I remember there was this Kiosk for N64 games at Target. It had no controller, just some board with flat button stickers for each game to play the trailer. I pressed the one for Bomberman Hero and it was some narrator freaking out yelling "It's Bomberman Hero and he can Jump Now!" That spoke to me since I was wondering why I could not jump in Bomberman 64
He couldn't jump because he can't do anything that isn't related to blowing shit up or murdering everything that isn't him. Hell in Bomberman 64 you can blow up what I assume are hotels full of people. Seriously look up the second video on the thestrawhatno's LP of it, it's shockingly morbid.

This and Bomberman 64 were my biggest childhood games. Thank you for reviewing more of my favorite mascots. Also Atomic Bomberman was also my favorite game on pc.
19:35 As weird as that method to unlocking a secret seems to us, I actually think it's kinda neat. When you think about how kids play games, mashing start to get to the game quicker, definitely seems like something they would do. For some reason I just found that part really charming. It's amazing how differently kids and adults can end up playing a game.

God I loved this game so much. That soundtrack absolutely slaps, too. Hearing it always takes me back to a time when life was a lot more carefree.

19:35 Another Start-button secret? I remember that Bomberman 64 used that same trick to encourage Japanese players to buy the Joycard 64 Turbo controller (conveniently also made by Bomberman's developers). You could unlock extra multiplayer stages by rapidly pressing start at the main menu. That way, you wouldn't have to kill your fingers mashing, and Hudson makes another sale! Looks like they wanted to further reward buyers in this game too.
TBF, Hudson has done this with basically /every single one/ of their games on Nintendo platforms, since they were the creators/fathers of the turbo controller and all that...

