Totally agree. I just had my first guitar (a 74 Strat) worked on by my local guitar specialist. They went over it inch by inch and brought it up to speed and made it even better than new. Can't say enough about keeping an old guitar and taking good care of it. It will pay you back with interest.

A year and a half ago, when my grandson was 7 years old, he asked his parents for a guitar for Christmas. They came to me for advice as I’ve been playing guitar since the early 60s. All he told them was “I want a guitar like Pop-Pop’s”. He was referring to my Black and White Rickenbacker 350. So we bought him a black, with white pickguard, Fender Squire Strat, but with a short scale maple neck. I felt that would make chord formations a bit easier for him to reach (and short scale was good enough for John Lennon 👍). He started lessons, with my tutoring as well, and now has about 12 different chords he can play (and switch) pretty well. He also started reading tab. He’s playing some songs now, which really increased his desire to learn. But his biggest discovery (which I confess I showed him), is the “pick-drag”, which he insists on ending every song with!!!🤘 He’s growing up fast, so I think going to a full scale guitar will be happening soon. Then, one day, I’ll give him my Ric.

Honestly, what Dan said about the staff wanting you to buy “the right guitar” is so true! I’m fortunate enough to work on the shop floor at Andertons and we genuinely care about the guitar each person buys. If you love the guitar, how it looks, how it feels, you will absolutely keep picking it up. Great video Dan!

    • @WarrenPostma
      @WarrenPostma 2 роки тому +4

Also it should be said that a great many guitar shop staff are themselves devotees to their instruments, and they understand how critical it is to develop a kind of closeness and a feeling towards an instrument. To have success as a player means to keep picking that instrument up. It’s essential that we love what we do, or we won’t do.

My dad's philosophy was similar and I wish more parents thought this way about it. When I was teaching and working in music stores, it PAINED me to see parents just buying their kid the cheapest thing there. A guitar that was never going to play well and had nothing to do with the music they wanted to play... and telling the child it was because they wouldn't stick with it. You just doomed them to almost certain failure, way to go Sparky!
I hope a lot of parents see this and take it to heart!

I couldn't agree more. How anyone can be expected to enjoy learning guitar can't do that with an instrument that is basically un-playable. Parents...I know it can be hard to pay more for a better guitar for your child, but it will save you $$ in the long run!

So lucky that my dad agreed to take me to Anderton’s to get my first electric guitar when I was about 12. This brings back good memories, I’m 17 now and still love it.
PS please just let him do what he likes. It doesn’t matter how well you play if it’s become a chore and you hate doing it, so his enjoyment is the main guiding factor. I told myself that I wouldn’t make it a chore after not enjoying learning to play the trumpet for a couple of years, and I’ve stuck to that ever since. It isn’t about being amazing, it’s about having a great time just playing

Excellent recommendations! I have helped quite a few people choose their first guitar, including both of my kids. I ALWAYS tell people, #1 (set a budget) for the guitar. #2 (Let them pick out and play EVERY guitar in their price range). #3 (Do NOT try to convince them what they should buy). #4 (Let the person choose the guitar THEY like best). They have to like the (color, style, and feel) or they will NEVER bond/ PLAY with the guitar. And regardless of their age, #5 (make CERTAIN they like the way it feels in THEIR hands). #6 (LEAVE them alone with their guitar UNTIL they want your help)…

I wish there was a link to the original show with the flashback of young Mick and Dan. This was brilliant because it reminds what it felt like. I remember my first guitar (3/4 Kingston classical), my first electric (Decca Teisco Strat-like single pickup), and finally at 14-yo, my first real guitar, a '78 Ibanez PF300NT (Les Paul copy) that I had saved up my paper route money for and was nothing like my Dad's Mosrite. Each step was thrilling!

Does it matter whether kids….or anyone should start with electric? I first got an electric guitar but it didn’t go anywhere till I got an acoustic. Really crappy amp, then my 6’9 roommate was rough housing on wisely and broke it. Hence, I’m an acoustic player. I love it all, 35 some years later. Good call on letting him explore it first. You have to love it, explore a bit first before you go down the lesson path. It is the greatest joy I have carried through my life. Amps….how these old circuits work has been another growing revelation.

Very similar experience with my son. He started by stealing my ‘The SG’ (the one I’m holding in my (very old) profile picture) then declared he wanted to buy himself a Firebird. While we didn’t get Danish Pete, we got great service when trotted down to Andertons and played a few guitars, and he walked away with a 2017 Reverse body Firebird in natural (‘Pelham Blue is too gaudy’) complete with the banjo-like tuners they were fitting at the time (‘wouldn’t be a Firebird with normal tuners’). I have a lovely pic of him stood with the box outside the store.
He still puts the ‘only a Gibson is good enough’ neck case candy behind the strings when he puts it back in its case.

