I love your collage painting you did with these. How beautiful, especially with the addition of the butterflies, etc. Your swatching prompted me to check those two potentially swapped colors in my set of Caran d'aches Aquarelles I found that my set is also like yours. The Dark Phthalo Green and the Dark Sap Green pencil labels appear to be reversed. I've also had mine for a while so not sure if it was caught in more recent sets. Beautiful Becky I have the luminance set and I’m in the middle of collecting my Pablo I have 10 to go they are both beautiful pencils and probably my next one to collect is the ones you did a review I’ll most likely buy a few from a art shop and go from there. ❤❤❤😊😊😊xxxx

Hi Becky, i like your birds. The beehive pheasant brought back memories of the beehive hairdos of the seventies in the US. 😂 Seriously, i really do like your pictures and the pencils. I don't have them, but ya never know. I might get someday.
I am lucky enough to have the 40 pencil set. I have had them just under a year now. They are so nice, just love to work with them. They look exactly like your pencils. Thank you for the great video!
I just watched your Albrecht Durer set swatching video, then this one, and I will look at the Supracolors next. I like the speeded up swatching videos, real time takes long enough doing it myself. I think of these colors as being "softer" or they remind me of antique colors compared to the A.B set, but I haven't painted anything yet other than the long swatching. I love your artwork that you create after each new art materials swatch. Thank you.
Thank you! I try to get an art done with the swatching, though in my most recent Kuretake video I ran out of time for a painting but I'll have another video in the week for that. 😁
Great review Becky! I’ve lusted over them for years. I have the smallest set, beautiful pencils they seem more like gouache than the Albrecht Durer and I love them both! Also I love your bird painting demo it was fun to see the pencils in action. Your swatches were helpful in picking out some colors since I can’t afford the whole set unfortunately.
I feel like there are more opaque colours in this set, compared with Albrechts which are mostly transparent. I really need to do a full side by side comparison. This set is sooo expensive, and Nick was very popular that Christmas when he bought them for me and hid them under the sofa so I found them later, after other gifts were opened and I got such a surprise!
Your birds are lovely!! I like these kind of spreads, especially for trying out new art supplies! I have only a few of these pencils and I do like them, though I prefer the Albrecht Dürer ones as they seem more transparent to me. I like using watercolour pencils washed out for a base layer and then dry on top, which gives the colours so much depth.
Nice review - I didn’t all the differences there were, still not sure what the lower price ones are. I have started collecting Luminance, Ihab neo 1 in several sets, and that all. Thx for the video.
They have a range of sets for different levels - Luminance and Museum Aquarelle being at the top, and then Pablo and Supracolor are a level lower, but are still very good. It's hard to keep up with them all, lol!
Beautiful swatch chart and painting! It looks like a gorgeous set of pencils and, for that reason, I’m glad I haven’t gotten overly “into” pencils, it will help save money 😅. I always enjoy watching other people use watercolour pencils, but I haven’t put any time into learning how to use them effectively. I do have a tin of 36 Albrecht Durer pencils as well as a set of Derwent Inktense, in case I want to grab one occasionally.
@@BeckyTregear That’s exactly my problem!! When I like something, it becomes a mission to collect them all 💰 💰 💰. So, I’ll count myself lucky that pencils haven’t grabbed my attention 😂
Thanks for sharing your beautiful art supplies! I don't use a lot of color/watercolor pencils but that doesn't matter - it's alwways THRILLING to see an entire boxed set opened, swatched, analyzed, and demonstrated. Fantastic video!
