I have a job, which requires me to have a certain physical appearance at any given time. In June 2016 around Father's Day in the US, UA-cam put one of Dr. Fung's videos in my video lineup. I clicked on it. He was talking about his book, "The Obesity Code." From that one video, I learned how to precisely control how I look, safely, effectively, and for the rest of my working life, then into retirement. I bought "The Obesity Code," I gave copies to my coworkers, and we divided it up into chapter and verses, so we could learn it and quote it, like the Bible. When I learned about ketogenic diet, I recognized immediately that the two disciplines were complimentary. Now in 2022, I'm so in control of my weight, and I can't thank Dr. Fung enough.

I am 47 years old and have had type ONE diabetes since age 10. My life has been an absolute nightmare trying to manage this disease. I accidentally found Dr. Fung 2 months ago. I am on an insulin pump so I am able to set my pump to the very lowest settings to keep me alive. When I started fasting, my hemoglobin A1c was 8.1 and I was 169 lbs. On Thursday, my weight is. 160 and my A1c is 7.0. Thank you, Dr. Fung.

How long did you fasted, what did you eat and did you exercise. I ve diagnosed with pre-diabetes, i used to eat cake everyday like 10" cake in 2 days by myself. Hard to give it up, so planning to healthy eating for 4 days and friday and weekend i have a serve of cake. I do exercise, like min 200mins a week. Tell us everything you do for that result.

Lily Chau I can tell you what I did. Been doing keto for two years with time restricted feeding. I used to do 16 to 22 hours a day now I’m down to about 12 to 14. Lost all the weight I needed and I’m holding at my present wait for six months and eat whatever I want. Just no sugar very minimal carbs and definitely no starch. I’ve lost 35 pounds and I wasn’t fat if you looked at me but around my waist was where everything accumulated. I lost 6 inches off my waist I’m down to the waist I had in my 20s. I’m down to the weigh I was in my 20s. No longer diabetic no longer have high blood pressure and no longer have acid reflux. My energy levels came back and I was able to start lifting weights and play tennis and hiking. When you do the keto diet within a few weeks you lose that hunger to eat all the time. That’s when intermittent fasting or time restricted fasting whatever you wanna call it works the best. One of the benefits of keto and intermittent fasting is you don’t lose muscle mass. Compared to say a vegan diet where you just start wasting away over the years unless you’re very vigorous on adding protein and keeping muscle. No amounts of sit ups and crunches could do what keto did for my waist line. I’m 68.

@@kicknadeadcat Wow!, that is an amazing 2 year journey you went through and i can't even stay on for 2 weeks. At the moment i try to healthy eating for 4 days, like vegie, fish, nut, unsweetened yogurt kind of stuff and no cakes. On the weekend i baked and 1 or 2 serving on cake a take instead half a cake like i used to be 2months ago. I do 16/8 or 18/6 fasting everyday. Hopefully this will make a slight change when i go for a blood testafter the lockdown released.
So, what were you bsl and are you insulin dependent and now you are longer diabetic?. That is soooo amazing to hear and so inspiration. What exactly is keto, is it like vegies and no carb?. I like to follow simple and less preparation method.

@@lilychau1671 I'm a motivated person when I thought my health was becoming a factor I just did it and never looked back. Keto is a lifestyle not a diet. I would suggest you research it thoroughly. I suggest dr. Eric Westman of diet doctor or dr. Berg. There are many others. If you do it correctly in a week or 2 the urges for sweets and carbs will dissipate. You will need to take extra salt, potassium and magnesium In the beginning. You will lose a lot of water weight the 1st few weeks. To avoid the sugar withdrawals which come in the form of sluggishness and maybe even Headaches from losing those 3 minerals. I spent 2 months researching everything I could about it until I decided to do it. If you do it correctly, Your hunger will dissipate, in a couple of weeks you can start doing Intermittent fasting which will greatly increase your progress. That's my advice

I was a severe type 2 diabetic of over 17 years who recently discovered insulin as a root cause of metabolic diseases - and intermittent fasting and a low carb, ketogenic diet way of life.
I have personal experience in everything discussed here. When I started this way of eating I dropped my A1c from a high of 14.1 to a normal 5.5 , got off 4 medications and insulin, and lost 80lbs so far. All within 6 months. I wasn’t hungry once this whole time. A ketogenic diet and IF have absolutely given me my life back and is easily sustainable for the rest of my life.

Dr. Fung, I suggest you write a new book entitled, "Don't Eat Less; Eat Less Often". Not having the word "fast" in the title will appeal to a lot of people PLUS many of us want to understand better how we arrive at the AMOUNT of food eaten during our window if we don't count calories. This title will appeal to people's normal tendency to want to eat a good amount of food. Intermittent Fasting sometimes has me putting my diet on a diet. (I know that IF is NOT a diet.) Just trying to bring the point home about how much we CAN and SHOULD or SHOULDN'T eat during our window. Thanks. You deserve the Nobel Prize for Science.

