i born and live in java, i don't have any problem with this capital city relocating, all i wish is the developer will be much much much more concern about environmental issues, Kalimantan is too precious for us, not only for Indonesia but for the earth and the entire population, Kalimantan is blessed with a beautiful rain forest and the diversity in it, i just hope human greediness doesn't destroy it's true wealth just like we destroy java island, mega city with it's skyscraper is nothing compared to Kalimantan's priceless nature.

There is simply no other way it will happen. The new capital will destroy the rainforest around it, then they will destroy further tracts for palm oil, then they will build many high ways to speed up the destruction. The very project is a catastrophe, and it is impossible for it to be any other way. All hail money! Unfortunately, the ecological consciousness of most Indonesians is nill. Look at the comment section - mostly support, "oh the economy" and no thought of nature.

Since i'm from West borneo myself. I can assure you that Borneo is like a wet dream for tropical city designer because most tropical islands are small and dangerous due to volcanic activities and earthquake, Borneo never had any of that (i live here for 20 years and never in my life have i experienced an earthquake). However, enviromental problem caused by palm oil industry can already be seen across the island. So here's hoping that moving a huge administration center like *The state capital* would see more regulations actually being enforced more effectively.

    Another fun facts is:
Indonesian Government since Independence (1945) already moved the capital city 5 times in 5 years due to political and military instability:
    Jakarta (1945-1946)
    Yogyakarta (1946-1948)
    Bukittinggi (1948-1949)
    Yogyakarta (1949-1950)
    Jakarta (1950-...)
So, If the government declare the capital city is Nusantara by 2024 ,then Indonesia government already moved its capital city 6 times. I believe that is the world record for this achievement 😁

An interesting take i heard on this was that this is also a geopolitical move, by moving the capital to east kalimantan, Indonesia opens up an eastern corridor that will be able to take away influence from the straits of Malacca. This is in line with the history of the empires in Java and the influence the straits of Malacca they are subjected to. By creating this eastern corridor they allow for trade from north asia to flow downwards to Taiwan, the Philippines, and finally through eastern Indonesia thereby decreasing the dependence of Indonesia in the straits.

What is more important - the "development" (I hate this buzzword) of a single nation for its own sake, mostly meaning more money for the already filthy riches, OR the last large tract of primary rainforest in Sundaland that has the intrinsic value for the whole humanity? When all is said and done, Indonesians as a nation don't value their natural treasures and the immense biodiversity very much, if at all. It's like nature is only seen via its economic value. Rainforests = "undeveloped barren land" etc. Stories of what stopped the destruction on Siberut and of recent provincial vs central governments' disagreements in Papua are very telling of the mentality.

Balikpapan and Samarinda, the cities that are bordering this capital are also two largest cities in the entire island of borneo

As a person from Myanmar, the best reason we think the military moved the capital is because of their need for safety in an environment when they were increasingly unpopular. They wanted to be safe and they've even built multiple safeguards into Naypyidaw's design such as the 20-30 lane highways which double as landing strips for military planes in case of an emergency. The military has done what it wanted with selfish and little thought like change the country's name, cancel currency that was not a multiple of the dictator's lucky number etc. So it's safe to say climate change concerns would have been insignificant or even negligible in their thought process

I myself did working in the goverment handling this particular case (i did work in ministry of works as a consultant) and the video is actually pretty much accurate in terms how reasons why we need to move out capital. If i may, i want to add much of information as well as aggregated opinion (both by government and its people) regarding this issue
    1. True that Jakarta sinking fast due to heavy usage of ground water, so much so that recently there are issues of limiting ground water usage in several districts inside Jakarta, while also making retension well to increase water absorbtion into ground. It is already discussed between goverment and local representative council (DPRD) to pass this plan into a law to be enforced.
    2. As for new capital itself, it is still have issues. While yes Kalimantan (Borneo) has advantage of being earthquake "free" and less potency of geological disaster, it is by no means still pretty much affected in terms in ecological threat such as flooding (although it won't be severe as Jakarta) and smog. Now i highlighted about smog because this problem is, by any means, will haunt new capital as well. You see, when you say Borneo is a lush rain forest, that is not true either, since there now more and more jungles were cut open to make palm oil plantation (and yes, Borneo provide pretty much most of world, if not Indonesian, production of palm oil) as well as opening new coal mines. and these often make bush fire shows up. While yes not much fatalities, it still threatens much of jungles itself, and providing dangerous smog that can threat Borneo in general (and the capital in particular). Borneo itself did engulfed in such smog that not only affected some of its cities inside the island, it also impacted western part of Indonesia, heck even Singapore and Malaysia as well
    3. Many concerning that the new capital will be an empty husk just like Naypyidaw, instead of like Brazilia or Abuja. Well i have to say that it kinda not true but it actually is. See, indeed since most of Indonesian population heavily concentrated on Java, the island, especially Jakarta, became a centre in economics in our country. So much so that all of headquarters of national company lies in Jakarta pr its satelite cities. Not to mention there is a kind of sentiment that sums up an old belief between indonesian society
    "It's better work near homeland"
It means that you just want to work near your birthplace, or your homeland or sort. Not many Indonesians are eager to move outside their homeland (and if they do, most won't come back either). These means relocation such people to new capital, in and itself, is a major task. While yes, civil servants as well as armed force can be "mandated" to live there together with their families, same thing won't be easy to ask an enterprise or national compamy to move their headquarters there except if there are compensation or sort.
    4. And finally, the most pain in the ass of all, politics. See, there is still a dividing opinion whether the capital shpuld be moved at all. While yes the Jakartans many agree, still there are some who disagree just because the politics (put it simply, Jokowi was like Indonesian version of Biden. Quite a lot hate his government) and the oppositions are mostly egomaniacs (although again, governmental supporters are also egomaniacs so, not much difference) and this pretty much affected how on policy be made. See, while indeed there is thorough research for the choice of site for new capital. There is also someone who taking this as an advantage for personal business (and yes. Some of politicians in ministerial and representative level do have a palm oil plantation or coal mines) that quite disturbing. Although again, we can't much say about this since politics in Indonesia itself (if not global) are a complex one
Therefore i can say that i might be pessimistic about the plan, but i do hope at least people realize that this thing are actually necessary.

