I've been shooting .224 AR (22 grendel) for about a decade now, and absolutely love it. Wish it took traction years ago instead of 224 valk or 6mm arc. 26-28" barrels seem to be the sweet spot, with a +2 over rifle length gas system, atleast for me. Able to get around 3050ish with 90gr Bergers. I'm glad to see someone posting about it! Cant wait to see how yours develops.
Oh My God !!! Your 6ARC is crying at the loss of love with the new kid in town showing up in her domain. I'm staying with the 6ARC as I'm to invested in it to take on another new comer. As always, you make it look easy.
I’ve known about the 22 Grendel for a while now but there is almost no companies making barrels chambered for it and the few that do are usually always out of stock. I would love it if you could do more testing and get the optimal twist rate, gas length, chamber dimensions, and other characteristics just right so it shoots at its best for 80 -90gr. And then produce a barrel somewhere around the 20 to 24 inch length we can buy from you. And also either a custom bushing or a custom sizing die.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one that creativity engineered my handguard. I also have a 936 gas block for my 6arc. I tried three different handguards, none gave enough clearance. Stay free and keep your powder dry!
Great work Kenny . Thanks for for taking us firearms enthusiasts along for the ride with your rifle building and load development and testing . I can see some big companies taking notes of developments . Cheers 🍻
Very interesting Kenny. You have me going hmm. Can't wait to see how hot the barrel gets from an extended string when you're pushing them at 3100fps. Really like to see more load development and shooting of this particular cartridge brother. Echo
I machined reamers/dies for a 40° version of 22 Grendel couple years ago, have 2 AR's and 2 bolt rifles chambered ..... is AWESOME to say the least ! 7 twist Bolt gun runs a mild load of varget with 88's @ 3000 fps was hitting .5 moa and smaller rocks at 900 + yds in 18 mph winds couple months ago. Really is amazing round! R16 , H4350, IMR 4166, even R 19 works (not the best velocities in my limited testing) as well as lots of other powders . 27" barrel has pushed 53 gr to over 3900 fps
Good luck. I have been working with 22 grendel for 2 years. Cannon tactical 24in barrel. Has a lot of brass issues with over growing and pressure. 88 elds as a bullet have been horrible. They get fliers all the time. 85.5 bergers were best but still need buffer and spring mods all the time. My chamber was a Jim Cannon chamber and seems to grow brass .0015 . Sent barrel back and still not good groups. If you come up with a good reamer or barrel I would be very interested in buying one. Good luck. I have experimented with at least 6 bullets different brass(alexander, lapua). Several powders etc. If you want to discuss it let me know.
In my testing, i used the same 6 ARC brass for find pressures and see if their is failure with brass. I loaded that piece of brass 15 times and still holding strong. The 88's are the best performer so far as you can see in the groups shown. This barrel I made and can offer the same at DPGunworks.com I manufacturer rifles
The matches I shoot, I have only seen velocity restrictions to 3200 or 3400 FPS and no cartridges larger than 338. I believe they do that to save the steel. Wildcats are permitted in matches like accurized AR matches
Been shooting the 22 Grendel aka 224 Predator aka 224 AR for several years now. I like it very much, 24” Bull BHW 1/7”twist, 20” AR Performance 1/7.7” twist and most recent an 18” Satern barrel in 1/8” twist. All of them are tack drivers. The 24” 1/7 will over-rotate and disintegrate some lightweight Varmint bullets, no so with the 1/7.7 and 1/8 twist so I designate the 24” as heavy specialist but it’ll shoot fmj 55 and 62 just fine, the jackets are thicker.
I remember a year or two that someone was coming out with the same 22 grendel an never seen or heard about it again, keep up the good work, an looking more on this topic… here is something for a tic for tat, an what is ur thoughts on it…. 25mm for a AR-15? Seen some videos start to come up for the 25 creedmoor. (Creedmoor comes in 6.5, 6mm, 22) AR-15 6.5 Grendel, 6mm arc, 224 Valkyrie.
