I'll be swatching the gouache paints and pencils, and sharing a closer look at the Etchr sketchbooks in Part 3, which is coming soon. There will also be a separate video all about the gorgeous Kremer Pigments Greys Watercolour Palette. Materials featured: Daniel Smith, Winsor & Newton, Schmincke, Roman Szmal, and Jackson's Artist Watercolours. I'm using a Pro Arte Prolene flat brush to swatch, on 140lb NOT surface cold pressed watercolour paper.

    Vicarious art hauls are always popular as most people like to see colours on UA-cam before we order them - or just drool at them!

    For the primatek colors, I squeezed my tubes into full pans- you can expect certain ones to shrink a LOT (mayan blue did for me) but what I did as well was put a drop of vegetable glycerine into the full pan and stirred with a toothpick to incorporate them into the paint. This helps prevent cracking and I've noticed my paints rewet easily and beautifully. I believe this is a tip I learned from Jane Blundell. I will also note that I have the DS dot sheets so I can compare my primatek paints to the dots without glycerine and I do think they look very similar, the only one I think is a bit different is the Mayan blue- which I have read often has trouble rewetting in people's palettes but I have not experienced this at all while adding the glycerine. I find out of my pan seems less dull than the one on my dot card.
    Oh and I also did the glycerine trick with the WN potters pink I put into a half pan, mostly because I read many people had issues rewetting it, and potters pink can be a bit notorious for that. I also don't have issues rewetting that color either.
    Sorry for the long comment, hope it helps or gives you some insight :) We have a lot of same colors so I thought I'd share my experience.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt

      I think I need to get my hands on some vegetable glycerine! Thanks so much for the tip. :) Did you find that the paints with the glycerine in them dry differently, or do they look different on the paper at all? Thanks again!

    • @ChrisLauren
      @ChrisLauren 3 роки тому +2

      @@NatashaNewtonArt Basically as long as you don't overdo it, and only add 1 drop, there shouldn't be a visible difference. If I recall correctly if you put too much in, the colors could potentially dry a bit shinier. If you have a steady hand, putting one drop is fine but if you're worried, I have dipped a toothpick into a little blob of the stuff and then stirred the toothpick into my pan of paint! Seems like not every brand/color needs this and I don't always add it to my paint.
      Here's the post on Jane's blog about it: blundell201.rssing.com/chan-52752720/article9-live.html
      Also, Liz Steel who absolutely loves WN potters pink has mentioned the drop of glycerine trick as well so I think it's tried and true among more experienced watercolorists. I'd purchase a tiny bottle if you can find one. I have a huge bottle and I don't think I can ever use all of it just for paint hahaha. Basically glyerine is a humectant so it helps rehydrate the paint easier, and you don't need a ton of it for it to work, which is great!
      Good luck! Let me know if you need any help❤️ ! Also, thanks for the lovely videos.

    Mayan Dark Blue is my absolutely favorite watercolor. The biggest difference between it and Indigo or payne's grey is that it granulates a tiny bit and since it doesn't contain the usual phthalo blue that the other dark blue mixes have sometimes, depending on the brand of course, it tends to be a little bit less staining. It's great!

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 роки тому +2

      I can already tell that it's going to be a firm favourite! To me, it's pretty much the perfect dark blue. I'm so glad to hear you love it too! 🧡

    • @franninchen
      @franninchen 3 роки тому +2

      The biggest difference is actually that the mayan dark blue is a blue with warm undertones while especially the indigo but also Sodalite genuine have cool undertones. Mayan colours aren't prone to heavy granulation in general. If there even is one it is a very soft and subtle. But this is just the point of daniel smith. The indigo of daniel smith is very special. It has a mixture that no one else uses for indigo and the genuine indigo, which you won't get that often in watercolour, is more of a warm colour as well. :)

    Mixing watercolours is so magical with endless lovely discoveries and surprises! Transparent pyrrol orange makes the most beautiful black mixes with phthalo blue (gs) or phthalo turquoise. I love using it for black shiny beatles (I love painting insects) Potters pink and caput mortum mixes with various cobalt colours or cerulean is also beautiful. Phthalo turquoise or phthalo green (bs) with quin rose or magenta makes beautiful inky dark blue. So many moody and muted colours to mix with your selections here, so many textures and hues to explore. I know you will love every minute of it.

