Christopher do you know which lenses will use the full potential of the MP sensor for this camera? I'm thinking of the 35mm sigma art but open to recommendations
Especially when Jordan crawl and cry like a baby on the ground. Honestly I don't really care about cameras, what I like to watch is these guys introducing gears.
The review makes me very happy that I just bought an A6400. It comes the closest to ticking all the boxes for me, especially in terms of video capability. I wish Canon would have kept the 24MP sensor and instead focused on some of the deficiencies highlighted in this video. I really like using Canon cameras, but as @CameraConspiracies would say, the Canon Cripple Hammer is in full swing here.
One of the reasons I bought this camera is the ergonomics and ease of use you mentioned. Sony Alphas may have better video capabilities, but M6 Mark II seemed like a more complete and convenient option for me
I usually shoot with an EVF on my Olympus Pen E-PM1, and I love the fact that it tilts for low angle shots. I know most people wouldn't care much about it, but for a rangefinder style camera, I find it essential.
Yeah, tilting EVF is very nice indeed! Surely more fragile, but can be truly useful. I really like it for low angle shots (which itself is often quite refreshing change to usual), but also sometimes when working with a tripod. I go in weird angles with the ballhead and tilting EVF can save the day. Good stuff!
Interestingly though, the Canon EVF-DC2 doesn’t have a tilt facility. The larger, earlier EVF-DC1 does and it is probably compatible (both units have been compatible with previous Canons that take an accessory EVF).
about lenses: Sigma announced it will be releasing ef-m trio, most importantly 16mm f1.4 and 56mm f1.4, combined with EF-M 32mm f1.4 and ef-m 22mm f2 - efm prime lens offering will be great value. Fast zooms for the tiny m6 is overkill way too costly (r&d investment)- adapting existing ef-s alternatives through m mount adapter makes more sense (gonna be huge anyway).
Great review! I would love to hear/see a comparison from you between the M6 mkii and the M50, as one might argue that for instance the added resolution of the former is pointless until further developments on the lens front 😛
What a great review. I got the M6 Mk II in January 2020. I knew this would be the EF-M swan song, and I have no regrets. The final native lens, the 32mm is one of the best lenses ever made.
Great review. Your reviews look gorgeous and flow smoothly. How hard is it to make the review look like you are just talking about the product to a friend? I'd love to see a detailed behind-the-scenes video of your process in making these reviews. For example, how do you outline the review? Do you write a script, pick bullet points or do the dialog off-the-cuff? Do you have a crew or is it just the two of you? On this partly indoor shoot, do you use lighting? What is post like. Who edits it? Thanks for making these reviews such a pleasure to watch.
I'd love to do a BTS episode in the future! After spending some time with the camera, we do a short bullet-point outline of information that needs to be covered, then Chris and I spend a meal arguing over what our opinions are. We rarely have a crew, except for our Wooden Niccolls episodes. We use small lights when necessary, either a LumaHawk Shadowless 300 Round LED, or an Aputure COB 300D. Chris edits his Raw files, and sends them off to me, and I edit the episodes. Full length reviews are generally two days of post, and shorts are a day. Hope this gives you a bit of insight into our process, thanks for the kind words!
Great I really love this camera I agree on what you pointed out on pros and cons, bought this camera after watching some reviews and this is the one of the videos that pushed me to buy this camera over other competition. I also made an unboxing on m6 mark ii and its great! Btw. 24 is now available!
I'm going on 200 hours of camera reviews now and every single camera has serious drawbacks. None of the cameras are good unless you spend $5500. It's really depressing.
Interesting review! Excluding the kit lens, I never would have considered lenses not being up to the task. I'm using Canon's ef adapter on my M50 and don't care for the wiggle in the mount.
A question for Jordan: For "4K" 30 fps, what kind of bitrates did you guys find (highest and typical)? Also, with Canon's announcement that 24fps will come in early next year, it will be interesting to see of "4K" 24 fps gives better files. I am looking forward to multi-camera "Crop Frame" comparisons.
Nice review guys and you beat me to it! I actually thought rolling shutter in video was pretty well controlled in my tests, but then I'd been using the A6400 previously. I also agree about the lenses - the 15-45mm is definitely not good enough, although i do like having that wider than average coverage at the short-end. x
doogieham Chris talked about this on the video. Resolving more than 24MP on an APS-C sensor is very difficult-and it’s perhaps the main reason APS-C has remained at 24MP for so long on so many cameras. Recently Fujifilm moved all the way up to 26MP, and Samsung swing for the fences with 28MP back in the day. I think 32 is overkill (almost as much as 80MP on FF will be).
