For anyone wondering, this is the exact video you're looking for when shopping for any lens. Thank you so much!
Wow, thanks!
@@markwiemels Of course, now it's just a waiting game to get off back order. I ended up getting the 11-22mm and the 55-200mm how do you feel about that pairing? I know I'm missing a small focal length but i feel the 55 is smoother than the 18
@@caelandelgiudice2661 I think it’s the most interesting of the focal length coverage. The really wide, and really telephoto, are shots that most phones can’t get. So working in those focal ranges is a point of difference. If I could only have two lenses, that setup would be in very strong contention. You can pick up the 15-45 or 18-55 on eBay for under $100.
@@markwiemels Very helpful thank you brother! I actually have the 15-45 kit lens and the 22mm pancake already, I feel like I'll be able to capture any moment
@@caelandelgiudice2661 That's a great light weight setup too.
I only own the M50 and have been trying to understand what would work well for my budget, this is what i really wanted to know and YOU delivered in a big way. Thank you for making this video for us.
Great to hear!
It is special when a video on youtube is so good you have to keep coming back to watch it over and over again !! Thanks for the content !!
Wow, thank you!
I recently picked up the 55-200mm lense and it is my favorite so far. I do a lot of wildlife photography and this has been such a help. I had picked it up after finding an osprey nest off of an old highway and I wasn't able to get close enough with the 15-45mm lense that came with my M200 to get a good shot of the osprey in it's nest. I still haven't caught it in it's nest since getting the lense but I keep going back every week to try. I've gotten many other great shots with it since I've been using it though. I love it.
Found this really useful. Just picked one up for video for my own channel. Nice to see the lens selection isn’t as small as I thought it was.
Great to hear!
So for the canon m50 mark ii is a smart choice to add on a canon 18-200mm w/ a viltrox speed booster? Or 55-200mm w/ the Viltrox speed booster? Would either lens quality be better? And is this a smart or do-able idea?
Thank you Mark. I have just bought a Canon M6 ii for use as a second camera and this is just what I have been looking for on lenses to use on it.
It's a super camera, I'm sure you will enjoy it.
Excellent vid. Loved your passion and knowledge! I followed along with my m6 and canon, sigma and rokinon lenses! And learned some great stuff too. Thanks!
By far the best EF-M camera lens review video ever made! Thank you!
Thank you for your kind words!
Hi! I'm writing from Italy.
I have bought a used Canon M5 to replece my Canon 7D mark I.
I usually used a Tamron 16-300: not a vary sharp lens (same quality of a kit lens but with a very impressive focal range).
Now I have discovered that Tamron 16-300 is not compatible with Canon M-series (and my flash Yongnuo YN568EX II too!!).
I have also other lenses: EF 50 f1.8 STM, EF-S 24 f2.8 pancake, Canon 18-135 STM and the EF-M 15-45.
I have two choises:
1) I could try to sell the Tamron and the Canon 18-135, then buy a sigma 17-50 f2.8 + a Canon 55-250 STM. I hope this set up improve the sharpness/quality of my picture and cover all the focal range.
2) Buy only a EF-M 32mm f1.4.
I'm not interested in video.
Surely I'm not a professional photographer, but neither a begginer! I shot in every situation: my family want me to shot at weddings and baptisms, but I love portraits and streetphotografy, landscape and nature.
Can you halp me?
I would do 1, would be a far more versatile setup.
Thank you for sharing your collection of lenses Mark, that was superb and informative. I don't quite have the number of lenses available to my M50 as you but I'm getting there. Instead of the Canon 32mm F1.4, for cost I chose the Sigma 30mm f1.4 as it was about 60% the price of the Canon. I also bought the Sigma 56mm f1.4 for portraits. I also own an SL3/250D so with an adapter I can use the EF/EF-S lenses that I have for my SL3 like the 10-18mm f4.5-5.6, EF-S 24mm f2.8 & Sigma 17-55mm OS f2.8 at a push.
Thanks! Yah, that sigma series of lenses is so good. The sigma 56 looks great for portraits.
Hey, are you happy with your 30mm 1.4, how is it with street photography and potrait?
Love all the shots of Melbourne, thanks for the EF-M content.
You are very welcome.