    So lovely to see the actual colours from the haul as you swatched them. Paynes Grey is such a versatile colour,one I use a lot in whatever medium I'm working in,(even digitally). I have the Daniel Smith colours of Moonglow and Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Genuine and they are lightfast. I think with the pandemic (and Brexit) affecting supplies I think paint companies are having to change the companies that manufacture their paints,so it could be there may be a batch of these two colours which may not be lightfast and some that are. Cerulean Blue is my staple blue, it's a great mixing colour and I have it in all the mediums I use,and also Naples Yellow is my favoured yellow and is also a great mixing colour. You have a real way of putting your palettes of colour together and they always work well together,and they reflect amazingly in your finished art works.I began with watercolours back in the day and I still love to paint with them now,they do have a slight unpredictability to them which I love and behave like no other paint. It's a really versatile medium that can be used in differnt ways.The fact you are keen to go back to using watercolour I sense means it's the right time on your creative journey to do so.It is good to revisit mediums sometimes as it can reenergise you and how you work.I think we begin with what mateials we can afford and as things take off and we get better so our paints should refelect this evolution, it is worth spending a little more on quality paints once you know how you like to work, what colours you like to create with and long term they are an investment in your creations and in your work as you continue to paint and get better.There is that old notion of 'you get what you pay for' and I think with investing in good quality paints this is certainly true and I find knowing you are working with the best,it somehow enhances your enjoyment of painting with them and am sure it also enhances the quality of your finished work too. Looking forward to part three! and also too seeing all these new colours in your future paintings.

      Thanks Matt. :) That's interesting about your Moonglow and Sleeping Beauty Turquoise paints - it's nice to hear from someone that they have actually found them to be lightfast! As usual, I agree with everything you've written here; thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights!

    • @avirtualcanvas7584
      @avirtualcanvas7584 3 роки тому

      @@NatashaNewtonArt I have a feeling it is down to the effects of the Pandemic on suppliers and maufacturers.I suspect Daniel Smith have had to source another company to create their paints or who supplies them,and I think that there will be batches of these two paints that wil be light fast and some that won't,it wil depend if you get a set of Daniel Smith paints that are made now or from a batch that maybe have been in stock (In a warehouse) for a while.It will just be 'luck of the draw' so to speak when you buy these two paints,perhaps more so if you buy them online, if you go to a shop in person they might have a stock of these paints they've had for a while so you maybe more likely to get some that are lightfast.

    Hi Natasha. Thanks for your channel. New chic here from Australia!
    Just to let you know, that when I did a workshop with Jane Blundell, we painted the blocked in colour of a building in a glaze of the granulating and lifetable goethite, let it dry and did a layer of her Jane's grey as shadow as another glaze.
    This was really something different to using Payne's Grey, hers is such a clean glaze, which surprised me as it is made with granulating pigments.

    It does seem that there are very different results in lightfast tests. My hypothesis is that some window panes may have more UV protection than others resulting in the different outcomes. I don't always like to put glass over my paintings, but if I use Moonglow or some of the other colors that Kimberley Crick has found to have lightfastness issues, I'll use UV glass or varnish to protect them. Beautiful colours! I find only some of my primateks are hard to rewet, in particular those with shimmers, but again not all of them.
    The Sodalite genuine apparently is one of the components of Lapis Lazuli [according to Daniel Smith website]. But to see more of the blue tone you need less of the pigment, I find it looks almost black and the stunning granulation is lost when the mix is too intense. Try next time with more water, the colour comes alive!
    Please do the lightfastness for the Sleeping Beauty, I am so curious as the reviews are mixed. I will try doing mine from the dot card set Mineral Marvels, I wonder if there was a bad batch and the colour has been improved. Only one way to find out. :)

    I have 10 primatek paints in pans and I don't have an issue with rewetting them. The way you are swatching them is that you used a lot of the mass tone of them. With this it is often hard to see the real difference. The Sodalite will granulate much more than the Payne's grey for example even they are a bit similar in tone. The effects will come out with more water. And as you said you saw swatches which weren't that pigmented of the sleeping beauty sometimes it depends if they used a dot card for it. I don't know why but I had a lot of that issue with dot cards of daniel smith but when I got the paint and even they were dry in the pan I got much more pigmentation out of it. The lunar blue is actually really similar to the blue apatite genuine but the mayan blue genuine have a similar undertone indeed. This swatching video was really relaxing to watch. Thank you for that. There is a good video to how to make swatch cards for watercolour out there. This might be helpful to you. With those you can see the mass tone but also the watered down version, how transparent they are and how good they will be in glazing.