@@TheBcoolGuy Yeah. If you can even call it that. It's basically a reskin. I want an original title written in an up-to-date game engine with stunning graphics and an interesting storyline. I have quite a few ideas for that.
At age 6 this was my first Bomberman game. I loved this game back then (2003) even though I could only go through like the first couple of worlds or so. This vid brought me back to that age a little bit. Great vid!
This was my first exposure to Bomberman, so I was confused when I tried another more typical bomberman. I thought the entire series was going to be like this! I wouldn't mind them trying a platformer again sometime!
It's always interesting to see you cover again. You go into such detail and give the game a fair shot rather than ramble at a few levels and call it a day. It's truly quality work and it shows. Great work!
I would praise this game quite a bit more than you did, Nitro. The sound effects are top-notch and unique, and the environments have great variety. The levels are pretty short but there are a LOT of them (way more than other 3D platformers that have levels). This makes the game very different from the open-area collectathons that dominated the world of 3D platformers the moment 3D became viable. In that sense, this game has a lot in common with 2D platformers -- it's less about exploration and more about linear platforming skill. And yet it uses the 3rd dimension just enough to provide some exploration and hidden thing, and the third axis works great for interesting visuals and for meaningful enemy placement. In this way, it's much like Super Mario 3D World, but a few generations earlier. Because of the fixed camera and the weird bunch of stages, the game just feels eerie to me. You often end up inside weird techno buildings or jumping around strange indoor duct-systems suspended over an abyss. It makes you wonder who built these, and who uses them? I mean really, it's completely unique. I don't know a game that built such a mysterious vibe just because of its platform-driven level design. And these strange aesthetics in every level integrate cleverly into the gameplay so often. This stage is all about its elevator system, this stage is all about moving into the z-axis, this stage is about teleporters, etc. And don't forget the mirror stage -- that one is brilliant. As for 100%ing the game -- I think it was done terrifically. The levels really are short, so if you just want to beat the game, it's a pretty simple and fun experience that a kid could probably pull off. But if you want to up the difficulty, you try to collect everything in every level. And this would be annoying in so many other games, but again, the levels here are short and linear. So there's really not much to it; it's not super difficult, nor is it a tedious game of hide-and-seek. For an experienced gamer, it's a perfectly suitable challenge, and it frankly redeems the game. Without this design, it wouldn't hold my attention long enough. I would just beat and shove it under the rug. But man, no matter what you think of the gameplay, the sound effect for picking up crystals -- mmm! Man, it's just so glassy and crunchy. It's delicious. This game's sound design is just like no other. So I've got to give this game the ultimate praise: It's not the greatest game ever. It's not the masterpiece that aspiring designers should bow down to. But it's exactly what a video game should be: It's excellent fun, it's imaginative, it has an appropriate challenge for everyone, and it uses the audio-visual and player-controlled nature of the medium to the fullest. And it does it all on its own terms. Again, it might not be on the Mt. Rushmore of gaming, but it's good AND unique; if you want to play a game like Bomberman Hero, you pretty much have only one option -- play Bomberman Hero.
Oh I still own a copy. I just meant that they haven't tried to make another like it since then. Basically the developers just stick to the normal formula for Bomberman now.
There are a lot more changes in the Japanese version of Bomberman Hero. For starters, power-ups are much more plentiful in on-foot levels, more than you need to get a perfect score. In particular, the game was much more generous with health pickups. More importantly, you know how when you collect 200 gems you get a health upgrade? In the Japanese version, that was permanent to your file, hence why a lot of late game stages are so much more unforgiving - they expected you to play them with more than just four hit points.
That explains a lot I though it was more along the lines of, this is the "git gud" section of the game. I was still able to do most of the game with 4 health until the ship and final planet.
A Bomberman platformer? Check out Pocket Bomberman for the Game Boy Color (although it plays more like a conventional Bomberman game but with gravity).
8:58 Air pods? As in, the thing that goes in your ears? good video so far... Jk you always have good videos! Btw, are you wearing a Rayman sweat shirt?
I'm really impressed you knew about the three bonus levels for the start-mashing. I half wondered if I needed to make a cheeky comment about you missing that after watching, but nope! You really do your research, haha.
okay just saying this now thank you for reviewing this. I have so many memories of playing this either as a kid and as an adult and all of them I loved playing this odd little gem from Hudson. From the great music and levels to the unique gameplay I really enjoyed playing this game. I also agree to most of the points of this review (minus the flying and aqua stages since I kinda liked those stages) but the rest of them I either understood or agreed with. Awesome work dude.
What I think is REALLY weird is that Bomberman Jetters is based on a Bomberman anime of the same name that NEVER got dubbed (Makes me wonder if they localized the game to try and gauge interest in bringing the anime outside of Japan but scrapped it for reasons)
Bomberman Hero was supposed to be a Bonk game and they changed it for marketing reasons. This explains why the game is so different and random in relationship to the other games. And explain all the weird "robot attachments" too. It's a quirky and clunky game but I still love it. Great video as always.
I don't know if it's the nostalgia speaking, but I used to love this game as a kid in the 90s. And then the game was re-released for the Virtual Console on Wii when I was around 18 or so, and I managed to complete it, and the game didn't seemed to age poorly to me. There was only one stage where I really struggled to get the maximum score. This video brought some nice memories, thanks dude
Not that obscure of a game tbh. I played this but not Bomberman 64. People don't even know Second Attack exists as evidenced by it's GDQ run and the donation messages.
the shape of the explosion in bomberman 64 was actually a pretty nice twist in the formula. its my favorite to this day... my family playing it and loving it every holiday helps haha
Man I love your videos, they're so natural and genuine, the bits of comedy you add aren't forced at all, and I feel like you really know what you're talking about, and you're extremely fair in your judgement. Bomberman Hero is my least favorite of the three N64 Bomberman games. I know you focus on platformers a lot, but I'd really love to see you tackle the other two games, those are some of my favorites, despite their clunkiness at times.
NItro i gotta say dude iam so proud of you! i was there at the silent hill days and i was hooked ever since! you are currently one of my favs and again, I am very proud of you. Much love and best of luck!

Love your exposition in all your reviews and personally, hearing your opinion on so many childhood favourites (Bomberman Hero, Chameleon Twist, Sonic Adventure etc) you seriously seem like a rad dude haha (pun intended of course). Keep up the amazing work man! Cheers from Ontario!
I grew up with the three Bomberman titles in the N64. I never even knew it was a whole series before then when I was a kid. I'd be interested into looking for more games from the past.
I recall playing a bomberman game on the GBA that was some sort of weird blend of legend of zelda, pokemon and other top-down adventure games. I have very fond memories of it to this day, I believe it was called 'Bomberman Tournament' a good example of doing something interesting with a franchise by changing it's style completely. This was still 2D top-down though, which honestly really still cemented it as an actual bomberman-game. Had some really catchy music too, and plenty to explore.

