While I absolutely love the footage I achieve with my Ronin-M, I use my HD-2000 for select projects, as every tool has its purpose! When we are in harsh weather or have to hike/bike miles out, it's the glidecam all day. I also bring my glidecam to every shoot that I use my Ronin-M just as a backup, since it'll always work. Great video as always Matti!
I started with a glidecam but moved to a gimbal once they became more affordable ("affordable" on a professional level LOL). BUT you just made me miss my glidecam with this video, though my cheap cametv single is pretty epic for a little gimbal (but def couldn't handle the weight of a 1DX)
TravelFeels Also have a old mighty Glidecam HD-2000 aswell as a Ronin-M. It’s great how fast you can start shooting with a glidecam. Those extra few seconds for a Ronin for turning on is not equally nice as a glidecam thats always availible. Pros and cons with both, but I’am very glad that i kept my HD-2000, which is so easy to stabilize as you get use to it.
the old xr 2000 gets pulled out time to time depending on situation and conditions. I said id get rid of it once I got my gimbal but just couldn't let her go, glad i didn't. xD
everything is slow mo.. thats not the best way to show a Gimbel result. everyone today is doing the same slow motion shot, its about time to show some new stuff!
EVERYONE-- it is so boring now. This is why people come here and think gimbals are good. Try real time and see how much bouncing they do. Slow mo Slow mo. It is cheating like playing piano and keeping your foot on the sustain pedal.
Glidecam is the way!!!! It's got such a natural movement to it, I rock the same exact one, got it 4 years ago Edit: Interesting to see how you hold it. I've always held it very loosely with 2 fingers above the bearings to make sure it doesn't get out of wack or whatever, kinda just a guide. Never knew you could actually put your other hand to practical use by moving it from left to right
This is some great information, and I know this is an old video now, but I wanted to address a negative about gimbals that you had. When you said (9:18) "probably the biggest reason" was that you have the quick release plate on the stedicam, but can't do that on a gimbal. You can. I just got a gimbal. The DJI Ronin-SC for my Canon M50. I use it with a Neewer brand quick release plate, and it balanced just fine. So long as I don't switch lenses (which you have to rebalance regardless), I NEVER have to balance this thing again. It folds up just fine, and balances VERY nicely with the quick release plate, so all I have to do is snap the camera on it, unlock the arms, and turn it on and it's ready to go immediately. I don't want you to think I'm being negative about your video. I really like your stuff. You are very informative and I've used your gimbal videos as tutorials on how to use them in the field. I also own a stedicam. A $100 Neewer brand one. It works just fine on DSLRs, as well as my M50 and M3 with the quick release plates. It's just not as high of quality as Glidecam lol Works fine though, and I love it.
Dude you are amazing! I cannot even tell you how much I have learnt from you about film making and if I ever thought I knew how to do something, you always came up with better version of it. That's what I like about you Matti, you'll make anything look good and you'll be like I do that every day, super easy! Damn man keep it up!
I can definitely see the value in both. I just picked up the Zhiyun Crane 2 and I am very impressed with how easy it was for me to pick it up and start using it and I like how small it is. I also really like the controls if you're using a Canon. I thought about the Steadycam but I was concerned about the learning curve. Jason
I (still) use a SteadiCam, some of the main reasons are how easy it's to use and the price, to be quite honest. Got one for like, €45 and it's pretty ok for my Lumix DC-FZ82/EOS 1200D. :P
Thanks for the tips. I got a Neewer steadycam for about $60 that's been working nicely for my first one. Easily supports an 80D with 18-35mm Sigma lens. It will hold up to about 6.5 lbs and was easy to balance. The only drawback I've noticed is the plate doesn't attach easily to the base, and the left/right adjustments are inconvenient.
