I had to do this a couple times because the instructions were kinda confusing but we got it all figured out and this video is hopefully going to help all of our other s85 owners take their beasts and get them back in their cage. I hope everyone finds these videos entertaining and informational. If you have any suggestions please let me know in the comments! When you are taking in a project like the s5 keep in mind these are very sophisticated engines and even dealerships shy away from repairing our beasts and just recommend a new engine instead of the repairs required to fix them. Once you are able to actually hear the sound these engines make amd experience the joy of pushing that m button in a naturally aspirated formula derived v10 beast you will never be able to go back. My previous car was a 2003 Rs6 and although that car was magnificent in its own right it wasn’t as fun to drive as the bmw, all wheel drive amd turbos kinda muffled the experience. Anyways sir back, relax amd enjoy the video! www.m5board.com/threads/vanos...

    Good video.
    Was very intimidated by the prospect of having to retime the s85, but it actually looks pretty simple, even when compared to the s62. I think the only time this gets even remotely complicated is if/when you have to remove the units.

    Good afternoon, I do all the steps with the tools that appear in the video, I rotate the engine and the exhaust tool on the left side that enters its location. Where can the problem be if it only happens with the exhaust vanos on one side? Thank you

      @@Unintendedacceleration i just actually did my bearings last weekend. I got em just before 3 and 7 were about to spin lol. What brand did u use for the bearings? I used a ACL cuz BE was out of stock

      Same here, I used acl as well, when I spoke to Andrew Lang he said he hasn’t had any failures with the acl bearings. I know acl is trusted in the big block Chevy world so I wasn’t too worried.

    Hi, i have an s85. The timing was off, i removed the gears without timing tools, i tried for a
    15 times with timing tool but no result at the exhaust cam bank 2. All the other ones are on time. I replaced the exhaust and intake gear. No result. Does the exhaust and intake gear have alighnment between each other? I dont understand why just the timing of the exhaust gear at bank 2 cames too late?

    I just bought a rebuilt engine with no vanos units, so I'm having to put the Vanos units from my current engine onto the rebuilt one... Is there any advice before I remove these vanos units form the old engine that will save me time/work? 😬

    • @Unintendedacceleration
      @Unintendedacceleration  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, mark them with a sharpie in case they come apart and make sure you buy the special tool hood them while you take them off. Will save you lots of headache.

    Awesome video. Are you saying all of the bolts need to be loose and in place for the gears or just the ones without the washers?
    We’ve spoken on M5Board before. Mind if I message you? I’ll be going through something similar on my car so would love to pick your brain. Keep them coming! Can’t wait to see this bad boy running.

    • @Unintendedacceleration
      @Unintendedacceleration  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks man, and yes all the bolts with and without washers need to be loosened so when you install the vanos unit they can slide forward slightly by 8mm so you don’t ruin the unit. After that you tighten just the ones you can see to 10nm and then remove all the special tools you put in place to do the timing amd rotate the engine until you can tighten and mark all the remaining bolts. Good luck 🍀

      Thanks for the kind words, I’m glad you are finding it useful. Yes I e paid a few times for the $250 version which is a month and I’ve paid the $30 version a few times as well which is just 24 hours. I haven’t paid a year...that’s $2500. But I definitely would recommend it (the $250 version)if you are attempting a build, there are a lot of things I never would of thought of if I didn’t have the BMWTIS.

    Really enjoying your videos. I have an 08 M5 and just started removing the engine for a full rebuild. Do you know how much material was taken off your crankshaft?

    • @Unintendedacceleration
      @Unintendedacceleration  3 роки тому

      By the spun rod? Not sure exactly but you could fill it with your finger, I’d say around 2-3 thousandths. Of course Lang racing development built it back up and machined it to factory specs.

    • @norbsautos
      @norbsautos 3 роки тому

      Ah sorry I thought yours was ground and different sized bearings used.
      Yours was built back up so you can use standard sized bearings.
      There is a company here in the uk that will grind my crank to undersize and use a different bearing otherwise a second hand crank is an option but I’m yet to see a perfect one!
      I think I’ll wait till I get the timing kit before removing the chain!

    • @Unintendedacceleration
      @Unintendedacceleration  3 роки тому +1

      Mine was built back to factory but I did use bearings to allow for more oil clearances. I think it’s easier to buy bearings with more clearance than to machine crank to a different size. That’s awesome you are getting your build started. I’m really close to bolting my trans up to the engine🕺

    Why do my exhaust gears in my 2006 m5 stick out and are not sucked in while removed... also noticed my vanos gear springs in the exhaust are wound the opposite direction as replacement units and yours. Was there as upgrade? Where is the issue at if you rotate to check timing and the locks are not flush? Sorry having issues and been at this for 2 days even with your videos and the tools. 🤣

    • @Unintendedacceleration
      @Unintendedacceleration  3 роки тому +1

      The biggest part is installing the vanos adjustment unit in correctly. If you do that right, you should be able to put the tool on the intake cams at tdc and it should be flush and then rotate to 39degrees and the tools should fit in the exhaust cams flush. Not sure about your heads but sounds like someone out them together backwards, where did you get them?

    • @brandonadrian3958
      @brandonadrian3958 3 роки тому

      @@Unintendedacceleration that's what I thought, but the spring is wound the same direction as the intake springs, causing them all to push out naturally. It's odd. But I guess I'm asking if I locked my cams, then on rotation, they aren't flush on the check, that adjustment is in the vanos gear (bolts with washers). I should not have to remove the gears, just make the fine adjustments?

Btw that retardation on the exhaust is pretty severe.. Do you know if that is the position for idle? I'd gues it was pretty hard to get that Euro 4 emison rating with a 5 litre V10.

    • @Unintendedacceleration

      Yes in fact it was embarrassing when I put the exhaust cams in the wrong heads but I thought no way that’s how they go but they do. Maybe it would run better with them switched lol. Wish I had an engine to try it with I didn’t care about. Did I was building a bug block I would of left the on the wrong side going off looks, no Interference either
