  • I interviewed Dr. Jason Fung, a world-renowned expert on intermittent fasting and weight loss.
    Timestamps:
0:00 How intermittent fasting can result in significant weight loss, even if you’re obese
2:49 Insulin causes weight gain; take it away, and you lose weight - but hardly anyone focuses on this fact
5:15 Lower insulin by avoiding refined carbohydrates, eating moderate protein and high natural fat, and intermittent fasting
8:35 Both high blood sugar and high insulin are destructive to your body
21:18 Dr. Jason Fung’s clinic helps patients with intermittent fasting, with many free resources available
25:55 Besides weight loss, intermittent fasting helps with type 2 diabetes, mental clarity, and increased energy
32:00 Intermittent fasting may help to treat Alzheimer’s by a process called autophagy
34:40 It may also be beneficial for cancer
37:05 For fasting, find a routine that works as part of your lifestyle
Dr. Fung explains that the cause of obesity is an issue of too much insulin. Intermittent fasting results in a significant drop in insulin levels. Take away insulin, and people lose weight. Conversely, give people insulin or insulin-raising drugs, and they gain weight. To a lesser extent, the same thing happens with cortisol.
However, most people still focus on calories in, calories out as the formula for weight loss. The problem is, this fails most of the time! Common sense also says that not all foods are equally fattening. Eating the same number of calories from kale as from cookies is very different. Every time you eat, insulin goes up. This is natural. But eating many times per day tells your body to store the food energy you’re eating as fat, because of the constantly raised insulin.
If you want to lose weight, do two things: stop eating high-insulin-provoking foods, and fast intermittently to give your body a break from constant insulin. High insulin and high blood sugar are very toxic to the body, so giving someone with type 2 diabetes insulin is counter-productive. You’re simply trading one toxicity for another.
Losing weight can help reverse type 2 diabetes. And type 2 diabetes is really a disease of too much sugar in the body. Taking insulin can lower blood glucose, but it simply forces the sugar out of the blood and into your body, causing your organs to rot away over the span of ten or fifteen years. This is why diabetes is a disease of everything!
Diabetes and obesity are both diseases of too much insulin. The solution is obvious: lower insulin. Type 2 diabetes is a reversible disease. Intermittent fasting also increases your energy, and it may be beneficial for treating Alzheimer’s.

I am a medical doctor and I have had lots of questions on some of our medical practices and teachings. I haven't seen so many Doctors display a keen sense of KNOWLEDGE, CARE, PASSION AND DESIRE TO IMPROVE THEIR PATIENT'S LIFE by questioning the norms and old teachings. You really take the bold steps to change the narratives with knowledge and evidence based practice to save lives. It's wonderful watching and learning from you - Dr Eric and Dr Fung!

Thank you Dr Fung and Dr Berg I almost died last year from health problems my liver, lungs and kidneys were shutting down . My doctors didn’t know what to do. I was in the hospital for almost a month. When I left the hospital I was on 19 different medicines including 2 for insulin. The super high dose of Prednisone I was on spiked my blood sugar super high. I was told by everyone that I was too young to be this sick. I cried out to God for help. On one of my hospital visits one of my doctors said the same thing. She said “You are too young to be going through this. These are diseases that old people have. God wants us to have an abundant life.” I was in shock. None of my doctors had ever said something like that to me. I fell asleep that night in the hospital watching a tv show. When I awoke the next morning which was a Sunday morning a preacher was on tv preaching a sermon on “Living life Abundantly” which referenced John 10:10. He said Jesus wanted us to have a life in it’s abounding fullness of joy and strength for mind, body and soul. I knew this was confirmation for my prayers. Randomly Dr Berg and Dr Fung videos started appearing on my UA-cam feed. I followed their advice and now I am off ALL prescription medications. The Keto Diet and IF literally saved my life. Dr Berg and Dr Fung were the answer to my prayers. Thank you for saving my life!

Dr. Berg is an excellent listener, I'm impressed. He has a track record of communicating well: clear, concrete and concise wellness facts. The receptive side of communication is like an entirely different language. He seems fluent in both. Here, he does not interrupt his guest, yet he isn't spacing out; he gives frequent small non-verbal cues that he is paying attention. I love being able to see both sides in a conversation, you have the opportunity to learn about both parties. Kudos to Dr. Berg.

Our Dr was amazed at the results of my husband who’s followed both of you since August 5, 2018 when he was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. He started intermittent fasting with Ketogenic diet. He’s lost 20 pounds & his blood glucose is at a normal, bp is normal and as of yesterday, fasting glucose was 81. Our dr told my husband he’s never seen such a turnaround! Our dr has been practicing for 30 years! Thank you both for giving us this information! No meds & my hubby is recovering!