I've been using my Glidecam HD2000 for the last 8 years now. It holds my 1DX2 just fine. Although, it's missing a bunch of screws and has more than a few battle wounds. Hopefully I'll upgrade to the DG signature series at some point.
i got one of these really cheap 80-100 bucks steadycams on ebay for 30 bucks used. first i didn't get it balanced, but i recently got it about perfectly set up and it is buttery smooth. and i can also shoot super low angles with my setup, which is super dope. i still have to practice the catwalk but then i'll be good to go! nice video! gotta get my hands on some quick release plates i think..
i use a tarion steadycam with 1 of the standard weights and 2 metal plates on each end. my main camera is the good old lumix g7 and i use it with a rode video mic. hope i could help you.
practice practice practice! i had it for about 2 years until i finally found the right balance. but if your setup isn't heavy enough, take some weight off the steadycam weight thing and shorten the lenght of the weight arm or however it's called. you'll find a way for sure!
I literally just bought a used Glidecam HD-2000 with a Manfrotto Quick Release Plate for $250 USD this morning before my shoot with a paying client. This is my first Glidecam and it's a huge step up from my $50 Amazon Stabilizer. I didn't believe that I would find one locally, but they're out there. You just have to keep looking!

Love it guy, I'm pro steadicam as well. I purchased a motorized gimbal only to outweigh it when I upgraded my camera. On the plus side I'm not worried about breaking the damn thing either, they are built so solid! I get additional weights from the hardware store to balance mine perfectly and scratch the settings into the metal so set up is easy! just adjust everything to the settings I have for different lenses and its good to go!
Thanks Matti, good to see that it is an option to go let tech rather than have to consider expensive electronic gear that has to be pampered. Great job

TravelFeels Hey I wanted to ask this question: I have small UA-cam channel and I’m interested in video and photography in general, and all I have is a smartphone. So should I invest in a cheap camera like a t3i or should I just save up and invest the money I have at the moment in a tripod and some lights?
Matti this was SO TIMELY! First video I’ve seen (without searching) about the benefits of a steadicam over a gimbal. Also, I realise I don’t know crap lol, but I just wanted to mention how much more concise you were in this video. Made it more fun to watch. More of your personality came through, no rambling, and super informative. I love your videos but this one was extra awesome! Cheers!
A Steadicam is the brand of Gimbal, much like how Glidecam is also a brand of gimbal. What you’re referring to is the preference of a mechanically manual gimbal stabilizer, over a mechanically motorized gimbal stabilizer. In short, a Steadicam IS a gimbal. This is the kind of misinformation that is plaguing the UA-cam filmmaking community.
thomaskazuya we still call the old school manual gimbals "Steadicam" because that was the first brand to introduce them. By default, pretty much every camera operator refers to the portable electronic 3 axis gimbals with follow focus, as a gimbal...in short.
Although what you are saying is totally true, I am also sure that you are aware what people call these equipments and the title is given for the sake of easier access for the ones looking for this kind of information. Therefore, I can't pass without saying "you must be really fun at parties" :))
You're right. We should really be calling electronic gimbals, "electronic gimbals". Totally agree. Pity there a catchy name like "tronbals" didn't become popular.
Terminologies also evolve. While technically true , things change over time. It happens forever in the industry. For example I am going to make a record. No one is making a record today--yet the terminologies has not changed. Another example is CUT. Cut is only for film, you do not cut anything anymore--still we use the terms. They change because language evolves.
It is a great point about electronics Matti, I can't imagine how short the batteries would have lasted while you were in the polar circle! :-P I'd still take a gimbal over a glidecam any day. Used a glidecam system for nearly 8 years and the moment I tried my first gimbal, there was no looking back. I may actually do a giveaway of my current glidecam if there's enough interest. Just because I no longer use it doesn't mean someone else shouldn't!
Soo happy you made this video. I started looking into a steady cam last week and really couldn’t find a good video. I thought about sending you a message asking for one. Then bam, you post one. :D
I'm getting really excited about including film into my photography repertoire and this is one more incentive. Gimbles seem intimidating to start with whereas this looks a lot more my speed.
