Many years ago I learned a lot from an old friend who was very handy with wood/hand tools. One thing was to soak axe and sledgehammer heads in antifreeze probably twice a year. It would keep the wood fibers swelled up in the head and doesn't dry as it will like water does. I've never had a loose handle since.

My dad and i are currently restoring an axe for my brother in law. Come to find out, we both watch your channel and have taken tips and instruction from you for this restoration. Thanks cody, you've brought a father and son together with a shared commonality not only in your channel but working with our hands on wood and steel. Side note, 3 weeks ago I was diagnosed with a second tyoe of cancer since the 1st of this year. This time a bit more serious and multiple surgeries & chemo will be required. Couldnt think of a better time to bond with my dad with a project we both have a passion for and to help distract from what's to come. Thanks cody & fam for all that you stand for and stand firm in. God bless your family.

Painting isn't just for eye candy, if you paint inside and out correctly, everything gets caulked and sealed up, rot is properly dealt with so it doesn't spread further, and the building is protected from the elements.

About a year or so ago I did my shoulder/neck in to in to the point I had trouble sleeping and looking over my shoulder when changing lanes/ pulling out from side roads whilst driving was very painful, as well as my work as a landscaper. I went to a bed/pillow place and bought a new pillow that was much larger than my previous one and overnight it was a heap better. A year later and it is a distant memory. I hope you are able to work through this set-back and be able to get back to love doing so much.

Thanks for heeding our calls to get an MRI. You’ll be super glad you did. As someone who has experienced major shoulder issues i find it much more pertinent to diagnose the issue than to treat first and then figure out if that’s working.

Thanks for putting out good content!

  • @aleveraj

Hi Cody, Helko axes are widely used here in Chile, but I don't think that model is currently for sale here.
It is NOT a splitting maul, but I think it's a Heavy Vario 2000 Felling axe. The splitting maul is even chunkier than that one. Fun fact: that guard, is not part of the axe head itself. It gets sandwiched in place between the handle and the head using the two screws. (Personally I don't like the system). Supposedly, you can interchange the head to make it whatever you want, from a hatchet to a heavy splitter. Helko makes 5 different blades for the system.
If you can get your hands on a Casco Axe, also made by Helko Werks, you'll get a REALLY RUSTIC, old fashioned german axe, that can last you a lifetime. The eyes in those things are HUGE, so you can fit a pretty heavy handle in them. Best regards!!

Received one of these for Christmas last year. Was skeptical at first but after splitting over 8 cords of oak with it, I'm a believer. However, the through screws came loose, fatigued and had to be replaced and (even though I haven't broken it yet), a replacement handle is pretty expensive. The slightly curved handle and the head geometry deliver lots of energy transfer to the wood. Overall, a surprisingly excellent splitting maul!

Ive owned a couple of the Helko Werk Vario 2000 series axes for a few years now and can say they are amazing! I have the heavy splitter and have put it threw the gauntlet many a times. All I do is split by hand and it has stood up to some nasty stuff! The head will loosen over time but a few cranks with the Allen wrench and it’s locked right back up no big deal. My only complaint is last year I did end up snapping one of the Allen screws off which was upsetting but after a few years of heavy abuse I guess I can’t complain. Customer service was fast and kind I had the replacement bolts in a few days time. I would suggest to grab a few extras ahead of time if you plan to use it has your main splitter to avoid down time but other than that excellent axe with a unique and pleasantly curved handle that pops large rounds with ease👍 When your back up and running please do a review. I would like to see your qualified take on it!!

One thing I’ve done to an axe handle I didn’t exactly trust to sit well is to melt hot glue into its edges. Hot glue melts at about a hundred degrees Celsius, which isn’t enough to destroy the metal or the wood.
So you can have some hot glue on the edges, then use a hot air gun to melt it further into the edge. And if you want it loose, you can just melt it again.
I haven’t used the axe a lot, so no guarantees, but it seems to hold up well so far.

DMSO applied topically for your shoulder injury you will be amazed at the results. I fixed my shoulder by using DMSO and daily yoga stretches. Also hydration is very important. Blessings to you and your family.🙏🌟❤️

Are the bolt holes lined? .5 inch or .75 inch steel all thread tube , epoxied in place , will act like pillar bedding . Make sure the tube runs long and file it to be flush with he handle, this will take the compression off of the wood grain when fit correctly . It's exactly like pillar bedding a gunstock . Wrist pins could be used to support the wood grain as well as a recoil pin .
All designed to mechanically strengthen the wood while spreading and somewhat reducing kinetic energy transfer into... things ...like a wooden rifle stock.
I say this knowing much time has gone by since the making of this video and the health issue are on the mend if not healed fully.

I had a pin tear on the rotator cuff, and damage to the short head of the bicep. It has never been right since, but you can build strength back. It took me 3months before I could hold a clipboard and write against it for an extended period. I also had to stop using barbell for weights, because when it decided to go, it would go without warning.

Content not lame at all! Really enjoying the talk about the new house, can’t wait to see it, and the “things my father and grandfather taught me!”

If you want a quick way to tell if it's your rotator cuff, place your right hand on your left shoulder than raise your right elbow up. If you have pain in the right shoulder, it's your rotator cuff.

You can soak the head of the handle in antifreeze to keep it tight when it wears in. The antifreeze will soak in and it won't evaporate out leaving the wood a bit swollen

I have found with axe handles that sit for a long time that work loose the best thing is to sit the head end in a shallow bowl of oil or even water if have nothing else and the handle will swell and stay tight
