This is the perfect car to practise welding on, they're super simple, extremely reliable, and not rare enough to worry about "learning" on. You have fallen on an absolute bargain here and I am sure I can speak for the rest of your viewers that we would certainly not be sad to see this car back for a series on patching the holes, putting in some interior, and tuning the electrics. You'd be amazed how easy it would be to turn this into a road worthy "rat rod", and super cheap given the aftermarket parts availability and commonality. Especially as it has an overdrive box and what sounds like a basically mint engine!
Loved every minute of this, as you say, there are few better ways to spend your time!
I have seen far worse spits go for far more - was quite impressed that it still had the original floor just about, and the sidewalls for the engine - everyone loses those - love the space saver tyre on the front - i wonder if they drilled it?
Im commenting here for it to get more likes and hopefully pinned! This is a beautiful car and i think he would learn alot more about fixing cars by taking this beautiful project on. If youre reading this please for the love of god continue this project

Mate that overdrive gearbox is worth 650 the diff is worth 250 the engine is worth 400 ! Well worth 175 nice one
Just thinking the same, I'm doing a spitfire up and was thinking of upgrading to overdrive as mine doesn't have it . Gearbox,and mount and prop shaft are anything from 5 to 700 from what I've seen
Was just gonna call out the O/D gearbox as well.

In 1972 my sister had one in British racing green. She picked me up from school a few times in it. Great feeling of speed as it's so low. Loved it so much.❤❤❤❤
I want to thank you! My Wife stumbled across my stash of cars in the barn which was also compounded by me asking if she fancied a day out next week, just the two of us for a nice lunch somewhere, Leicester.... to pick up another car. The divorce papers have remained in the bed side table thanks to me showing her NEV vlogs and pointing out it could be worse, "at least I'm not like this chap?"

I was so relieved when you finally put some oil in the dampers on the carbs! I could see the pistons in the venturi chambers bouncing around all over the shop when you were trying to start it. Very enjoyable video. Recently discovered your channel and loving it.

When you finally got that car running and youi did the dance, it reminded me of the time my late cousin and I got his MK2 Golf GTi running after changing the head gasget, timing belt etc, such a great feeling.
I really love that you're giving this car a brand new water pump and all of this maintenance, even though this car will probably never see the road again. That's got to give this little car some hope for the future 😊

@@alphatrion100 Its funny how I'm here watching this after I tried to buy five times more rusted Spitfire for 1500€. This has floor pans in it, can you imagine? And this one seems to have it's body still aligned properly, unlike the one I tried to buy.
All in all this one is one of the better ones. Only the sills and bonnet skirts are rusted away and in classic car world that's nothing.
I'm genuinely amazed that the master cylinders in the firewall are still there and not rusted off like so many other Spitfires

@@phaeton_buggy1575overdrives in these are notorious for failure, only worth more money if it actually works well and you only have a 10% chance of it being good as the electrics really don’t like sitting idle, if it doesn’t work and the gearbox oil isn’t low then it’s got electrical gremlins that 9 outa 10 suffer from and obv gearboxes with overdrive problems are literally “2 a penny” to buy 😂
Amazing how much I enjoy these videos, considering they're just watching a chap painstakingly getting an old engine to work. It's a combination of Nino being such a likeable chap, the cars themselves being quite interesting - and so apparently done for at the outset - and the generally slow and friendly pace of the action. Plus watching somebody else working is always a pleasure!

Ah ! My first car ( 67 mark 3 ) Flipped on side on first day of ownership ( black ice ) , ran for years on Herald scrap parts .

I’m 51. And been doing this (as a not professionally trained mechanic also) all my life. Vintage motorbikes, cars and random tat.( I’m really, really, so excitedly really, looking forward to doing the brakes discs and callipers on my LWB ‘vanzilla’ Renault Master tomorrow.. what could go wrong?.)

You say a good parts car, but if the chassis members and the various mounting points are solid, someone with time and who can weld can get that back on the road. I admire your pig-headedness. Always great videos.
What you have there is your perfect learning vehicle. The skills and experience you will gain if you were to take it on will far outway the cost in financial terms. So the progressing state of rustiness of the cars on the channel lately, makes me think that our lad Nino is going to be getting into welding before too long.....

This is the ideal candidate for welding practice,All the panels are still readily available for them even down to the outriggers that were a notorious rust trap (underneath & join to the chassis), Just another thing the oil in the carbs should be thin such as 3 in 1, the thick oil will cause too much resistance, also as i recall the starter motors on those always sounded like that!.
That brings back memories.
Around 1980 i was hanging around doing typical 10yo boy stuff and a red spitfire pulled up next to me.
It was a guy in his 40's with wavy blond hair and sunglasses asking for directions to a local pub.
Next to him was a 20 something blond woman who looked like a page 3 girl. (Uk newspapers used to have a topless model on page 3)
I told him how to get to the pub, but he didnt believe me and pulled up again a few yards away to ask an adult.
That guy would be in his mid to late 80's now if he is still alive. I bet he has some great memories.