The thing I love most about Glidecams compared to Gimbals is their constant reliability. I’m a very run and gun on the go shooter and Gimbals always have to be perfectly calibrated. They both take time but once the glide cam is set it’s just ready to go
Excited for you to hit 300K- well deserved! I used a steadicam in Iceland but it was so windy it rendered a lot of the footage unusable but it is normally a very reliable piece of kit!
Matti, great stuff! I bought a Ronin M last week and am still working my few brain cells around it! But, I have a glidecam as a left over bit of a whole body armour kit, I bought that was just too big for me. Sold the huge hydraulic arm thingy, but kept the glidecam. I have never known how to use it, hilariously using the one arm grip you refer to here, thinking “this isn’t good”. So now I have a great glidecam I can use with my DSLR now you have shown the way! Many thanks. Great presentation, as ever!
Back in the old days when digital 8mm was the new, in thing for consumer/ prosumer, I started using my Bogen monopod as a steadycam. With monopod collapsed I would hold it by the wrist strap. Not strapped around my wrist but with strap in my hand with at least an inch between hand and monopod free. I still use it today . Adjusting a little of the monopod leg out or in will adjust the balance to the weight of the camera.
1. It's much heavily. 2. Bigger. 3. Doesn't stabilize, you must hold it tight. If you're shaky your videos will be shaky so this "steadicam" it's just a stick with weights. 4. It's it's more expensive. 5. You've put some nature scene with transition effects to make views and likes.
This really inspired me to give my steadicam another go. I bought one for about $60 on Amazon but it was a no name Chinese product that never included instructions. The idea of calibrating it was too daunting that I've been considering selling it and buying a gimbal instead. So I'll hold off a little longer and give my steadicam a go.
I bought one of those curved steadicam things. I find it quite annoying to use. I really think a straight one like this is the way to go. Thanks for sharing this. And I am sure you will admit, each to their own. People can get amazing video using all sorts of equipment. It's about what you're comfortable with, and then just going out there and filming great stuff. Keep up the cool videos 💪
Man, feels like I've gone back in time! I used to own the Glidecam HD 2000 and have the HD 4000 laying around. Switched to the Ronin when it first came out and now using the Zhyuin Cranes. One thing that I've learnt from using the Glidecams is that the way you walk and approach your shots are very important. And the skills I've learnt from using the Glidecam has made my gimbal work even better. Thanks for the upload!
Hurrah FINALLY got my new glidecam stabilised after following your instructions. Every other video I found didn't do the set it down then lift it up part which was essential in testing it is stabilsed
Thanks for this video! So many people tell me to get a gimbal... but I love my steady cam and don't see the need to get a gimbal. It's great to hear from other steady cam users! 👌👌👍
You’re shooting at a high frame rate, so the shaking and side to side doesn’t show when you slow it down, how ever when you shoot with a only 30fps camera, that’s an issue, we don’t have slowmo
YAAAPPPP!! Still using a Glidecam! I have the hd series. I would say the car series is awful but it look like you have the plate with the fine adjust knobs. Makes it so so much easier!
Lol I literally just bought a 50 dollar Steadicam, and have had nothing but trouble with it. I still think that they look better than gimbals though, guess I need to save my pennies to afford a better one once I return the other one! :) a 14 year old filmmaker...
I actually prefer glide cam's as well. I have a Crane and it's good, but it's much more high maintenance. Glide cam is as you say easy to pop on and off and carry around or lean up against a tree/backpack when not being used. Definitely takes WAY more practice though, but when you get good with it in many ways it works better than a gimbal.
One thing not mentioned in this video which Matti used throughout is the use of slow motion (Recording at higher frame rate then confirming to lower project frame rate) which always makes shots look smoother and less bouncy.
The walk is hard but doable. The supertramp team are notorius for using glidecams in almost all of their short films. Their footage is close to none. Love the tips Matti.
