I found few mistakes in the video, want you to clarify one potential mistake: why the canaries on the map in the video don't have the ocean territories belong them, just Portuguese islands?
@@volgshtein Good Question... If i had to guess, since i cant quite seem to fully understand your question, it is because portugal is divided into several methods of division, being the least defined NUTS I and the most NUTS III. In the NUTS I, there is only 3 portuguese divisions: Continental Portugal, RAA(Região Autonoma dos Açores, Autonomous Region Of the Azores, AKA Islands in the middle of the northern atlantic ocean, amazing place), and the RAM(Região Autónoma da Madeira, Autonomous Region of the Madeira Islands, AKA Islands next to the Spanish Canary islands and birthplace of Cristiano Ronaldo). Since the Madeira Islands are a Huge part of the portuguese territory in what comes to a possible expansion, its clear the maps representing the Already-in-usage territory expansion would wish to detail the fact that portugal owns territory in the african continent, expanding their water borders by a huge landslide! Does this awnser your question?
@@fatkrab7556 thank you. I'm trying to say that on the maps in this video you can see all ocean territories around Portuguese islands are belong to Portugal, but i guess that the same should be for the Spanish islands and for territories of other countries with access to the sea, like Morocco. So this is not shown on this maps and I don't know how is the real division on the water works.
By making that possible, that would require a lot of work and nobody would want to expand the country double its size for what and talk about the rising sea level that's not possible.
its very hard to do that kind of infrastructure in portugal. the north sea is 20m deep on average, and the estuaries in the netherlands dont get much deeper than that. in portugal, the coast starts rigt at the depth 80m in the end of the tagus and 500 m just a few kilometers of the coast. this helps the upwelling and that's one reason why the portuguese beaches are extremely cold. in the canon of nazaré it can get to 2000 m even closer to the coast. even the duch cant polder this far... i mean... lets not give them ideas.....
@Alex ' Portugal's teams are very respectable and well-known in European competitions, such as the UEFA Champions League. Saying that only their national football team gives them recognition in the football world is pretty ignorant and disrespectful.
Back when I was a student at university in the early 1980s, I took a legend and myth history course. One of the lectures involved her discussing Portugal's roll in the great age of discovery. The following class, the professor had mentioned that after the previous lecture, many students had come up to her to discuss what they had just learned. They were all astounded at the magnitude of Portugal's role in discovering the new world. As a result, the professor dedicated that day's lecture strictly to the influence of Portugal during those centuries of great exploration. Being of Portuguese background, I felt so proud that these students were finally understanding just how important role Portugal played in the centuries coming out of medieval Europe. Yes, Portugal kick started one of the most important periods in world history. Portugal is the sea.

Just a correction: when Portugal was ruled from Rio, Brazil wasn't a colony anymore, it was part of the Kingdom, so Portugal wasn't ruled from its colony. It was called the United Kingdom of Portugal and Brazil. I think it's impossible to be ruled from a colony since if the royal family settles there it automatically becomes part of the country.
Actually, it was called the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves. Because the official name of Portugal was Kingdom of Portugal and Algarves, so when Brazil became part of the kingdom, they had to change the name
I don't think most people would mind the extension of their EEG. Actually 2-3 decades ago they had found a large reserve of oil fields a few miles from the mainland coast. They held a referendum and the majority of people (like over 80% if I remember correctly), voted not to drill oil. The reason is that it would probably affect their coastline and tourism, a major part of Portugese economy. So yeah, they have a lot of resources in the sea but aren't using them to attain their countries beauty, and if you've ever visited Portugal it has a beautiful coast.
Yet the money that this EEG would assembly line in, would give Portugal the necessary funds to keep its prestine coastline prestine. Using the money revenue, and may even lead to another technology that environmentalists would love, liek clean coal, clean ocean gas. Could you imagine how many places around the world could benefit from something like this? Far reaching potential, that we would deny ourselves? Is just sad.
@@ericjohnson7234 Studies were done at the time. Portugal was hardly going to profit from the exploration due to the agreements that were in place with the oil drilling companies.

