Everyone’s talking about selling LUTS and presets, you out here giving BANGING advice on how to be a pro. THANK YOU POTATO JET. Stuff I kind of knew about but hadn’t really invested in.
yeah and it's just 1 microphone, for just 1 purpose :) It's a shotgun mic, nice for isolating sound when interviewing some one, but.... for other purposes, where you need more ambient sound, it's not a very good solution :) There are cheaper, probably just as good mics out there. You can start with ROde mics, and if a job demands better quality, just rent mics like this... Most do that with camera's also... If you just start out, there is no need for 2500USD tripods and 2500 wireless transmission :)
He showing you pro equipment. Buy it if you're a pro. That is, 1) you use it daily, or 2) you rely of it to make money and it cannot fail. 3) it is required to meet industry standards.
My SmallHD has been incredible. I’ve had it for four years and it’s still amazing. Gives me way more confidence in shooting and passion seeing the image look so good as I shoot. I will never shoot without one again.
In my opinion, the wireless system is overkill for indie and low-budget film makers. The third best investment after the tripod and boom mic is lighting; you can't do much without enough light. Bonus investment: a good PC that can edit 4K footage smoothly and complete other tasks like graphic design, VFX, animation, audio editing, music production etc.
I'm a sound designer and mixer and couldn't agree more with the Sennheiser 416. It's my secret weapon mic. Great as a boom, great on cello, great for VO. Well worth it's $1K price.
That was definitely the best "ABRUPT" ending. Enjoyed the content and the fact that you talked about the gear you have NOW, and not what you had when you started. In my opinion, it is something others can look forward too, and set their goals to one day acquire.
Hey man. Just wanted to say, you're videos are awesome and I really appreciate all the work you do for these breakdowns. I'm constantly checking your new and old stuff, keep killing it !!!
Great choices in stuff.. Satchler tripod is a MUST if you are in this for the long haul, and people often overlook audio... would also add the AVX wireless system from Sennheiser if you do on the go interview work with the incredible MKE2 lav's
i know im randomly asking but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost my account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Sonny Brecken Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Grip (Tripods, Stands, Steadicam, Jibs), Audio (Microphones, Pre-Amps, Mixers, Recorders), and Storage (Yes, RAID Arrays and HDD's) are my top 3 investments. Glass and cameras are easily interchangeable based on job, but quality Grip, Audio, and Storage will always be helpful. All of your projects have to be stored somewhere, so that's why storage is essential for me.
The problem with lower budget items is most of them will be dated in a few years or just won't stand the test of time. All of the items he showed could theoretically work for over 10+ years if taken care of. They also could actially be brought to a professional set and wouldn't be laughed off....most budget things would be.
For the fluid head, take a look at the Manfrotto 500 series, particularly the 504HD and the 502. Not as good as the Sachtler, which is pretty much industry standard, but manfrotto makes decent heads. You can usually find kits with matched sticks, but if you don’t go that route, make sure you’re getting a 75mm bowl set up-it will save a lot of time and aggravation leveling the camera. That’s more in the 500-700 range. Cheaper than that? There’s a lot of cheap gear coming out of China these days, but ymmv. I picked up a head and legs from Neewer (on Amazon) when it was on sale for 60 bucks. So far . . . Eh. It doesn’t have a smooth start on the pan, but what do you want for $60? I’ve had it less than 6 months and I can’t speak to its durability.
Matt Jones I agree, the whole point of the video was the basic equipment where it’s long term smart to spend more money. If you spend the bucks upfront on a good head and sticks or on a good shotgun mic, you won’t need to upgrade it as you upgrade your camera system. If you can’t afford the recommended equipment, you make do, but that isn’t the point of the video. There’s thousands of videos reviewing cheaper equipment.
Discovered Potato Jet like 1 month ago. I must say i really like this guy, he has such good energy and perfect amount of humor and seriousness, i just like him alot :) Keep on doing what you do! subscribing right now :)
there's so many other budget gear recommendation videos out there, this is exactly what I needed at this time in my career that could help me with my business in it's early stages. Many thanks man
This is my opinion when it comes to gear: Avoid HDMI, embrace SDI and gear that can handle variable voltage up to 18v power and your accessory gear will last forever. Also pay a sound guy separately ;)
I get you man! I wanted a gimbal, so I saved up, and bought a gimbal (Crane 2). And to make it work better I got: follow focus motor remote follow focus and controller monitor cables for monitor battery for monitor clamp and magic arm cold shoes for mic and I still "need" to get an audio recorder/better mic, wireless mic, and HDMI transmitter/receiver and some NDs and a Polarizer and a dummy battery for my camera so I can power it and my monitor from the same 970 battery you get the point!
That happd to me yesterday! I ended up reshooting a bit because i had hair strands not hair sprayed down! Its the tiny details that make a world of a difference!
Hey Potato Jet! Reckon you could do a video on the business side of filmmaking? Stuff like what to put on an invoice and how to properly quote a client? It's not as interesting as camera comparisons but I think there'd be a lot of people who'd learn a lot from it, I know I would!
Thanks Potato for your impressive content and energetic delivery - you inspire me to be more creative and thanks for sharing your knowledge/experience - well done !
Working 50/50 as a AC and DOP i just invested in a 702 OLED. Having had it for a couple months and expensed it across jobs its almost paid down already. It obv won't last as long as a tripod, but then again i think it his that wonderful balance of safe investments and investments you actually need. I could definitely have bought a nice tripod instead, but this monitor goes me both when i OP and AC, unlike a tripod that would only see half the use. Solid video!
