    The more people that get their hands on this camera, the more people will understand just how good it is. Plenty of room to complain about the lack of native lenses, but everything you need is there for creative photography - maybe just not "professional" photography. But, as a walk around and travel camera, the EOS-M series stays true to the original beneficial claims of mirrorless being smaller and lighter. All of it's lenses are extremely compact and the 11-22, 22, and 32mm are -in my opinion- essential lenses for this camera. I wish Canon had at least considered weather sealing on some of the lenses and bodies, however.

    • @snowwalker9999
      @snowwalker9999 4 роки тому +6

      Weather sealing plus a wide zoom lense (10-18mm) and a telephoto lens (55-250mm) both with constant aperture of at least f4, both IS and weather sealed. And, one 85mm f/1.8 prime (since Sigma has released 3 ef-m primes already). There is no reason why one could not take professional photos with Canon M series.

    • @tyroney2
      @tyroney2 4 роки тому +3

      Kevin DiOssi The lack of image stabilization in-camera (or in any of the Canon or 3rd party) primes would be a dealbreaker for me-especially given the really high MP sensor in this. The lack of an EVF and a standard f/2.8 zoom lens (and just a lack of lenses in general) make this not something I’d want to invest $1,000s of dollars in. Canon clearly wants you in the RF ecosystem if you need a fully capable camera system-which doesn’t make this camera seem like the revolution in thinking it’s purported to be here. Canon’s is always taking two steps forward and one step back. 🙄

      @@marknathan7744 you'll find how incredibly irrelevant that is when you actually take photos. A photo captured on a 32mp sensor versus a 24mp sensor will still look better when normalized. People act like a lens becomes useless on 32mp! LOL

      @@tyroney2 A gimbal would solve the need for IBIS. The EF-M was probably started as a part-time baby project to dabble and test the mirrorless market. The RF was their real serious attempt. If they had better foresight, they would have made RF-S system and RF. Just like what Sony and Nikon are doing. The right way. But the RF system is extremely anti-beginner friendly though. Not a single affordable budget lens at the moment.
      Still, this camera is a good upgrade for someone like me who's trying to move up from entry level DSLRs but can't afford a $10,000 full frame kit yet. Afterall it's just about $1200 with the adapter and you get access to all the pre-owned EF glass. No merit to buying native M glass imo. This system is probably deader than M43.

    What I really like about this review is that it gives a very real-world focused perspective on it.
    I really don't like the "no IBIS, literally unusable, canon sucks" attitude that some people seem to have nowadays, where it's more about comparing stats than actual usage.

      It's fine if UA-camrs want to tell us how they the miss in-body stabiliser, C-log and whatever, but I am sick and tired of hearing them complain as if the world had come to an end.

    • @tyroney2
      @tyroney2 4 роки тому

      A F IBIS is a feature that almost all photographers (who shoot more than one genre) rely on-especially on such a high MP crop sensor. Also, because Canon’s EF-M primes lack IS as well, getting sharp photos is made meaningfully more difficult for many. I’d hate to forgo an EVF, but that doesn’t make the camera “literally unusable.” Canon finally come out with a great sensor that beats out the competition in resolution, and they ignore a couple key features. It’s too bad, IMHO. They also have the same problem that Sony did for almost 8 long years... no f/2.8 standard zoom lens. Fuji is the only manufacturer that truly takes APS-C seriously (and even they have yet to offer IBIS in their top models). I’m sure this Canon would be fun to own, but it’d be hard to justify investing ~$2K in a system with these issues and not much expected lens support.

    Given the apparently killer IAF of the Sony a6400 ( not to mention the FF siblings), excellent to see Canon staying relevant to the camera market.
    Everyone differs in their shooting, but the IAF of this Canon , notably for people type shooting ( unlike Chris and his landscape penchant) is a huge appeal.