Gordon Laing The rolling shutter should be better in video since Canon isn’t supersampling their footage from 6K to 4K, but is instead using good ol’ 2012-era line skipping, and it’s soft image quality. Also, 15mm on an EF-S sensor is like 16mm on other brands’ APS-C cameras (like Sony and Fuji, the latter of which *does* have a true 15mm zoom kit lens).
Great review, guys. Interesting what you're saying about most of the current lenses not being up to the resolution of the sensor. Canon are finally getting their sensor & focusing games together. Their AF has been great for years, but needed some improvement. The BSI stacked sensor with IBIS they have in development (they filed patents last year and again this year) will probably be amazing. They also filed a patent for quad-pixel AF. Nice intro too! 🙂
The lack of a flip-out screen makes it a rather bad vlogging camera. The tilt screen it has is completely useless if you want to use a shoe-mounted external microphone and have it on a tripod.
@@АлексейНовиков-у6ф6б I have a very important question, please answer quickly with regard to the microphone. Is it possible to connect the microphone Rode to this camera or not compatible with it? I want to use a wireless microphone Thanks for your understanding
But you start to trade weight for performance and at that point why not go for the RF system, seeing as you are going into a price range that's obviously higher than this intended market? Mirrorless doesn't just mean more compact bodies, it also means great quality lenses that can be smaller. See for example Sony's new 35 1.4 and 20 1.8. Also Nikon's doing a great job with these.
I still want to see an M5 MK II. Give it the same sensor/processor as on this one, built in EVF and joystick of the MK I, fully articulated screen and weather sealing comparable to the x0D line. Then just have to wait for the lenses to catch up.
@@Raychristofer Best not to say anything here. The facts can be seen - at least at the moment I write this - in Wikipedia under Money for Nothing - the song.
Every EF and EFS Lens I tested on the Canon EOS 6M mark 2 is sharper than the lenses that come with this camera. So I advise everybody to buy the original canon adapter and use your old lenses. You will get way better images with less grain. Regarding the IS, the kittens has build in IS, but you have to turn the IS in the camera menu to on too for filming.
It just means that you wont get the "full 32mp" out of the image. i mean you will get 32mp photo. but the lense would not be able to show all the sharpness details that the sensor is capable of. it doesnt mean that the lens gets worse, it just doesnt get much better than on other M bodies.
Oh my god, maybe 12p or even 6p would be even "more cinematic"? I predict 60p as the soon to come "bare minimum", and a standard. Gaming monitors have even 144 Hz refresh rate, because... slower frame rates are visible to human eyes.
So the EOS M6 Mk2 has a UHS-II slot, differentiating it from cameras like the A6400 and GX9 that are stuck with an older UHS-I card interface. You mention that this Canon is slow to clear buffer, but is it as slow as the Sony?
@@niccollsvideo Thanks, Chris! Are you allowed to say if you're going to do a new generation midrange APS-C shootout between the M6ii, A6400, and X-T30?
I have looked for an explanation as to why people like 24p over something mathematically simpler to use like 30p and I cannot find anything beyond "they use it for movies/broadcast." Can someone help me understand? I would think you'd get more detail and less blur with 30p. On top of that we aren't filming for movies OR broadcast anyway.
In terms of sharpness and detail which one would you recommend me to buy, iPhone 12/13 Pro Max or Canon M6 Mark II? And my second question would be if Canon M6 Mark II can compete with iPhone 12/13 Pro Max in nnight and low light situations? Thanks in advance for your response.
I am also thinking about getting that camera after the new firmware. I heard the new software has turned that camera into a great video cam. Watch Peter Forsgard, Red35 Photography and Kinotika's review on that.
A bit of a narrow topic, but I've got that camera so I'd love to hear what JD thinks of FW3.1 too. Especially if he has some tips for getting the most out of it - which, of course, he will.
Would this be good for a beginner? I am deciding on this or the Sony a6400. I will most likely be doing photography more than video. Pics of the city life and animals.
BTW you can also connect EF lenses via a 3rd party focal reducer, which can make for some interesting focal length/aperture numbers (interesting for video too). IMHO Canon should make a first-party one. Oh and the World is short on zoom lenses that look as good as good primes, especially at kit lens prices. They should also turn out a higher-MP EVF option at some point - one of the advantages of it being modular. Provided they have the in-camera stuff to support that. It wouldn't suit me, but for a lot of people the approachability is good. Also worth a test with a 400/2.8 to see how much more detail you get than a 5Dsr/5DIV/etc... Way cheaper than getting a 600...