Love the collage, it really shows off the colors. Please do a showdown between the Caran D’Ache and the Albrecht Durer. I would be very interested in how they compare. Thanks for sharing😘
Hi Becky, great video. I've always wondered about these pencils. I started with Derwent Academy and they were ok, not very pigmented. Then my daughter gave me an old set of Derwent watercolour pencils that my stepfather used to have and they were so good, I decided to buy the 72 set but to my disappointment they were not the same as the old ones, they felt very plasticky and did not layer at all. Then I bought a 36 set of the Albert Durers and was blown away. They completely dissolve, without leaving any marks, they are more pigmented dry than any of my colour pencils, including the Polychromos and Derwent Coloursoft. They are even more pigmented than Prismacolor Premier but not as creamy. If I had to start all over, I would probably first buy the Albert Durers and then probably the Prismacolors. I am interested in the beige range in the Supracolors, I'll have to try them some day but I wonder if they are like the Prismacolor French Greys. I would love to try the Luminance one day but they are so expensive. I recently got a great deal on the Lightfast but haven't had a chance to use them yet. Have a great day Becky. Can't wait for the show down. Your birds are beautiful! Vanessa 😊
I remember being astounded at the quality of Albrecht Durers the first time I used them too! I have a set of Derwent watercolour pencils - I want to do a full review on them as well because I haven't used them very much and I need to confirm how good (or not!) they are. Not as a good as Albrechts or Museums, I'm sure! 😂
Hi Becky, I love your birds and the vibrant colours. I don't have these but was wondering since you have both (Museum and Supracolour) which ones would you recommend (for using as wet and dry). Or perhaps you did that comparison already and I missed it. Thanks for sharing your review and artwork, Becky. 💜💙💚💛🧡
Thank you! Both are great but I think Supracolours would be more versatile for using dry as well as wet. I haven't yet done a comparison between the two sets....I need to do this! 😂
The sad thing is that those stuffs are one of the rarest art supplies in my country. Knowing that this is a third world country. I would crave for it since it's my last year for college.
@@BeckyTregeareeh...i have the 84 colors wood box (76 colors + 4 doubled colors + 1 grafwood pencil & 3 acquarell technalo pencils).. The colours are faboulose, used like a pencil and then watered, but also taking off a little pigments and usino it like a watercolour.. The really differenze beetween other pencil is thst these are extrafine acquarells into a pencil. The transparence/opacity is fantastic, and used like watercolurs (using them on the apposite pigment palette) they are insuperable. Really the best pencil watercolours i have. Fortunatly i bought the entire new wood set for 320€ instead of 470€ , cause my shop is in business with them and can do a lot of discount. The other thing is that they have all the single pencils, so you can buy a new one easily. In this way. The investimenti is at the beginning. Then you can buy single pieces each for 4€ . I have this wood complete set and 3 different set of 20 horadam Shmimcke acquarells. In this way i cover all my needs for the acquarells.. these are really super-materials.. Like uou said, the MUSEUM serie has a range of particular colours that you can't find in other acquarell pencil. This cause they are concept to be extrafine acquarells, so the colors are more transparent and similar at the finest acquarells. If you want a more classic solubil pencil, there are marks like "faber castell ALBRECHT DURER", more similar to a coloured pencil, with covering colours. I love also these one, but I need only the 36 colour set, cause i use them a little less then the others. I use this materials for wirk. That"s the motive for what i have so muuch material..i bought it in 20 years of art making.. Also for watercolours, i use horadam schmimcke, but I have also 24 Cotman tubetto and a box of cotman godgets, more less expensive but very good for price/quality. Caran d'Ache museum is one of the best materials i bought. Surely!😊
Thank you SO incredibly much! I have wanted to comment all day but my comment was quite long! I think I may write it when I’m not so exhausted and it’s not so late. Your drawing / painting turned out absolutely stunning- I love how you did this piece ! The vibrancy of the pencils really is incredible! As for your funny purple- I have seen a few people mention about the purples ( including Lisa from lachri fine art), and that some colours feel different ( & I’ve always felt there are variations in all sets, probably due to the pigments used) … so it may not just be due to wetting it 🤷♀️ or perhaps a combination of both. I have a few odd colours I think… Will check which purples & others & let you know ☺️. I noticed that when you activated the swatch, did you have a few , almost bits of pigment or granulation ( wouldn’t expect that with pencils but they are like actual watercolour in the pencil if that makes sense, which is what makes them unique from all other watercolour pencils, and someone mentioned that it can occur with these 🤷♀️)?. I had a bit of a panic the other day when I commented on your Albrecht durer video… I’m so sorry!
It's all good, I appreciate your thoughtful comments! So, from what I'm experiencing, it seems like the Museum Aquarelles are heavier and often quite opaque like gouache; whether that's pigment load or granulating ones I'm not sure, and the Albrechts feel a bit more transparent. I think Albrecht might dissolve a bit more easily? I need to do a full side by side comparison and use them both at the same time to get a really solid opinion on them both - I like both sets of pencils though! And yes, that violet is being recalcitrant - it's the only one which is like that so I don't know if it is just the pencil itself, or that I dried it out with the water.