This is also a great buying guide for the Zv e10 with a mc11 adapter
New to the M50 and I think the 55-200 is my next purchase
I couldn’t find much info on the topic, you helped a lot. So thanks man! Appreciated!
Thanks, great to hear!
You rock for putting the links in the description!!
OMG Mark, I have to say you are an extraordinary person I have yet to see on UA-cam! I truly admire your enthusiasm and knowledge of these lenses. I am new to the photography and video and I wish I knew a person as yourself to mentor me in my journey of video and photography.
Hmmm that's actually a good thought! I wonder if anyone has put something on UA-cam like that? Mentoring a newbie via split zoom on UA-cam... Hmmmm, What's your take on that?
Thanks for all your kind words. That’s a super clever idea, for sure if I even go down that path, you will be at the front of the line. If I could only find more time in the day.
Love the idea of the fisheye lens. Can it be corrected to a rectangular image in lightroom or is there a better way?
Thank you very much!!! Most helpful video about these lenses I have seen!!!
Great to hear. Thanks.
One word: WOW! I will definitely come back to watch your channel. Unfortunately, I am looking for a Tamrom 55-200 test :)
Thank you so much!
Wow great video! I would also recommend the Sigma 56mm f1.4 efm lens. That thing is a beast with portraits. Gonna need the telephoto and maybe the Sigma kit lens. Does it need an adapter to work with the M6 II?
Yah that sigma 56 looks really good. Yes, you need an adapter for the Sigma 18-35mm. The M6 II is practically a cinema camera with that lens in it, the images are stunning.
I have the 28 makro and of course it is a very strange lense but yes it is a really cool lense. If u photograph small things like you do for stopp motion the depth of field is enough and its easy to handle ... smooth and as well for close nature takes as well. i love it
Yes! such a fun and unique lens.
@@markwiemels did u ever use a 7ARTISANS 50 mm F0.95 with ef-m Mount on your EOSM50?
Really great I see lots of great options for lenses with the M50. Love the look of your videos. What camera profile do you use to shoot video?
Thanks! I use neutral with +1 on the sharpness. Much of what you like is possibly the lighting, I have been meaning to do a video on how I light the studio shot.
amazing. Thank you for all of the jam packed video!
You are most welcome.
I am a newbie in photography and still trying to learn the tips and tricks. Thanks, Mark, for such a detailed video about the lenses. What do you think about Canon EF-S 55 to 250 mm F/4-5.6 and Canon EF 75-300 mm F/4-5.6 DC zoom lens. Which one do you recommend for long-distance photography and crispy clear pictures with image stabilization?
I have a classic car. I would like to take street pictures maybe pictures up a hill or the beach. Which lens would you recommend? 😄
Quite brilliant! I only regret I didn’t see it before I have bought my first lens))
You make a great videos
Easy to learn and understanding
Thanks.
Thank you for a very helpful video. On the Viltrox 23mm: it works on my M6 Mk1 but often shuts my M6 Mk2 down. I have updated the firmware on it via the Viltrox website, which was quite a process, but the problem persists. So I am disappointed by that one. I also own the Sigma 30mm and 56mm f1.4 which I bought as a set with the 16mm on discount. They are on par with the 16mm, viz superb. The 56mm takes absolutely marvelous portraits, and the 30mm killed my yearning for the Canon 32mm.
Sounds like you have great lens setup! I would contact Viltrox and try to get the lens replaced or repaired under warranty. I use the 23mm with my M6 Mark II, and it works well.
Hello I really love your videos. I am a new photographer and just got the mark II your video helped me narrow down what lenses I would like. I am having a hard time choosing between 18-150 and the 55-200
18-150 if you want one lens to do everything. 55-200 if you do more sports and stuff you need the extra reach, I think for most people the 18-150 is a great one lens solution.
@@markwiemels thank you! I do a lot landscape and starting to do street photography. I already have the 15-45 kit lens. So you suggest the 18-150 for those type of photography?
@@jaredhunter1676 yes, I would go with that.
@@markwiemelsthank you!
Great video! If you had to choose, which 3 lenses would you choose for general video purposes?
Canon 18-55 for an all arounder, Viltrox 23mm for low light (or canon 22mm, cheaper but not as good in low light). Then one more based on what your needs are, 16mm sigma (wide low light), 11-22mm canon (very wide with image stabilisation), or 55-200mm for telephoto.
