As a mega-Nirvana-fan for decades, I've noticed there have always been some people who just don't "get" Nirvana. And that's fine, it's music appreciation has a subjective element to it. But what I dislike is when they argue, "just because someone died doesn't mean they become a legend." Anyone making that argument is just showing they have tunnel vision, as if they're unable to recognize that others may appreciate different aspects of music than they do. Because nobody likes Nirvana solely because Kurt died. No one. People like Nirvana for their music. For Kurt's voice & songwriting. For Dave's drumming. And how they all sounded together, playing a style that was unique at the time and done in a genuine way. If they can't even imagine any reason for why people may hear something in music that they don't, that's just an inability to see/hear things from anyone else's perspective other than their own - a very narcissistic trait.

I love nirvana but my issue is more with the perception of nirvana and Kurt especially than the guy or the band itself. For a band who's credited with " making it all about the music again" people have built up such a cult of personality around cobain and the band that it's become about everything but the music. Even on the musical end of things people do tend to make more out of the band than is really there. They were a breath of fresh air when they came out, they did make a more stripped back down to earth form of rock and roll than was popular, and Kurt was a good songwriter as far as riffs and interesting melodies, and his voice was perfect for the kind of music they made, but that's about it. He wasn't a good lyricist in my opinion yet people compare him to Lennon or Dylan, even he admitted that he didn't put much into his lyrics. Also the romanticism of some of his traits like his ambivalent attitude, nihilistic philosophies, addiction, and mental health struggles is kind of lame to me on the part of the people who romanticize it. His personality was slightly unappealing to me as I became an adult and realised he was not much more than an angst ridden Moody teenager who thought hating things and and being antisocial was edgy and cool, at least publicly. It's not so much him but way he's portrayed by his own fans I have an issue with. The same thing happened to jim Morrison.
I got into them a few years before starting my own musical journey. Some of the songs on In Utero and Nevermind are superb. But bands like Pixies and Radiohead etc were much more of an inspiration.

I think in a lot of ways Kurt was a class act but I could never really get into Nirvana and especially grunge. Usually when fans would talk about Nirvana I would just try to politely say that it wasn't really something I liked. Unfortunately, they would often put on songs and explain why I needed to worship them and that I just didn't understand their music. This to me sounds like the antithesis of what Cobain was all about and what he stood for.