The decision not to explore oil in Portuguese territory was probably one of the best decisions of the last 60 years in Portugal and the Portuguese who think otherwise are very stupid. The Portuguese state would only receive +- 45 thousand euros/month for all occupied land areas and 575 thousand euros/month for maritime areas. and royalties (value paid per barrel) 0.1% to 5% per barrel in maritime explorations and between 3% to 8% in land explorations depending on the production volume. To make matters even worse, all oil and gas discovered would belong entirely to the concessionaire with no obligation to stay in the country.

The story about deciding to "seize power" was written from the first moment the royal family left Brazilian lands.
My country Ecuador is trying to do the same. Chinese ships have been patrolling and fishing just outside our Galápagos islands. As someone who's speak Portuguese, in 2:13 it is written "Portugal e Mar!" which strangely translated to "Portugal is the Sea!". The problem is "Portugal e Mar" actually translates to Portugal AND the Sea, to get the translation to "Portugal is the Sea" it should be like: "Portugal É Mar" or "Portugal É o Mar". This E and É makes an enormous difference meanings in Portuguese language. É: Means affirmation: Portugal É (o) mar - Portugal is the Sea (which would be correct). I wonder how the transition into "modern times" of the French colonial empire compare to Portugal's. I have the impression Britain just gave up on it, knowing it was a lost battle, so it created the Common Wealth instead. Portugal was arguably on the other side of it: inflexible, lost it all. But France seems to have maintenained a lot of its old empire worldwide, using a similar strategy to the Portuguese: making those territories (somewhat) integral to the "European France".
Exactly. I'm from Ireland which used to be a part of the British empire. All that remains here is Northern Ireland which will likely unify with the rest of Ireland in the near future. Britain, more specifically England, has rendered itself to being a small, nationalistic, small-minded and increasingly isolated nation. It's quite embarrassing and sad to see how much they've fucked themselves up with Brexit. Very few countries want to trade with them as they're seen as unstable and untrustworthy. That's how many former colonial powers end up. One needs only to look at Russia...
the country that begun integrating the overseas lands into the territory into equal terms was Spain, and if not the anglosaxon influence in the elites, and the napoleon invasion, very probably Spain would have stayed a unified nation, maybe divided in 3-4 pieces maximum(with american territories as main powers and spain as a side province) Still today you can see how succesfull that interrupted model was mixing and bringing to the world a new kind of people: the hispanoamericans. (no matter how badly the history has treated them). France and Portugal arrived a bit late, and coulndt get it. this model is known as the "roman empire model" a generator empire, in oposition to the british empire that was a predator model only.(only where they could exterminate the natives, they would generate).

8:23 this is kinda interesting. Portugal is a part of NATO, and Portugal considered Goa as their own territory(not a colony), so when India invaded Goa, it was literally invading Portugal, and thus that was an attack on all of the nato countries. Portugal and Nato actually issued warnings to India but India invaded anyways making India probably the only country ever actually waging war against nato and defeating them.
Actually that is false. Indeed India was warned to not do it, but Portugal never got assistance and was told from the start that NATO would not stand on it's side. By that time Portugal was already on the verge of the so called "Proudly Alone" policy. As the video itself showed, the USA (a NATO member), helped the rebels in every colony, effectively proving you wrong. India never waged or won a war against NATO, it won against Portugal which was "Proudly Alone".
The NATO charter specified what territory is covered and it excludes non-Euro and North American parts of any NATO members (this is roughly, but not the exact deal). This is why the UK was pretty much on its own in the Falklands War.
I wouldn't say taking advantage of an international geographical treaty is "insane". But as a Portuguese, I approve of the long historical summary. Well done.

