Fun fact: in the back of the euro banknotes you can see a drawn map of the European union, and in this draw, you can find French Guiana too in the down left corner, and along with the French Guiana the are drawn a bunch of island too, which I suppose are the other french overseas territories
Fun fact: France is also home to the world’s longest domestic flight, between Paris and Reunion, taking more than 10 hours and traveling a distance greater than 5,000 miles. Even funner fact: Despite the vast majority of the British Empire being let go in the 20th century, its actually France that has the greatest number of territorial remnants of her old Empire among all former European colonial/imperial powers. France is one of only two nations that exists across all hemispheres and has territory in every single ocean. The only other being the UK
It's kinda bad that the British gave up their territories and France did not... like think about it, the fucking BRITISH gave up territories but France did not. Sus AF
In the same way, in 1999 or 2000 (I have a doubt for the date) the island of Anjouan seceded from the Comoros and asked France to take them so that they become a part of France like Mayotte next to them, but France refused.
@@franckheraut8365 Mayote is still in France because each island of the Comoros voted separately for or against their independance. I'm a french from the Caribbean islands. This ability to vote in french elections created a scandal in 2007. We have 6 hours of time difference. So the new french president (Sarkozy) had been announced in the media but people were still voting in the overseas departments. It's like our vote never mattered. Since this incident, the overseas departments are allowed to vote 1 day before France and people can see the scores of the overseas even before the election begins in France.
@@yaltschuler That's because French people aren't perfectly fluent in English, so they just translate "un français" literally. The fact that "French" or "English" aren't nouns by themselves and have to be completed by "man" at the end is a confusing quirk of the English language.
Little France in India ! Today, Pondicherry still has a community of French people living in the city and French is also an official language. There are 6,500 French people registered in South India, and of these about 5,500 are in Pondicherry.
They also have the old knights hospatalier church in Jerusalem which is technically Frances territory. Sarkozy went a few years ago and I remember reading it on the news
Yup there was also a famous incident there. When president Jacques Chirac came to visit, Israeli soldiers entered the church for safety and Chirac refused to enter until foreign troops were leave in French soil, just crazy haha.
Something worth mentioning : Guadeloupe, Martinique, La Réunion, French Guiana and Mayotte are French overseas regions/departments (ruled by the president), while the other are French overseas collectivities (basically they are somewhat independant, can be governed by local monarchs), plus New Caledonia having it's own status. No matter which territory you're born in, you're automatically a French citizen. All these territories decided through voting to stay French. Je suis Français, et fier de l'être.
I live in Newfoundland. I'm so close to France that being fluent in French will pretty much guarantee you any customer service job you want because French citizens shop here often.
@@blanco7726 Yeah, but it's not as common to be bi/multilingual in Canada. Our language education sucks. I was "taught" French on a regular basis in school from ages 10-18 then voluntarily chose to take additional French classes in university. I am far from fluent.

So I live in Suriname and my friends and I literally swim to France Every summer as a tradition. We stop a few times to rest on some islands in the Marowijne river. all and all it's a 1hour swim. Also French Guyana also borders Suriname which is a former Dutch colony
The tone implying that this is modern colonialism is inappropriate. The citizens living in these areas can vote, have full rights like any other French citizen and they have often voted to remain a part of France (+ some were not inhabited before France or the original inhabitants unfortunately died). Respecting people's will is the furthest from colonization you can get.
Giving people the right to vote in the "main" country alone is already a complete negation of the idea of being a colony, it would take a real dipshit or a propaganda-filled Anglo-Saxon to not see that.

As a French from one of those islands, I love this video because they understand the concept of a stellar nation and that Metropolitan France isn't France anymore. As someone who grew up being told "but it's not really France" I lost patience. This were the video isn't really right tho... Each of the part of France mentioned in the video had a referendum were the population had to vote for either independence or being fully integrated in France. It started with the war of Algeria, France decided to put a stop to the colonies on its own after the bad Algerian experience, and simply asked for the inhabitants of those places what they wanted. Saying it's not part of France is insulting the words and decisions of the people of France... Technically Islands like Réunion or Guadeloupe are more French than Hawaii is American. It's a total legislative and administrative fusion. There's no discerning it from metropolitan France as a rule but as an exception. Laws making an exception must be formulated, in the absence of said laws, the normal code applies...and none of the territories have their own set of laws. All those territories are 100% part of Europe too, and a European citizen doesn't even need a passport to travel there - just an ID card or a driving licence will suffice.
I think it didn't start with Algeria but with the First Indochina War from 1945 to 1954 (Now Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam), and French India (Pondichéry, Karikal, Yanam and Mahé). The inability for France to keep control of Indochina fuelled Algeria's will for independence right after.
@@retropaganda8442 Algeria is literally what triggered the referendum which led to the end of the French colonial empire. What you mention is just one of the low point of the French empire. It's not even the first, before Indochine war (Vietnam), Haïti was the first to revolt successfully against France. And before Haiti, colonies passed from a country to another. There's dozens of low points for the colonial empire, but the one that broke the camel back was Algeria.
Fun fact : In France, elections take part on sunday. But the overseas territories (except Reunion and Mayotte) always vote one day before mainland France. Not only is the earth's spin faster at the equator, launching on the equator means you do not need to make the very expensive maneuver to adjust your orbit's plane to that of the equator (for geostationary orbits, typical low earth orbits, etc.)
Also with regards to the spaceport in Fr. G., because the Earth spins towards the East, you need to launch the rockets slightly towards East and having an ocean to the East of the launch site means the rockets are launched over an uninhabited area to avoid land casualties in case of failures
Yep, the maneuver thing is the main reason you want to launch near equator. Plus the fact that you can choose prety much any orbital plane for your satellite. The added spinning speed, adds up one or two hundred m/s, out of roughly 7000m/s you need. It doesn't make that big of a difference.