This video is so valuable. I am more of an audio expert, but I can name some tools that I’ve continually used yet were purchased 30 years ago - like my pair of Schoeps MK54 Hypercardiod microphones. Your favs of of the Sennheiser shotgun, the tripod, and the wireless video are sooo good. Thanks so much!
Hey I subscribed to your channel! I see you have a EOS M. I had an M3 and just switched to the M6! I'd love the support even if your channel is over 80x bigger than mine! 😂
You really need or you just really really want? Be honest, you’re among friends here. We understand who understand how want can be so strong it seems like a need. We’re gear heads. If you really need something for a particular project but can’t afford it, consider renting for just that project (and hopefully you can pass the cost on to the client).
No idea on the top 3! Been using a GoPro 5 for the past 2 years. Just upgraded to a GoPro 8 and Nikon D7500 w/18-140mm and Rode Videomicro 😎 it’s an investment 🤪
I loved my MKH 815 mic. It still works 50 years later. I often sneaked it into my gear. "You won't need that! The 415/6 will be fine!" But the number of times I used it anyway and people said, "I love that sound!" The only problem was you needed to point it really accurately!
Happy New Year Potato. totally agree, the client experience is HUGE. giving them the experience of being part of the whole production process and not just in it really wins a ton of points. its funny, some clients want to have the behind the scenes footage of them at a production set then the production itself. popular for their gram posts :) also, yeah the tripod is killer but a "good" one is hard to travel on planes with. so hard to compromise on gear for long distance shoots by taking cheaper tripods. anyway. love the new studio and keep that content coming in 2019!
I would definitely second on having something to allow the client view some of the work, even though I'm more of a hybrid shooter. Photographing tethered in a controlled environment, and having it for the client to view the photos on the fly ups the professionalism because they can literally see what they are paying for. Also, will you ever go over what types of production filming that you do?
Best filmmaker tool that you have to keep investing in is yourself. For what I do, i like a kinda heavy but small monopod (which is extendable). Small enough to carry around. Easy, cheap and stabilisation for your hand hold shoots (2 rotational axes and vertical movement) and carrying your camera. And extended to the ground it is a normal monopod. Oh and if the monopod also has a side stick handle (don't know the name of it, but it is also on tripods for video), the length of that stabilizes the 3rd rotational ax.
Always have the opinion that analogue/analog gear are the ones worth investing on. They have a much longer usable lifespan and runway compared to their digital cousins.
Every time I log in to watch your channel and read your name I think of a potato flying through the air, but on another note I want one of those tripods and I want some more camera gear, this life is addictive
This is one of the best insightful videos out there, you do a great job of this side of the market. I want to get in to shooting for music videos and your videos have been a instant help. There are so many people in music reviews that are just trying to brown nose to get favour from companies rather than just be honest. It's taken me about 5 years to narrow down my research to know what to get when I can. For now I have a endless supply of projects to finish as soon as I can afford to invest
I need an updated video of this. With more essentials. I’m a gluten for ordering every cheap light, mic, or any gadget, yet I barely go out and film. My channel is live streams but I want to create more. I obsess over gear but never go create. Wasted so much money on gadgets I never use. I wish we could have a simple must have list of things to start creating good content on a budget. Like news, interviews and short documentary stuff. Not cinematic or film making level but still professional looking and for UA-cam.
Thanks for this ONE! You are so funny. Just a remark regarding Sachtler stands. I have many (probably 6 I guess) from the small one to the heavy CINE35. These guys are filled with oil for the pressure. When you do not use them, put everything to zero, or you may break the joins and found yourself with oil in your hands... and everywhere around 😩
It would be really cool if you could do more business related videos of you just doing a basic run down on getting started, laying a foundation, contracts/legal, estimates and treatment. that kind of stuff
I think my MacBook pro and final cut pro is my most useful tool. I once edited a skateboard grand opening with just my cellphone footage. It looked professional.
I'd say one thing I couldn't live without is LED lighting and C stands. I've got a full array of Neewer panels. They're bright, lightweight, take common Sony batteries or run right off of mains voltage. They'll adjust from hot to cool white and their CRI is super high. Kinda funny you didn't think of lighting in spite of literally winding up in the dark in the first 1/3rd of the video.
You're my new favorite vlogger!!! Have you heard of G.A.S.? Gear Acquisition Syndrome. I spend hours on BH and Amazon, and of course, UA-cam looking at reviews.
Potato Jet is one of the greatest people in the videography industry on youtube. I have learned a lot from watching this channel. he has inspired me to open my channel. I just received my first cam ever. made my first video on youtube. hope I get support from you guys. i will be uploading fitness, food, travel, and cars using the knowledge I'm learning of Potato Jet
The problem with camera gear is once you buy something, it leads to you wanting about fifty other things...
Also UA-cam!
This is true with Cars, Computers, Real Estates, Gulfing, ... everything.
It’s literally anything...currently addicted to buying camera gear and tools lol
Thats a fact. I bought a steadicam a while ago... now im getting a gimbal for no reason lmaooo.

Yes it is just a large roll of orange paper
They are paper backdrops, You can search for seamless paper backdrop on amazon :)
I think another essential tool for investment is lighting! Especially small LEDs that you can bring anywhere.

Lolll at the ending. Love your videos. You are very very comfortable Infront of the camera. We appreciate the effort in all your videos keep it up
It would be really cool if you could do more business related videos of you just doing a basic run down on getting started, laying a foundation, contracts/legal, estimates and treatment. that kind of stuff
I swear, I love this guy. This is officially now my favourite UA-cam/filmmaking video content channel of all time.
.
Ps. GH5s or A7s 2??
Super helpful video! Hadn’t even thought about buying a Teradek until now. Also 10/10 ending
