I was chopping into some frozen oak and white pine with my new LH saddle axe, and it vastly out performs my GB hunters axe, though I love both. 8 inch dead oaks were done for in about 6 well placed swings. Plus, even after about 30 dead trees, both edges were not effected. I did about 4 strokes on a steel and I was back to shaving layers off slices of paper. Talk about a sharp axe! Definitely recommend getting one if you can. That octagonal handle is awesome in the hands.
A man who cuts his own wood is twice warmed is the original quote and it's a lot older than Hank. wink wink and it's a goodun, regardless of the author
Ah Ian, glad to know you're reading comments!!! Btw. We met in Tyler Tx. Keep up the great work. Also Alec is starting to use his new hammer. That thing is a beast. Friendly machine envy
IMO, when it comes to axes, cutting prowess is more about the type of edge profile (esp the thickness immediately BEHIND the edge), type of steel (edge retention and force transmission efficiency) and technique, than it is about the shape of the axe per se. However, I freely admit it's been 30+ years since I used one. Ya gotta match the type of edge profile you put on an axe to the type of steel it's made from AND the type and amount of cutting you plan to do with it, otherwise it either wont cut as well as it should, or it'll constantly be getting too dull too quickly.
Liam, i think you should make an axe for Skillcult, he would seriously do your axes justice with his skill level! it would be amazing to see just how well they perform
When the pioneers went into the wild it was unusual for them to have had a hewing axe that would have been some what of a luxury item so they absolutely would have used a standard poll axe to new if the situation called for it. and even in more civilized areas when having a dedicated hewing axe was possible the bulk of removal would still be done with a standard axe to conserve energy from having to swing an 8 or 12 pound axe for hours on end so that was a great demonstration of what your axes can do in a relatively short time frame especially in the hands of someone who doesn't do this all the time great video
Liam, you should come watch some colleges compete in the Mid Atlantic woodmens meet on March 30th in Waynesville, NC at the Haywood County Fairgrounds. All kinds of chopping and sawing events including a tree felling event like what you did in the video.
Should make some hewing axes, good fun ! The Muller Biber is a good one, as is the Gransfors Bruk, and I have heard the Autine hewing axe is the bomb. . In all fairness, the hemfir is a tough chop for any axe, much less a 2 1/4 pounder.. Keep up the most excellent work !
You should make a pair of broad axes for hewing and do a UA-cam giveaway for them. That would be some good videos of the making and you trying them out.
Good vid Liam. I was thinking you could have split up some wood for a fire to keep y'all warm while filming then cook some steaks on the fire. Yeah baby!
Very impressive.. never thought i see maybe beter axes than the Grantsfor Bruks axes... an if Wranglastar is very happy with the axe work uv done then safe to say very impressive products... will be following you up ....
It might be cool to see someone who is a real expert at wielding an axe use some of your axes like this and talk about it. Maybe demonstrate basic axe skills? And some things that are impressive to watch.
Nice axe. How much kilogram it weights. After seeing lots of vedios of blacksmiths like you, I developed an interest in learning this art of blacksmithing, I will learn it at any cost and will make my own tools especially axes, mauls and hatchets.
Love your Chanel have be watch you all the way back when you came out with your double bit Ax video! As well as forged and fire! I love your axes I like your farm ax! Was thinking I am sure you get all kinds of requests! But I think there is a huge market for the Jersey pattern American fell Ax 4 pound Weight! No body makes them any more I have 2 kelly work True Tepper flint edge! I love them but they are getting harder and harder to find! Just a thought great job brother!
With the new shop and upgraded tools and equipment are you getting you getting caught up on the backlog? And with the addition of more employees do you still touch every axe that is shipped out?
Bravo on the quality axes you produce and the personal craftsmanship that goes into each one, but I think you should lead by example when felling and wear a hardhat. I have seen plenty of dead hemlocks spit branches out of their crowns (or what's left of their crowns in the wake of the wooly adelgid). Lots of viewers will try to emulate your techniques and could get injured in the process. Be safe out there.
When are these going to be made available to order? I'm also interested in your trappers hatchet. You have moved to a larger place, invested in more and better equipment, when will the order books reopen?
Liam, I've been trying to buy one of your axes. What's up? And you don't respond to emails. I had to buy a GBA Small Forest in the interim. I NEED four axes as gifts. Tell me how I can accomplish this bro!
Ben Scott is doing a pretty good series of videos on axemanship. He's administering the cordwood challenge now, taken over from Steven Edholm (Skillcult) who also has good videos on the same topic.
All I kept thinking was, oh, shit, my back would be smoked with a short handle like that -- LH is a bit taller than me I'm sure, so you are looking pretty hunched over.
For the low low price of $29.95 per month you too can join the Liam Hoffman Fitness Club. I promise you after one year you will lower Cholesterol, drop body fat, and be in the best physical condition you've ever been in. And you will be helping the environment by removing dead trees so the new growth has room.
But does it cut pizza? In slow motion? In a cinematic sequence?
...these are the questions that keep me up at night Liam!
Do more videos like these. It was nice to see your Axes in action. Show us around your town. That would be awesome. Thank you for another great video.
Props to Jacob and his excellent camera work....always the best !
Sounds amazing. The sound of the axe hitting the wood and the tree falling.
I was just watching buckin billy rays video of him unboxing the axe he got

Woah woah woah Jacob with that tree transition
Nice video of you demonstrating your axes! Been following since your Forged in Fire win! Thanks for sharing!
Those axes are really good
Henry Ford said “If you cut your own firewood, it’ll warm you twice.” I think he said that. He at least had it engraved on a mantle in his house.

3 times cut, hall, burn.

You are amazing Blacksmith. And cannot wait to order one someday.
Now that’s how you start a video!
I enjoyed your video, lovely way to spend time in a nice environment
I love axes.
Greetings from Gloucester Uk
So next video You'll be making hewing axe?
It's been a while since you made this vid but I really enjoyed that. You guys crack me up. Thanks.

That's one of the best chip shots I've ever seen!

Great to see your tools put to use. They cut beautifully!! Love this video.

Man, that 24 inch is so perfect it hurts. I would do anything for one of these. I'm going to sleep until the pre order list is open again...
You are definitely a lumberjack now Liam

Some people can get serious about anything... Do you live every day of your life fearing that the people around you could die any minute?
Do it again....with the farm axe!

You make a darn good axe.
Longer handle and an eight pound axe you will be proud trusts me . fun video let the chips fly

Im considering buying one of your axes.... which one of ur axes comprable to Gransfor Small Forest Axe ?
Those were some pretty impressive chips, Liam.
Looks like now you're going to have to make an offset hewing axe.
With the new shop and upgraded tools and equipment are you getting you getting caught up on the backlog? And with the addition of more employees do you still touch every axe that is shipped out?
(john foreman hand hewing ) could i see you make an offset hewing axe and a scoring axe mr Hoffman ?
Liam we come to Banner Elk every year for the Wooly Worm festival. Have you ever been?
That 24 inch is rediculous man when you were knocking the chips between the notches. I had a big old shit eating grin. I want one
Hickory does make good handles, but you should try white oak, it does a lot better. Great axes though!
Haha the little ehh at the end was funny

I would love to buy one of your axes. But I can't afford it now. I love the 24 inch handles. They seem to be hard to find around here.

How do I contact Hoffman black smithing for a 2 n1 quarter lb 24 inch axe sent to England bet it's costly beautiful axe though
Does this mean you will be opening up the pre-order books again soon?

now cut it into 16inch blocks.