@@BeckyTregear thank you so incredibly much and sorry it took a while for me to get back to you. I actually purchased new/ unused box set from fb market place at an insanely cheep price(less than 1/4 full price...). I just cant help but wonder if some of mine are a bit odd or perhaps they are just different (most seem amazing tho! I do know they are quite old however, so...). Or maybe its in my head- cant believe i could get that lucky and im analysing every detail! lol Surely nothing so lucky could happen to me... May i ask, do you find that some colours dont seem to quite 'flow' as much as others and do feel a bit heavy- i guess that is the gouache type thing you mentotioned? I found that some didn't dissolve as well as the durers too and I thought it would be opposite . And im so sure one of my colours (umber i think) granulates a little 😂. And so sorry- another question- my 640 feel quite dry, may i ask does yours? I think a few that feel dry . As i said above, i did notice variation among them but expect that to some extent anyway . LOl. Im going to get some open stock to see how they compare... but they are amazing! Agree the durers are more transparent and I think would e easier to use and layer perhaps? I think i prefer them on cold pressed although i know most people prefer hot pressed for watercolour pencils. Thank you so much and so sorry for my long and late reply edit- really lookinging forward to seeing your comparison between the AD's, supracolors and Museums :)
I have the landscape set and basic 12 set. These pencils are highly pigmented but my main problem is sometimes I can’t dissolve the pencil lines and that bugs me. I tend to use the CD MA for small details and corrections on my watercolor paintings. Lovely paintings.
@@shadowguard3578 😂 my mistake. I had meant to say I didn’t know that you were into water-soluble pencils 😄. I think it’s an open secret that we are all into watercolours 😆😆.
Hi Becky, can you give your quick thoughts on the differences between the supracolor softs and the museum aquarelle, other than the lightfastness? Are they less pigmented, harder, or more difficult to rewet? Thanks!
From memory, Supracolor are a little firmer than the Museums, and Supras also have a much larger colour range with a lot of bright and pastel colours that I don't think are very lightfast (but they're very pretty!). Both pencils rewet well but I really need to do a side by side comparison to say which is better here. I've got a bunch of future videos to make on this subject! 😂
Sarah, I don't have the full set, but of those I have, I have had for quite some time, and use them alongside Supracolor and Albrecht Durer. The Museum are definitely softer than Supracolor, which can be frustrating, as it can be hard to get detail without a very sharp point (and consequent loss of pencil to get that sharp point, unless using a knife) . Otherwise, I think it's pretty much on a par, as most of the less lightfast Supracolour are missing from the Museum set. What is truly, utterly frustrating, though, is that Cd'A have chosen completely different names for most of the Museum range, so it's really hard to make the cross-over! I think what we're really paying for - and it's worth it, I think - is the thicker core size. Supracolor lasts well, but I'm guessing that Museum will make its main gain for us from that thicker core and the subsequent more even lay-down. Hope this helps a bit? 😊
I have the 20 landscape set which is supposed to have dark pthalo green, but my dark pthalo green also definitely a dark sap green like yours. Maybe our sets were manufactured during the same time period?
@@BeckyTregear mine were 2019. But I just looked on their official product colour chart and their dark sap Swatch is very pthalo while their dark pthalo is very sap. They must have made the mistake in their first run of the product, then not wanted to correct it so that there's consistency?
Pretty pencils. I still need to really learn watercolor pencil drawing (well all water colour mediums honestly). Although I've only got Inktense and kids Faber Castell water colour pencils. The Inktense are obviously fine to try and learn with, even if they aren't exactly water colour. At least they wont reactivate, which might be helpful for learning. Did you switch the two greens as the other? Will that be confusing if you look at the swatches to pick a colour? Lol
I swatched them the original way in another book, and it makes my eye twitch seeing the wrongness of those two greens when it comes to their names. 😂 I also have much to learn when it comes to watercolour pencils - they're quite difficult to master!
I made a research about lightfast test including the Caran d'ache Museum, more than half of the colors are still lightfast is it should be few are completely wiped out or had fade/changed. Sadly Albrecht Durer pencils aren't featured
@@BeckyTregear and I forgot to mention that the colors were also activated with waters and are also compared to the dry looks of the pigments. The test was done in Israel within 12 weeks but it should be enough for the test because the conditions were too extreme. And based on what I saw, it would seem that activation with waters has nothing to do with the lightfastness because the waters will soon evaporate on the paper while the melted pigments will stay on the paper when it dries.