Great overview-- fwiw I do a lot of environmental full-body portrait work and the Sigma 56mm 1.4 is my favorite for this. I've gotten some great moonshots with the 55-200.
Good advice, both great lenses.
IMHO the Canon EF 24-105 with the viltrox speed booster is the best combo 🤌🙌
I haven't tried that one, will have to try it one day, thanks for the insight.
@@markwiemels Happy to help! ☺️
Great video! I just got my M50 Mark II and I was wondering how you do night time time lapse shoots since the camera doesn't have an intervalometer?
I'm really into astrophotography and I mostly shoot with my 77D but I want to move completely to the EF-M system since I travel a lot
I rubber-band the shutter button down, and put it in continuous shooting mode.
@@markwiemels Great! Thanks for your quick reply.
Thank you so very much for such a great video!
the m100 or m200 with the 22mm is a real pocket camera and mb best size/result ratio on the market.
Yah, it’s more inline with the original eos-m camera size.
Mark: Great video for us M50 newbies. If you could only afford to buy one lens...The Canon 22mmF2 or the Viltrox 23mmF1.4 which would you chose?: I don't care about video to any great degree.
If size and price matters more the 22, if low light and blurry background matters more, the Viltrox. Both are great, you can not go wrong with either, so I would not fret too much about it.
@@markwiemels Thank you Mark.
Hi,
At 1st I used the Viltrox EF-M that seems the perfect copy of the Canon one (same factory ??) but had problems with it, expecialy with Canon EF 10-18 lens (Err. 60). So now I've got the K&F Concept adapter and it's perfect, no more problem.
I hate EF-M zoom lenses because of this f.... little button that lock the zoom.
Lol, a few people hate that switch. Ef-m 18-55 is switchless.
Interesting video! Some minor corrections... In your description you misspelled Rokinon. Also, you list both the Canon 40mm "pancake" and 50mm f/1.8 "thrifty fifty" as EF-M lenses. They are not. They are both EF-S lenses and require the adapter, as you correctly note in the video itself. You also might mention that there have been 3 versions of that 50mm and that the latest one with STM focus drive is easily the best.
Personally I bought an M5 last year, mostly for fun and wanted a minimalist, photography-only kit (no video, at least not yet... mostly street and some portraiture, may be travel). I shoot sporting events with 3 DSLRs and a large complement of lenses. The M5 and four prime lenses weigh in about the same as ONE of my DSLRs with grip and a moderate size lens. The whole M5 kit is about half the weight of my 500mm f/4 lens!
Lenses I'm using now are:
Meike 12mm f/2.8... $125 (Adorama open box). Surprisingly good lens! Well made, sharp, pretty well corrected, excellent color rendition. Also sells under Opteka name... same lens. Manual focus, manual aperture only, but those are no problem for me on an ultrawide lens. Besides, no one makes a prime this wide with AF in EF-M mount. (16mm Sigma isn't wide enuf for me... Plus it's big and heavy.)
Canon EF--M 22mm f/2... You described it well! Super compact, though I've added a 3rd party metal lens hood that nearly doubles it's size (the Canon 43mm hood for it is just silly small). For storage, the 3rd party hood stays on and is capped (55mm). I tried the Rokinon 21mm f/1.4 (also excellent), but that's strictly manual and really needed AF at this slightly wide focal length. I considered the Viltrox 23mm, but they only offer in silver... And for street photography I want a more unobtrusive black lens. I bought my 22mm refurb'd from Canon, on sale for about $150. The metal hood and cap for it cost me about $5.
Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DN... I used Sigma lenses years ago and wasn't impressed. Older ones weren't all that great and some of the more recent ones felt overbuilt... Unnecessarily big and heavy. But that's not the case here and the Sigma 56mm is simply stunning. In the same series as your 16mm, similarly superb image quality but MUCH smaller than the 16mm. In fact, the build quality, image quality and overall performance rival any Canon L-series or high end Nikkor ever made. This is another lens where I tried a manual focus option first but found I needed AF (the 1st lens I tried was the Kamlan 50mm f/1.1 II, another incredible lens I got for a bargain price from B&H as an open box). I need this lens for several things incl. portraiture that's sometimes paid work, and have no concerns about the Sigma being up to the task. I considered the similar Viltrox lens that costs less. But, again, it's only avail. in silver for EF-M mount. (Which actually might look great on an M6 Mk II chrome body, if not trying to go unnoticed.) I bought the Sigma 56mm "like new" ( even orig. box) off eBay for around $350.