EEZ is not a "territory". It's just a region of the sea where a country has exclusive economic control (meaning other countries could not plant, mine, or harvest resources from that area without consent). Also uninhabited islands that cannot support human habitation or shoals with non-existent economic activities could not project an exclusive economic zone.
That's why you pay a handful of people to live in houses outside of a tiny military installment on every rock you claim, because now it's a populated island with economic activity.
Madeira and the Azores archipelagos make up a population of half a million and they are autonomous regions. They have their own govermnent that might be why they have an EEZ.
Well, depending on your idea of what a territory is, an area under direct control not allowing others to step in is territory none the less. For as long as a few hundred people live on an island and produce some economic activity, the island can have an EEZ, but as you said, if no one lives there, then there is no economic production, thus, no EEZ. I believe a minimum population must be set internationally so that an island can be considered to have EEZ. Greece and Turkey go back and forth with this. Because Greece extended the EEZ to 12 nautical miles within the Ionian sea, nor Italy, nor Albania nor Turkey can enter without asking for access first. In practice, this is what territory means.
@@emiliospowerballer1441 I don't think there is a confusion between the definition of "territory" and "EEZ" . As far as UNCLOS is concern, EEZ is well defined among it's signatories, and EEZ is not the same as a Sovereign territory. Countries cannot arbitrarily redefine EEZ and interchange it with "sovereign" territory whenever they think it is convenient. That's not how this thing works Unlike Soverign territories, EEZ doesn't invalidate freedom of navigation. So an opposing country could park their entire Navy on your EEZ and as long as they are not harvesting any "resources" they are free to be there. Also EEZ is only binding with UNCLOS signatory countries. US for example doesn't recognize other any other countries EEZ as they are not signatories of UNCLOS. (though US had establish their own exclusive economic zone for themselves). And as far as they are concern, EEZ are part of international waters and nobody owns any of it. Another problem is that UNCLOS has no enforcing ability whatsoever EEZ is a toothless law, unless you are like China or US or some country with potent naval force.