      Thanks, this is very good to hear about the Primatek paints! I'm definitely going to be putting them into pans. I mentioned to my partner Dominic that I should have used more water when I was swatching, but it was just to get a first impression of them and I look forward to experimenting further and adding more water to really see what they can do. I honestly love them all but I'm very excited about Lunar Blue - from my tiny swatch of it I could see that it's something special! I've never tried Blue Apatite Genuine, but it has been on my wishlist for a while. There are people out there who swatch in a way that's so much more technical than how I do it and I enjoy watching them (Dr. Oto Kano springs to mind!). I had so much fun filming this video though. :)

      @@NatashaNewtonArtI don't think someone would really need both lunar blue and blue apatite but as a horder of indigo, Payne's grey and indanthrone blue who am I to judge if someone gets both? For myself I don't really enjoy the lunar blue that much and I don't know why. I have other mixtures with pbk11 from Rembrandt fo example (their dusk colours) and even I like how they all are looking swatched I don't use them really often. Maybe the separation between the base colour and the black granulation is too harsh for my taste I don't know. But I have a really soft spot for the Sodalite genuine and the purpurite genuine. And I enjoy both the methodical swatching same as just chat and look what the colours will do as an approach to videos. 🙂

    Jacksons say on their website that their tubes of watercolours are made with honey which is is similar to M. Graham, the brand I use. The advantage is that when you squeeze some from the tube into your palette it will stay wet for a very long time, in fact it won’t dry completely at all if you have a palette with a lid. I find this saves time in the rewetting process.
    I have not tried the Jacksons paints so I cannot say how they behave with respect to the rewetting but Sennelier are also putting honey in theirs so they could be rebranding.

    Howdy, thank you for sharing the swatches. It helps me target my next tube of paint 🎨. (Avid color hunter). Also, I’ve heard from another UA-cam artist that companies use museum conditions when rating lightfastness. This is because of the assumption that it will be kept in archival conditions (frame with UV protection). I also know that there is a difference between fugitive colors and non fugitive pigments.

    Hi Natasha, this was great fun and relaxing to see all the swatches, thanks! As I am just starting experimenting with watercolours II was curious about why moonglow seems to have some green granulation. I have seen the same with one of my Roman Szmal (Violet Shadow). Do you know why this happens?

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Emma! I think it's because those colours are made from several different pigments, so that when they granulate the individual colours show themselves. For example, Moonglow is a mix of three pigments, one of which is Viridian. I hope that answers your question! :)

    Hi, I recently found your channel and I absolutely love your videos! Can't wait for the limited palettes that you come up with :)
    I also wanted to ask if the Venetian Red by Jackson's art that you swatched is some kind of out of production colour? I can only tell you that I bought the Jackson's watercolours very recently, so I doubt they've changed the formula in that time, although of course they could have done. Something I now do to all my primateks and other colors I know dry hard like potters pink is add about 2 to 3 drops of honey off a tooth pick to the half pan after filled and mix well. I’ve never got them to runny and they rewet so much better. If you have questions on which specific ones tend to dry hard just ask and I’ll tell you.
    Sennellie changed the tubes because the earlier batches had their branding on the tube. They make them for Jackson’s and the colors aren’t all the same as their own brand. From my experience the Jackson’s brand are a lesser quality and I can tell the difference but they are still a good buy.

      @allisoncoles 3 роки тому +1

      The thing to consider is what are you testing for? UV lights vary in their output. If you want to compare one colour to another you would ideally want to do them under the same light. Also, since you’d be quite close to the source the distribution of the light would not necessarily be even. However you decide to test remember to do a duplicate set of swatches and put them in an envelope in a drawer or between the pages of a thick book where they will be protected from any light - this will be your control (make sure to let the swatches dry completely, maybe a day or 2 before putting them away). Personally I would suggest a sunny window ledge as this will be more representative of a real world scenario.