"Prion" and Virus researcher "Dr. Joel Pedersen ", from the University of Wisconsin, found that prions become 680 times more infectious in certain soils. Pedersen also found that sewage treatment does not inactivate prions. Therefore, prions are lethal, mutating, migrating and multiplying everywhere sewage is dumped.
“Our results suggest that if prions enter municipal wastewater treatment systems, most of the agent would bond to sewage sludge, survive anaerobic digestion, and be present in treated biosolids,” Pedersen said.

This morning, July 22nd, my blood glucose was 157. I quit soda that day and started doing a 16/8 fast. Cut sugar and most carbs(about 30g a day now). Almost cut it in half in 11 days.
    Thanks Dr Fung!!!

Despite the billions that have been spent on prescription drug research, there has not been a pharmaceutical intervention that can drop blood sugar that dramatically as what you are able to do, and do so WITHOUT harmful side effects. You are living proof, along with countless others, that food is medicine.

Counting calories did work, maybe 2 weeks, and then it stopped. Trying to reduce even more calories only led to starvation and muscle loss!! Getting rid of carbs did work LONG TIME for me! Extra kilos went away, mood got better, and overall physical well being improved a lot! Now, after 2 years of intermittent fasting, non to low carbs, is the rule. I am now used to 18:6 to 24 and 48 hrs fasting, that it feels normal. No hunger problems at all. It is such a freedom to not have to prepare and eat food all the time!! And I never ever count calories!! Try it! You will never regret it!!

Great discussion! I think the part that is so interesting to me is when Dr. Fung is talking about top end athletes fasting out of season but having high caloric diets in season. Before grocery stores existed we would have done this naturally with the changing of the earth’s seasons as well. Hunter/gatherers would more than likely be feasting on berries, bird’s eggs, and migrating animals during warmer months and colder months would’ve had less food on hand and more than likely were fasting, not necessarily by choice. Once we moved to an agrarian society we also would have times of feast in the summer and autumn with crops we grew and animals raised and slaughtered. But without modern refrigeration and preservation techniques food would’ve been much sparser in the winter months and more than likely there were times of fasting for many people. In today’s world with a global food economy, grocery stores and restaurants in every town, refrigerators and freezers in every household, and preservatives to keep food good for months at a time, we never have a natural fasting period anymore. We don’t follow our natural seasons any longer. I am also very curious as to the affects of daylight/darkness on our ideal fasting window.

I couldn’t lose weight on a calorie restricted diet. I was soooo frustrated‼️ If I did lose weight on a lower calorie diet, eventually my body would adjust to the lower calorie diet & my body would go back to it’s set point 😢💔.
Fasting was miraculous for me. Intermittent fasting with no support from my local physicians, I lost 47 pounds in just a few months. It wasn’t anywhere near as hard as I expected.
Now I understand what to eat when I’m eating-like bacon 🥓. It’s really satiating. I never gave up butter, although everyone said we should all switch to margarine. I didn’t care for the taste & since it came from a cow, it was natural. My grandmother had eaten it well into her 80s. Also, we had a lot of fried foods. They were all fried in lard (which was kept under the sink in a fryer until it went rancid; then it was replaced.)

They've been trained incorrectly. If you haven't yet check out the work of Nina Teicholz. Her book is very good. I think the issue is that many of these doctors have been educated in the old way of doing things that was based on he research of Ansel Keys in the 50s. Because most doctors do not learn much about nutrition at all They succumb to calorie in, calorie out and other seemingly intuitive measures that don't actually work.
It doesn't help our cause that there are advocates who go too far. Dr Fung doesn't. He acknowledges that carbs are delicious and should be eaten sometimes. When you go on a cruise you eat the cruise food and you enjoy it. Then you come home and you fast for 3 days and do some more intermittent fasting for a week to get rid of the junk in your system. Don't eat all the time, don't fast all the time. There is a time to be more rigid and there's a time to relax. I'm glad that you are doing well with this and continued good health.

In a saner world this would be a Pulitzer-winner interviewing a Nobel.
I owe them both more than I can say.

Im 5'7 and went from 280 to 168 in 10 months doing OMAD zero carb.. Went from a bulging 54'' waist to a slick 30"
OMAD wasn't intentional, I just ate so much fat during my meal that I would stay satiated throughout the entire day. Always ate until satiated and never allowed to go hungry.. Sometimes i would eat in a 16 hr window, sometimes in a 48.. You heard that right.. You can stay full for more than a day. Never counted a calorie in my life..

IF has actually helped me overcome my disordered eating patterns. Lots of people say fasting can make things worse for someone with an eating disorder but tbh, its a type of 'control' that is freeing. No more obsessing over every little thing that goes into your mouth, I no longer lie in bed and count everything I ate throughout the day, no more subtracting from my daily calorie allowance every time I swallow. Of course, overeating on a consistent basis in your eating window will cause weight gain but the fact that fasting gives your body time to actually tap into fat reserves is so reassuring that you end up stressing less which means less cortisol, more stable blood glucose levels, and better insulin sensitivity.
Thanks for such an informative interview! Fantastic analogies too!
