimpse of it, but I swam to shore about 20 ‘ away. It was off the coast of South Carolina. I have not swam in the ocean since. From my memory of what I saw, it was a brief view, but I believe it was about 4 ‘ long. I do remember a feeling of terror. Lakes or pools are where I swim.
Same here while I was in the keys I grew up in Miami and Hollywood Florida and I was in the ocean and the same thing happened to me in the keys while we were snorkeling and it was big and I wasn’t I think that scared me the most knowing it was bigger than me and it could eat me so I am blessed that I had good people with me and we all got back on the boat so I said if I make it out of here I will never go again and I have not.

Another great single attack Hal. 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈 White sharks also hunt the seals following the sardine run. Really great friends. And, Shannon actually ended up paddling over to assist a surfer who was attacked by a white shark a few years after his attack.
There was an attack by two animals (Great White) in 2004 that killed and consumed a young man by the name of Nick Petersen. It was also in Australia. However, I believe that there was one more incident as well?
Do you remember back when several people were attacked by 2 great white sharks who seemed to be hunting as a team ? There were witnesses to the attacks and they said it was terrifying to see. According to different people these 2 sharks were seen together many times. Crazy.
Oh my! How terrifying!! Reason to not go back into the water. I imagine that he has that surf board is hanging on his wall, as a souvenir and a reminder of how lucky/blessed he was that day.
I have been checking out surfing videos. A few surfers have suggested that painting large eyes on the bottom of surfboards helps prevent sharks from attacking them. There were a few tests done on this theory.
I hear there's also some piece of electrical kit you can attach to your body if swimming, or, I guess, board if surfing which sends out signals that the sharks do not like. A bit like anti-IED kit on armoured vehicles in Afghanistan.
Shannon Ainslie case is one in the top of my lists. I think the first shark was bigger than the second. If you look at his board where the first shark bit down, you can see the fin of the board in the centre of the bite. Did that potentially injure/shock the shark to let go & stop pursuing? The second shark would have known about the first being in the area, but when they both went for the same target I believe it backed off, being smaller than the first. That’s my opinion anyway. Did the first one initially go for the surfer already on the bottom of the wave but change target at the last second? These double attacks are fascinating.
Who would have ever thought that it was luck for this surfer that 2 sharks were going after him, the competition between the 2 may have been enough of a distraction that neither could completely "commit " to the attack, YIKES!

Is there something about their senses that give them knowledge of a larger shark in the area before a human would know? Even seals know long before a human of a Great white in the area.