An old Tamron 90mm Macro lens is my 4th and currently my longest lens. It's adapted (Adaptall2) and reasonably good, quite compact.... But I will probably end up replacing it because I feel need for AF here too. I bought this lens locally years ago for $20 and have adapted it for use on several different systems, but it's always going to be fully manual. I'm considering a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro or Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM to replace it, either of which will need to be adapted. That 100mm isn't a macro, so I have to decide which is more important... A fast telephoto or native 1:1 capability (I have macro extension tubes that can make the 100mm closer focusing... Oh, and I already have Canon EF 100mm Macro lens for use on my DSLRs, but it's too big and heavy for the M-series and my purposes).
That's it for lenses. These focal lengths are my personal preferences and closely match my "most used" lenses in other systems (allowing for 1.6X crop, where appropriate). I'm enjoying the lenses and M5 in general, though it's been oddly challenging trying to get accustomed to so much smaller and lighter a kit.
I hope I'm wrong but unfortunately I don't think we'll be seeing much more development of the M-series by Canon or anyone else. There are rumors of an APS-C Canon R-series in the works (Google "Canon R7"), which would probably signal the end of the M-series. It's got to be very inefficient to manufacture two different mirrorless systems that have no cross-compatibility to speak of, and the M-series have been treated like a stepchild by Canon throughout the system's 8 or 9 year history.
With the R-series it's just the opposite... A near total commitent of all Canon R&D resources as if the company's life depended upon it (maybe it does). Heck, in three short years Canon has developed 20 new RF lenses, many of which are premium and highly innovative designs. And there are 10 more RF lenses promised in the next year or so (including a couple that sound suspiciously like crop designs). In contrast, in over 8 years Canon has only developed a total of 8 lenses for the M-series. There are few AF capable 3rd party lenses, too.
Canon has already announced discontinuation of 24 EF and EF-S lenses for their DSLRs, along with no new DSLRs planned for the future. It's going to be a mirrorless future for Canon.... But it will be R-series mirrorless, not M-series.
This is a double edge sword. I suspect little new will come for M-series... But there will be some real bargains on some great little cameras, lenses and accessories that already exist within the system. Even if Canon announced a halt to M-series and EF-M production (which they won't do at least until there's an APS-C R-series to announce), it's not like our cameras will suddenly stop working! 😳 Besides, the under $1000 US I spent putting together an entire M series kit wouldn't have gotten me much in the R series! Maybe an RP body without any lens!
Thanks for the helpful and interesting video! I love the "skateboard" and its effect for video... It's so cool, I wish I could think of a use for it for still photography! 😊
Such good information here, thanks for sharing. I have updated the description of the lenses too, thanks for pointing that out, they are actually EF lenses, since they are full frame.
Looking for a good sharp lens for video not sure if I want the bulk and cost of the sigma 16mm what are your thoughts in the Rokinon 12mm as an alternative
Great useful video! Did you shoot your main video (in your studio) using a Canon M50 or M6?
That’s the M6 Mark II.
I chose to avoid using any adapters for my M50. Bought Sigma 17-35 f2.8, and it covers pretty much all the ranges I shoot of (planning on adding a telephoto soon though). However, the balance is so clunky that I rather swap primes than use it. This lens can be used well on a EF-S DSLR, but on M50, with an adapter it is just ridiculous. Thanks for the video. Would be really interesting to see how you shoot astro, as I struggle to find the right setting for it.
lol.Yes, the 18-35 Sigma on the M50 is absurd. I will try to do a video on M50 astro.
@@markwiemels he's talking about the old Sigma 17-35 2.8-4, which is much smaller than the 18-35. But the 18-35 is certainly the most unwieldy lens i own for this system. Heavy af (and i don't mean autofocus)! 😹
Hello Mark, I love your channel!! I have seen this video thousands of times, I think it is one of the best, if not the best Canon M series lens guide!!
