Why did you decide to buy a Cinema VS DSLR camera or visa versa?
Matti Haapoja so good!
Matti Haapoja also, I have both haha. Depends what I’m shooting. Commercials, big gigs and things like that... cinema all day long.
Run and gun, one man, UA-cam... dslr
I didn't know Cinema was an option at the time as I was into Photography!
I decided to buy the a7III, also I loved that intro song
DSLR as I've always been photography first and well, I got my first real camera just before DSLR was a viable video option but now that the technology is better integrated I just really love the form factor of a DSLR.
I was a Corp. Advertising Photographer from 1979-2010 when I retired. I shot 30sec TV commercials on 35mm motion to Print, Packaging, Billboards on 2-1/4, 4x5 and 8x10 you name it. Although technology has changed I believe that the job can be done just as well on mid-priced gear as to high-end. Ex. I had classmates with $2,000 Sinar 8x10's who couldn't get a job while I shot my first $2,000,000 print/packaging ad campaign for Phonemate with a $150 Calumet 4x5, a single strobe and a cardboard makeshift softbox. Master your tools/craft.
Any recommendations on learning and certain tools to master? Thanks for any advice you’re willing to part with with 😂🙏🏻
6:51 starts talking about cinema vs dlsr
He's always trying to act like Peter, he should be him self
Thank you!!!!
Thank god for comments
Thank you. No one can get TTFP anymore
Bruh...
I’m going to buy a cinem.....(checks wallet) I love my DSLR! haha.
Caleb Frink same😂
I don't have money even for a DSLR camera 😔
Caleb Frink Blackmagic pocket cinema 4k for 1300$
k
@@JaspreetSinghArtist canon c100 mkII for cheaper on ebay, its older but its still sick
I just found this video ... I got a chuckle when you said "I hope the truck doesn't mess up the audio" .... you live on a sound stage compared to Saigon ... this city has a constant background noise and frequent loud noises from who knows what. It is the biggest challenge facing an vlogger or location film maker here. Enjoyed your video very much
Recently got a BMPCC (right before they announced the 4k) for my youtube videos, and love it, mostly because I love color grading and dont mind the extra workflow, also I work mostly out of my bedroom haha
That’s awesome!
holy shoot. its Rudy! big fan of your awkward sketch work!
Always start with a Dslr or mirrorless in 2018. In couple of years you'll understand if u need a Cinema Camera or not
I agree, no need starting at the high-end of things! If shooting photography I think film photography is the best way to start!
Yea good way to go for sure
Hell naw. Buy a cinema if you plan on making cinema.
Good advice
Amen... I tell people this all the time. Solid advise.
Thank you for taking the time to explain all this. It is super helpful! No matter how many of your videos I watch, I almost always pick up a new idea or new understanding of equipment, editing, filming, etc. I really appreciate it!
So good! 🙌🏻
This was very informative, thank you! No messing about, no trying to prove yourself, just facts and a great personality making it a breeze to watch :)
“It doesn’t matter what camera you use, as long as you know why you’re using it”. Love it. Perfect :)
Size doesn't matter, it's how you use it ha ha!
the sound effects and music buildup to the mosquito landing on your face was very clever and funny as F#$%, great work
You are just so good at doing this...you are my film school....I thank you for all of your work over the years....
Content rich video man! Thanks, this helps me figure out what camera im gonna upgrade to for the bigger projects im going to tackle for my channel!
Most people rave about cars and houses they can't afford. I rave about the camera I can't afford lol.
I want to be able to say this
I love that from the rig to the table shot...
It's the little things that count
Thanks for the educational video, Matti! It was helpful to hear a balanced argument for both sides, especially from someone who works in the doc/dp world. There are so many good camera bodies available, and now it's a little more clear about how to navigate those options.
Chances upon your vid, then checked out the channel and subbed because you have a good narrative, great shot locations, a compelling story in every video and just a lotta fun to watch! Hope to pick up some videography lessons along the way as I’m Super new to this video thing.
Thanks so much for this! great insight into this subject!!!
Hyvää Päivää Matti ! Excellent explanation of a topic that has always puzzled me !
Great Matti, Good intel and video. Thank You
Always learning from your channel. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and helping creators.
Matti, it's like you read my mind. This has been my most interested topic of all time!!! Thank you!!
This is one of the most insightful videos you’ve made Matti!
I’ve been following your IG and UA-cam channel for so long. Learnt a lot from you. Can’t wait to start practicing when I’m able to afford a big cam like yours. For now I’m using smooth Q and filmic pro.
Great perspective and very informative.
Thank you for this video, super informative!!!
Inspiring, informational video @Matti thanks!
Hey Matti can you tell me what articulating arm you're using for the smallhd 502? I like what it's locked in on as well, thanks man!
Quick and to the point. Nice.
Always love your vids Matti!
Thank you!