Bomberman 64: The Second Attack is my favorite game of all time. It's hard to get an actual copy of, but I'd say it's super worth playing.
It was amazing. Wish the world realized it existed, but it seems to have been lost to time.
@@harmonixerraze Just emulate the game
Oh I still own a copy. I just meant that they haven't tried to make another like it since then. Basically the developers just stick to the normal formula for Bomberman now.
@@deprecated8036 Utterly no shame in emulating it. It's prohibitively expensive to buy these days.
I like how it has a side game where you can't stop jumping and just have to climb as high as you can.
@@BagOfMagicFood yeah, that mode was pretty cool but hard to master.
I got to say, your videos REALLY do represant the quality section of youtube! Thank you for all that great content!!!
8:58
Air pods?
As in, the thing that goes in your ears?
good video so far...
Jk you always have good videos!
Btw, are you wearing a Rayman sweat shirt?
Underrated, quality content. I showed my brother your Lisa videos not too long ago and he purchased Lisa the Painful + Lisa the Joyful last week.
I much prefer the first Bomberman 64 and the Second Attack. For some reason, I could never get into Hero, but that music is too good.
I'm really impressed you knew about the three bonus levels for the start-mashing. I half wondered if I needed to make a cheeky comment about you missing that after watching, but nope! You really do your research, haha.
You've used this game's music so many time in your reviews I was wondering when you where going to talk about the game itself! XD
I have this video to thank for introducing me to the best video game species ever, Louie
Oh boy.
Let's listen to Redial, for 12 different stages!!!
*not that theres any thing wrong with that :)*
Dude, you MESSED me up nostalgia-wise with Atomic Bomberman. This was my earliest gaming memory ever.
Would you review super magnetic neo for the dreamcast
okay just saying this now thank you for reviewing this.
Who cares if the Bomberman lore is confusing, I just wanna blow stuff up!
There is no Bomberman canon
@@ralphjeremy6590 there really is tho
Bomberman lore is confusing af considering the franchise got rebooted like 5 times...
What I think is REALLY weird is that Bomberman Jetters is based on a Bomberman anime of the same name that NEVER got dubbed (Makes me wonder if they localized the game to try and gauge interest in bringing the anime outside of Japan but scrapped it for reasons)
Oddly enough this was the first Bomberman game I've ever played. Nice to see people remember it even if somewhat different.
oh hey, just got the Watch out for Rolling Rocks joke...
Hecckk yea, a new Nitrorad always brightens my week. c:
Would you ever cover Bomberman Jetters for the gamecube?
I don't think so... Sadly
This video brought some nice memories, thanks dude
bomberman hero is the only bomberman ive played and i LOVE IT plus the soundtrack is fireeeee
really appreciate what...had to be you slapping your own face and recording the sound just for that youtube comment bit. That's dedication.
Do you smell that it's nostalgia..... the sweet aroma of nostalgia....😌
Been watching your vids for a while and I gotta say, it's hard nowadays to find someone that gives games a fair shot.
Keep it up.
The Bomberman game everyone forgets .
I never forgot you SonOfABitch.
(sorry)
Not that obscure of a game tbh. I played this but not Bomberman 64. People don't even know Second Attack exists as evidenced by it's GDQ run and the donation messages.
Name me a Bomberman game that's not underrated/obscure.
This is one of the only well known ones.
And NOT cause it's considered really bad like Act Zero.
I was really happy to see another Nitro Rad episode in my sub feed. Keep up the good work, Nitro Rad
iS tHiS a ReUpLoAd?!
jk, good vid.
YO THIS GAME IS SICK, I'm super hyped to see this video in my sub box, thanks Nitrorad!
12:24 is the funniest moment of the video in my opinion. 😂
is that snowman around 18 minutes wearing Kamina sunglasses?!
officially the coolest snowman of all time.
There was one other Bomberman platformer just before this: Pocket Bomberman!
the shape of the explosion in bomberman 64 was actually a pretty nice twist in the formula. its my favorite to this day... my family playing it and loving it every holiday helps haha
Looking forward to the classic, bomberman zero on Xbox. Everybody's favourite...
@singular on1 Well, i'm working on an SMT2 video so eventually!
Bomberman Act Zero actually...
What about Bomerman 64: the Second Attack?
NItro i gotta say dude iam so proud of you! i was there at the silent hill days and i was hooked ever since! you are currently one of my favs and again, I am very proud of you. Much love and best of luck!
I remember bomberman hero such a underrated classic in my book
Just recently started watching your reviews and you instantly became my favourite.
12:27 OK, That was actually pretty Funny! XD
I grew up with the three Bomberman titles in the N64. I never even knew it was a whole series before then when I was a kid. I'd be interested into looking for more games from the past.
I know you're tired of all those "but was it Nitro?" Kinda jokes, but you did kinda bring it upon yourself you know, mister.
But was Nitros... RAD?

I sure wished someone loved me :' )