I own the Canon M6 mark ii with the 22 f2, 32 f1.4, and also the adapter with the efs 50 f1.8 10-22 and 55-250 stm
I mainly do street and travel photography (cityscapes, architecture...).
I want to change that efs 10-22, which is a great lens but I find it quite bulky as I need to use the adapter. Therefore, I was wondering which is the best wide angle lens that would replace the 10-22 for that travel purpose. I thought about the 11-22 as I think it gives a similar image quality while being muuuuch smaller. But maybe there is another zoom or prime lens that you think is even a better option for travelling.
Thank you so much, keep up that fantastic work!! 🙌🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
11-22 or 18-150 would be my pick.
@@markwiemels thanks! I finally decided for the 11-22 and I don't regret it, it is a fantastic lens 😍
What lens would you suggest for concerts with low light also able to zoom???
This is the big hole in that EF-M line up, I would look at adapting an EF lens, 24-70 f 2.8 could be good, 70-200, or 24-105, but you really need to work out what zoom range you need for the shooting you are doing. Try to get a lens with an f2.8 aperture.
Great job Mark! I have used most of the EF-M lenses from cannon, but I still don't own any. I have the Sigma 18-35 and some EF-S glass. I find myself in limbo trying to figure out what if anything I am going to do with my M6 Mark II and the lenses I currently have. As you know I recently purchased the R5, R6, and some EF and RF glass. I look at my gear and wounder if I should start to sell or just keep the 3 bodies and utilize them in my videos. I went out to shoot a birding video with the new Tragopan photo hide and OMG...it's a totally different skill set to shoot that kind of video. It was fun, but disastrous.
Well I think based on the fact that wildlife shooters seem to keep a cropped body and full frame, doesn't it make sense to keep the M6 as the cropped body? I hope you are going to make a video on the hide, I think we often don't make videos when things don't got to plan, but these are often the mosts interesting videos!
From all the lenses of this list, which is the top3-4 you would keep, I got curious. I think I'll go Sigma 16mm, Canon 22mm (or maybe Canon 32 mm)
For more general use Prime lenses, I like the Sigma 16mm (mainly for video), the Viltrox 23mm or the Canon 22mm (good for both photo and video), and the Canon 32mm (best ef-m photo lens).
This video has been really helpful and informative for me and I made a couple of purchases off the back of it. I've also just ordered the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM and the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 DC OS HSM for landscape photography on my M50 mkII. I would be interested to know if you (or any of the community here) has had any experience with these lenses on the M50 (particulary for landscape photography)?. On paper they seem like solid choices, so I'm hoping they will give good results. I opted for the Canon EF-S lens over the wide angle EF-M equivalent, as I got a new copy for a good price. I'm hoping the Sigma lens will be a solid upgrade over the kit lens with some additional zoom.
Both good lens options. I would also look at getting a telephoto lens for landscape. It may seem counterintuitive, but some of the best landscape shots are taken with telephoto lenses. Lots of good YT videos on the subject.
@@markwiemels Thanks Mark, yeah I'm looking at getting the EF-M 55-200mm lens as my next lens purchase. Definitely going to take advantage of the EF-M mount for the telephoto purposes.
What do you think of sigma 17-50 f2.8?
What about the sigma 18-250mm zoom lens. Is it any good on canon?
Hello Mark ! I want to buy a budget friendly all around camera and lenses, for like - vlogging, portraits, landscape and other general shots. Which camera and lens do you suggest ? Hope you will reply!
M50 is great, best budget camera in my opinion. M6 Mark II is better, but more money.
If I were to shoot music videos, which of these lenses would you prefer to use? I'm also a beginner
Viltrox 23mm or the Canon 22mm
best efm lens review i have ever seen
Thanks!
Great Video Mark, what’s your recommendation on Food or Drink photography? Is there a EF-M lens that do the work or should use the adapter with the Canon EF-100mm macro lens?
Greetings from Mexico 🙏🏼
Start with the kit lens, and work out what focal length you prefer. Check out the start of my best prime lens video. I have done high end product photography with the kit lens, its good enough that it won't hold you back.
@@markwiemels thanks for your reply Mark, I have the kit lens and the 22mm I’m doing some experimentation on that. It’s good to know that with proper lighting and practice I can work with that. Thanks
Have you tried a speed booster with the 40mm
Yes, I really like it.