    I use the canon M6 since a couple of years for landscape and milky way photography and I do not miss the viewfinder. About lenses, third manufacturers are covering the void that Canon can not, like Rokinon ( 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 35mm and 50mm), Tamron (the all in one 18-200mm AF and stabilized) and Sigma with 16mm, 30mm and 56mm, 9 lenses for the m-mount, plus the native canon lens (7+9=16 options).

    i think canon has two audiences in mind, people who are pretty new to cameras and wont need super sofisticated technologies or lenses, or old stand by photographers that would just need an adapter to get their precious lenses on these cameras. so they have upgrades in new products but barely ever they are absolute beasts of high resolution, new technology and performance, as long as they keep consistent with their well known qualities, these audiences will stay glad of getting a canon camera every time... for the most part at least.
    this is just a guess of mine though...

    Canon's D+2 Highlight Tone Priority isn't double Highlight Tone Priority. It's not like Fuji's DR400. D+2 is still the same as D+, just with a slightly different tone mapping. The minimum Iso is still 200, not 400 in D+2 mode. By the way, the jpgs can capture a much higher dynamic range at the lowest contrast setting, which I combine with D+2. Canon's lower contrast settings are not like contrast settings from other cameras. You get far fewer blown out highlights with the lowest contrast setting. Therefore the lowest contrast setting also looks the best in my opinion. At the lowest contrast setting the results are more similar to the high dynamic range of Apple, Google cameras. The default contrast setting looks very unnatural.

    Most APS-C sensors like that of Sony, Nikon, Pentax, Fujifilm etc have an area of 370 mm² and a crop factor of 1.5X. However Canon APS-C sensors of dSLR and mirrorless cameras are a little smaller with a surface area of 330 mm² and a crop factor of 1.6X. The full frame sensors have an area of 860 mm². So a full frame sensor is 2.6 times larger than the Canon APS-C sensor (860/330mm²). A full frame sensor with the pixel density of the Canon EOS M6 Mark II would be 86.6 MP (2.6X32.5MP). Much more than the impressive full frame e-mount Sony α7r IV 60MP.

      ... and that is what Canon should really do, only full frame cameras in all price classes from the 200 dollar plasticky consumer model to the high-end and pro models, and then continue optimizing one of the best lens ranges in the market.
      I don't care if the camera is small, I believe a certain substance benefits me.

You will get way better images with less grain. Regarding the IS, the kittens has build in IS, but you have to turn the IS in the camera menu to on too for filming.

    The lack of lenses has sort of been the go-to dismissal for the M series, but what are we really lacking now? With the Sigma trio and the Canon 22mm, you have a great set of wideish to longish primes, and the zooms are decent enough for what they are: Affordable walkaround lenses for daylight use. I guess I might feel differently if I were a pro, but I've never quite understood the appeal of fast zooms. They are big, expensive and usually much slower than primes anyway. If I were recommending a camera to a beginner today, I'd definitely consider the EOS M50. Along with the Lumix GX80, I'd say it's the best choice in the price range. M6 though, I don't know. The X-T30 a very compelling camera, and the X-E3 is seriously cheap these days.

    Million dollar question and my big dilema:
    I cant choose. Help with arguments and reasons why are highly welcome. I dont do video, just images of landscape, travel and occasional macro. I dont care about which way screen tilts. All whats important to me is sharp, clean images with great dynamic range. Im not sure if its better to grab M6 mk2 body only with few lenses, OR M5 for a bargain price, actually almost 45% cheaper than M6 mk2. Will images on M6 mk2 be vastly better or less noisy than M5? Will it justify the almost double price now? Secondly, will the image quallity on them be better with EF-M or EF-S via adapter? I am into EF-M 11-22/EF-S 10-18 and EF-M 55-200/EF-S 55-250 and EF-M 28 macro/EF-S 35 macro. Which will do better quallity stills? EF-Ss are cheaper a bit too, but in case of a big image quallity difference, then price is not the important parameter. Thanks

There are however some great lenses out there that are now not so great with a 90D attached, and a red ring of L series doesn't offer you ant guarantees either. I'm taking pictures at hyperfocal settings that now have a visible DOF envelope. A lot of normals we have become familiar with like hand holding shooting speeds as a reciprocal of the focal length will need a rethink.