Thanks a lot for a very detailed informative video. 😊 Have you tried with the EF-M 11-22mm f4-5.6 lens? Though smaller maximum aperture it usually gave very high quality images with 24 mega pixel sensors. Please also try the EF-M 22 mm f2 for real how it really perform with the new sensor.
One thing I would like to know: Does the M6 Mark II turn off the auto exposure bracketing (AEB) as soon as anything is inserted into the hot shoe (e.g. like the view finder seen in this video)? The M6 Mark I unfortunately does that, it has a tiny switch under one of the metal flaps inside the hot shoe mount. This makes it impossible to shoot AEB with even a simple trigger, like you can on the 6D and other Canons.
I have a m100, still rockin it to this day. Contemplating buying the 32mm lense. What does everyone think? I would rather keep the m100 body after seeing this video.
Mad English TV because not a lot of people watch all the reviews and rumors about the future of a system. They know canon they buy canon. Also if the consumers support the system I am confident canon will also do.
@@professionalpotato4764 They didn't make more lenses because they figured most people who run this type of camera are not "professionals". Aside from that, I am not sure why anyone cares about the number of lenses so much when there are good EF lenses you can adapt to this system. The Canon 100mm F2.8 'L' macro works perfectly for me with the stupidly expensive adaptor. Yes, you are losing light, but just buy a good lighting system. The EF-S lenses that they speak of ARE designed for crop sensor cameras, but are not as tack sharp, and this sensor NEEDS tack sharp.
The way reviewers treat this issue...especially DxO...is a pet peeve of mine. Lenses do not "cap" sensors (or vice versa). Final resolution of an imaging system is always going to be less than the weakest component, but improving ANY component improves the final result. Note that this is not an opinion, it's scientifically demonstrated and the formula for computing it can be found online. What does this mean in the real world? In the case of a M6 II the final image using a 15-45 zoom may not be as good as when using, say, a Sigma ART lens. But it will be better than the 15-45 on the old M6. So if you were happy with prints from the old M6 and 15-45 you are not going to be disappointed with the same lens on this new camera.
I noticed there is no mention of Electronic First Curtain Shutter usage....I need that info. Reason being, and THANK YOU for mentioning the shutter slap potential issue. It's actually a HUGE item to consider with these high megapixel bodies. I've been banging this drum for months since I've been experiencing odd focus issues with a new M50. My feeling is the body is just too light.
Han He The M6 Mk2 does in fact have EFCS. It's in one of these reviews around here (panning issues). Also, I saw it in action at photoplus. All good. The panning stuff sucks but it's better than only relying on the shutter. these bodies are no longer made of metal, so if your lenses is too light, it will be blurry pics everywhere. M50 suffers from this greatly
Which camera would you recommend to a person that needs these criteria? - good autofocus. - can get a variety of lens w/ affordable price. - affordable accessories. - nice picture color. - can shoot 4K. - High-quality picture. - can shoot slow motion. - time-lapse.
Great review - as a primarily Canon 5dMarkIV shooter, all I want is a decent alternative when I want to travel and not take a huge kit, so it looks like this camera with a 50mm equivalent prime would fit that niche perfectly.
Great video. Thanks. My A6400 is still within the return window. The sigma primes are massive except for the 56mm. Does the Canon M mount have better small primes than Sony. How does Sony 35 OSS compare with Canon 32 and the Sony 24 f1.8 vs Canon 22mm f2??? I just need those two focal lengths and need the camera to compact. Thanks.

Releasing a brand new Body to a system wich isn´t supported with lenses from it´s own manufacturer for years. Canon, what where you thinking. Why are no lens announcements for the EOS-M? I left this system because the lack of lenses.
Regarding the shutter, would you say that this can be a problem with long time exposures? Is the EVF better than the M5? Great review, thanks for the impressions.
I have a very important question, please answer quickly with regard to the microphone. Is it possible to connect the microphone Rode to this camera or not compatible with it? I want to use a wireless microphone Thanks for your understanding
Great! I've got a question. What kind of adapter do I have to use for M42 lenses? I tried a number of them. It says "No lens attached". On the flip side with 5D mark iii simplest adapters work no questions asked.
