Asparagus is also illegally grown by farmers on both sides. So when you see asparagus in your supermarket labeled Greece or Turkey, chances are it's from the Cypriot buffer zone. Smuggling is also a rampant problem, with human traffickers active in the buffer zone. Some Turkish soldiers I met were of English origin, and one lad was a Londoner. One could argue Turkey's claim that 'only continental landmasses can have EEZs' is hypocritical. The islands of Greece are in fact a part of a continental landmass, the continental tectonic plate of Eurasia for which Greece controls a part of. I could be interpretting it wrong, but in my opinion just for Turkey to say those exact words specifically turns their argument into a broad one that could also fall apart with relative ease.
It's much more technical than that Greece claims the EEZ borders of an Island country while it isn't even one. An Island countrys largest landmass needs to constitute less than 50% of its total territory (for ex. Indonesia) so their claims are farfetched and not on legal terms
Greece has always been an island country, with maritime tradition. The Aegean island are actually inhabited and always, since antiquity, have been inhabited only by greek populatios, even during the ottoman empire @@nenenindonu
@@af2539 But by @nenenindonu 's argument, Greece would have to give up significant portions of its continental territory in order to fall into the legal category of "Island Nation". No one is disputing Greece's right to claim the later.
So you didnt talk about the Armenain and Azerbajiani despute and the dot that you placed on the map between Kazakhstan and Russia. Why did you put those on the map if you werent going to explain them.
Your forgetting the border dispute between my country (Estonia) and russia. In 1920 we signed the Tartu treaty with russia which made us an international recognized state and defined our eastern borders. Then in ww2 the soviets illegally annexed our eastern districts (include much of Narva and nearly the whole homeland of the Seto subculture). Since restoration time to time there are negotiations but nothing is approved because russia fundamental does not recognize the Tartu Treaty (which is so important it’s in our Constitution), and other terrible precedences legitimatising the illegal transfer would set. This year the issue was highlighted again when russia stole our bouys demarking the inner-estonian border (as I like to call it). This resulted in a rise of violations at the line, and russia refusing to return the bouys unless we delegitimize the Tartu Treaty.
You think Estonia (and to an extent Finland with areas it lost to the USSR) will try negotiate these lands back if Russia loses the current war with Ukraine?
@@mr.gamewatch6165 Don't know about Estonia but Finland won't. 35:00, should have highlighted how even though Turkey's 1st intervention was legal and right to a certain extent, their second invasion was entirely illegal. That, along with the continued occupation to this day, the settlers from Turkey, and their refusal to recognize their crimes as well as their refusal to talk about proper unification is what keeps Cyprus divided. And mind you, Turkey did all that under democratically elected governments, while Greece's mistake in 1974 was an action by the unelected dictatorship, that fell subsequently after exactly because of the Cyprus issue. 42: Estonia and Russia dispute of Treaty of Tartu borders. Primarily the city of Narva. Currently both countries recognize the border as defined by Russia, however Estonia continues to state that the land was taken by Russia (Soviet union) against the terms of the treaty. The situation has also escalated in recent months following Russia removing border markers along the Narva river and lake peipsi causing fears in Estonia that Russia was trying to make the border ambiguous in the effort to change it again. 43: Estonia and Latvia dispute over Ruhnu island. There's no real territorial dispute between Greece and Turkey, the Treaty of Lausanne (1923) clearly designates the border. The only real problem is the Turkish occupation of Northern Cyprus. All Turkish claims appear after 2000 for the first time and are not recognized by any state or international organization in the world, with Greece retaining normal sovereignty over all the islands of the Aegean further than 3NM from the Anatolian Coast except for Imbros and Tenedos
Yeah well you missed the fact that Turkish minority on the island were constantly harassed and attacked with hundreds of dead right before the invasion. Turkey's proposal to set up a mutual government with the co-presidentship was rejected by Enosis government. Then the invasion happened. I was there so if you are going to dispute any of these, make sure you know what you're talking about ;)
@@cemdursun My friend, it might be hard for you to realize this, but this is all textbook Turkish propaganda. The Turks in Cyprus were respected by the Republic of Cyprus and would have also been respected even if Cyprus joined Greece, exactly like the Turks of Western Thrace. Only in areas with Greek populations that Turkey controls do we see the native Greeks suddenly disappear. For example in Istanbul in 1955 and then 1964 the Greeks were kicked out. Later in 1974 tens of thousands of Greeks were murdered and hundreds of thousands kicked out. Northern Cyprus was 90% Greek, now there aren't any Greeks left... Everything else is just pretext used by Turkey to invade. I hope you see this in good faith. I understand and realize that many Turks on the island didn't feel well because they lived in a majority Greek area, but Cyprus is Greek in culture and history, it has always been a normal region of Greece. You're saying that because some idiot terrorists killed ten or twenty Turks (and then the Greek terrorists were imprisoned), this suddenly justifies an invasion and genocide? If so, then what should Greece have done in 1927, 1955, 1964 or 1974? When the Greeks of Turkey were being killed or had their properties seized? You think that Greece is being racist towards Turks, the reality is the exact opposite though. In Thrace there are more Turks now than there were in 1923 and they even have a political party. In Turkey the Greeks have been driven to extinction even after 1923, on several occasions. The problem is that Greece normally should have declared war and protected Cyprus in 1974, attacking Turkey itself with all its forces. But, at the time, we were having a regime change and didn't have the stability needed to wage war. I wish that in the future our country doesn't show a cowardly stance and protects its people. Because obviously you see no justice from a conqueror...