Thanks for the tip of using the 2nd hand under the bearing! I have watched so many other videos about working the stabilizers and I've gotten the balance right, but my shots were still coming out a bit off. Using the 2nd hand has improved my shots so much! Thanks again!
you don\t need a gimbal or steady cam really, most of your clips/videos are slow mo, i don't really see any point or benefit of any stabilizers if you tend to shoot high frame rate and use 1-3 sec of footage per clip in your edits lol. i seen better edits that make proper use of stabilizers, gimbal or steady cams. After all they both will work, 200usd for pipes and metal weights id still get a gimbal, you don't really need a stabilizer hand held will do since you only take 1-2 secs of high frame rate clip footage. I though i heard natural, slo mo is not natural, i have not seen a normal frame rate with placing your camera on a tripod, show us some real gimbal wrok no slo mo pls auto focus is so bad for a 6k camera though. i like the hotel and still like your videos just my 2 cents
The Cinema Monologues - dang what are you watching??? Haha, I’ve seen movies shot with gimbals, and you probably have to, and didn’t realize it. It’s all about making the story the main focal point and making the audience not aware of the camera movement.
Some fine pointers in there and what I like more about steadycam over gimbals is that you get instant response to everything you do, much more accurate in every way. Sorry but I need to say there I hate auto focus just as much as I hate auto iris and auto white balance, Sorry :)
im currently shopping for the right gimball for me in my budget....this gave me a second thought and a new perspective. INSANE location btw. absolutely stunning adventure captured gorgeously. cheers!
MAAAAAA BOYYY! I feel like your vlogs are now becoming more YOU. More of your original style - inspired by others - but still your true creative mind is coming out now! Awesomeness. P.S. I use a cheap steadicam and it is AWESOME
if u're good with tuning software, u can make exact "organic" look with gimbal, as well as exponential responsiveness to use for quick-pan shots when u need it. i hate small shaky movement which glidecams have on horizontal plane (as shown in many shots here)
I shot weddings (video) in the late 2000's, I used to run a Sony prosumer camera on one of these steadicams, with an arm reinforcement that it locked into. I'd shoot all day with the thing...lol. Today, while video quality is certainly good, it's still hard to match the shots I got with the old school methods. I have to say though, talk about shock and awe for me in recent yrs when I shoot with a Note8 on a frikkin Osmo 2...I'm like...man, 10yrs ago if I had this...lol. So many options these days.
I have a GlideGear myself...a little bit hard to learn how to balance it well at the beginning, specially if you have no quick release plate...but I love the shots I can make...and everywhere you get the attention of people (specially who give you job) because they like to see a good steadycamer working. It´s like an old reliable tool that always let you have good shots, everywhere with any cam.
I was a band nerd in high school and majored in music education in college. In marching band circles, we called that walk the "glide step". It's helpful when you are trying not to bust your lip open on a brass mouthpiece
Back in about 2011/ 2012 I think it was, I bought an Indian version of this on ebay for about £130, even with the dedicated wrist support it was impossible to use anything past 30 seconds, the pain on the hand, wrist and arm were severe, sold it after a week, Matti, you must be superman!
So interesting Matti! Thanks. Have been thinking about investing in a gimbal, but you've made me consider looking at steadicams instead. Top info and thanks for going into so much detail about the pros and cons for each! How cool to stay at the ice hotel! Hope you've warmed up!
I am just planning to buy a glidecam... I'm traveling a lot, and realized the gimbal is too complicated to use in many travel situations, also to sensitive to take care of it all the time... So, nice timing with this video, thanks Matti! I also have a Came TV Optimus for sale in Budapest, if someone is interested... :D
Who else still uses a glidecam???? Oh and sorry for the crap focus on some of the talking shots 😥

aaaannnd slapping a Warp Stabilizer. and done! haha!
You are so right! How could I make a decision when it's always in slow-mo.
I totally agree with you!!!
lol. says he can trust Canon Autofocus, stays out of focus the majority of the video;-)
have You noticed that as well? I did not want to type it here, but you are right.
Lol. Once you see it...
so true even i noticed that and came down to comment when I saw this.