Portugal also has plans to become Europe's space port, having more sea aligns with this goal. Portugal is geographically well placed for a space port, but it needs the support of the ESA obviously.
@@stalinumonwotblitz7743 Other than a major tragedy a few decades ago, what's going on there today that's still relevant to space exploration? Genuine question. @L C ESA has Kourou, not France. France owns the land. The rocket parts are made in France, Germany, the UK, Italy, Switzerland and others. Also, Santa Maria island is much closer to mainland Europe, and its location means it can launch spacecraft to a wide variety of orbital trajectories. Also, ESA has a tracking station there. Thank you for referring the colonial war. Too many people outise of Portugal don't know about this. My father was one those lost generation that was sent for a meaningless war. He was shot in the head and miraculously survived a few days in the morgue without water, food or treatment. He was operated and able to live a proper life, but worse than his wounds were his nightmares of surviving in the jungle and the people he had to kill!
My dad was caught on the other side as a kid. My family came to Portugal in the last plane the Portuguese government provided for "returnados" from Angola. No one trully won that war
My grandad was saved by his friend that sacrificed himself by jumping to a grenade to protect him while they were moving around in the field i think it was in Mozambique + my uncle grandad ( i think this is how you say it but its tio avô that i meant) was in jail in India for beeing a portuguese soldier fighting for the colonies fortunately he got out and both of them are doing well :D
My father didn't want to fight in Angola and evaded the military (desertou) but as he was going often to eat at the camp by jumping the wall he was caught one year later and put in prison in Angola for 5 years till the independence. Still had time during that year to make babies with a woman from MPLA who wanted him to fight with her but he declined too and abandoned them.
"meaningless war" ... defender a integridade territorial de Portugal foi ou é sem sentido? Pergunte aos Ucranianos neste mesmo momento, se eles querem perder o país para os russos. Tenho pena que o 25 de abril tenho deitado fora um império, onde milhares de Portugueses morreram para o criar e para deixar para as proximas gerações. Eu teria lutado! O seu pai, fez o seu dever, e muito bem!
EEZ's are not sovereign territory. They're international waters that a state has exclusive economic rights over (that's what EEZ means - exclusive economic zone). Sovereignty ends 12 nautical miles from habitable land. The 200nm EEZ radius does not count as 'territory '
It's still considered by the UN as a form of territorry. And tbh, a much more important one, since there isn't any real distiction between sovereign waters and EEZs other than the ability to bar passage, which is irrelevant given that a navy powerful enough to exploit these waters can probably also defend them.
Finally a reasonable comment. The video is pretty misleading in treating EEZ as part of the countries territory. The EEZ is literally region beyond the territorial waters where the country has some rights but not full sovereignty.
As a Spaniard, fuck yeah Portugal, show them who is the boss. Seeing the map with the gigantic Portuguese EEZ is beautiful. Even though I'm not Portuguese, I'm really proud of them. Portugal Caralho!
HAHA! Literally 15min of how horrible a country Portugal was and how hard they fought to keep enslaving people of other nations around the world. and all you get from that is "fuck yeah Portugal, show them who is the boss"
I'm Portuguese so you might call me biased but I find it mind boggling the amount of energy the EU spends with fishing rights in UK waters but lets something much greater and presumably easier to accomplish go unnoticed. And with a Portuguese UN secretary general, the very same guy who started the process when he was PM in Portugal. The process is getting bogged down by having the US, Russia and other countries trying to question/poke holes in the scientific data to support the claim, not that there is anything wrong with it but that they always want more data, each time requiring months of data gathering. If it was signaled by the EU this is a political interest of the Union, pretty sure it would move along much quicker
@@fgsaramago Thx for the elaboration ^^ I think it's fine they're spending energy on the fishing situation, but they should do the same for Portugals plan. The EU has a lot of muscle behind it, but it's "leaders" act like a bunch of toothless hippies on the world stage compared to Russia, the US and China. What's the point in gathering all that power in one organisation if they're not gonna use it in the interest of its citizens?
@Geogir Shkelstine diversity quotas ? What are you a pansy ? You know what’s funny they’re gonna do it , and still not pay for what they did and will never accept people on those islands . Or keep it closed and go what you think you can to change the situation.
The heck are you two above me talking about? Portugal is paying "plenty quotas" by taking in refugees, having plenty immigrants from their once colonies as well as some others european countries and even other places like Nepal and India. If anything the numbers will stabilize even more because the "white population" is dying of old age, no..? Even if we are talking about "facing the colonial past", I do frankly know some people that may unironically say some overly nationalist crap and treat songs like "Angola é Nossa" as if it is some truth rather than history but I know there were expositions made on this topic, with some minor "museums" opening up to bring awareness to that, so it could have been worse. Plus I seriously doubt someone from any ethnicity would get harrassed in Portugal, even in the islands... I just can't imagine it happening, maybe I'm just too innocent, who knows? But... Really, unthinkable.
Just like the eu should support Greece and Cyprus with their implementation of the unclos agreement and stand by them protecting the EU’s EEZ against Turkish ambitions?
one reason Portugal became a superpower it its time because it was the first Nation to perfect global navigation, insofar that Portuguese kings and merchants could put troops and capital anywhere on the map, preciously, without any guesswork whatsoever
It's so simple, once you realize it. That the answer to "how far north/south am I?" is "well, how high is the North Star?" Once you know that, and you know what's at that latitude on both coasts, presto!
For many years Portugal due to its position in the map owns a larger part of the Atlantic Ocean then many other countries. I learned that in school when the Net was non existent.

Really good video. As a Portuguese myself, it is so great to be "noticed" by such a large channel. By the way, some curiosities to add to the Portuguese colonial decay: - The first sign that something was about to happen was actually in 1580, when the Iberian Union began. Portugal, being an autonomous part of Spain, kept its colonies, but that title was degrading as the Spanish kings went with planning the complete annexation. Fortunately, Portugal regained its independence in 1640. - The British Ultimatum in 1890 was really tough. For both parts! Let's recall that they still have the oldest alliance in the world, so, for the British, that sort of felt like betraying. But the United Kingdom went on with it due to the railroad they wanted to build. Portugal's decision to accept the ultimatum was influenced a lot because of the 648 year-long alliance.
"being an autonomous part of Spain" Nope. We were under the same crown as the Spanish Kingdoms. One guy who ruled many places, but we were not part of Spain. We never lost our independence. We lost our sovereignty.

