Wind Knots in Fishing Braid - Don't Let Them Ruin Your Fishing!

  • Without doubt, wind knots in braid fishing line are the worst thing possible for the casting fisherman! Wind knots while fishing cause the line to break and snap off expensive lures, cause massive time loss and sometimes actually cost us fish. They also destroy expensive braid (PE). There are ways to reduce your instances of wind knots in how you spool your spinning reels and also in how you manage your line out on the water. Ebb Tide's JC has had his fair share and has learnt the hard way, take a look at how he goes about avoiding them in this addition to our catalogue of tutorial video. Make sure you check the series!

As a rod builder I have explained this to so many people if I had a $ for every time I would have retired by now. Very well explained mate and everything to point of fact.

@@ebbtidetackle There is plenty of footage on the Fuji website although in Japanese explaining the process of line pealing of the spool and how it chokes up through the guides, this is also relevant to bait casters . proper guide spacing and guide sizing is also very important in reducing drag on line for better casting distance rod blank performance and reducing wind knots , i have been using a SHOUT BOBBIN KNOTTER for over 10 years to tie the gt knot for all braid to leader knots before many other companies knew about them . the early Japanese jigging masters were way ahead compared to other countries anglers. i know I am preaching to the converted but others might benefit from this knowledge. tight lines mate and no wind knots!

Fantastic Insight into this phenomena caused by "Braided Lines"
    It is an Issue .....
I've had several, when 1st changing over to Braid, so much so, I de-spooled all of my braided reels.
It took a while to get the Braid on tight !!
But once sorted out, I have gone back to Braid again.
Thanks so much for this Video Johnny !!!!!

I really need to try some of these maintenance tips and remedies. I live in and urban environment and wanted to get my casts out to roving schoolie size striped bass in the summer from shore, so I was set up at a shop with an 8’6” Tsunami Airwave Elite Light and a Shimano Stradic c5000XG. I didn’t want to break the bank because this is a topwater specific combo for just the middle of summer until about November. 20 lb. Power Pro was spooled on for me at 1/2 price per yard on the machine, and I was assured I’d have no issues even when I asked if my rod pumping, jerking and twitching would cause loose line issues. I was assured I’d have none. Well, my two times out since my purchase have been rife with wind knots and attended by frustration, rage, and the sense that I’ve been bamboozled. This is my first foray into using tackle like this ( I’m a river and lake bass fisherman) and this has made me consider returning the whole kit and caboodle. So, I’ll give this all a try. If anyone else who reads this has any pointers, message me. I had no idea this was going to be so technical; it all just looks like you just launch the damn things and reel.

An excellent well explained detailed video on a problem we all have at some time, this will certainly help me in the future. I suffered last March in Oman with a tapered spool line lay which I should have sorted out before the trip and this cost me an expensive sinking lure but luckily not a fish. Lesson learnt. Thanks again for the lesson John.👍

But had a list of questions and problems to look in to. Il go back tonight better preparee thankyou

Informative video, John. Aside from reducing the frequency and severity of wind knots, lines with a smooth finish and/or with coatings, which I like to think of as 'slick' lines, make it easier to untangle wind knots and with less likelihood of line damage when they invariably occur.

@@ebbtidetackle I was down practicing my stick baiting technique this arv in my local river 😂and I noticed all the slack line I was winding up and was thinking it was pretty loose on the spool

You forgot to mention the most important trick regarding the speed of the lure and line leaving the spool. you should always thumb feather the line as it's coming off the spool to slow it down when casting into side or head wind.

1 line I stay well clear of is daiwa j braid 6lb. I think in 5 casts I had 3 seperate wind knots, shimano kairiki or sufix 832 for me. all cast on the same lure amd same reels spooled the same amount and didnt have an issue with kairiki and 832

I may have missed the reason. What causes the braided line to lay unevenly on the spool? ( stacked higher at front and lower and rear). Thanks

why do most people say not to take the line off the spool for a spinning reel like you did? That's for baitcasters, from what most say. Should the spool be on its side when spooling a spinning reel?

    • @ebbtidetackle
      @ebbtidetackle  2 роки тому +1

There are definitely several theories, but as you cast, the line rolls off in one direction and is rolled back onto the spool in the opposite direction. We haven't seen issues with original direction spooling as shown.

Tip: car wax your guides, especially the first blank and the spool lip. Soak Spray silicone based lube on your line.