A few years ago, a question about the list of the countries that share a common border with France was on the citizenship test (a test for someone on a working visa for a long time wanting to acquire the citizenship). You had to say if such or such country had a common border with France. Well, Netherlands was on the list of countries. And the expected answer, was, of course, "not bordering France".
I would be pissed about that if I were French... if not for the fact that every citizenship test I have seen has had far, far worse questions. I have New Zealand citizenship, gained when I was born in New Zealand and so no questions were answered, and British citizenship, gained after living in Wales for 5 years at age 12, at which age you don't take any citizenship test. But I saw examples from the citizenship test from friends at university, and, well, we disagreed with almost every question we saw - though the intended answers were obvious. Basically, you say something roughly along the lines of "the UK is the bestest ever country ever with no flaws and is run so well and is a perfect utopia completely free from discrimination where everyone is treated equally by the government", and probably, though I don't remember if this was included, something about pledging allegiance to the British royal family and saying how good they are. I still can't believe that thinking it's disgusting to pledge allegiance to what I would describe as a bunch of rich entitled wankers is an unpopular opinion... though drilling American kids to pledge allegiance to the flag every day at school certainly seems worse to me than the much, much, much less common pledging allegiance to anything in the UK.
Even if you live in Africa away from French overseas territories, you're still pretty much guaranteed to hear a lot of people speaking French because they're former colonies and French is really the primary way people in the former colonies can communicate with each other

North african countries can speak arabic between one another. A big part of east Africa(though none are former french colonies unless you count eastern DRC) can use Swahili to communicate. In different african regions, by the borders, people speak the same language because often time colonial maps didn't take into account linguistic/tribal maps. Other than those cases, yes, French and English are the only options.
It's a pity that all the videos about the French overseas territories never mention the people (natives, French, immigrants from other continents etc.) who live there. For example, the case of Reunion Island is quite exceptional. An island where 3 religions cohabit a place with a wide range of ethnic groups (French, "Creole", Chinese, Indian...) or even Guiana. Indeed, there is an important economic aspect (not so much important since France doesn't really exploit its EEZ except for fishing), if France keeps these territories it is not really for an imperialist reason, it is just that they became a part of France as much from an economic point of view as a cultural one. There are many French people from overseas who come to metropolitan France or French people from the Hexagone who have family or friends in these territories

So there is one exception to what you said. New Caledonia has a large indigenous population that do not want to be part of France. They do not make up a majority but in is a large minority. On that topic the French possessions in the Pacific Ocean have more autonomy then any other part of France and even have there own currency, the CFP franc.
There is another factor to remember here. Different French overseas territories have different level of governing autonomy. French Polynesia and New Caledonia, for example, even have their own currency; the Pacifique Franc while Reunion is a fully fledged French Department and uses Euro. Reunion island is the most multi-ethnic island I've ever been too. It has every race of human from every continent living together in harmony. Racism is unthinkable there.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the Schengen agreement only applies to countries, not overseas territories or some European islands, like the ones in the Baltic sea, if i'm not mistaken. The agreement is full of exceptions like this one, for a few other European countries. You can travel to those locations for holidays, with only an ID, if you are a European citizen, but you'll need a work permit if you plan on staying.
@@Ysundeneth You obviously don't know what is Schengen... Schengen membership and European Union membership are 2 different things. Schengen is about control, which means there are no border control between member states... you can freely go from Spain to France to Germany to Poland without being checked at the border and if you are checked you don't need a visa or passport (as long as you are from a country member of Schengen). That's what Schengen is. And if you are for exemple an American tourist visiting Germany for exemple with a 3 months VISA, you can freely move to France or Italy or any other Schengen member state and stay there as long as your 3 months VISA allows it, you're not forced to stay in Germany. However you can't take a flight from Germany to French Guiana with a VISA for Germany, but you can freely take a train from Munich to Paris to visit France. Nothing to do with European citizenship which means you can freely live and stay and work in any other EU member state with just your ID. Ireland is part of the EU but not part of Schengen which means there are border controls even from other EU member states YET any European citizen can freely move to Ireland and live there. Switzerland is part of Schengen which means you can freely cross Switzerland if you want to go from France to Italy for exemple without VISA or Passport (as long as you are from a country member of Schengen), but it's not part of the EU which means a French or an Italian can freely cross Swtizerland but can't live and stay there with their European citizenship. People from French Caribbean islands are common, so much that we can tell their accent apart from say, people of same skin color and facial features but coming from African French speaking countries.
The French government makes it also possible for its civil servants to work in overseas territories, or the other way around. Teachers can start their carreer in Paris then go on in Tahiti or Réunion. It's also possible for non-government workers -but less common.