They look beautiful in their little foam bed. I don't think I'd want to sharpen them if I had the full set. "Luckily" I only have about 20 or so and I store them with all my other pencils in drawers. I don't feel like I need all of them, I never use the bright colors anyway. I'm only a hoarder of brown pencils 😂
It took me around five years to sharpen these pencils properly, so I could use them in this video! 😂 It's definitely cheaper when only going for some of the colours or shades rather than the full set.
The "light fast" pencil manufacturers "cheat" by having so many earth tones. Earth tones are light fast by nature. My favorite part of your videos is always your drawings, and this case is no exception. Gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.
I finally have them, at least 13 colors from Open stocks. BTW, what's the difference between those two Black? The other is just a Regular Black while the other is "Ivory Black"? What's the point of Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle for having two blacks with different titles?
Going off memory, Ivory Black is usually warmer toned than Black (which is maybe Lamp Black). So one will be slightly browner than the other. The subtleties of blacks. ❤
Your drawings are beautiful. Those pencils are amazing, right? I got the 40 set of them, second handed, hardly used, not even sharpened for a very good price (I seem to do that a lot, haha)
Thank you, and yes they really are amazing! I love finding supplies in the second hand market, or other places where bargains are to be had. Many of my art supplies were found at a super discounted rate too, haha.
I thought your painting looked great. Very pretty. I have the full set of Faber Castel watercolor pencils. I’ve not used mine much, I prefer to just use watercolor paints. I think I should use the pencils in the same painting with watercolor paints 🤔 mmmm
Thank you! I tend to use watercolours more, but I've been trying to get better with using the pencils because they're very tricky to master! They can work together as well, for sure! 😊

Love your video I love pigions as they helped win the war .with messages tied to them. and they have some lovely shades and colors . It sure does! I'm doing my best to work my way through stuff in my studio...this year has been a bit more successful when it comes to that, though I did get sent a fair bit of stuff as well so that doesn't help! I've been giving stuff away to arty friends.
Hahnemuhle 100% cotton watercolour sketchbook - the paper is nice but it seems to work better for watercolour pencils than actual watercolours as it doesn't like heavy washes, lol.
Hello there. I have the Albretch Dürer but they dont have a true Burnt Sienna. They do have a pencil named Burnt Sienna but is quite yellowish and for me a burnt sienna should be a orangy/reddish, kinda brown. I own a bunch of Museum Aquarelle, but no browns in those. Soooooo... I came here 😅😅😅😅😅 help me please! Since a screen can be deceiving, I can't differentiate the colors well enough! 😢 So, to you, which of those browns is similar to a burnt sienna?! Help!!! 😅
Sorry it took a while; I had to find my swatches! 😂 I'm looking at the Museums now, and the closest ones to Burnt Sienna (which look more so than actual Burnt Sienna) are Cinnamon and if you want a redder version, Russet. They seem to be nearest according to my eyes. Even regular Brown is kind of ok as well, but maybe is closer to Burnt Umber.
@@BeckyTregear 😅😅😅 Me too! But if not, no worries! It would be a new watercolor pencil for my collection, and I'll just keep looking. I have Russet already, and yes it is too orange... Im gonna buy the Cinnamon. If that is not the right color for me, I'll keep looking in other brands. I remember I had a hard time looking for a red-orange, and a blue-violet. It took me a while till I found them, and took buying some "wrong" pencils in the process, but again, those "wrong" pencils were very welcome to my collection. So, dont think Im gonna get mad or something if Cinnamon turned out to be a "wrong" color for me. It would be a nice addition either way. 😊 I know some people might get a little nasty (or a lot) if they follow a suggestion that wasnt right for them... People! That's why I prefer my pets! 😅
It's so hard to pick! 😂 Maybe Albrechts by a whisker, mainly because they have 120 colours, but also because they work beautifully. So to the Museums though...aaahhh, I need to film a showdown video and then maybe I can decide.

Thank you! I try to get an art done with the swatching, though in my most recent Kuretake video I ran out of time for a painting but I'll have another video in the week for that. 😁
Love the picture you created, really vibrant x
Thank you!
Yes, I'd agree that the Albrechts seem a lot more transparent. I'll do a direct comparison video between the two, one of these days.
@@BeckyTregear That would be very interesting!