Hey, I’m trying to decide which second lens to buy between the Sigma 56 and the Canon 32, both seem to be similar in price and both seem to fit my needs like close up shots and candid photos of my wife and kids. Which one would you go with as a second lens to put with the kit lens for the m50?
You want the 32mm for sure, it’s a more versatile focal length for those purposes. It’s also one of the highest quality lenses I have ever used on any camera system.
@@markwiemels say no more, I’m sold. Totally appreciate the response. Just subbed also, your video was the best breakdown of lenses I’ve seen so far.
@@stevenmathews6590 Thanks, you won't regret the purchase, the 32mm is widely consider the best lens on this mount.
Very helpful, and sage advice Mark. Hopefully, Canon will continue to support and perhaps increase the M mount line. My m6 mark ii is the most versatile camera I have, and it takes surprisingly great photos and videos. Being a little older now, I really don't feel like carrying around the 5D mark 3 with battery grip, or any of my other full-frame cameras. In sum, the M mount cameras fill a unique video/photo niche. It would be great if Canon would continue to improve this line; maybe an M6 Mark 3??? Thanks so much for continuing to produce informative, reliable videos about the M mount cameras and lenses.
Thanks! I also love the size to results ration the M6 II provides, I think it's a top class camera. It will be interesting to see what Canon does with the M series, more recent rumours have been that there is a new high end body in the development pipeline.
@@markwiemels that's great Mark, especially in light of the earlier suggestions that they were going to kill the M mount line
I have the Canon M50. What would you recommend for remote shutter? Want to do Timelapse Astro. Thanks.
My dirty secret is that i just rubber-band the shutter button down, so I have not done the research on this.
Hey Mark thanks...can I use this on Canon M50 mkii?
Very informative for a newcomer to photography . These lenses can be used for the Eos m 5 Correct?
Yes.
Amazing video
New travel lifestyle Vlogger question! Before watching this I assumed a 35mm was what most used to vlog. I love the idea of your love for the 11-22 but also the night views from the viltrox 23 1.4 was beautiful! I have a cannon 50mm 1.4 and the 18-55 kit lens (cannon ) already. For vlogging, would you suggest adding either the 11-22 or Viltrox 23 1.4 to my collection or is what I have sufficient for vlogging? (If to add, please suggest which one of the two) thank you!
hmmm... Hard one... probably go with the 11-22. Right now, the widest you have is 18mm, which isn't ideal for walk and talk style vlogging (if thats what you do). Longer term the 11-22, 18-55, and 23mm viltrox would be a great setup.
Thank you!
@Mark Wiemels Helllo Sir, I discovered this video a short while ago and really enjoy it. It seems that you really know what you are talking about and I`m a kinda new to this hobby. I own a EOS M50 as my first camera and i like taking pictures of small scale miniatures. I take pictures with good lights and with a tripod etc... my motives are usually pretty small around 2cm - max 30 cm ~ (1 -12 inch).
I strugle with the 15-45mm kit lens... the depth of field or general sharpness in my photos could be better...
Can you recommend a lens that could step up my game ?... i dont want to f up xD - thanks mate
EF 22mm 2.0 / Viltrox speed booster + EF lenes FTW
Good Setup!
You tried the 17-55 f2.8 ef s canon?
No, sorry, I have not.
Nice I like that skateboard idea
Yeah, it's pretty cool! - geni.us/P1WCjF
Thank you for the video :)
Is there a way to check if the copy of the lens is not very good? You mentioned that you had a copy of the 11-22mm lens that wasn't very good.
I am thinking of buying a second hand 11-22mm :)
Just take some photos with it and compare them to sample photos and reviews online.
How about sigma 17-50 f2.8 ?
Hi Mark..thank you for your videos. I really like them. Have you ever tried the Laowa 9 mm. F 2.8 Zero D lens? If yes, what do you think about it. Thank you for your answer. Greetings from Italy
Hi, yes I have used that lens, but the copy I used was very soft and gave mildly blurry images. I have seen other reviews of this lens and their copies appeared to be excellent and very sharp. I think this is an amazing lens, just make sure you get a good, sharp, copy.
Why won’t my sigma 18-35mm fit on my canon m50 😩😩😩
You need the adapter, it's linked in the description here.