Hi Matti -- love your vids. On the C300 and Sigma 18-35, can you use the zoom with a rocker or is it done manually?
Easyrig 🤔 You definitely taught me something!! Thanks.
loving that intro!
Evan Ranft I literally just finished watching your newest video. 😂😂
Love your work
Thanks man!
Evan leaving a reply on Matti's video, ah yeah!
Nice comparison, it's always interesting to see how different people approach the same art. I agree that meeting people is one of my favorite parts of being in the industry!
Great video! Is this the Easyrig Mini? I wonder if it would work with the C200 too? I used it on the Sony FS700 but those tings r a bit more bulky
Great video Matti! What I notice working for government is whenever CTV comes in to do interviews they often bring an FS7 along with 2 A7 series cameras. So it seems like they like a mix of both.
Stoked for you buddy
6:52 Gave me a heart attack tho! 😂
Very good video Matti! We have the same C300 MKII set up except my main lens is the Canon 17-55 f2.8. Highly recommend this lens... Keep up the good work.
Great video! I have always wanted to make films but I am having trouble deciding what camera to get. I can't decide between Canon, Sony, or Panasonic or black magic pocket cinema camera. Do you have any recommendations for a beginner? The most I am willing to spend is $700. Thanks for any help you can give me.
I started with dslr(5dm2, I'm a stills shooter too and had this camera for stills first) and did a handful of smaller but national broadcast commercials with them, then moved more towards renting(for the same client) anything form Canon C100 Mrk1, Sony FS700 with External recorder(4k Raw), to RED. Now I don't do as much video but I'm still doing a fair amount and I've found myself getting tired of the big rigs and am making the switch from Canon to Sony with my SLR/Mirrorless systems trying to get my gear smaller. These recent mirrorless cameras have gotten so good that 90% of the time, they are good enough! Especially if you are a 1 or 2 man crew.
So fun to see you working together with Johnny! Hope the project doing well! Looking forward to see the results.
He’s awesome 🙌🏻
Excellent gear breakdown. Totally agree about the cons of using cinema cameras- I love the image quality but all the attachments and bigger gimbals really slow you down. Like you said, it just depends on the project and how you're using it
another SICK video BROOO!
Thanks dude 🙌🏻
Great video Matti. Congrats on the recent growth. You deserve it man. You're honest and extremely knowledgeable. Keep up the great work!
Btw easyrigs are incredible. So helpful with weight distribution. Helps focus on the craft instead of wondering when you get to put down the heavy ass cinema camera lol
Matti should I go buy the 80d to start recording or should I wait because I here a 90d is coming soon? Right now I have a 70d, t5i and t3i
Perfect timing on my lunch break!
When I first started in photography a got a ghetto cannon rebel just because I couldn’t afford anything else. At first when I started I was bitter about not having the nicer camera and then I realized that it doesn’t matter what gear you got if you aren’t taking any pictures. So I just went out and started shooting anything I could and then I actually got some good stuff.
Really interesting! Cheers Matti
Would love to hear what you think of sony vs canon mirrorless for pro filmmakers who eventually are hoping to get a cinema camera. Lens advantages? Which system would you invest in?
Awesome vid Matti! What is the best, or let's better say a good DSLR camera which as a really good dynamic range? Is the canon 1DX Markii a good choice?
Hey quick question, I'm starting a podcast and I want clips on UA-cam.. I only need video would you recommend getting something like the Black magic 4k or 6k? Or just get a cheaper camera like g85, g7, g9? Please answer I need help bad.. nice vid by the way
Thnx for another informative awesome video!
Man that rig is dope.. Thumbnail is awesome
when did you step up from just shooting DSLR to bigger set ups?
That intro is not what i'd expect from you Matti, but I'm super stoked you mixed it up a bit. Good show!
I'm brand new to all of this and trying to understand it all. What kind of camera was used to make the intro? It is amazing!
It really surprised me to learn that your cinema camera has a crop censor. I'm now less eager to upgrade from my 80d. Also, I love that SIGMA lens. Just picked one up myself. Thanks for making such great videos!
What was that time-code synchronization box called? I would very much like to buy one.
Very helpful information again :)
I had a sinking feeling in my stomach at 6:51 and then a sigh of relief!
😂
OMG, me too.
Prof. Vallejo yep. A few days ago my a7iii fell over pretty hard with an hdmi and usb cable plugged in... It broke both cables which were $25 each. Then yesterday when the new cables came in I figured out the hdmi port on the new Sony is also broken... I had a nerve racking few hours wondering if Sony’s standard warranty would cover it, to my surprise they covered it. I sent it in for repairs and should get it back in a week.
I’m just starting out as a wedding shooter. I have 2 Canon m50’s and I’m looking at the Canon xf400 camcorder as my main camera. Would this be a good choice? If everything goes as planned and I can continuing growing my business I’ll work my way up to a more pro level cinema camera and the xf400 will become my B camera.
muy bueno el video... me gustaría ver una comparativa en campo y en crudo y por último en post-produccion (editado) de igual manera a los dos archivos. gracias y saludos
Hey Matti, I'm thinking about doing a Documentary. Would my DSLR Canon 7 Rebel would be a fit starting out since I don't have a big budget.