Im currently building a 25 Creedmoor bolt gun with a WTO switch lug. The availability on 135gr Bergers seem to be regularly in stock. I did some testing on a RPR in that caliber and shown outstanding performance at 1K being 6.8 MRAD. As for the 25 cal, I did own a 25x45 AR15 barrel and was a really heavy hitter. Another great cartridge is 6x45. For the AR, their seems to be lots of choices in either 22, 25, and 6mm to suit all shooting disciplines. A 25 Grendel might be the sweet spot
Jim Cannon did some videos about 2-3 years ago. I believe he makes barrels. This one I made using a Douglas 1:7 twist and a WOA competition barrel extension
Keep it going bud an thanks for responding, just I have all the caliber stated and starting reloading just makes reloading helpful… just hard to get ammo
This video gave me enough info about the 6mm ARC vs the 6.5G to make up my mind. The 6.5 Grendel has better ammo selection and pricing than 6 arc, more manufacturers make it, for cheaper. Both are equal out to 500y and looking at the performance of both from a hunter's point of view the 6.5 Grendel is more approachable and capable for deer and pigs.
I got a bunch of them on sale, probably the last mags you'll need for any AR wildcat cartridge. It's the special follower that tilts to always make sure the nose is up. The ONLY downside I've noticed it's that loaded mags don't drop free, but that is actually part of the design, the sides are designed to swell to accommodate different width cartridges and keep them feeding upwards
So.. would this not be a 22 ARC 😀. If I’m understanding this, you used a 6 ARC taper crimp only to bring the neck size down some and then used a full length sizer 6ARC bushing die to finish it off…. Last quest.. when can I order one! Nice work!
NO, the 6mmAR, 243LBC and 6mm Predator have been out for years. The 6mmARC was done by Hornady to get around a NC clause while they were making someone elses dies. The 22 Grendel/224AR/224 Predator were wildcats long before Hornady made the 6mm ARC. The 6mm ARC is .029" shorter than the rest.
wait so what is the difference between this and 6mm arc? is it chambered in 223 essentially but using the grendel case? the bullet does not look to be the same used in the 223 case as it is in the video. it looks to be longer but it could just be how the camera captured it. i know you can get 6mm in that same weight so i was just curious. great vid man. wildcat rounds are always something interesting to look into, especially in the ar platform
For some reason you think military is going to run into an area with a 20 inch barrel or greater. How does this round do in a short barrel? I believe this is what sold the guys on 6mm arc.
Always wondered why the DOD hasn't had engineers trying to make a reliable feeding, ruged 6.5, 6mm or 22 grendel. Could get much better terminal and external performance out of the AR15 platform for our soldiers over the 5.56.
What's your case capacity for that there? You know I like to play with QuickLOAD, even if it *isn't* the be-all, end-all, supreme authority of reloading!
@@EagleEyeShooting There's supposed to be some chemical in the RL17 to keep it from burning too fast and building too much pressure. The 6BR guys were getting 200 fps more, but that holds a lot more powder. I ran almost everything (for 6 ARC) past QL last weekend and 8208 XBR got only 2796 fps with the Hornady 105 grain BTHP without going over 62,000, and that was just average.
I’m new to the AR Game. Over the last 30 years I’ve had a lot of hunting rifles built on wildcat cartridges. What’s your thought on using a gas piston system for this round? I’m wayyyy interested in what your doing with this cartridge. Thank you
The mag follower would be the way to fix that. I run the Duramag 6.5 Grendel 26 rounders amd noticed that the rounds are angled upwards giving it a straight shot into the chamber. If you know anyone with a 3D printer, see if they can print you a follower with a raised front section
Interesting, been looking at something different for my next AR build. The 6 ARC is on the list but there are some issues as you stated. I don't reload so what about factory ammo in 22 Grendel?
Hey Eagle I’m considering a 22Gren or 6ARC in a bolt gun for f open with heavy pills ( I got a ppc action) do you think the 22 gren can hang a with 6BR, GT, ect. Use it for all ranges out to 600.