@@DanaTheInsane you cannot find one in the UK that has a floor , trunk floor, rockers, or fenders there rotten they were the same new lol
It's pretty normal for all classics to be rotten here from the decades of the magical UK weather system..... But like the crazy ass backwards people we are we love them and we save them.

Over here in the USA we call the rust "patina" and I love the look of it. We could run the car over here no problem but I'm assuming the laws are more strict there?
much more strict, structural damage from the rust would require tons of welding (floor, sills, pillars, crumple zones), and even on cosmetic parts there's not allowed to be holes with sharp edges.

Trying to get my buddy and I out of poverty but this is his dream car. Hope we can make it and both get our dream cars. I am currently working on and driving a 1992 Toyota pickup 22re 5 speed manual and drove it about 2,800 miles across America with no problem other than the damaged lower control arms I couldn't fix at the time and it is now fixed. I love this truck. It has treated me well and been extremely reliable for me.
Wish you would buy normal cars people have so they can learn from your vids all this old stuff just not great

@@GHOst88666 its not only about driving with these cars, but theres a whole culture to restoration and using them and a lot of people, that own modern cars, use these older vehicles to learn and celebrate.
Great fun. New tool recommendation if you haven’t already got - Gunsons colour tune. Can actually see the combustion happening in the cylinder and can also then adjust mixture spot on. Would make a fun bit of telly too seeing that in use. Great for any/all your old carb projects.

You trying to set up that timing brought me back a few years when me and my grandpa tried to sort out timing on this old commie bike from the 50s, love your videos, love what you do, heck wish i had a friend like you! I learned the auto body trade by working on and restoring these cars for a British car club north of Toronto in the 80's. Jaguars too. They had it bad for rust.
It was a great experience. I've just retired from the trade this summer. Probably keep it at in some form.
nice to see an engine you can still work on without a computer. I loved working on cars back in the 60's . In Canada the few small cars came from England and I had quite a few Riley, Austin Healy , Sprite , Morris Minor etc. they were cheap and good for us young drivers. I had a 1949 Anglia at !0 hp.

That brought back some memories. I had 3 Mk4s, a Mk3 and a Mk2 and they all required constant attention. I guess someone's patience wore thin and this old girl was abandoned until you came along. The profit will be in the remaining parts but the last hour or so was hugely entertaining.Thanks for another great adventure.

I would love to see the Spit running and cleaned up. I loved seeing and hearing the Spitfire on roads when I was a lad.
Reminded me of my 1978 Spitfire, I had to put the spark plugs in the oven before it would start and then it was so coked up it wouldn't stop.

A perfect car to learn welding on! As your cars come to you with more rust, Ben (Tasty Classics) has to start off with cars that are more solid!
I have owned two very similar * Triumph" machines. Always with quirks and a wood dash component, these were for young people or such as young in heart. They were the most fun on narrow and winding semi-mountain roads as the low center of gravity was splendid to press for fast transit as cornering. "raidal tires helped . And where parking as so slim and compact as to advantage , for instance as cobblestone.
Sad to see the body condition in such rusted and destroyed state.
As size and configure, the "MG" types were fun to meet on the road.
I always waved at the mg owners, you see.
The engines and drivetrain I found very reliable. Very thrifty on fuel. I suspect this machine simply meets your channels name. I very much have enjoyed your posts. M.
You have a great opportunity to learn how to weld this car is the perfect project for you. You can also learn spray painting. If it all goes wrong what have you got to lose. Also as far a penetrating fluid goes try Plus Gas. Good luck

Let me just say that I think it's fantastic that even though you have a garage and all that jazz, you still make videos (at least this one) in your driveway, which is part of the charm of this channel.. Don't get me wrong, the garage videos are great and all, but something about wrenching on a car at home that's just.. cozy?

gearbox, diff n engine are all worth a few quid... you can still get repair panels and new old stock panels if your thinking of a basic restro job.

When you lifted the spitfire bonnet and tried to turn the engine I was wincing. I don't think you would do much damage turning it backwards but there are engines like for instance a Jag V12 that this is a no no! Better to oil the bores before attempting to turn it. I wrote this after just a few minutes watching but now glad to see you got it running as well as you have. Well done.
Great Video again Nino! I thought at the beginning of this video you bought this car to practice welding and body work on. It's a good candidate to do so tbf. Then after this car you would have the tools and the skills to be semi-confident in fixing up the Merc some. That said, I'm sure other comments have mentioned, there are parts on this car that spitfire builder would snap your hand off for. Like the floor bits that are in good shape and the inside arches.
Nino, top find. There's people out there re-building these from the ground up all over the show; they're such a fun car. Great community.

Reminds me of my triumph Dolomite I used to work on it myself routine servicing remember changing gasket on exhaust manifold just seeing the carbs again took me down memory lane

You should do a weekend college course on welding its not expensive and I learnt a lot in a day.
It's good to know how to do it and you can go a bit further on the jobs now you have the workshop. Or see if a local subscriber can teach you

It's funny, I was at a car show at the weekend (showing off my CRX) and commented I haven't seen a Spitfire in years.... I remember a friend of mine had one as his first car, you could get them for peanuts in the mid-90s.