One point. Goa is not a city, but rather a small state made of many separate small towns and villages.
The decision not to explore oil in Portuguese territory was probably one of the best decisions of the last 60 years in Portugal and the Portuguese who think otherwise are very stupid.

Yes, i also believe that all types of islands cannot project extended continental shelf (ECS) to 350 miles, it's exlusive to continents not islands
@@emiliospowerballer1441
I don't think there is a confusion between the definition of "territory" and "EEZ"
.
As far as UNCLOS is concern, EEZ is well defined among it's signatories, and EEZ is not the same as a Sovereign territory.
Countries cannot arbitrarily redefine EEZ and interchange it with "sovereign" territory whenever they think it is convenient.
That's not how this thing works
Unlike Soverign territories, EEZ doesn't invalidate freedom of navigation.
Another problem is that UNCLOS has no enforcing ability whatsoever
EEZ is a toothless law, unless you are like China or US or some country with potent naval force.

Portugal also has plans to become Europe's space port, having more sea aligns with this goal. Portugal is geographically well placed for a space port, but it needs the support of the ESA obviously.
its funny to think that the actual most important space port today is brazil the previous colony of portugal
@@stalinumonwotblitz7743 Other than a major tragedy a few decades ago, what's going on there today that's still relevant to space exploration? Genuine question.
Also, Brazil was considered Portuguese territory on its own right, on par with the European lands, unlike the African and Indo/Asian colonies.
Without it, launches from Kourou can't be tracked for much of the Atlantic ocean path they usually take.
Not really thought. French Guiana is ESAs main spaceport. Equatoral zones are ideal for rocket launches.
@@jamesdinius7769 that's is correct. Yet the US, Russia and China still left Europe far behind when it comes to launch cadence,, even without any equatorial region (anything between both tropics) launch complexes.

Quick correction - at some points in the video you've referred to Goa as a city which is false. While a very small state, Goa is not a singular city
He used city as a short term for city-state
i love Goa, my dream is to restore one of all the old abandoned portuguese villas in north goa.
Yes, but for a long period of time as a colony, Goa didn't have the borders it has that and it was much smaller. At least the initial Goa was a city. And many travellers' accounts refer to it at a city.
@@gazpachopolice7211 What was Panjim/Panaji back then? Was it still the goan capital or did it not have one? I can't find much about goa history online..
@@datadavis yes unfortunately the articles on Goa on Wikipedia are a bit mixed up. Apparently Panaji/Panjim as a capital is relatively new, not more than 2 centuries old. The older capital is reffered to as Old Goa. Basically that is the most "touristy"part of Goa with the most churches and the governor's palace. That itself was a replacement of the pre Muslim city of Gomantaka.

I'm so sorry for reading this. Hope your father had some love and support after that and that his trauma didn't pass to the next generation.

I think I will call this one the most disappointing video I've ever seen on youtube.
Having something and being able to keep it are two different things..

Go Portugal! The EU should make themselves useful for once and do whatever the hell needed to help them with this. Greetings from Belgium
They will be killed on them … maybe diversity has chance on the continent but not on the islands. Madeira and Azores will never allow what you are speaking about . Close your mouth and sit down .
Where the rest of the world see a liquid desert, the Portuguese see a vast flatland of opportunities.

Really good video. As a Portuguese myself, it is so great to be "noticed" by such a large channel. By the way, some curiosities to add to the Portuguese colonial decay:
- The first sign that something was about to happen was actually in 1580, when the Iberian Union began.
@@GumSkyloard Yeah, that's true, I just didn't want to put much detail into that. At least D. Filipe II/III and D. Filipe III/IV did want to do that, and were about to do it. God bless D. João IV!