The 224 Valk does not fail on performance.. the Hornady brass life is bad.. but Starline is better. and if you know how to repair your primer pockets you can get more life out of your brass with annealing..
Opinions are awesome uh? I think many, not just me would agree. Repairing any primer pockets is not a good idea just to get more brass life. From expirence, starline does hold up better
22 Grendel will suffer similar issues to the 224. When you try to reduce the barrel length for a more compact DMR, the performance starts to wane very quickly and a 223 becomes a better choice. That being said, the shorter, fatter case manages some of this. The Grendel has diminishing returns past a 20” barrel but works wonderfully out to 800-1000 (altitude-dependent) down to a 12.0” barrel. The ARC’s accuracy across mass production parts seems questionable in an AR unless you find a way to properly reach 60,000psi. (I’ve made hits at 1300 yards with a Ruger American home build in 6ARC with factory 108s and works even better with handloads) If anything, the Grendel should be explored in the other direction bore wise, like a 6.8 or 7mm Grendel and brought as close to a 16”/18” barrel as possible, with some performance overlap much like a 338 Federal vs a .308 Win. I’m curious though if you know any manufacture who makes bolts that will take the 60,000 PSI like a JP Enhanced bolt.
I've thought about a 25 grendel as Im exploring the 25 Creedmoor. Thanks for sharing. I agree, from my 6 ARC factory barrel testing (27 barrels) accuracy has not been good unless it was a 18 or 20 inch rifle. I decided to take matters of the 6 ARC in the AR15 in my hands and designed a reamer with a shorten Freebore which now shoots factory ammo near half MOA. I offer these barrels at DPGunworks.com
This rifle in the video is contoured 1 inch- .936 back to .980" finished length of 22 inches. Using the WOA competition barrel extension. My bolt gun 6 ARC is 26.5" and has the exact same wind holds and elevation as this 22 grendel ar15. 105 gr Bergers at 2950 FPS
Are the ballistics that much better than what the 6.5 Grendel can produce with similar weight bullets? Sierra show 3060fps with an 85gr bullets and Hornady has over 2700fps with a 100grain bullet out of the 6.5. With availability of components being considerably easier to find I see the 22 Grendel as a non viable option. Definitely fun to chase perfection as a hobby though
Where comparing long range performance, and that 85gr 6.5 bullet will be no where near the same elevation hold as this 90 gr A Tip. As perspetive, this cartridge combination is only 7.5 MRAD at 1K. That 6.5 will be 10.6 MRAD.
So you've had this setup for a while, how many rounds have you put through it and have you broken a bolt yet? 22 arc is an official saami cartridge now, and your 22 grendel loads are pushing the 62k psi bolt gun only velocities, did the AR bolt hold up? If so, what bolt are you using.
@@EagleEyeShooting 22 arc is based off the 6 arc case as far as I'm aware. Either way capacity is roughly the same between them, has yours been holding up? I've long suspected that the milder gas gun loadings are the solution to the problem we don't have anymore, using milled out c158 bolts which are much weaker than the purpose made type 2 bolts we have today in 9310.
@@EagleEyeShooting I know they're not identical, however they do use the same bolt, and yours would have to be over the wimpy 52k the gas guns are loading on official loads, that's why I'm asking how your bolt has held up.
I have a pressure trace II system. The 22DPC holds 53K peak and has been firing 80gr SMK at 2930 FPS. I have about 3k rounds on my using a Aero precision BCG. No damages
Can you shoot 22 Grendel bullets with same or higher BC as 6mm ARC? If so, then I'm interested. What would be your 22 Grendel 1000 yard target bullet and what is the BC? Thanks.
I won't own a AR-15 with a barrel longer than 18", and you must be using some high pressure to launch a 90gr 22 cal faster than a 6.5 Grendel can launch the same weight
OK Bill Nye, arrogance with assumption is dangerous. To quote Mark twain, "Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."
no, because just like 6.5 grendel to 6 arc, lighter and faster is not always better. looks good on paper and against paper but not when shooting actual flesh.