I agree with the fact in this video, Indonesia really has to move its capital city considering that the island of Java is already very densely populated. The discourse of moving the capital city of Jakarta has also existed since Indonesia was still colonized by the Dutch, precisely during the reign of Governor Herman Willem Daendels. Many factors caused Indonesia to have to move its capital city, in addition to the overpopulation factor on the island of Java, geographical factors were also the main reason why Indonesia had to move its capital city because of the very low landmass of the island of Java and it was predicted that in the future the island of Java would sink because its geological factors were already damaged. Population distribution must be carried out evenly, considering that the island of Kalimantan is still empty of residents, although Kalimantan's natural resources are very high but underutilized due to a lack of human resources, this can be a reference for Indonesia to move the capital city.

As an Indonesian from Jakarta, I have to say that the problem of congestion is very true. I use to go to a school in a town called BSD, which is about 30 minutes by highway from South Jakarta where I live, but it shares one of the most important highways around Jakarta. The traffic on this highway was so bad one day that a trip that would only take 30 minutes on a good day, took me *4 whole hours* and an average of 1 and a half hour ish on a normal day.

    • @Nukepositive
      @Nukepositive 2 роки тому +15

The traffic is bad, but the main problem is our policy on transportation more than population density. Everyone here (I'm also in JakSel) takes cars or motorbikes. The sidewalks are unsafe if they even exist, and a pedal bike is too dangerous. I love the BRT and train network, but there's just not enough routes. Transfers are sometimes a pain: the overhead walks at Semanggi and Kuningan take a while; Kebayoran has a train and a bus a few hundred meters apart, but there's no safe passage between; BRT exists on the inner ring, but not TB Simatupang, so a trip from Pasar Minggu to Kebon Jeruk that takes a car 30 minutes and almost no turns must be done in two hours and three transfers by transit.

During the Spanish empire when Spain first got the EQ. island of Bioko plus other small islands and part of the mainland coast, EQ. was administered from Bueno Aires Argentina. Spain took over administration once Argentina declared Independence. Spain use to administer the islands and mainland separately. Both have different ethnic groups. Spain in time united both and then gave them independence after being pressured by the UN. That time they did not know there were huge reserves of oil off waters of the main island of Bioko. So economically that island is important. But this oil wealth has caused Bioko original ethnic group to be overwhelmed by the ethnic groups coming from the more populated mainland. This explains why some want independence for there island. When it comes to oil on the mainland, it seems it still needs to be discovered.

thank you, useful explanation about the facts of Indonesia, especially in the capital city of Jakarta. I am amazed by how detailed your research was in making this video.
The matter of moving the capital city of Indonesia from Jakarta to Kalimantan is indeed the right effort. As a resident of Jakarta, I often experience common problems in this capital city. Traffic problems, environment, population, health, education, etc.
However, relocating the nation's capital to the island of Borneo, which contains large amounts of combustible peatlands, increases the risk of forest fires and has a significant negative impact on the environment. In addition, moving the capital city does not guarantee that environmental problems in Jakarta will be resolved.