Great vid Dan, you got the most important points across. When I was a young man I saw a lovely Tele copy in a music shop in Belfast, it chimed like a bell. When my parents asked me about my day in town I blethered about this guitar. About a week later my mum asked me to get something from their room and when I went upstairs the guitar was laid out on the bed. That was about 35 years ago. I still have it. Man, watching this was like having a flashback. My stepson really loves the guitar. He just wanted to pick it up one day. Since I play, he’s seen all of my guitars, pedals, amps, etc.. I took him over to guitar center so we could look for a suitable instrument for him. He must have tried every single guitar I would pull off the wall for him. Eventually, his eyes came across a cherry red-sparkle, squire tele. He just thought it was the coolest thing he had ever seen. Fast forward to today, he has his guitar and plays it all the time. Just exploring all of the notes he can create fret by fret. I love watching it. Thanks for telling your story here. It was truly heartwarming.

I modified my guitar to the point that the only original bits on it are just the neck and the body. Completely new electronics, gone from an HSS to an SSS setup, changed the bridge, changed the tuners, brand new pickups. So I know just how important it is to connect with your guitar. That is more important than how good people think it looks, or how expensive or how cheap it is. If you connect with it, that is your guitar. It's a little bit like wands and Harry Potter.

Once I could play a few Judas Priest songs, I was off drums and wanting to play guitar.
Dad let me pick one from his collection to practice at-home on (1980 Gibson RD-Artist) & gave me a Rockman so I could do it quietly. I played my first-show on guitar a year-later & used his ‘61 Les Paul for the occasion.

I was skint and couldn't afford much and I thought it would be a flash in the pan but it was soon obvious that he was serious so I begged, borrowed and stole and we visited Andertons and got him kitted out with something he was excited about playing and it was worth every penny because he stuck with it and became a superb musician. He is all grown up now and lives abroad but has always played. When he visits we always end up jamming which is a challenge for me because he loves Steely Dan. But get it right and your offspring might enjoy a lifetime of music. The downside being GAS but that is another subject. Nice going Dan.

Can’t argue with this. We went to by my son a guitar for this 15th. We parents were looking at East Coast, which being an Andertons brand, you might have expected them to settle on. But they saw he wasn’t really inspired by any of them and brought him a bullet mustang to try. Almost within our budget. Telling us he has to look at it and want to play it. Service so good I bought myself a guitar last year, and we just got the boy his second. A Squier FSR Jaguar like in the film, but shell pink and Mint.

I think you're on the right track with letting him experiment and have fun before learning theory and technique. There's some discipline for sure, but it's the fun that keeps people playing for years.

What a great vlog, Dan! Loved it! When my daughter was 12 and said she wanted her first guitar, I wanted to get her a Strat because that's what I play, and I love that guitar for so many reasons. But like you, I let her find her own way. Her journey has taken her through a Fender Duo Sonic, a Gibson SG, a Les Paul... and then one day out of the blue, she said, "I want to play a Strat." She's 16 now, and her Strat is the only guitar she plays these days, and she's brilliant. My pitch to other parents in similar situations is, obviously don't buy what you can't afford, but ditch the worry about "spoiling" them. Upgrades to better instruments and amps are investments in their future if it inspires them to continue to play, improve, and find their own sound. Thankfully, my GAS for pedals hasn't rubbed off on her yet!

Still have my $200 Clonecaster that I bought when I was 13 at a little mom-and-pop music store in the middle of nowhere. I wasn't totally in love with it as a kid, and I knew nothing about setups or anything like that. Now that I'm into my 30's it's one of my favorite guitars I've ever played. Restored a 3/4 scale consignment store find for my daughter last year, and she loves jamming with me, even if she is just hammering on open strings. Love seeing kids take up instruments and I recommend it to everyone that's looking for a creative or interesting hobby

Went through this journey with my then 10 year old grandson. Had a few lessons with him but then he lost interest. He was afraid I would be mad at him but I reassured him that I was not. I told him guitar is meant to be a joyful endeavor and if it's not then there is no point. I told him to put the guitar away but never sell it. One day that seed may find good soil.

My daughter just turned 17. She has had her own pink first act guitar since she was 10 just sitting collecting dust. It was stored in the closet some years ago. One day she asked if she could use one of my guitars. I dug out my Squier Cabbronita and a peavey solid state practice amp. It sat for awhile then one day I heard White Stripes coming from her room. I just leave her be and let her know I am available if she needs help. BUT I have to admit it is VERY HARD to not go in and say let me show you this and that. I have to let it be her thing. If I get pushy it will turn her off of it. Her friend came over and they were passing the guitar back and forth so i brought in another guitar (Danelectro short horn) and a Supro Blues king. Set it up and left. Again trying really hard to not be pushy.
As Ol Blue Eyes said She's got to do it her way. LOL

When I was 15 I got my first "real" guitar. A shitty Tele knockoff from a pawnshop. I think it took me about 3-4 months before I really "learned" anything that could be described as musical. Before that it was just exploring and trying to wrap my mind around what this piece of wood with steel actually was. Making shapes, some good, some bad. Strumming, picking, creating melodies having no clue what I was doing (still do that TBH). That type of intro is why I still play twenty years later I think. If it was a rigid like, alright, you got the guitar here's some lessons or scales it might have felt more like work or homework. It helped of course I was obsessed since I could remember. I think it's brilliant you just left him alone with it. A teenage boy/girl, sprinkle in some naivete, a guitar and you have the making of pure magic. There's something about that feeling and intrigue of a journey not yet begun. Sharing this experience made me want kids! Something my wife and I flip flop on.

