Welcome! Dan here. This started as a vlog idea. Sat here in UA-cam Gearvideoland, we are constantly bombarded with questions about the equipment our favourite players used to get certain tones. And we find ourselves constantly replying that focussing only on the gear is never going to get you there.
The next old chestnut to come out is that 'tone is all in the hands'. We LOVE this one - hold those hands up next to your ears. Can you hear that tone? No, of course you can't because the gear clearly plays a part too. It all matters.
The thing that links a player's hands with the gear is their approach and technique. And more than anything else, what marks a specific player out is their phrasing. That's why it's often said that you can plug David Gilmour into anything… and he'll sound like David Gilmour. In fact it was probably him who said it in the first place!
We think it's worth some time. Looking closely at a player's phrasing will get you closer to their sound than any boutique pedal. Not only that, but it's absolutely free to take and there's no three-year wait list!

i am going to be a fly 🪰 in the ointment. i’ve heard the “tone” of dg’s on several songs and have found them not particularly alluring, if not harsh. why gilmour is so mesmerizing is his note choice, phrasing, and the air between those notes that allow them to breathe..

The Gilmour feel is unmistakable. Also another good tip for learning feel is to practice some sax players licks on your guitar.

This is great advice. Learning parts written on different instruments has really helped me break out of that "playing where your fingers take you" routine that's easy to fall into for intermediate guitarists
I couldn't agree more with this. I learned the sax solos to Will You by Hazel O'Connor and Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel and it taught me an amazing amount. Trying to work out how to get the same feel using bends and slides., and working out where to play it on the neck. You end up learning the same licks in 3 different places.
You also play licks that guitarists don't play, as they don't naturally fall under the fingers. Many of those licks have now worked their way into my subconscious and pop up in other solos, and those licks are often the licks that other players ask about, because they haven't heard them before, at least not on a guitar.

Exactly! Think about it, going all the way back to Charlie Christian, guitar players have often emulated either singers or horn players. Automatically makes your phrasing more "natural" because it's tied to breathing. Jeff Beck has said he's trying to "sing" with the guitar. Dave Gilmour actually took up the sax. And if you go back and listen to Eddie Van Halen, he did a LOT of horn-like stuff that swung like crazy!
David is absolutely one of THE GOATs. Never, ever, ever tire of hearing his mastership.

That's just the best. Yes, indeed. Can you believe how perfectly he nailed the little details about it! I'm just blown away. I thought I knew how to play that solo until Dan sent me back to the drawing board. LOL. We are all so lucky. One of the best non-pedal episodes you’ve ever done. I’ve been waiting for years to see you guys do something on Gilmour. His playing is as unique and hard to nail down properly as I’ve ever heard. This did not disappoint. Keep it up!
Guys, this is one of the most brilliant, insightful and useful episodes yet! What really struck me was having Dougie play the solo on drums as a lesson in phrasing. I've got my pentatonic licks going my my phrasing really can use some help, so this will give me plenty to work on. P.S. Dan's collab at the end may break the internet!

Finally someone gets it. I spent years chasing Gilmour's tone with gear. I even put a mini switch on my Strat. It didn't work - I got _further_ away from what I was seeking. And then I worked out I should be paying more attention to *how* he played. A year later I was doing a passable (for me) impression. _On any guitar, with any amp._
This video clearly took a substantial amount of effort to produce. I enjoyed the balance of playing technique and gear talk. It was both practical/educational and entertaining. Way to keep things, fresh guys.
Really great video chaps. 100% agree about phrasing. Paul Kossoff was my hero - his phrasing seemed so different from other players. Less is more

The moment in dogs when the drum hits. Pause. Harmony guitar lead. This is my happy place.
Dogs is criminally under rated. One of my favorite PF songs. The 3rd solo makes me feel emotions that I never knew I had lol. And the ending "Who was born in a house...." just kicks so much ass, especially while playing it to a backing track. The outro solo to Pigs is also great. Animals is some of David's greatest guitar work. He truely is a king of tone.

Dogs is also a great example for amazing phrasing (hey, it rhymes!). That first solo, with its first notes are coming (probably) 1/8th early and floating across the one.... it's pure pleasure.

I have been watching your show for years now. I have probably seen every episode you guys have put out. This is one of my favorite episodes I’ve ever seen. The second y’all start talking about phrasing and you change the Notes and play the same freezing I feel like that’s going to be incredibly eye-opening for SSSSOOOOO many people. This makes me want to go back and do the same thing as an experiment myself. Well done fellas!
100% agree. I've heard my Dad play Shadows tunes on my Les Paul, from outside the room, and fully expected to see him with a Strat on the strap when I walked in with his brew. I was absolutely gobsmacked.

