    I wanna say, this isn't really 2.5D, it's 3D with a 2D artstyle, rather than 2D elements in a 3D space, the original DOOM is 2.5D. That's just my 2 cents on what you're referring to it as, not a critique on the artwork itself, it's well done and good job with it and the video.

    You're the first person I've seen personally that used a no-rigging style of positioning solid pieces by parenting them to each other! My very first fully 3D modeled character was a robot that used this same kind of movement, I would have killed to know you could simply parent each piece together if you wanted to make a poseable rig, at least within blender for rendering as art. I've watched a couple of your videos now and you're the most charming and informative person I've seen when it comes to Blender tutorials! Thanks for what you do. Deuces!

    A note for anyone thinking to use the parent/posing method here for animation. It is very doable, but be warned you will not be able to add IK to parenting, (At least not that I know of) without bones.
    That said, this is a great way to get practice in a lot of different elements of any workflow. Sketching, modeling, posing, lighting, Grease Pencil, and material making are all on display here.
    AND! If you feel like you know what your players want, this is a good way to make some baddies, or figures for the other video that Moltenbolt made about using Blender as a VTT! BUT If you do that you should take the tip about how the sliced onion works and move that idea to the full figure. Yes you can parent an empty to another empty, just don't go too crazy or you'll lose track of things. XD
    I hope this helps at least half as much as the video in inspiring people to try things to practice their craft, OR even just make some fun art. ^^
    Deuces and aloha!

    • @moltenbolt
      @moltenbolt  8 місяців тому

      Thanks, and I added you to the Members List! Also I 100% agree - parenting in this way makes posing simple but makes animating difficult lmao. Better to use bones and a rig if you plan to animate!
      Keeping track of parent chains can be a pain - always good to name your parent and children appropriately (something I failed to do fully in the video 🙃) to help keep track.

      @@moltenbolt I want to underline something that I should have the moment I saw this. Pure, boneless, Parenting can be used in animation but only in a simple way. If you plan on more complex animations... please, save your mind and use a rig. Even a bad rig can be more useful than boneless Parented object connections on a robot or the like.
      Naming is always a good idea BUT, it isn't something that you need to do like coding. AKA, you can come back later and name something without messing up a lot.
      Still, thank you for adding me! It isn't needed, but enjoyed.
      Blender safe out there y'all. ^^

    I'm considering an approach like this for my game, but it's more a brick breaker clone. So the art will be somewhat simple, but I think something like this could provide it with an interesting look.
    Would you export PNGs or the actual model if you were going to use something like this for a game?

    • @moltenbolt
      @moltenbolt  8 місяців тому

      I actually wouldn't use this method for a game. The toon shader would work just fine exported to a texture like a normal asset, but grease pencil outlines and such wouldn't transfer into an engine I don't think. You'd need to add outlines in the game engine itself as far as I know.
      For the model itself and the toon shader, you could export those to an engine without issue though, so the only thing missing would be the outlines I think.

    • @MichaelGame_Dev
      @MichaelGame_Dev 8 місяців тому +1

      @@moltenboltThat makes sense. I do see a very simple shader I could use in Godot for the outline. I'll have to look at it a bit more. I think the real trick is if I use the 3d the shaders become a lot more complex. But this is definitely something I'm going to play around with even if I don't use it on the current project.

    Can you build a char like that for animation and skip using a Rig?

    • @moltenbolt
      @moltenbolt  7 місяців тому

      Technically speaking, you can - but for anything resembling a complex animation it's probably better to just rig it. Since I was just using the parenting for a static pose, it suited my purposes. But yeah, if I was gonna animate it I'd go with a simple rig. Hope that helps! 😁

    • @moltenbolt
      @moltenbolt  6 місяців тому

      It's not a stupid question at all! As far as I know, the toon shaded texture should interact with the lighting in the scene... I haven't used the 2.5 method to animate anything just yet, but I know the lighting is finicky. Does it not render the lighting correctly?

    • @clarissa8804

    One question. How did you manage to make the steam supply lines from the pan be above the contour of the scene modifier?
    Thanks

    • @moltenbolt
      @moltenbolt  8 місяців тому

      You are very welcome hehe. If I understand the question correctly, and you are wondering how the steam lines do not have an outline, it's because the steam lines are part of a grease pencil object that isn't included in the 'meshes' collection. Anything excluded from that collection shouldn't have an outline. I hope that helps 😁

    • @belpetr1
      @belpetr1 8 місяців тому +1

      @@moltenbolt That's not exactly what I meant. When I apply the Grease Pencil modifier to a scene, these contours are drawn on top of the rest. And I can't make other Grease Pencil objects draw on top of it. In my case, I created the body of the devil and applied the Grease Pencil modifier to it to create an outline, and drew the hair with a different color and another Grease Pencil object. But the hair is crossed out by the contour of the body. And I don't understand how to fix it.

    • @moltenbolt

      If your issue is that you can still see the outline through the newly drawn grease pencil drawing, I wasn't able to prevent the strokes generated by the Line Art modifier (on the Outline grease pencil) from being seen through the steam either.