Isn't the c300 full frame? How did you pair the sigma with it? Have the same lend on my 80d , amazing!
You can use the same Timecode-Tool on DSLR Cameras, too :) It generates an Audio-TC, that can be read with the software belonging to the Tentacle-Tool.
Matti, You’ve not touched on pro camcorders like to xf405 which seems to have some really great features. Would really like to hear your opinion of a camera in this form factor.
Great information Matti ! :)
1:15 this made me itch so much 😅
omg i didn't even see that lol
I'm using the GH5/GH5s with the Atomos. The Gh5s can jam timecode and Panasonic, as well as other companies, make XLR with phantom power options too. Also, you want to have a way to edit 10 bit, 12 bit 4k and RAW video from a cinema camera.
Awesome video Matti, you also could have used peters cool hockey Canadian self stick for your cinema camera lol for vloging
😂
Hi Matti!!! What do you think about Black magic cinema 4k? Its a good tool to start to make better quality videos??? Or this is cheap but is no good???
This helped me so much Matti! Cheers ... I am naturally indecisive so this has really given me a greater understanding.

i would like to have a cinematic camera for documents, for companies, music films, wwich kind of camera with budget around $10 000 should i buy?
Big uup man i always liked ur videos and work
When that bug landed on your head and the epic music played I thought u were done for😂
hi matti, love your videos :)
Thanks for info
Thank you....All is clear
So Matti, in your wedding class you were working with a GH4 or 5 and a Sony dslr. How would setup be now that you ate farther along and have gotten much deeper with the Canons?
This was a very helpful video. I am weighing my options and leaning to a full-frame mirrorless, but haven't really decided yet. I get that cinema cameras are built from the ground up for video recording. It makes sense that they are good at what they are designed to do. What puzzles me is a remark made at about 9:26 to the effect that cinema cameras have better dynamic range than their mirrorless counterparts. When comparing a full frame mirrorless camera to a cinema camera with a super 35 sensor, the mirrorless has the larger sensor. I would have thought this would translate to better dynamic range. Is this not the case? Thanks again for the video.
6:51 bout gave me a heart attack! 😂
Doesnt the Gh5 have most of these features? Minus of course the AF and Dynamic Range? I mean you can record 400mb 4k for $2k.
Thanks for this video ! Very interesting stuff just found your channel & subbed. Looking at upgrading my camera gear, waiting to see if Canon will release a successor to the Canon EOS 80D. Cheers man entering you giveaway here.
what is the first song in the beginning?
I'm interested in creating cinematic videos and I'm currently investing in a camera with a budget of 3k (excludes price of a lens). So far, through multiple UA-cam videos, the most recommended is the Canon Eos 5D Mark IV with a Sigma 35mm lens. Is there a better camera and lens for me to purchase?
Yo Matti 1 question 80d or 6d mark ii for beginner camera?
6:10 yeah. I definitely want me one those. Wow, I appreciate back saving technology
It’s awesome
Yay new video from matty!!😍😍
Yay 🎉
Matti Haapoja thanks buddy!!👍😊
Shooting 2k or 4k for the Doc? I know the C300mkii has really great 12bit in 2k. Thanks!
what is this articulate arm for the screen? I've been looking for one for a long long time
Interesting comparison, good content like aways.
I have a c100 mk2 love it also just got an ezyrig 10 yrs too late though as my back is screwed 3 surgeries later
i was literally thinking of selling my 5d4 for something like a c100mk2... should i do it? i do small budget corporate shoots.
what do you think about black magic pocket cinema 4k which is going to shoot 4k 60fps , 1080p 120fps raw footage and gonna cost 1300$ .
The audio for the mosquito was perfect. "Oh my god, kill it. Kill it. Kill it already. Oh god how can he not FEEL THAT?! KILL IT YOU MONSTER! Ahh yes. Wait, what's he talking about, again?"
LOVE the dedicated video features of cinema cameras (I’ve only used the C100 II), but prefer DSLRs.
The Easy Rig is going to be the new GorillaPod for vloggers with cinema cameras 😉
Love to see Tom Buck in the comments down here from 5 years ago. Success supports persistence.
Tentacles are so clutch, especially for bigger projects like this. They've been a huge part of my workflow ever since I got them.
I had the C300 mki back in the days. But I was doing a lot of run n gun stuff, and I just couldnt handle the weight of it. Now im shooting on the Sony
Yea it totally depends on what your filming 😊 I rarely use my c300 nowadays except in the office
I love my little Sony a6300. It pulls out great photos and footage and is very small, light and portable. I own the Smallrig cage and have added monitor, battery pack, handle, mic, etc.