Nice camera (I have one), but I'm not finding the dial function to be an improvement over a dedicated exposure compensation dial on the M6. It would be less fiddly if you could cycle through its options via repeated presses on the button. And how come it you dedicate it in the menu to exposure compensation you have to press the button before turning the dial does anything? I find that a needless extra step. I do like that the EVF is removable and you can still use the first EVF that tilts up. And how come Chris always looks too lightly dressed for the weather?
Again it appears that only dpreview are saying this replaces both the M6 and the M5, yet Canon UK WILL NOT confirm this when asked... has anyone actual seen an official statement from Canon regarding this??
Love you guys. You have taught me a great deal about photography and film making. I’m looking for the best mirrorless or dslr for around $1200 (body only) to record my nieces. One is a gymnast and the other does local community theater. I will be purchasing a 70-200mm f2.8 lens for whatever body I choose as well. I’m looking for eye autofocus that functions in 4k. Very helpful review, even now in 2024 under consideration for a second-hand M6ii. Many thanks!
5:50 have you had a few wobbly pops by this point or is it just the audio that is that much different lol
Can we get a Jordan video focused review of the omd em1 mk2 after the 3.1 firmware adding phase detect af to the video?
I am also thinking about getting that camera after the new firmware. I heard the new software has turned that camera into a great video cam. Watch Peter Forsgard, Red35 Photography and Kinotika's review on that.
A bit of a narrow topic, but I've got that camera so I'd love to hear what JD thinks of FW3.1 too. Especially if he has some tips for getting the most out of it - which, of course, he will.
Which lenses are ideal for the resolution aside from the Canon 32mm f1.4? I don't want to bother with an adapter.
I am thinking to pair the eos m6 Ii with
Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens for Canon EF. Yes you need an adapter.
24p is on its way to the 90d, RP, and the M6 II
Would this be good for a beginner? I am deciding on this or the Sony a6400. I will most likely be doing photography more than video. Pics of the city life and animals.
We need a flat-shaded polygon version of Jordan and Chris NOW!
Can someone get on this, please?
@@thatjordandrake 😍
LOL the intro.
I have a m100, still rockin it to this day. Contemplating buying the 32mm lense. What does everyone think? I would rather keep the m100 body after seeing this video.
1:48. Epic move there. Love that movie
Would you choose this over the g7x mark iii for concerts and low light? What about the panasonic gh5 for photos at concerts?!
What do you mean the lens can't handle the sensors resolution?
Awesome review! I just don't know why people would buy into a system that Canon obviously isn't committed to.
Mad English TV because not a lot of people watch all the reviews and rumors about the future of a system. They know canon they buy canon. Also if the consumers support the system I am confident canon will also do.
@The Oculist They are clearly aiming for everything RF, so I don't think so
@The Oculist Count the number of native lenses since the start of EF-M and RF. You'll get your answer. EF-M is deader than M43. Fact.
What's better to buy
Can’t use viewfinder and external flash at the same time?
In DXO lens there is review that they tell how many megapixel of max certain lens capability.
Apart from the dire song, what was the strap used with the M6ii? Great review btw.
I referenced your review on my video "Movie Making Cameras from $600 to $1,000 Part ll in 2020". Thanks for your review!
hello according to your experience which will have better image quality in the video? Canon M6 Markt II OR SONY RX100 M7? THANK YOU
Love that strap. Care to share who made it?
Also curious who makes the strap. Looks nice.
Nice reviews guys, like the way you guys do it!
Thanks for this review. I don't know about that 24p as i am shooting in 60 and 30p and it's not a problem for me
I noticed there is no mention of Electronic First Curtain Shutter usage....I need that info. Reason being, and THANK YOU for mentioning the shutter slap potential issue. It's actually a HUGE item to consider with these high megapixel bodies.
I've been banging this drum for months since I've been experiencing odd focus issues with a new M50. My feeling is the body is just too light.
It doesn't have EFCS. The 90D has. I will do a test this weekend to see how bad the shutter slap could be. Both hand hold and on a heavy tripod.
Dpreview, it would be nice if you could show 1080p video quality.
Which camera would you recommend to a person that needs these criteria?
- good autofocus.
- can get a variety of lens w/ affordable price.
- affordable accessories.
- nice picture color.
- can shoot 4K.
- High-quality picture.
- can shoot slow motion.
- time-lapse.
Hello, what lens would you recommend for this camera for wide angle for real estate or for nature pictures?