At first the design was released and contested, I was optimistic about what the new capital would be: modern and smart city, good public transportation and smart infrastructure rather than some private-made cities (i.e. BSD, Alam Sutera, PIK, Meikarta) which are a car-centric cities. But then the study from the government released and it was viral on Twitter, shows how unprepared the government to move the capital and plenty of 'fabricated' reasons, mostly talking about social and ideologic reason, which rather unscientific. The document itself does not explain the cost and benefit, risk from disaster and how it would affect the natural environment of Kalimantan.
I do not against this capital city movement. As I have read the document, I'm afraid it will not just move the capital, but also the problems.

Clarification point re: Canberra - the disagreements over its location actually happened in the late-1800s through to 1911/1912. The dispute was resolved before Federation (in 1901) - because it was written into the constitution - by deciding that the new capital would be located on land that was within New South Wales, but that until that new city was ready, Melbourne would be the temporary capital. The 1927 date is just when the official change of capital happened.

This is actually a good move for the Indonesian president to moved the capital in Borneo.
Not only geologically safe from volcanic activity since this island doesn't have any.
But also sit facing Sulawei, along other islands that could weakened any potential storms from taking too much damages in the area.
My only concern is the ecological system in the regions.
As we know, cities that are built in a nearby flourishing fauna and flora is always the caused for massive destruction and extinction of many species.
Borneo with sparse population have a large dense vegetation that is home to many animals included endangered species. Moving the capital with reckless pursuit will just end up decimating the ecosystem.

The issue is Indonesia as a developing country uses coal and has a serious problem with car centrism. A new capital will surely grow quickly so they should pre-plan some sort of metro system before they start building residences and look into non-coal power plants.

Additionally, we tended to live on a landed house rather than low rise appartment which make the population density of an area not justiable to have it's own stops in public transport. some thing interesting: borneo is the third largest island in the world and the main island on the Sunda Shelf. Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in the Southeast Asian archipelago, is not actually in Indonesia. It rises to 13,455 feet (4,101 metres) in the northeastern corner of the island, in the Malaysian state of Sabah. Otherwise, the island’s relief seldom exceeds an elevation of 5,600 feet (1,700 metres), and most of the island lies below 1,000 feet (300 metres). Structural trends are not as well-defined as on adjacent islands, although a broad mountain system (which includes Mount Kinabalu) runs roughly from northeast to southwest. Kalimantan, which constitutes about three-fourths of the island, consists mostly of undulating lowlands, with alluvial swamps near the coast and forest-covered mountains in the deep interior.

this is an amazing video, the presentation and facts really add to my insight. we can see that moving the capital is a common occurrence in many countries. the goal is of course to get a strategic place for the smooth running of the state. Kalimantan may indeed be very strategic if we look at the facts above, but keep in mind that by making Kalimantan the capital of the country, we will sacrifice the purity of nature, ethnicity and local culture, and the government must be able to maintain that local wisdom. Do not let the effort to make a strategic center of government just get rid of the beauty that already exists. It is also important to remember that forest fires in Kalimantan are rife, and the consequences are very wide in other parts of Indonesia. this is even very difficult to overcome, will the government be able to overcome this if Kalimantan becomes the capital of Indonesia?

One of the most useful video i’ve ever seen. Great explaination with awesome visualization.
Here is my thoughts about moving the capital city. As an indonesian myself, it’s been quiet interesting thinking about our government decided to moving the capital city from Jakarta (Java Island) to Nusantara (Borneo Island) which planned to be the new capital city of indonesia. But the planning to moving the capital city from Jakarta to Nusantara was kinda interesting desicion. The government wants to make Jakarta as a metropolitan city which why it’s going to become the economic center, and nusantara become the central government. Also the good thing we hope that this desicion is going to make significant change and more evenly. Borneo has such a great criteria as place to move the capital city of Indonesia. First, Borneo is the center island in indonesia, they think it represents about justice. Second, It doesn’t has that much active volcano and earthquack were rarely happen. Third, Borneo considered has low potential to social conflict happen. They also have open culture towards newcomers.
Aside from that, moving the capital city from Jakarta is a smart desicion to reduce the crowds of population. As far as i know, Jakarta been the most crowded city i’ve ever been.
But there is also bad consequence by moving the capital city. It can be risking forest fire and several significant environment impact.

As a former historical tour guide specialized in Jakarta City, i got some things to say.
Jakarta was and never was meant to be perfect for a country's capital city.
Even when Indonesia still under dutch rule, alot of dutch politicians considering to move the capital city Jakarta (then batavia) to somewhere else, especially after the 17th century and the massive malaria and water pollutions in the city. But rather move it to other place, the dutch decides just expands Batavia to the south and abbonden the old Batavia.
And after the independence, even our president back then considers to move the capital city.
When it comes to water and floodings problems, it have existed since the dutch control. And it was the dutch who mades the clean underground water pumping project. But sadly we just realised the problem with underground water pumping now... And it is called sinking ground.
Not a big fan on the current president nor i care, but its a good move to move our capital city. I mean lets be real.