Matti might be using the Lumix GH5 for the talking sections since his Canon 1DX is on the glidecam. AND WE KNOW GH5 SUCKS AT AUTOFOCUS :D -Joonas
HAHAHAHAHHAA
PROTIP: Walk around with a cup of water that is full to the brim. try your hardest not to spill any, Now your a glidecam ninja.

and same videos!
Yeah, probably the only one.
Whaaaat! I-IMPOSSIBLE!!!
very nice, concise, info on using the stabilizer. the drop time, the balancing, the holding, the walking. all in a few minutes.

my thoughts at 6:50
Soo happy you made this video. I started looking into a steady cam last week and really couldn’t find a good video. I thought about sending you a message asking for one. Then bam, you post one. :D
Dude, we have the same Glidecam!! I shoot photos and bought it for video, but honestly it's been sitting on the floor. I need to pick it up!
Matti always has the dope 80s and electro music!
Matti, I so very much appreciate the fact that you take the time to reply to our comments! Thank you so much!
You're welcome! Sorry, it's been a year and I feel like you deserve a response :)
I'm getting really excited about including film into my photography repertoire and this is one more incentive. Gimbles seem intimidating to start with whereas this looks a lot more my speed.
Steadicam Solo - better build, smoother gimbal, and smaller pack (feet flip up) than glidecam.
The thing I love most about Glidecams compared to Gimbals is their constant reliability. I’m a very run and gun on the go shooter and Gimbals always have to be perfectly calibrated. They both take time but once the glide cam is set it’s just ready to go
I absolutely loved the awkward bed scene with Peter! 🤣
Man you absolutely CRUSHED IT with the soundtrack on this one! Love the vids man, keep 'em coming!
Loved the video Matti! Great tips!
I'm still on a glidecam! Thanks for the awesome vid and support for still using manual steady equipment!
Excited for you to hit 300K- well deserved! I used a steadicam in Iceland but it was so windy it rendered a lot of the footage unusable but it is normally a very reliable piece of kit!
It’s sooo close! Yea wind is the worst enemy unfortunately
"That's why I use Canon, I can trust their autofocus." ......is out of focus half of the video. 😅
I've got a Sony a6400 and the focus is really good
Benjamin ill be getting that soon !
Hehe dope video Matti! I haven’t used auto focus on my camera ever since I got it 😂
Thanks sharing what you know Matt! I'm a new film maker and I am just absorbing everything you're teaching!
01:47 🤣🤣🤣 - the shot of you two in the bed....I was watching Peter's and really wanted to see a shot basically exactly like that so thanks!!
Haha 😂
LOL
Great info to take into consideration. Another great advice. Keep it up!
Thanks man! 🙌🏻
Love this Arctic series with everyone! So much fun.
#NotificationSquad. Also, I've been hoping you'd talk about this very topic. Also, didn't even consider getting a Glidecam used! Thanks!
haha, #SquadUp !
Oh yea for sure get it used
This video was posted the day I bought my Velocity Yellow Z06. So cool. I need to get this Glydecam for my Z06 Videos.
Good video, I haven't touched my glidecam for three years now 😳 I like gimbals a lot more
MicBergsma your page died.. your opinion is irrelevant
"I use Canon because I can trust the Autofocus" *Proceeds to an out of focus shot for the next 20 seconds*
Because you're a legend that's why 😂😍🔥
Haha 😂 thanks man!
TravelFeels haha it's true though.
Fantastic video as usual Matti, raised some good points 😊
Thanks 😊
Hurrah FINALLY got my new glidecam stabilised after following your instructions. Every other video I found didn't do the set it down then lift it up part which was essential in testing it is stabilsed
So now I bought a Moza Air and than u upload this video?!
Haha 😂 sorry! But the MOZA air is great too! One of my fav small gimbals so far
Thanks Matti. I’ve been thinking about buying a steady cam and I think I will now go ahead 👍
June 2020: HD-2000 is now $400 on Amazon!