That intro took me to a different place 😁
So compared to Fuji Xt30 and m6ii, the choice is between uncropped 1.6x vs extra crop plus oversampling 4k?
Great review - as a primarily Canon 5dMarkIV shooter, all I want is a decent alternative when I want to travel and not take a huge kit, so it looks like this camera with a 50mm equivalent prime would fit that niche perfectly.
What do you mean it can't handle the resolution?
Great video. Thanks.
My A6400 is still within the return window. The sigma primes are massive except for the 56mm. Does the Canon M mount have better small primes than Sony. How does Sony 35 OSS compare with Canon 32 and the Sony 24 f1.8 vs Canon 22mm f2???
I just need those two focal lengths and need the camera to compact.
Thanks.
I have a 5d iv and i like m6 ii feature's im thinking to sell 5d and buy m6 ii
For the feature's digital is in video focus peaking ability to use 1.6 crop and speed booster eye tracking and more do you think im better of keeping the 5d iv or get m6 ii ? In terms of quality how do thay compare in your opinion ? Dynamic range photo and video quality ? Is it a lot worse in quality or just a little 😅
I didn't find a good video that compare these to
Please tell me which used camera should i buy??
192 $ eos m100
368 $ eos m6 mark 2
Loved this location for the review...
Releasing a brand new Body to a system wich isn´t supported with lenses from it´s own manufacturer for years. Canon, what where you thinking. Why are no lens announcements for the EOS-M?
I left this system because the lack of lenses.
Maybe canon is making new M lenses too. It just doesn't make sense. T
Which has a better EVF...the M6 with DC2 or the Fuji XT30 ??
Hey I've got a question, can I use the viewfinder while shooting video? Or is it only for photo?
Regarding the shutter, would you say that this can be a problem with long time exposures? Is the EVF better than the M5? Great review, thanks for the impressions.
I have a very important question, please answer quickly with regard to the microphone. Is it possible to connect the microphone Rode to this camera or not compatible with it?
I want to use a wireless microphone
Thanks for your understanding
Great! I've got a question. What kind of adapter do I have to use for M42 lenses? I tried a number of them. It says "No lens attached". On the flip side with 5D mark iii simplest adapters work no questions asked.
Now that the M6 mk2 has 4k 24 fps will you update this review?
Nice camera (I have one), but I'm not finding the dial function to be an improvement over a dedicated exposure compensation dial on the M6. It would be less fiddly if you could cycle through its options via repeated presses on the button. And how come it you dedicate it in the menu to exposure compensation you have to press the button before turning the dial does anything? I find that a needless extra step. I do like that the EVF is removable and you can still use the first EVF that tilts up. And how come Chris always looks too lightly dressed for the weather?
Does this camera also crop to 20MP in raw when taking stills?
Wow amazing Video! Thank you! may i ask with which camera have you filmed yourself at 11:06? :)
did you forget the 11-22mm zoom ? I think its the best in the system and up to this camera
Again it appears that only dpreview are saying this replaces both the M6 and the M5, yet Canon UK WILL NOT confirm this when asked... has anyone actual seen an official statement from Canon regarding this??
Still hoping for an M6 Mark II here.... Or maybe have the M50 move up the product line up for it's Mark II version.
Can M50 pick af point from touchscreen as well? While looking thru viewfinder
Yes it can.
How to mount external flash in case EVF is on, say for macro shots etc.?
Does the mark 2 firmware update is valid for the mark1?
Love you guys. You have taught me a great deal about photography and film making. I’m looking for the best mirrorless or dslr for around $1200 (body only) to record my nieces. One is a gymnast and the other does local community theater. I will be purchasing a 70-200mm f2.8 lens for whatever body I choose as well. I’m looking for eye autofocus that functions in 4k. Some have suggested Sony a6600 (I’m a little concerned about the rolling shutter) others have suggested Canon M6 Mark ii (some have said eye autofocus doesn’t work in 4k) Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for the review. Would be great if you could do a video of lenses you would recommend to go with the 6 mkii. Would be very helpful to me as I'm about the invest in this camera.
Well basically we said it in this video, the 32mm and 28mm M lenses should work well. We might review the sigma primes trio coming out soon but those should do a good job too. Canon needs to make a good pro like zoom though, desperately.
@@niccollsvideo thanks, I have a 28-105 redline EF mount. Will there be any issues using this lens with m6 mkii?
@@garygiles63 None at all Gary! Other than a crop factor of course.
@@niccollsvideo thanks