David Gilmour is the Frank Sinatra of guitar players.
When the Wall came out I learned every guitar part on the album ... no effect pedals whatsoever.
What I realized about DG’s playing/phrasing was that he writes symphonic & jazz parts. This solo reminds me of a saxophone. Parts of Comfortably Numb sound violin & cello and so on.
You’ve got it exactly right. He plays MUSIC instead of picking guitar. It’s a fundamental mental orientation. His playing was for me a doorway into this way of thinking, feeling time and communicating collaboratively with band mates and listeners

Yep, and he also sings his solos/parts (sometimes during the take, WYHW title track & Any Colour You Like).

Great explanation on phrasing. The pinnacle of Gilmour's phrasing was on the track "Marooned" with the digitech wammy IMO,

This is the video to show people who don't believe "tone is in the fingers" these guys are playing the wrong notes, in the wrong key, on the wrong guitar... And it sounds awesome.
That's not what tone is by definition. Tone is comes from the gear.
Playing style is something completely different than tone.
If you were paying any attention, he goes through the tone aspects in detail as well as the phrasing.

@@JC-fj7oo Then what do the tone knobs do? Do they make you play different?
Tone is a term to describe the audio characteristics of the gear, not how the player plays.
The reason they are adding effects using Pro Tools is to adjust the tone after the fact.
Playing style/ phrasing is not tone. Both are important, but people tend to concentrate on playing style first.
You can take advantage of the dynamics of gear by playing a certain way, but that is not what tone means, though you may perceive it that way. Of course you cannot buy skill by buying gear but you can only push mediocre gear so far.
A lot of compression was used in this recording yet the Tele still doesn't sound like an LP.
The video showed that despite the tonal differences, you could still get the phrasing right in an impressive way.
Love the different approaches of Dan and Mick! And the takeway is : "learn the vibe" ! Great video gents!
Oh and by the way, also loved the episode of Chris!

the phonetic lyrics at the end are classic. I remember listening to some Japanese buskers phonetically sing The Eagles' "Peaceful Easy Feeling" once with obviously not a clue as to what the words were or what they meant and it was incredibly awesome.

My Uncle was a Gilmour nut. He was in a Pink Floyd tribute band forever. He was telling me yesterday, in fact about a conversation he had with Pete Cornish. He was frustrated...couldn't nail the tone. Pete told him just get such and such amp and such and such delay pedal...and there it was. 2 things that were a bit expensive even then but he says it was almost perfect. I wish I remembered what gear he said but I'm new to guitar so it went in one ear out the other. I will ask him again if anyone is interested.

This was so many kinds of good and so helpful. You each were amazing, but damn, Dan. I am 3 days into this and just slain by how much you nailed the little things about this regarding pick attack and timing. I have known how to play this decently for 20 or more years and am such a David Gilmour fan. I have studied and cared about it and learned much, but am off to the wood shed on the things I thought I knew. You have raised the bar for me, sir. Well done and so tastefully executed.

This is fantastic. Absolute gold! Dans point on phrasing with different notes is so bang on
17:27 "So whatever the first compressor doesn't get, the second compressor does." And also before, how you said the Empress was being used 'flat out', and not subtly - could you go into a little more detail about what's going on? Could you use two compressors rather than a compressor and a limiter? Could the limiter go before the compressor? Thanks!
Re: singing your solos: the standards version of John Etheridge springs to mind. Not sure if Pass, Montgomery, Benson and the like sang along to solos on record, but Erroll Garner did, albeit on piano. My teacher tried to get me to do it, but I just got embarrassed about my singing voice, and couldn't do it at pace. Sadly my knowledge of jazz guitarists is not exhaustive.
Keith Jarrett was famous for singing while playing. What it does is make your fingers and mind think of phrases in smaller singable pieces. Do it now and stick with it; it will change your whole relationship to music, within your playing as well as regarding ALL music you hear

I had the honor of being his page turner at a concert at Lincoln Center - he was delving into classical - this was 1993 perhaps - and he hadn't memorized the piece so I got to sit next to him and turn the pages - he was singing much of what he played - a Mozart Concerto I think - I'll have to google.
You don't have to sing out loud if it makes you unsure, even humming along quietly through phrases you are unsure of may help. I'm kind of coming from the other direction, I sang for many years before taking up the guitar. I had to learn Wish You Were Here for guitar class a couple of years ago and being able to sing the vocal helped me learn the phrasing. It was interesting to hear all about the studio set up and what differences that could make to the sound too.

The whole Pink Floyd band swings or swung as it were. That's what I noticed as a kid when my mom bought me Dark Side of the Moon. It had a great impression on me and my approach to guitar, my sensitivity to timing and the oft misunderstood concept of "the pocket." Truly a soulful album.
Fantastic episode, Gilmour and That Pedal Show are my two biggest inspirations

Larry Carlton did a good video on phrasing along these lines. Imitation of rhythmic patterns and note selections were the basic concepts. I spent hours, days, and now years, doing this and it definitely pushed my playing into the expressive realm. Great video fellas, thanks.