Lovely review my dear! I actually love the Aquarelles. They are more opaque than the Albrecht Durer, but the colors are gorgeous
They are wonderful pencils for sure! I love the colour palette. 😊
Beautiful work, becky.
Thank you! 😊
I just HAD TO HAVE THESE!! I just got the ones in the 76 piece set in the wooden box. They even smell soooooo goooood....
Oh that's so exciting, the wooden box version is so beautiful! Enjoy!! 💜
Your painting is gorgeous!
Thank you 😊
Ive never tried these before but i do love my luminance 💜
Luminance pencils are awesome too! ❤️
It definitely becomes an expensive hobby, collecting the full sets! 😂 I have yet to master watercolour pencils; they're a difficult medium.
Thank you! I've been wanting to film these for ages because it is such a beautiful set. Now to do a video comparing them all with other brands, lol.
Thank you so much! Beautiful painting!!! Do you have any thoughts on how the Museum Aquarell compare to the Albrecht Dürer from Faber. Thank you!
I really want to do a showdown between these two sets, so we can really see what the differences are. But both are great! 😆
I have these and my other half bought them for me. I absolutely love them.
Yay! It's always great when they are gifted by loved ones. 😊
I think Caran d'Ache isn't quite as large as some other companies....and wow are they expensive, even in Switzerland where they're made!
Thank you so much and so sorry for my long and late reply
edit- really lookinging forward to seeing your comparison between the AD's, supracolors and Museums :)
Once again Becky, very nice. Karen from Canada
Thank you 😊
I have the landscape set and basic 12 set. These pencils are highly pigmented but my main problem is sometimes I can’t dissolve the pencil lines and that bugs me. I tend to use the CD MA for small details and corrections on my watercolor paintings. Lovely paintings.
Hi Shadow 👋🏼. I didn’t know you were into watercolours.
Yes, it can be a bit difficult to fully dissolve them! I want to compare them with a few other sets I've reviewed to see which dissolves the best.
@@awatercolourist hello awatercolourist! It’s an open secret that I’m into watercolors! 🤫😆
@@BeckyTregear that’s a great idea! It might help people who are looking to purchase watercolor pencils.
@@MrsBarnabas Fantastic, thank you so much for that detailed comparison, exactly what I needed, thank you!!
I have the 20 landscape set which is supposed to have dark pthalo green, but my dark pthalo green also definitely a dark sap green like yours. Maybe our sets were manufactured during the same time period?
I think I got these in 2018....it seems a few others have the same issue. I wonder if that has ever been picked up by Caran d'Ache, lol.
@@BeckyTregear mine were 2019.
But I just looked on their official product colour chart and their dark sap Swatch is very pthalo while their dark pthalo is very sap.
They must have made the mistake in their first run of the product, then not wanted to correct it so that there's consistency?
Lovely page!
Thank you 😊
Great video. Quick tip: aqua'relle. The stress is on the last syllable.
Yeah I always mispronounce it - I've Aussie-fied that word for sure! 😂
Yes, they often say lightfast and then independent tests prove otherwise. I think I'll try and get a big test going for different watercolour pencils.
Haha that's so true! Pinks and reds are the usual culprits for being fugitive.
Earth tones also good for drawing dogs
Good for you, I strongly believe in giving things a second 'chance'.
wonderful

There's a certain point where collecting supplies actually inhibits artwork.
It sure does! I'm doing my best to work my way through stuff in my studio...this year has been a bit more successful when it comes to that, though I did get sent a fair bit of stuff as well so that doesn't help! I've been giving stuff away to arty friends.
Hi, what "sketchbook" are you using here?
Hahnemuhle 100% cotton watercolour sketchbook - the paper is nice but it seems to work better for watercolour pencils than actual watercolours as it doesn't like heavy washes, lol.
Awesome! Thank you, I've been looking for a sketchbook for neocolors as well
Hello there.
@@BeckyTregear thank u so much! I was waiting for your answer to place my order. 😂
@@veystone2580 I hope I got it right! 😵💫
I know some people might get a little nasty (or a lot) if they follow a suggestion that wasnt right for them... People! That's why I prefer my pets! 😅
Do you prefer these or the Albrecht Durer? 😍
It's so hard to pick! 😂 Maybe Albrechts by a whisker, mainly because they have 120 colours, but also because they work beautifully. So to the Museums though...aaahhh, I need to film a showdown video and then maybe I can decide.
