Finky008 he says in the video the EXACT axe is sold my many companies by different names. Plus it being a "camp axe" and being used to pull tent stakes makes a hell of a lot more sense than it to be a nail puller. You can argue what it's labeled as all day, but it is what it is.
bought one of these about 19 years ago and I've beat the tar out of it and it's still going strong. Certainly not top of the line but does a great job for weekend kindling making and I never took the edge down haha.
issue with budget socket sets is they use "white metal" which tends to be a very cheap steel alloy, it works well for tightening things regularly but as soon as you stress them a large amount I have found they bust out the edge a lot, I have been using cheap sockets for the past month or so and I have had 5 bust out/snap on me, at no time did i use a cheater bar or stress them beyond anything i would put my good socket set though. My point it if you need to you can usually get by with a cheap socket set but if you have hard bolts (on something like an older car or engine) you will probably want to invest a little bit more money on a set with a good warranty or reputation. ( i have had good experience with mastercraft from canadian tire. a stanley set has broken out on me a few times, but apparently they have a lifetime warranty,) I think the key is to set your expectations low for a cheaper set.
Something you likely already know, but worth mentioning for anyone who's not familiar with power sharpening. When you're removing material, ALWAYS used the coarsest bit you can control. The coarser the belt, the less heat it generates per unit of material removed, particularly given that the larger chips carry away a lot of the thermal energy along with them. Your choice of a 36-grit was excellent for a starter profile like that.
Anything a person does has a level of danger associated to it. If you have a average knowledge of knife and axe making, you will know this is how to do the taper grind. Perhaps a bit of research into a subject one intends to comments on would save them from sounding like a, how can I put it polity, idiot.
I feel that a chainsaw is something you ought to thoroughly trust. It should be a hefty investment and not a bargain brand that could be unsafe to use. A lot like computer power supplies that I build with.
I have had that same ax since 2005, not as bright and shiny but still works like a charm for $10. I agree that being so short makes it difficult and a little treacherous as you need to get close to the wood and swing with a lot of force.
Nice Video! I have a similar one for the last 5 years. the "nail pull " is useful on a camp axe for taking out the tent pegs and the flat head is good for pounding them in without needing to bring an additional hammer!

For a "camp hachet" its not a "nail puller" its a tent stake puller. ;D Not quite as dumb. Same reason you have the hanging hook or loop on the end of a camp mallet. To pull the tent stake.

