  • Democracy is about having choices - and authoritarianism is about not having them, says lawyer and writer Ian Bassin. Detailing the seven steps of the authoritarian playbook, he invites us all to put aside our differences and rethink our role in the fight for freedom, revealing the hope and power behind every choice we make.

    Those who dont learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Without a preferential voting system or a run-off 2nd round, America is basically forced to pick which one of 2 candidates is least bad. Unfortunately the crystal ball is opaque and there is a high probability that both candidates could in future be historically judged as a bad choice for differing reasons. So i guess the second round longer-term question is which candidate is likely to uphold the critical democratic institutions so that a democracy can be preserved to be able to pick better candidates next time? The answer to this second question appears to point heavily in one direction. It is possibly easier to see as an outsider not caught in the short term issues and emotions faced by Americans. Good luck, America, you got this, I believe in you❤

      "Only a Sith deals in absolutes" - Obi Wan
      If a politician breaks the law, say, orchestrates an assassination of an unfriendly judge for example, should we forgo the criminal prosecution of that politician in the name of "preventing election interference"?
      What is more important, giving voters the choice of voting for a politician who is accused of orchestrating an assassination, or upholding the federal laws which prohibit conspiracy for murder? I think it's more important to prosecute the murder conspiracy than to allow that person to remain on the ballot for the voters to decide, isn't it?
      The converse is also true. There are instances of authoritarians seeking to use the state's prosecutorial powers to silence opponents. So it is important for citizens to understand concepts like gaslighting, evidence, facts, rhetorical fallacies, propaganda etc. It's important for a person to understand the difference between the physical evidence submitted in a US court of law against Donald Trump (signed checks, financial statements, sworn testimony from credible sources), and the "evidence" presented against Joe Biden which includes things like screenshots of tweets, and testimony of a man who is being sought for violating international arms embargos.

      Therefore, at some level, speech should be regulated. This can be seen as authoritarian, but it’s not if there is a council that decides the matter. That council should be made up of random citizens, IMO.

    "What would happen if a leader chose not to follow the rules?"
    If the SYSTEM, by design, does not prevent that, and it relies on the goodness of the ruler to uphold anything, then you don't have a system; your "system" is in the "person." That's like saying I have designed a secure system, and the security of my system relies in users not trying to steal, for if they still, they will break the security of my system.
    "...the first thing to understand is how these modern authoritarian movements dismantle democracies"
    Dismantle which democracies? First of all, don't confuse "authoritarian" with "autocratic." You are applying "authoritarian" in the wrong context, but we'll not digress into that. Secondly, there is no single democracy in the world. The U.S. is not a democracy, every educated person knows that (learn more on our page), and knows the use of the word "democracy" for America is nothing but propaganda (which the U.S. and its politicians are again, remarkably good at). Most of these "democracies" that have been "dismantled" are in truth autocratic systems (that they copied from the U.S. which told them it was a democracy) which allowed politicians to bully citizens; it literally subverts the needs and development potential of citizens, for parochial party interests (again, an anomaly of the system which founding fathers of the U.S. did not plan for, and most feared). For an already wealthy country, the effect of this is not so strong, but for a struggling economy, it gets to a tipping point. And when citizens lose faith in this system they have been told is a "democracy" that absolutely gives robs them of their opportunities in truth, they look to military leaders to save them from that rigged system; which they do, and subsequently hold on to power too, as their saviors. So they jump from one autocratic (republican system) to another (military or other).
    "Russia's invasion of Ukraine is the exception"
    Again, American propaganda. The U.S. has a vague conception of democracy, an illusionary goodness, that means everything and nothing, that allows it to apply it to anything it supports, and gives it permission to fight it's wars. Russia's attack on Ukraine is labeled as "an attack on democracy" to stir support from its citizens because it draws them in as parties to it, while ignoring the real factors and causes. Whether Ukraine is a democracy or not is a question of its constitution. Don't confuse attacking a country with "attacking democracy;" see how the word is applied for propaganda. Ukraine is no democracy and neither is the U.S. or any other country. You don't know what a true democracy looks like, structurally.
    It would take far too much time to correct every single error in that presentation but its chock full of it.