I searched to find this video because you were the first person that said the Viltrox 23mm is your favorite lens. I came back to double check. Is it that much better than the Canon 22mm f/2? I carry the Canon around with me because it's so tiny and it's pretty decent. If I got the Viltrox I'd have to rethink what I put in my sling. I wish Viltrox would make a 16mm that was smaller than Sigmas very large 16mm.
If you already have the Canon 22mm, I wouldn't buy the Viltrox 23mm, that money would be better spend on a different focal length. The 22f2 is a fantastic lens, I also love it for its size and image quality. The Sigma 16mm is big, but it's a very good lens. I often carry the Sigma 16mm and the Canon 22mm, as a two lens combo. The Sigma 56, or Viltrox 56 are worth looking at for portrait too.
@@markwiemels Thanks I have the Sigma 56mm as well as the Canon 32mm. Both are great lenses. I'd like to have something wide that's fast but it seems the Sigma 16mm is it. It's too big for my bag currently.
I wonder if you can demo something: Tony Northrup was explaining that the crop factor has to be multiplied on the fstop of an adapted lens - that would mean the EF 50mm f1.8 on a non-speed booster would be like 80mm f2.8 - if that's true the EFM 22mm f2 is actually a faster lens? Is that true? I mean, I guess I believe it based on facts but would love to see it!
Not like I'm making chores for you, might actually be interesting content haha
No, this is a REALLY good suggestion, thank you.
Rad! The Tony N video talking about the multiplication of f-stop is a 20 questions one, il try to find it. In many other videos (like the next link) it sounds like it's nit multiplied, unless the speed booster is actually speeding up more than one stop to be "one stop faster than labelled". Not picking on this UA-camr, his stuff is great ua-cam.com/video/bJ9Jdh0MSCo/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/IsWGkUT5A_Y/v-deo.html
Thanks for considering this, the information on UA-cam can seem contradictory, but ultimately most of us learn by doing / demonstrations rather than abstractly talking about the science behind it without complete depth!
What are your thoughts on 7Artisans 35mm f 1.2
Have not used it, but I know they make some great lenses for the money.
I want to get a sigma 16mm f1.4 but does that require a ND lens filter? 🙏 thanks
No
Ok, I have the TTArtisan lens for M50 MkII and I can’t get this thing to work!
Setting in the menu system, I'm sure you have worked it out by now. Shutter without lens attached.
Do you need a lens adapter for the Meike fish eye ? It says it’s made for Sony on Amazon
No, when they are out of stock of the canon version they will sometimes send you to the Sony version, which wont work on the canon mount, there is no adapter.
Guys if these lenses require adapters to work on any of the EOS M cameras then they're not native EF-M lenses. Native EF-M lenses go straight unto the EOS - M cameras.
i try the viltrox len.. thats amazing len. affordable.. sigma is sharper but the 16mm is too heavy.... i have the 16mm and 30mm from sigma... I think it worth to own sigma trio. thats cover al focal length.
The Sigma trio is great! I think the 23mm f1.4 Viltrox fills a hole in the Sigma trio lineup.
I'm planning on buying a helios 44-2 lens to use on my cannon eos m50. Will I need an adpater from m42 to EF and then EF to EF-M? Or an adapter from m42 to EF-M is sufficient?
just m42 to ef-m.
Hi, i want to use the Desview t3 teleprompter with the canon m6 mark ii, which lens do you advice (with shallow depth of field), I have the EF-M 22mm f/2, but I cannot mount the desview t3 on that lens, or is there another solution to use the desview t3 with the EF-M 22mm f/2? thanks
Hi Mark, a fan here from PH. I love the sigma 16mm and 30mm but it kinda annoys me every time I switch lens do you to think swapping them with the 18-35mm will solve my problem or should i stick with the two lens and just buy another body for the other one?
18-35 will fix this, but it's huge, the image quality is better on the 18-35 though.
u talking about canon m50 but the links lead to sony mounts???
Amazon automatically sends you to other listings, when the ones I have used are sold out, it is annoying. What country are you in, and what specific lens, or lenses links, sent you to the Sony listing? Let me know and I will make sure they are correct on this end.