Other cameras like the X-S10 with it's fully articulating screen can fold in on itself which will self protect it as well as automatically turning the camera off when you do close it which is speedy and nice.

      Dominick To be honest first gen CDAF a7 cameras don’t compare to the AF in this Canon. They might both show a box but that’s where the similarities end.

      Tyler Breeden I have a sigma 35 and 135 as well and in good light it’s reliable. In the wide center af-c it’s not bad at all

    • @tyroney2
      @tyroney2 4 роки тому

      Dominick I’m not saying the AF in the a7 isn’t useful or reliable within its range of capabilities. I think the a7 is a great camera. I’d just have to say that its AF can’t really be compared to the current phase detect AF systems in most new mirrorless cameras. But-to the extent that matters for each person is very different. (I use far more manual focus glass on my a6300 and a7II, so bleeding edge AF performance isn’t a big deal to me either-even with AF glass.)

    Hi Chris, thank you for the great reviews. I have just bought an EOS M6 Mark 2 with the 15-45 Kit lense. My previous camera for years has been the 5D Mark 2 with the 24-105 F4 Lense.I want to upgrade my kit lense; I would appreciate your opinion on what will be a better choice when it comes to sharpness. The EF S 17-55 F2.8 V/S EM 18-150 F3.5-6.5. I realise that the zoom range are different, and the greater range will be better for travel, but I don’t mind sacrificing range for sharpness if it is more than marginal and a much greater improvement on the kit lense. Thank you.

Can't decide whether 22mm or 11-22 is better. 35mm appears to be great. Then 55-200 or the 18-150.? Thanks appreciate your feedback if you get time. Cheers Chris

    Hello everyone, can anyone please confirm: Initial AF pt set for tracking is not available on the M50 Mark 1 & 2 ? It's too sad that it seems like the Canon Cripple Hammer is real :( I would really like to use the M50 for sports action, but I can't find any useful AF setting. Touch and drag is just not realistically working in the field when you have quick moving action...my thumb is just not precise and not quick enough. Thanks !

    You forgot to mention "Touch AF"..?
    Which I heard of it quite useful.
    But you have to find an EVF to try it.
    I got an old one (EVF-DC1, which can tilt it's head, but short eye-relief, what a shame), but my camera body's an quite ol' M6, a 24MP one.
    And it doesn't have that mode.

    Should I buy a used one maybe?
    My budget is less than a thousand dollars.

    Merry Christmas Christopher !
    Sorry I am not an English speaker so what does « Longing for lenses » means ? I understand your point about that the EF-M lens doesn’t have a proper telephoto lens, but with the adaptor you can mount the cheap EF-S 55-250mm, it can do the work.
    I’m a big fan of the Canon’s mirrorless APS-C system, all the EF-M are cheap enough, and quite good.
    Have a good night.

    If you need to choose between your Sony A7r ii and this M6 ii? I know it's very different. But I though of upgrading my A5100 to the A7r ii. But the Canon cameras are becoming a good upgrade option.

    • @christopherfrost

  • @RealRaynedance

    I honestly wish Canon could just bolt an RF mount onto their APS-C cameras. Granted, it's easier for Sony to do it because the E mount isn't huge, but Nikon managed to fit their Z mount on the Z50.
    Then again, maybe they just haven't come up with any cheap enough lenses yet to warrant doing that.

    if its a lot sharper than a 24MP camera but a little noiser you can trade some sharpness for noise reduction ..however i think if you look at other 24MP cameras at the same viewing size nios will be comparable ..also when it comes to IBIS remember there is NO other APS-c MILC that has it at this price point ,and ,,only one top end Fuji and one top end sony

    M3 noisy image quality? I don't see any difference with the pictures in your video and the pictures I take with my M3 using the 22mm lens which is so much better than the 15-45. Slow autofocus? I use the touchscreen to focus and as soon as I've touched it it's focussed and makes the picture. What I don't like : the focussing is noisy! And with the 15-45 lens I hate the lock system, you have to unlock the lens before use, why?