Patrick Renfrew That could be. I think you'd need to open it up some more with a round file for a nail type tent stake. For a "camp hatchet", folks might hammer a few nails partway into a tree to hang or tie stuff from and then use the same tool to pull them back out (not good practice).
Neat tip: If you have an old rocket hammer that needs a new handle grip and don't need to conserve the vintage looks, take it to a golf club store, and they can put any fancy club grip you want- as the handle is actually based on a golf club for vibration dampening and force concentration. And I am not trying to criticize you, but you should be wearing safety glasses when using the belt sander
If the metal handle is the most significant flaw then could you try looking for the cheapest worthwhile wooden-handled hatchet? It's interesting to check the overall cheapest option but I'd be interested to see potential improvements.
Video after video, I don't cease to be amazed at the richness of your vocabulary and smoothness of your speech. If you want to mildly increase the cost, remove the rubber off the handle and rewrap it with lether or proper rubber and it really improves the vibration damping. As for a next tool, a good low cost bench vise, or even 2 one for wood one for general purpose would be great.
All timber framing is done with the wood green, It's when it dries and shrinks that tighten it. The only problem is that you have to erect it right away before it drys and warps.
Ohhh! Well if he'd do a video on it again I woulda known that ;) lol Thank you for the info though! That makes sense!!! Probably rough on the tools. How come everything else is done with dry wood?
Regular stick framing is done with dry wood because the nails will not hold. If you have ever worked with rough cut lumber you learn that quick. Ive maid that mistake a few times. LOL!!!
Maybe he should maybe he shouldn't. He is a grown man and can make his own choices. I am not one to judge I very rarely wear ppe and still have all my limbs and eyes. Keep up the great work you do Cody, love all the videos you do!
I use this camper's axe as a wedge when making some kindling for making fires in my wood stove. You are correct is is a very nicely compact axe for emergency or once in a while chopping. I wouldn't want to use it on a regular basis for chopping. I like your show it is informative and you views on many subjects are along the same lines. Keep the videos coming.
Sorry, but I wish you were wearing eye protection while operating your power sander. I am restoring a dropped steel forged Fuller #16 hatchet/axe myself. It has similarities to the axe your purchased on Amazon, so your video caught my attention. Thank you for this post.
I know how you love your Japanese pull saw, well how about doing a cheap version say from Harbor Freight Tools (10 In. Japanese Style Double-Edge Saw) under $10.00.
I picked this hatchet up a while ago and worked the edge on it. Found it to be a pretty decent little. The vibration does suck though but it isn't something I find myself using all the time. It has found its home in my survival bug out bag.
***** except those steels they use are proven to have better corrosion resistance, toughness, and edge retention. If you want something to last longer you pay more or you make it yourself. The cost of a custom knife is worth it to those who need its worth, I myself won't buy one as it's not worth it to me. But I do plan on making my own
***** I understand that, I myself only carry 12 to 30 dollar pocket knives but plan on getting something a 170 dollar pocket knife for it's strength, steel, and lifelong warranty
As its described as a cheap camping axe I thought the obvious job of the notch would be for tent pegs, as when we go camping over here we do take tent pegs but we tend not to take a bag of nails, but if you do things differently over there then that's great , keep on pulling those nails it will keep you out of mischief 😂......happy days
I have been wanting a wide belt sander for knife and axe sharpening - then I saw you using the hand belt sander in a vise and saved me having to buy one. Thanks!
Anyone who watches cartoons know that the best way to test sharpness is to pull out one your hairs and drop it gently over the blade. If it splits the hair, then it's sharp enough.
I just bought my second axe, and the research for that actually got me started on this channel. My first axe was cheaper than the one up here: A "sports axe" I foundd second hand, a small hatchet with only 500 grams (less than a pound) of iron, drop forged and with a laquered, wooden handle. The experience with that I made me realize, why do people buy so many small woodsmans axes for camping out in the woods? Perhaps in other areas they have to fell trees when they need firewood, but we have so many fallen trees in our area I'd probably have to walk over them to find any dead standing ones. My next axe was going to be a splitting axe. I bought a swedish Hultsfors, at 900 grams. And really want to get out and test it now, as I've seen far too little of it on UA-cam.
"Some rubbers are better than stopping it than others.. I'll be interested to see how that feels. Of course wood being our standard, which makes for a very good dampener." Sounds dirty😂
Wondering the same thing, though I think he did a video a few months ago with the Russian sharpener. As I recall, he clamped the axe to the bench and used the sharpener in that manner. I do know that the Russian sharpener can't give a convex edge, only a flat one.
Could u put a link in next vid on where u got those lightweight, low profile invisible seemingly nonexistent safety glasses u used while using a power tool that spits out shards of metal, and sparks at high speeds?
I've been very impressed with the 3/8 drive HF ratchet I have. It's the one with two joints in the handle so it can get in tight spaces. I actually prefer it to my Craftsman ratchet and there hasn't been a single problem with it. It's well worth the money and the handle works nicely, it's also a little longer than the Craftsman so I get more leverage on it.www.harborfreight.com/3-8-eighth-inch-heavy-duty-flexible-ratchet-96369.html
I have one of these hatchets i bought at Walmart 8-10 years ago and i found the nail puller to be great for pulling tent stakes out, way easier to pull frozen stakes out of the ground. All in all this hatchet is worth the money when used for a camp hatchet. Great video!
Here in London we have very little requirement for a hand axe, in fact if you are seen with one you will get a visit from a van load of angry bluebottles (rozzers) ((coppers)). Nevertheless very interesting and great presentation. Subscribed.
saltywok You are spot on. I've used a machete every year to hack chaparrel. It's Brazilian-made and came with a very dull , thick edge. I finally put a fine, sharp edge on it and it finally became a useful tool.
Sharpen the edge, no special trick to it. Using a belt sander like in this video would probably be the best way but there are plenty of other options. On a $10 machete I wouldn't get too crazy, just put a sharp edge on it.
jamie mead get two 1 x 3 boards about 10" long. staple some course emmery cloth to one side and medium on the other. on the second board staple a fine and extra fine. now you have 4 grits on a nice controllable base. clamp the machete in a vise and go to work. cheap quick way that gets the job done. PS. wrap the emmery around the edges and staple the edges..... obviously.

LOL!!!
I am just sitting here waiting for the safety experts to say something about this video lol.
Evan VandenLangenberg are you referring to the sanding? He should wear ppe.
He was wearing ppe, he had ear muffs on.
ringerson4x4 they won't protect his eyes
+Yes, Cody really should be wearing a bright orange life vest when he does these tests and a riggers harness. Shame on you Cody!
What is your woodcutting level?
Bao Pham 99