    • @futureofgov
      @futureofgov 2 місяці тому

      @@danilolabbate I'm not sure where you got the "well, that doesn't seem like a real democracy to me" quote or suggestion; maybe you can point exactly where it was said or inferred so I can better respond to it.
      But, the U.S. is not a real democracy. This is not something that we say "because we/this/that person said/thinks so or not" but actually something that is proven on so many different levels.
      It is also not a theoretical question; very far from. These are very real and simple issues. The U.S. is neither constitutionally, structurally or in practice a democracy in any shape or form. I cannot emphasize that enough.
      The reason this is difficult to grasp is that the current system is all we have known, you have no frame of reference to see it any other way; unless you allow yourself to consider the possibility, and just ask the right questions. Again, these are irrefutable verifiable facts.

    • @danilolabbate

    • @futureofgov
      @futureofgov 2 місяці тому

      @@danilolabbate that's why you have it wrong. The U.N., EIU etc. rely on altered definitions of democracy (they make up stuff, mostly based on the errors of Joseph Schumpeter, who alone changed the definition of democracy because he couldn't grasp or work out certain things). Now this is not a question of being pedantic. Those changes and inconsistencies in definitions cause real problems.
      Democracy is not about rights, freedom of association, freedom of speech etc. Those are questions of good governance. That is why some monarchies in the past have pursued rights, freedoms and constitutionalism for their subjects and their reign, and it doesn't make them democracies. Once you begin to mix up definitions you create A LOT of problems for yourself; and that's why scholars will tell you democracy is a complex subject and its looks all theoretical etc. They mess it up.
      Democracy is simple. Democracy (like all forms of governance) answers the simple question: who is governing? THAT IS ALL. When the people hold power and control decisions and affairs of their country, that is democracy. The U.S. was DELIBERATELY designed not to do that. For a number of reasons. (you can learn more on our page).
      The U.S. is today in reality an autocracy, through the office of the presidency. The presidency is even more powerful than a king. The president controls everything, even in spite of the illusion of separation of powers. And the immeasurable costs and effects of this are all around you everyday, you just don't see it. You are not allowed to see it, because they tell you you have a democracy and this is the best you can get, on purpose. The U.S. government itself KNOWS it is not a democracy, even as it uses that word generously, for propaganda. On paper it is meant to be a "republic" (rule of the few) but even that was long lost. Again, in reality, the U.S. (like most other countries that copied its systems) is one of the most purest forms or examples of autocracy you can get.
      As you can see if I want to buttress this further I will write pages. But it is so evident in more ways than I can describe. Again, one might still have difficulty changing their perception now because they do not know what a true democracy looks like and so many other questions unanswered, they have no frame of reference, but a true democracy, in practice would look very different from what you know/see today. These are not paper discussions.

    I think a miscalculation on the part of the speaker is not considering that because of how far to the right in objective terms America's political Overton Window has shifted since 1970 relative to the rest of the world, the subjectively "American Center Right" were already basically far right extremists relative to the rest of the world or any sort of objective scale. So it wasn't so much just right of center opportunists cynically trying to leash a proto-fascists movement for their own gain with the intent to still be in the driver seat and then predictably being the first to die when it became clear they couldn't. There were definitely that sort within the GOP, but so many of them were already far right, reactionary extremists in many ways that Trump and his movement weren't so much a rabid wild animal they thought they could tame; rather Trump and his movement were just the final culmination of so much of the GOP's work for the past 50 years. Trump is the apotheosis of the right wing propaganda and white Christian nationalist oligarchic capture of more and more of our government, the 'center right' cynical opportunists were already a fading light in a GOP increasingly filled with rabid true believers and opportunistic grifters, which is why the ultimately had no power to stop Trump once they let him in the house.

    We can do direct democracy today, with AI to manage, internet to connect, Reddit could be individualized caucuses for various groups of citizens where we debate the issues on the merits. I feels, though we the people may form the government as said in the constitution, but it certainly feels like the government is this bureaucratic business thing that operates with a political class. What if the ideas directly came from the people. So many times these days you have the candidates being like here’s what I think, but the job is public service… why do they not solely answer to the people and Inact their will…

      Authoritarianism is bad. It's a fact and I will argue with you all day if I have to. Every citizen deserves the right to participate in the political process they live within. The reason everything is failing is because our politicians have become beholden to CEOs, shareholders, lobbyists, and wealthy donors at the top at the cost of true democracy. We have the technology and ability now to move from a representative democracy to a direct democracy where every vote matters and every citizen gets a say in the systems they live within. We need to update our election process to more fully reflect the desires of the people instead of benefitting a privileged, powerful few at the top.
