Thank you very much for the donation!! I sadly don’t have an iPhone 16 to verify but I have the feeling the behavior is similar. You can compare the iso values and will easily spot if the image behaves the same as in the video.
Fantastic video, Julian, thank you so much. As a newbie though, other videos suggest using ND filters at 1250 ISO when shooting in bright situations. Do you recommend stopping down to 200/100/55 or use an ND at 1250/1600?
This is a very clear deep dive on a very confusing topic ! I’m a profesional videographer, and I just got myself an Iphone 15 Pro. I didn’t know it would be that confusing to get the best out of it… We would really need Blackmagic give us the option to personalize the available ISO, kind of like Cine EI from Sony. And to have Zebras defined per ISOS steps 🤔 Then this camera would be fully equiped for run and gun ☺️
This is very informative. Since iphone 16 pro and Pro Max cameras are literally the same, do those settings apply to it as well? Also if i dont shoot in HEVC but 422 HQ i should not worry about microblocking? Do the same settings apply? As i was thinking choosing 1250 iso for daylight is ideal, but looking at the footage you provided it looks horrible, and iso 55 looked best in the final comparison
Interesting findings Julian and appreciate all your work and I have not heard this anywhere else. Personally I found from quick tests, the noise levels at 1600 iso far too high for my liking for daytime with nd filters that some insist on due to Geralds findings. Also interesting you mention ETTR when some are saying you need to expose to left for iPhone 15 pro/max. After fiddling too much with the iPhone I decided to return to my Sony A1 as it seems more fun.
What you missed from his video was to only use ISO 1600 indoors and at low light. For bright daylight use ISO 55, 100, and or 200 max. Julian is spot on.
Thanks for the video. I had similar observations. Btw, have you "secured" your recommended zebra settings with extra range? Because in my findings for 55-400 ISO (on main 1x camera) absolute clipping point is ~ 82%, and for 1600 ISO ~ 96,5%, so a little bit higher than yours. What I've also found - is when using Shutter closer to 360 degrees (i.e. 1/24 or 1/25 for 24 fps), DR and clipping point breaks drastically, independently from iso.
Not sure of what you mean here… But no, a ND filter does’t change ISO’s number per se… It just reduce the light coming, mostly allowing you to use the ISOS you want, while still maintaining the 180 degree shutter rule 🙄
@@danquattro6662 Hey, it‘s purely convenience. 1600 you can easily select with a button in the app and 1250 you have to use the dial to precisely set it. As the have functionally the same image quality, 1600 ist the way to go.
I bought a variable ND filter for my 15 pro. I'd like to ask if 1600 iso is the most ideal iso for most conditions whilst I manipulate the ND filter for exposure adjustments
I guess I will stick to recording in ProRes (I use the LT 'flavor' as it seems to have the best compromise between IQ and storage space) to an external SSD- so much easier to start editing with the footage already on an external drive anyway...
Probably not unless you really need 4k 120. Video quality is going to be the same, and the ultra wide camera "upgrade" is shit. I expected better results in my low light tests, but it's about the same as 15.

I prefer ProRes 422 LT, and avoiding conversion lut’s and using cst’s or color management also helps with banding and artifacts.

Hi, Julian, sorry for asking a question unrelated to the video. Does Audient ID14 mkii have a different sound from Audient ID24? Your ID14 review was 3 years old and ID24 was 1 year old. Listening to both, they did sound extremely different. However, Audient said they should sound exactly the same. Were there any changes in recording?
very good tests, but I will say the same I said on Geralds video about the DR. All this data is very compromised because on Iphones you cant turn off noise reduction at all, so most of this data and Geralds data is based on the noise levels, which makes no sense since you dont know how much chroma denoise or even spatial noise reduction has been applied (I believe by the "oil Painting" look iphone footage has that they use spatial noise reduction but who knows) there is no way to make sense of all this data without having no way to turn all that off. "I see X amount of noise on the video X or Y" is very very relative when you don't know how much noise reduction was applied, maybe there is less noise but faces pores are all gone because of the NR for example. Gerald Also based the DR on footage with "acceptable noise levels" using the very expensive DR chart, but this chart wont show him how much NR got applied and if he lost X amount of details because of NR. Resuming, in my opinion all those tests on Iphones are compromised and the data is contaminated. This could only make sense on android that can turn off sharpening, Noise reduction and even record RAW DNGs and show you the real deal.

I really should have but the A-Roll is actually a Fujifilm X-S20. The iPhone will get close but the depth of field is a straight giveaway.

This is actually pretty much what happens with modern dslr and mirrorless where iso just becomes a digital amplification of the signal