Just a word of thanks to you two gentlemen. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in november 2017. My cholesterol and triglycerides were way high as well as my blood pressure. Was on metformin 1000mg/day and despite all the meds, my sugar levels were still not within reasonable levels. Weight was over 260 lbs ( my scale just could not go any higher ). Doctor was about to increase my medications when I started to watch what you guys were saying about ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting. So I just followed your advice, knowing full well what my doctor told me about my condition ( chronic and progressive, with only getting higher doses of meds ).
As of now, I have lost more than 70 lbs with the ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting and walking 40 minutes daily ( I was doing a 18 hour fast / 2 meal a day regimen ) and now, just to finish losing the last few pounds, I regrouped all my caloric intake to one meal a day ( so called 23 hour fast ). This morning, my blood sugar levels are at 4.6 mmol/l and my last A1C check ( 6 weeks ago is 5.5 mmol /l ). Triglycerides are 0.78 ( 1.46 is about the normal standard ) indicating that I am burning up fat.
I do not hunger and my energy levels are like never before. At age 57, all I can say, I never felt better in all my last 30 years. next week, I am going to see my doctor and he asked me to stop taking the metformin to see where my blood sugar levels stand. It has been more than 10 days and all of my readings are averaging between 4.6 and 5.6 .
Never will I go back to living with my carb diet that got me in such a mess. The food industry is telling you lies!
As for you Dr. Fung, you are a Canadian physician. You must break this out to all Canadians suffering from diabetes. I live in the province of Quebec and over here, about 10 percent of the population has diabetes and it is a burden to our health system.
By the way, refined carbohydrates are poison.
And for all of rest you..... it works, at first it's not easy, but with perseverance and some failures you can pull this off.
Keep up the good work and again Thank you !

Not only the met, but the blood pressure meds ( lost nearly 100 pounds . Now, I feel 20 years younger and life is great even during the pandemic. More ready that ever to face off this with a way better immune system, I must strain that once you are doing no carbs, your primary fuel source is fat.But never blend fats with a glycemic diet. This is for the rest of your life. However i do cheat ( on family occasions or weekends). A1c runs about 4.8 to 5.6 , so this where i am now and never ever will i go back to what made sick in first place.

@@rmoreno1826 I am no more suffering from diabetes. On weekends, i eat things that others do. My system is no longer resistant to insulin which means when i consume a high glycemic meal such as a chinese buffet with a generous dessert my blood sugars are normal ( 4.8 mmol/dl ) . The key is insulin resistance which dr Fung speaks abundantly. Once you have destroyed your resistance to insulin ( some people take more time than others ) everything falls back into place. I still do intermittent fasting combined with OMAD whit a low carb diet on weekdays and all is ok. Just like this way i live now. My fiend was diebetic and had stage 4 prostate cancer and he is cancer free now, after a 32 day long fast and many months after, his blood sugars went normal. Hids MD ask if he can share his data whith other colleagues. All I can say is it works and we still are in uncharted waters. But it works. This a matter of making choices and to keep em for life. Hope this may help you.

Justin Kerns I’m sure there are doctors out there trying to share information on true health with their patients-Trying to educate them and peel away years of indoctrination from the food industry giants in cooperation with government and media. It’s no easy task! Some patients would rather rely on medication. Others may not be able to face the discipline, or be desperate enough to hear. I wonder how strong a grip on medical school the big pharma and big food industries have...to deny doctors the kind of true education in nutrition that would put the anti-health industries out of business. We need Drs. Berg and Fung, and Drs. Becky Gillespie and her husband Keith...obviously people’s lives have been saved because of them.

The medical profession is like a Church. Going against the official dogma you were taught is very hard and may have consequences. More, and more medical professionals are learning and teaching the truth. If you show up 40-50 lbs lighter, with better labs for your appointment, most will pay attention. It was so bad to the point where I was about to get bariatric surgery. While waiting for insurance to approve my surgery, I followed these doctors and did Keto and intermittent fasting. Weeks later, my insurance approved me for bariatric surgery and they told me that I qualified because of my BMI during my initial consultation. But because of doing keto and IF, I called the hospital back to cancel my surgery and I disqualified myself from bariatric surgery because I lost so much weight and my BMI went down! I have a long way to go still, and I am unfortunately in a plateau, but I keep going! I am feeling so much better! I have zero pain for the first time in 30 years!

    21:07 "Fasting is hard..."
I just want to point out that fasting is a LOT easier if you are already fat adapted, IE, you've been on Keto for a while. When you are carb addicted, fasting is painful in the extreme, as your body really is starving, it's starving for carbs and cannot easily mobilize fat for fuel that it could otherwise replace the carbs with. When you are keto/fat adapted, your body is never actually starved for fuel, it has fat reserves, it 'knows' it has fat reserves, and it is easily able to mobilize that fat to weather the fast (which is for many of us, half the point). By all means, follow Dr. Fungs advice and learn to fast regularly, but I highly recommend being solidly into eating keto for at least a month or two first.
I am by the way a regular faster, in addition to being keto/OMAD (One Meal a Day). I do a one day fast at least once a week and I do a three day fast once a month. As I write this, I happen to actually be on day three of one of those monthly total fasts. I am not hungry.

I know how it feels, I can't go on full keto as I stay with my mum (she cooks what she likes, and eating hours forbid me to stick to 18:6).
However, sticking to 2 meals a day and as much as possible, eating food with more vege (e..g. salad/subway for me), has already improve my health by leaps - because I am very fat, so any little improvement is a big improvement.