🤙😄. I've built quite a few gai tigers this year. It's a awesome round. If you can find some Shooters World Precision powder or 6.5 Staball, I found it to work a lot better than the unicorn Varget powder. 109 Berger Hybrids

@PineyJustice I've developed the 22DPC before Hornady's 22 ARC (aka 22 grendel) the 22 DPC is based off the 6 arc case
No damages
The 22arc is based off the 6.5 grendel case FYI the 22DPC is based off the 22 PPC/ 6 arc case
What is twist ?

This is something I have been wanting to do for a few months
Nice video what speeds do you think you could get on top end with 55 grainers
Check out this video

Thx a bunch!
Why the 243 wssm isn’t more popular is a crime
I just watched this after about a year. I swear kenny just said right meow, hahaaha
Let’s see if anyone come over from who tee who’s 22 ARC rant?
So.. 22 ppc?
If it wasn't hard enough to find 6.5 grendel!
6 ARC is available
Dang dude. Get the ES dialed in and that sucker is gonna shoot. Looks like vertical is opening groups more than horizontal.
Yeah its definitely with the SD. Ill tune that in soon as I make a few more bushings to test neck tension
Nice!
Horna Day
Grin Dale
Graine d'elle.
6BR from AR10?
The 6 GT in an AR10 has been dominating PRS in my area. That might be a good option in that platform
Can you shoot 22 Grendel bullets with same or higher BC as 6mm ARC? If so, then I'm interested. What would be your 22 Grendel 1000 yard target bullet and what is the BC? Thanks.
Yes. 88 ELDs at 2930 FPS is .8 MRAD less than 6 ARC.
@@EagleEyeShooting Thanks. I was asking about the BC of the bullet independent of the firing solution. I'll look it up.
I want. I want.
I thought 6 arc was would be too short for this caliber?
It fire forms and expands 20 thousandths on the shoulder
Very nice
Never heard of the 22 Grendel.
Do you have an idea what the chamber pressures are?
Calculated 57K peak in QL. I haven't tested them with pressure trace yet. Trying to settle on a load
Dang…..I need one in a bolt gun 🤤
Very cool
I won't own a AR-15 with a barrel longer than 18", and you must be using some high pressure to launch a 90gr 22 cal faster than a 6.5 Grendel can launch the same weight
Assumptions
@@EagleEyeShooting you can't escape the physics
OK Bill Nye, arrogance with assumption is dangerous. To quote Mark twain, "Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."
Has to be an SD issue.
no, because just like 6.5 grendel to 6 arc, lighter and faster is not always better. looks good on paper and against paper but not when shooting actual flesh.
*22 ARC* 😁
6.5 grendel works for me.
"Gren-dell" lol
Mar-Tin 😄
If I hear him say Grin-dell once more I was going to stick an ice pick in my ears
2:01 🙂 Your Welcome
"I swear to God, I'll pistol whip the next guy that says 'shenanigans!"
@@EagleEyeShooting hahaha thanks I been debating a 22 Grin-dell for awhile. I'm about to finish my 6 Gee Ter
🤙😄. I've built quite a few gai tigers this year. It's a awesome round. If you can find some Shooters World Precision powder or 6.5 Staball, I found it to work a lot better than the unicorn Varget powder. 109 Berger Hybrids
@@EagleEyeShooting yeah I plan on Varget or h4350 depending. Maybe once I shoot my 6 ARC out I'll get a 22G
Call it the 22 arc before hornady can
Push a 70 gr speer semi point at around 3500 fps and I'll be impressed
FYI, it's not gren-DEL, it's pronounced "grendull", like the antagonist from Beowolf.
Dude its a joke..
Not much difference compared to the 22br
Better off with 22 creed. And I am not a Creed fan.
Cool. Let me know when that will fit in the lighter AR15 platform
Nice!!