Are you sure the Canon EF-M 55-200mm is better than the Canon EF-S 55-250 mm IS STM? Thanks
In all my testing yes, but I have seen others say the opposite. I did test chart shots and all, this could be variations in the specific lenses, so I am only sharing my own experience.
@@markwiemels Thanks, I hope the EF-S 55-250 MM IS STM will fit in my M50 Mark II albeit with an adapter
Hi, which lens would you recommend for shooting action shots (video only) in a 2 car garage space with a fixed camera/tripod position? Thank you.
Kit lens would be good for this, what you will need is lots of light for this setup. The lighting will be much more important than the lens. If you did want a lens upgrade, I would probably say the Sigma 16mm.
@@markwiemels I have been looking at Godox video light so I will make sure to grab a couple of those. Seeing that I still have enough budget, might as well get a Sigma 16mm. Thank you for the recommendation.
how about sigma 18 55 f 2.8?
Sorry, I don't have any experience with that lens, but I am a big fan of Sigma lenses overall.
The sigma 16mm, and the 56mm. Or the EOS R line up. More money, way better
EOS R is a great camera system, but your'e right it's a whole different world on price. Having said that, the M6 Mark II with the right lens is better then the EOS-R and RP in a number of situations.
Hi I bought M6 mark II that comes with EF-M 18-150mm which is not inside your list. may i know what is your view for this lens? also just wanna consult you, for travelling where you will take landscape and street photography and also those like building shots, in view of portability and weight, which few lens would you recommend?
Great lens! highly regarded by many, just not one I own. It would be my pick for a do it all travel lens for sure.
you have mentioned this one adapter several times but never say the name of it, where to get it, and the cost. Please inform for the canon eos m50 thanks.
Sorry about that. It’s in the links, in the description.
Thanks ordered it today!!
Have you tried the Canon EF 24-105mm with the viltrox speedbooster? If so what did you think?
No, sorry. I like the speed booster, but be aware that you do lose some sharpness and detail in exchange for better low light and shallow depth of field (blurry back ground).
@@markwiemels Thanks for the reponse. Perhaps I'll go with the EF-M 18-150 instead.
Muy buen video! Gracias!
You are most welcome!
Hey (it’s me again) Do you have an opinion of the Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 as a alternative zoom lense for the 18-35?
I haven’t used the 17-50, the obvious trade off off is, you get more focal rage but poorer low light performance and blurry background. The 18-35 is widely consider the best aps-c lens ever made, I don’t hear the same comments on the 17-50.
Thank you
You are most welcome.
The first lense on the list is not that cheap, it's €190?
It really depends on your country and what’s in stock. Shop around, you might find a better deal.
There are 16 lenses for the EF-M mount? I only have six plus nifty fifty.
Better get a move on then :-) 6 is more than enough.
Does the very first lens you showed fit automatically with the canon m50? It says in the amazon link thats its for sony cameras
Looks like they are out of stock. Normally it would give you a list of lens mount options. I fear they will stop making/selling this lens, it has never sold well, and is super cheap. Hardly anyone knows about it. Have a look around, it is sold as a Meike and optika, you may be able to find it online somewhere else.
But can I use this lenses with the canon eos rebel t1i
You need EF and EF-S mount. There are a few EF and EF-S mount in this video, but most are EF-M
Soupah beta. Ty! 👏👏👏
Its all about bokeh and wider lenses, now what do you recomend?
By default, wider lenses have less background blur. Sigma 16mm is wide with some blur, Viltrox 23mm is medium wide with more blur.
@@markwiemels I see what you mean, so in the end full frame is the way to go cause the cheaper blur options require the subject to be more less closer and cropped sensors show less of that blur
How about the Tamron 18-200mm Di III VC?
I owned that lens, wish I still owned it actually. It was unbelievably sharp for that crazy zoom range, the big problem for me was the autofocus in video was effectively unusable, it jumped all over the place. It was fine for photo. Back when I owned it, I only shot video, but I shoot a lot more photo now and wish I still had that lens. I think as long as you only shoot photo, it’s an amazing lens, and I would recommend it.
Hi, do you have recommendations of cheap gimbal I can use with canon m50 that can handle even if I equiped it with big lenses such as 17-50mm lenses? I'm looking into dji ronin sc or zhiyun crane m2. Would any of those work?
Both will work, also look at the Weebill S
Thanks sharing sir
Most welcome