Really disappointed that you included the name dispute betwee North Macedonia and Greece, but failed to mention the ongoin dispute between North Macedonia and Bulgaria about the formation of its ethnic identity. This also led to Bulgaria vetoing North Macedonia's negotiations for EU accession.
Get your facts straight: FYROM changed their name to "North Macedonia". Their official name was Former Yugoslavic Republic of Macedonia. They are slavs and albanians who stole the name Macedonia from the greeks, because they wanted a "national" narrative. Yes, the word they used as their endonym does not exist in their language.
We didn't steal anything. The name was used here for over 100 years as a national identity due to many historical factors that got us separate from Bulgaria, and have developed first a strong regional identity that evolved into a national identity. Of course later in Yugoslavia is where the modern take came from (to some extent, there were others in the past before Yugoslavia that claimed we were descendants of Ancient Macedonia). Plus don't forget that Greece didn't use the name "Macedonia" of the northern province until the 80s.
There is another one. Poland illegally annexed parts of germany after agreeing to the Potsdam Treaty and the Oder-Neiße-Borderline. Namely the major town of Stettin and the small vilage of Swinemünde. This was in violation of both the treaty and international law, simply because germany was beaten and couldn't resist any invasions. Nor did the soviets particularly care about the GDR.
I always wondered why the Protestants and Catholics could not come to an agreement to ensure the safety of Protestants in an Irish country. I have to believe that Northern Ireland is Occupied Territory, and it belongs to Ireland, not the United Kingdom.

The Aegean island are actually inhabited and always, since antiquity, have been inhabited only by greek populatios, even during the ottoman empire
@@nenenindonu
@@af2539 But by @nenenindonu 's argument, Greece would have to give up significant portions of its continental territory in order to fall into the legal category of "Island Nation". I don't think it wants to do that.
But on the other hand, there is a big difference between a "legal" Island Nation category and a "social" or "cultural" classification. No one is disputing Greece's right to claim the later.
@@nenenindonu The turkish claim is literal bonkers regardless. Covering a significant part of Greece population under their EEZ.

Can't kick them out as it's against international law and taking them in would mean creating 10% minority that needs EU-standard housing, infra, schooling, social benefits...
Before the Enosis movement, Turkish and Greek Cypriots lived peacefully with many speaking both languages.