This makes a lot of sense. Of all the guitars I have non of my kids want to play them because they are “dad’s” guitars. Maybe they need to pick out their own guitar that’s theirs.

I totally agree about letting them just have fun and explore in the beginning. With both my boys, I told them to pick up the guitar and make sounds and don’t worry about what you’re supposed to do. You can’t stress them out from the get go lol

So awesome. I have a vivid memory of my dad and I walking down to the fledgling Heritage Guitar Company in the late 80s to buy my first "real" guitar with chunk of money I'd saved for a couple years. I had no conception of the history of the company, just that it was a local company. Unbeknownst to me, the guy who helped us was an original owner/builder and made us a deal on an H140 that I could afford. I remember t being a bit less than $600, a big difference from these days. I still own a couple magnificent Heritages and live about a mile from the factory in Kalamazoo.

Delighted to see he's gone with the Jaguar! The pickups have such a cool, distinct sound. The Jaguar/Jazzmaster body shape is my favorite guitar shape of all time. Extremely comfortable to play from a seated position - as a beginner, this is probably how he'll be playing most of the time. Most of all, that guitar just looks badass. All of that chrome just looks cool - it makes me wish Jazzmasters came with the same control plates as a Jag.

I have two sons that are 18 months apart in age. They both started showing interest in guitar around 14 years of age (one was interested in Bass guitar). Once they really wanted to learn I would show them things, but it’s not the same having a scheduled lesson with Dad, so I set them up for lessons with a friend of mine that they didn’t know, but we did it a very different way. My friend was a jack of all trades type, singer, drummer, guitar and bass player that had similar musical tastes. He would go to the house and play the drums and teach my boys a real simple classic rock song. I still taught them things and jammed with them, but they had a lot of fun and learned very quickly this way.
There is something about knowing that you have a lesson on Saturday and your teacher gave you things to work on and not wanting to let your teacher down that is a good motivator.

Fantastic video… my 6yo is at the stage where he just loves picking up my Tele and fiddling with all the knobs on those funny boxes on the floor just to see what sort of crazy noise he can make… the louder the better!!! Incidentally, he goes to his first piano lesson next week, so excited about that!

Congrats (to both father and son) on this purchase. As much fun as this was though, wait till you get to give him one of your guitars that means something to you. I've given an acoustic to one of my daughters, and a Tele to one of my sons, and in each case, they were moved by the gift and have treasured the instruments. I love that my affection and passion for the instruments, as well as my love for the kids, makes the guitars worth just that little bit more in their eyes.

That's so freaking cool. Speaking from experience both shopping for myself and others, i've found the biggest thing is to just find the guitar and aspects thereof that interest you the most in your time shopping, whether it be based on looks, tone, playability, etc but NEVER because it's the cheapest thing they sell. I had a family friend ask me to teach their kid guitar, but they only wanted to play his 60s Airline because it looked cool, so when he bought them a plastic acoustic from walmart, they never played the damned thing. If you give a beginner a guitar they connect with, and teach them what they're interested in learning, it's much easier to get them to keep with it. If you get them interested with one thing and make them learn something else on something else, they'll likely struggle, especially now that there are more distractions from things like Guitar than ever

Great advice. I am a strat and tele guy and got both my kids started to show interest so I was looking at Strats and Tele naturally as thats what I like. Took my daughter to pick her one and she chose a Les Paul, and my boy picked a Flying V. Both kids are up for rehoming if anyone is interested lol

Thanks so much for sharing this. I've been through this twice with my girls (Gretsch semi-hollow white with gold hardware for one and an Epiphone Les Paul Jr in TV Yellow for the other one), and it was a delight both times. That purple jag is awesome.

The jag is a great choice for a kid. Easy player with the shorter scale, and they're still so underrated. The sounds you can get with a jaguar are totally unique. It'll help him find his own sound real quick.

Hello Dan, once more you are a source of inspiration. My son started when he was 7. Hé is 8 now.
His first guitar is an Ibanez Mîkro, he chose the color and he loves to play. At this âge you have to make them remembrer that they have to work à little bit everything day. It is not l’île teenagers.
But, on day, we will go to Anderton’s together, even though we live in Monaco, and he will choose his guitar. Hopefully, it will be like mine, that i still have and that i always come back to.
Dan Thank you so much for that video, once more we all learn from you guys (thanks Mick too)

Very smart about "negotiating" the cost of setup. Many places already do that, but those that don't should sweeten the deal for sure! Congrats, Zac, on a real beauty!! LOVE the color!! 🔥