CrazyRussianHacker: "Safety Goggles, because safety is numbah one priority.
One Punch Saiyan wrong channel mate
Funny this is that I thought EXACTLY the same while watching this video!
I really don't understand why someone would do this without eye protection. He must have felt the sparks hitting his face. really stupid.
you really don't notice it, honestly.
Until you get a metal fragment lodged in your eyeball. Trust me, it aint fun.
I would have like to seen it used before you reprofiled it.
Robert Hewitt .
Go hit a round of wood with a butter knife, same effect.
$10 plus 20 minutes in the shop gives you halfway decent "emergency kit" hatchet. Seems reasonable.
You dont need 20 years of guarantee for a emergency hatchet. And 10$ for this? Seems good enough
Sorry, but I wish you were wearing eye protection while operating your power sander. I am restoring a dropped steel forged Fuller #16 hatchet/axe myself. It has similarities to the axe your purchased on Amazon, so your video caught my attention. Thank you for this post.
Amazon Hatchet...$10....Sharpening Lesson....Priceless. Thanks !! Great Video !!
I know how you love your Japanese pull saw, well how about doing a cheap version say from Harbor Freight Tools (10 In. Japanese Style Double-Edge Saw) under $10.00.
Like Snap-on vs Harbor Freight. Even the cheap tools do the job usually. Not the best but they will do what they say they can do. Great video. Thanks
I picked this hatchet up a while ago and worked the edge on it. Found it to be a pretty decent little. The vibration does suck though but it isn't something I find myself using all the time. It has found its home in my survival bug out bag.
Great in depth review! Used a couple of hatchets like that growing up and they held up incredibly well. Even when I used them as splitting wedges. 😂
How about the cheapest fixed blade knife on amazon?
American Nomad Outdoors so it has fantastic steel, great fit and finish and is custom
Six Gun James yes dude
The notch isn't for pulling nails, it's for pulling tent pegs
As its described as a cheap camping axe I thought the obvious job of the notch would be for tent pegs, as when we go camping over here we do take tent pegs but we tend not to take a bag of nails, but if you do things differently over there then that's great , keep on pulling those nails it will keep you out of mischief 😂......happy days
I think it bothered me more than it should that you weren't using eye protection while grinding
Maybe a new series? Cheap tools are they worth it... maybe even give them away after the video
Lizzie Borden Duty Cycle: 81 Whacks.
lol
That's dark. I like you.
Sure; you say you like it but do you give the comment a thumbs up? Noooo!
That's because I'm an awful human being. Huehuehue.
why didn't you test it at the start then do that?
ohh i get it so hes getting paid... THAT BI***
Joshua Roblox / Sub Of course he's getting paid, that's kinda why he does UA-cam, to get paid...
Joshua Roblox / Sub I can't take you seriously since you play ROBLOX.....
He said it would be unsafe to use if he didn't re-profile the edge
+Joshua Roblox / Sub Definitely not sponsored. He wouldn't be saying such negative things if it were. He straight up says the edge is just terrible.
I have been wanting a wide belt sander for knife and axe sharpening - then I saw you using the hand belt sander in a vise and saved me having to buy one. Thanks!
21:34 saw this in a meme comp. weird how cody made it into the memes.
Anyone who watches cartoons know that the best way to test sharpness is to pull out one your hairs and drop it gently over the blade. If it splits the hair, then it's sharp enough.
chain saw.
Because that is an inexpensive and practical tool for all the uses a small hatchet is good for.....
I meant to review the cheapest chainsaw on Amazon
Then you could change your profile pic to a chainsaw
500 grams is over a pound
"Some rubbers are better than stopping it than others.. I'll be interested to see how that feels. Of course wood being our standard, which makes for a very good dampener." Sounds dirty😂
Im dead
I had one of these 30 years ago, when I was a teen. It was ok, and lasted until the handle rusted out of the inside.
Great video ! I think the tinker's vice "jig" is a great idea. Cody, could you have sharpened the axe with the Russian sharpening system you have ???
Wondering the same thing, though I think he did a video a few months ago with the Russian sharpener. As I recall, he clamped the axe to the bench and used the sharpener in that manner. I do know that the Russian sharpener can't give a convex edge, only a flat one.
Andrew Delashaw Good point, You're right.
Could u put a link in next vid on where u got those lightweight, low profile invisible seemingly nonexistent safety glasses u used while using a power tool that spits out shards of metal, and sparks at high speeds?
I guess you'd say that sharpening segment was
*cutting edge technology*
I built my own hatchet out of a bike seat post and aluminum with a hacksaw and metal files........ 4 hour build
With a decent job you could have bought 10 of those budget hatchets instead.
Safety Glasses protect eyes brother, God Bless
Kenneth D. Hillstead He does stuff like that all the time on here. I don’t know how many times he needs to be called out for that.
I have all kinds of chips of wood that come back and hit me in the face. Hurts like a b**** but thankfully haven't had anything hit me in the eye.

I have an exam tomorrow why am i here
I don´t have an exam tomorrow. Why am I here?
an Axem!
Because u had an exam the next day
Henri du Plessis how's your exam? Passed?
he said the axe gave him cancer xD
Only in California.
Do a harbor freight ratchet review, or deadblow
We have Ave for that
I've been very impressed with the 3/8 drive HF ratchet I have.
“Well, keep it cool enough so that you can touch it”
Is Literally steaming
Here in London we have very little requirement for a hand axe, in fact if you are seen with one you will get a visit from a van load of angry bluebottles (rozzers) ((coppers)). Nevertheless very interesting and great presentation. Subscribed.
Martin D A that goes for all of Europe. Anyone who has a weapon is subject to government suspicion and scrutiny, besides terrorists of course
cheap machete I want to see how you sharpen it I bought one for 10 bucks and the edge was terrible show me how to save it! lol
jamie mead well heads up machetes wherent designed to be razzor sharp
Wrong, they 100% were designed to be kept razor sharp because of how light they are, they are very very ineffective if they are dull.
saltywok You are spot on.
PS. wrap the emmery around the edges and staple the edges..... obviously.
