It’s time for celebrations here in China, with Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinese National Day, and Golden Week all in one week. Join us on our first autumnal vlog of 2023 as we try different traditional moon cakes, meet with Chinese relatives, and relax with fellow creators @melissa_renee and @SoSab. If you’re a vegan or have a plant based diet, definitely check out Maya in Shanghai: They have a decent sized vegan and vegetarian menu and the food was delicious.
The Mid-Autumn festival started more than 2,000 years ago as a post-autumn harvest celebration, which was devoted to thanking the gods. Most scholars believe that the Mid-autumn Festival first appeared during the Song dynasty, derived from the tradition of worshipping the moon. It is tradition to gift people moon cakes with different fillings such as meats, jasmine, coconut, and other exotic and aromatic flavours.
The fall season in Shanghai is beautiful, the trees are quickly showing their warm hues of oranges and yellows, and the leaves are starting to collect on the wet streets of this Asian mega city. The rainfall just adds to the café hopping ambience.

中秋节起源于2000多年前，是秋后丰收的庆祝活动，旨在感谢神灵。 大多数学者认为，中秋节最早出现在宋代，源于祭月。 传统上，人们会赠送带有不同馅料的月饼，如肉类、茉莉花、椰子和其他异国芳香口味的月饼。
上海的秋天很美，树木很快就显露出橙黄色的暖色调。树叶也翩翩落下，遍布整个上海的大街小巷， 频繁的降雨给咖啡馆增添别样的风情。一定要来看看上海的秋天，品一品上海小资惬意又夹杂暖黄色浪漫气息的氛围。

The straws that look like bamboo reeds are so cool! Hearing the crack of the homemade chocolate as you bite into it has me feeling so hungry right now lol
Bamboo straws are so much more durable than paper! The chocolate tasted so much better after being refrigerated (in my opinion), before then they were so soft and messy hahah!
So many different moon cakes! Almost spoilt for choice, but it's all good, because in most places, you can only get them once a year. And this is just the start of a series of back to back festivals and celebrations in China. Immediately following the Mid Autumn Festival, is the Golden Week, then 11.11 Single Day sales, Christmas, New Year, Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) and Saint Valentine's Day.

The mooncake is labeled "Premium Five Kernels" on top. Five kernels: A filling consisting of 5 types of nuts and seeds, coarsely chopped, is held together with maltose syrup. Premium indicates its superior quality.

@@ExpatNatt im surprised you haven't been to asian markets in the uk while being British 😂. Its on average £45 per box, and you get 4 sad mooncakes in the tin...thats more than 10 per cake, no thank you 😂😂😂

@@chriscain7333 oh my goodness that’s ridiculous! My tiny hometown only has one Asian supermarket and it’s more South East Asian than Chinese so had never seen moon cakes from there before. I’m sure the bigger ones are better stocked but I certainly wouldn’t pay that much for them 😅 They might be good but they aren’t THAT good in my opinion 😂
@@chriscain7333 thank you! Actually I have a few different ones. They weren’t too expensive, I didn’t buy the cheapest but still less than £20 for all the components. I’d love to wear some more expensive ones one day and feel like a princess 😂