It seems like because France became a republic while colonialism was still happening, the territories they gained during that time are recognized as part of France itself rather than a monarch's possessions, which has unusual benefits for France and the EU. France actually seems pretty unique in that regard. Wonder how much territory the UK would still control if their overseas territories had seats in Parliament and felt represented?
The Portuguese overseas territories had parliamentary representation (Angola, Mozambique, the State of India, Macau) and those were still decolonised. The difference being perhaps that France had a permanent seat on the UN Security Council and Portugal and Spain did not. Regarding the UK, there are still many far-flung territories which are considered "part of the UK", just that they have generally tiny populations and thus self-government doesn't amount to much. I'm certain if the UK were as culturally imperialist as France is (ask the Bretons), it could have kept Canada and Australia by placing them in the same position as Scotland and Wales.
@@njdevilku1340 nah to large for that to work, French Guyana works because even though its large its population is so tiny even compared to the other Guyana its better off staying in France That and most of the Commonwealth was built mostly upon continent with other cultures prior to the empire (like Africa and Asia) Maybe New Zealand wouldve stayed though with a bunch of islands everywhere
@@tiagorodrigues3730 I think the Portuguese had to decolonise because of rebellions in these territories, due to the fact that segregation still happend (don't know how present it was though), and the territories in India where invaded by India, and the Portuguese had no way to get them back

I've only met a handful of Frenchmen in my travels, and none of them were from the mainland.
Independence from colonialism.

I was looking for this comment. I'm not disappointed.
It's also further away from the center of the earth and thus you need less speed.

Thanks for pointing out. I didn't know about this. Does this apply to all overseas territory?
fucking pirates
@@Ysundeneth
You obviously don't know what is Schengen...
French Guiana is fully part of France which means any European citizen (so any Dutch) can move and live there as if he was French, however it's not part of Schengen which means there are border controls.
@@gontrandjojo9747 Yes, you are right. I got mixed up and the overseas territory wrong too. I blame that lovely bottle of Ménétou Salon and some hereditary brain farting. It's actually French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and Wallis and Futuna, where you need a work permit, even if you are an EU national . So, @unknownmovement can have a great time in all the other overseas territories we have. Merry Christmas.
To give you an idea : during my life I had friends from Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guyana, Madagascar (I know, independent), New Caledonia, La Réunion, and probably more that I forget. Never seen anyone from or who has ever been to Saint Pierre & Miquelon though. But it is a known place, as it's the only French territory in North America. Also, I had friends moving to La Réunion, and many visiting those places for the holidays. So mainland France is not at all disconnected from those overseas territories, far from it.
Ma mère vient de Saint Pierre et j'y suis déjà allé, maintenant tu as "vu" quelqu'un :D

Don't worry, the sun never sets on the UK empire either; the map isn't _quite_ as ridiculous as for France, but it's close enough to qualify (...at least, as long as the British Indian Ocean Territory still counts as part of the UK empire, despite being entirely uninhabited aside from a US military base).

France also owns several properties inside the city of Jerusalam (mostly churches) which were given to France by the Ottoman Empire and still are officially property of France, I.e. Israeli police is not allowed to enter without passport.
They are like embassies though aren't they ?
Because before the crusades Jerusalem was under the rule of Baudouin IV King of Jérusalem (1174-1185) who was part french and part Armenian.
It's not exactly like that, the sovereignty of this compound is fully Israeli, Israelis don't need passports to enter any place in Jerusalem, and the Israeli police doesn't enter these religious sites out of respect and official policy, not because they can't. If a suspect of a crime enters the church, the Israeli police will ask the Patriarch to take care of it. There won't be a Julian Assange situation there.
Actually they were given to France because French built them (Crusaders were French)
Israeli police can enter, it is Israel's territory. As it is mostly churches and except if there is a real danger they just ask israeli police to leave weapons outside. That's why they do not go inside 😅.

Are we counting Commonwealth countries?