Matti that intro is dope and the tune is the best ever
I use a glidecam because I can’t afford a gimbal yet 😂
Thanks for this video! So many people tell me to get a gimbal... but I love my steady cam and don't see the need to get a gimbal. It's great to hear from other steady cam users! 👌👌👍
You’re shooting at a high frame rate, so the shaking and side to side doesn’t show when you slow it down, how ever when you shoot with a only 30fps camera, that’s an issue, we don’t have slowmo
I thought it was just me
YAAAPPPP!! Still using a Glidecam! I have the hd series. I would say the car series is awful but it look like you have the plate with the fine adjust knobs. Makes it so so much easier!
You should check out the Devin Graham Signature edition Glidecam! It makes low shots a million times easier!
🙌🏻
Jackson Hayes Why is that?
DGS - the best Steadicam in the world. I recommend.
Daniel Ax you can move the gimbal ring to the bottom
I came into the comments to say exactly this!
Wasn’t expect the music video opening. Freakin’ smooth.
Lol I literally just bought a 50 dollar Steadicam, and have had nothing but trouble with it.
I still think that they look better than gimbals though, guess I need to save my pennies to afford a better one once I return the other one! :)
a 14 year old filmmaker...
Haha some of them are too cheap so they don’t work well
Chinook Productions my $70 one works great. Make sure it’s balanced and practice all the time
I actually prefer glide cam's as well. I have a Crane and it's good, but it's much more high maintenance. Glide cam is as you say easy to pop on and off and carry around or lean up against a tree/backpack when not being used.
Definitely takes WAY more practice though, but when you get good with it in many ways it works better than a gimbal.
Early watcher squad!
squuaadddd
One thing not mentioned in this video which Matti used throughout is the use of slow motion (Recording at higher frame rate then confirming to lower project frame rate) which always makes shots look smoother and less bouncy.
“Heel toe, heel toe like a ninja”- 😂👌🏽👌🏽👍🏽 Put in on a tshirt!!
The walk is hard but doable. The supertramp team are notorius for using glidecams in almost all of their short films. Their footage is close to none. Love the tips Matti.
1:47 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I though i heard natural, slo mo is not natural, i have not seen a normal frame rate with placing your camera on a tripod, show us some real gimbal wrok no slo mo pls
auto focus is so bad for a 6k camera though.
i like the hotel and still like your videos just my 2 cents
I bought a steady Cam today and this video is juts too helpful.
It even made me to subscribe at last.
I really dislike how gimbal movement looks. Makes everything feel like a cheap rap video. #Steadycam4life
Yea it’s a different look 😊 not bad but different
I'll say it's bad, but that's because I'm not a kind and polite soul like you Matti. Keep up the excellent work !
THE ICE HOTEL!
I am really enjoying your channel Matti. Your one of my favourites these days
50th viewer!
🙌🏻
im currently shopping for the right gimball for me in my budget....this gave me a second thought and a new perspective. INSANE location btw. absolutely stunning adventure captured gorgeously. cheers!
That's a "cool" hotel! HA HA
😂
Where is this hotel?
They keep it in a walk-in freezer. ;)
haha that’s punny
MAAAAAA BOYYY! I feel like your vlogs are now becoming more YOU. More of your original style - inspired by others - but still your true creative mind is coming out now! Awesomeness.
P.S. I use a cheap steadicam and it is AWESOME
Dude, I love both you guys but your footage of the ice hotel was dope af.
if u're good with tuning software, u can make exact "organic" look with gimbal, as well as exponential responsiveness to use for quick-pan shots when u need it.
i hate small shaky movement which glidecams have on horizontal plane (as shown in many shots here)
I shot weddings (video) in the late 2000's, I used to run a Sony prosumer camera on one of these steadicams, with an arm reinforcement that it locked into.
Awesome video. Just getting started and still hand holding everything. Can't wait to get a steadicam.
This is good time. I've just started shopping around for camera stabilization and the steadicams look to be the better options.
